Found this sub while looking for a new laptop to replace my surface pro 3. I'm a Psychiatry Fellow and spend most of my day typing notes while people speak, so a T series keyboard sounded like a good priority. I also do photography and graphic design on the side, utilizing several Adobe CC products, so 8th Gen processor, upgradeable drive/ram, and color accurate screen were essential. Almost went with X1C6, but ultimately, longevity and value (still just a fellow) were more important than portability and brightness. So in the end, the T480 seemed like the best fit (though I really miss having a touch screen).

  The screen is beautiful, and I'm digging the anti-glare matte, though my SP3 glossy screen made colors pop more. I installed the calibrated color profile from the notebookcheck.com review of the T480s with what I assume was the same WQHD screen. Here are the instructions I used from notebookcheck.
  
  Replacing the internal components was a breeze, though unfortunately, I watched the Lenovo disassembly video that showed front clips being disengaged with spudger, so now I have a front gap. Also broke a battery compartment clip but whatever.
  
  I installed windows fresh using a recovery flash drive made before swapping in the NVMe drive. I'm fully updated through both vantage and windows update, which took a few hours.
  
  Ultimately, I'm ridiculously happy with this build. The keyboard is a DREAM except for the annoying fn button placement (who thought this was a good idea?). I threw in a Logitech MX Master 2S for desk work, but honestly, this trackpoint is a game changer when I'm working on my lap.

What you’ll need to do is pick out your new battery, ssd, and ram modules.

On to the fun stuff!

So shut down your max and let it cool down for five minutes. Use this time to reflect on whether or not your backups are actually sufficient in case you ruin the computer (very low risk, but possible anytime you have the case open.)

There are ten screws on the bottom case, on my MacBook they are Phillips but on newer Macs they are security screws.

Remove all the screws and set them aside somewhere safe.

Remove the theee screws (these are torx I think) holding the battery down and carefully disconnect it from its connector.

With the battery out, we can really safely upgrade the Ram and SSD.

The Ram is held in by these weird spring clips. Carefully push the tabs outward and the top module will pop up, remove it. Rinse and repeat for the bottom module. Now that the slots are empty, pop the new RAM modules in. Seating them correctly is the number one issue you’ll run into. Push firmly until they are really in there. A good tip is to note how the original ones were seated and mimic that.

I haven’t done this bit yet but The hard drive will come out after you remove the corner screws and disconnect it from its connector. Replace it will the new 2.5” SSD and out the screws back it.

The last thing to do is to put the new battery in, replace all the screws, put he back cover back on, replace all the screws, and boot that mofo up!

If it won’t boot on battery that’s the issue, check to see if you can boot on the power adapter.

If the Mac fails to boot and beeps really aggressively at you, the Ram is having an issue.

You’ll also need to load a fresh copy of the operating system onto the the new SSD and ensure that whole process goes smoothly.

Well, first off: OS X 10.11 El Capitan isn't the newest macOS version for your MacBook Pro. Your MacBook pro actually supports macOS 10.13 High Sierra.   OS X El Capitan went out of support in the fall of 2018, so it has been missing out on security for quite some time. Every major macOS version has 1 year of mainstream support (the time frame between its own initial release and the initial release of its successor one year later) and two years of security support immediately after that. Security support includes Safari updates.
  
  Mainstream support for High Sierra has already ended, but its security support only ends in the fall of 2020. So if you update your MacBook Pro to High Sierra, it is still safe to use.

Maybe consider a Thinkpad. The T and L series are mil-spec tested so they should handle dust pretty well. They also have external batteries so you can bring a few extras to extend run time. Some models can also be configured with LTE if you need internet access in areas without wifi.

I'd recommend the L470 configured with the extended 72Wh battery, then spending the remainder of your budget on extra batteries.

This is a common issue with this model. Look at the amazon reviews. I had the exact same thing happen a few months ago. I ended up getting a replacement battery from the Bay of Eees and swapping it out. That fixed the problem for now, we'll see how long this battery lasts. If you do this, make sure you get a brand new battery and not one reclaimed from someone's dead laptop.

A good solution is to recreate THIS . It doesn't charge the battery, but it gives you a lot more battery when your regular ones are done.

I have similar battery life these days. My battery is only charging to 29.9 Wh. Our machines are nearly identical minus the nvidia gpu. I was thinking about grabbing this battery on amazon with a design capacity of 94.4 Wh.

On the machine you should try to run the brightness as low as you can stand, double check that the cpu is idling at the lowest frequency, and disable anything you don't use (bluetooth, etc).

I would probably take a chance on this $69 Amazon 9 cell.

Mine had the same issue: trackpad became increasingly hard to depress in the front corners as mouse buttons -- and then started to lift up -- first visible issue. I searched online and found threads like this. Opened the case and saw the swollen battery.

I searched re: batteries, and no WAY would get a "refurbished" OEM battery from Dell. I wanted something new, with new LiIon cells, etc. In the end, I purchased one on Amazon. It has mixed reviews, but it seems that some of the negatives were from totally clueless customers. The people who sounded credible gave it good reviews -- and I had to option to return it if there were problems, so I went ahead with the order. Overall -- a very positive experience. I also posted a review of the one I bought on Amazon. Product arrived in 2 days as promised. Very nicely packaged. The box was clean and the battery was inside an anti-static enveloped sandwiched between 2 layers of spongy foam. There was also a separate zip lock bag enclosed with the torx and phillips drivers needed to remove the laptop cover and battery. The whole replacement took just a few minutes.

The only concern I have is that the original battery was spec'd at 97 wHr, and when I general a battery report in Windows 10 using the command powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:\battery_report.html" to place the report at the root of my C: drive, it looks like the max capacity of this battery reads as 91.2 Wh (91,200 mWh).

Anyway - the laptop booted up perfectly after the replacement -- no BIOS issues or any other problems. The battery arrived 60% charged, and in less than 2 hours with the laptop connected via USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 cable to my Dell Thunderbolt 3 dock, the battery is already at 90%.

I also checked, and it appears that this replacement battery is made by LGC (LG Chem). They're the successor company to Lucky / Goldstar, a $20+ billion conglomerate based in South Korea. LGC is also one of the primary battery suppliers to Lenovo for their laptops. The original battery that came with my Dell XPS 15 9560 was made by Simplo -- a Taiwanese company (I can see that on the printed section of the old battery). Simplo is known for providing batteries for Macbook's. I have no concerns about batteries from either company. I'd just like an explanation regarding my new battery showing up as having only a 91,200 mWh capacity, when the original was spec'd at 97 Wh, and this new one is listed here at 97 wHr.

Unfortunately, it seems these batteries are out of stock. I'm not sure where to get a working 72Wh battery.

The working battery that I have is a 61++ made by LG Chem from Lenovo's replacement parts site. The non-working battery is a 61++ made by Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. from Amazon (link). Both are real, genuine Lenovo batteries. They use a few different companies for batteries. I haven't been able to find out why the second battery won't work. It's detected as a battery in Windows and Linux, but all values (capacity, charge state, etc.) are unable to be read and the battery won't do anything. I've tried to find out how to debug ACPI, but I haven't found much.

I even got a replacement for the non-working battery, but it was the same manufacturer and still didn't work. I took apart the first one and all the cells were good, all the circuitry looked good as well.

I'm looking for a replacement battery for my X200 as well. Generally, some common problems faced with 3rd party batteries are:

• Not recognised by Thinkpad software, leading to occasional messages saying that battery is not supported. More of a nuisance actually since it doesn't limit the usage of the Thinkpad.
  
• Incompatibility with Ultrabase due to different shape/size from the original battery. However, there are some that appear to be compatible and allows the Thinkpad to fit in the Ultrabase.
  
• Typically poorer battery life compared to the original.
  
  This seems to be one of the options with generally positive reviews on Amazon, doesn't cause warning messages to appear and supposedly works with the Ultrabase.

I would echo luc1zh on this one. 66% isn't a bad capacity at this point - it would put you in the region of a brand new 6-cell. While you could buy a new 9-cell, that's going to be quite expensive and they seem to be quite rare.

Having been looking for a new 9-cell for my X220 since basically the day I got it 2 years ago, personally I believe it's too expensive to bother with. Tends to be £80 plus on eBay, and the official Lenovo is £69 on Amazon.

However, that's for official Lenovo batteries. The general wisdom is to go with the official batteries, but there are plenty of aftermarket batteries available. It's a bit of crapshoot; there's a huge price differential (I've just bought an aftermarket 9-cell for ~£15, for example) and you have to ask yourself - why is that the case? Is it because they're cutting corners on quality? The answer to that is likely, yes, they are - which could mean anything from: battery doesn't have the stated capacity, the capacity declines very quickly or even they've compromised on safety and the battery will blow up in your face - literally.

I guess what I'm saying is, you've got 3 options:

1. Do nothing, keep that battery, save money

I'd searched a couple of days ago, but this has a year of warranty left. On this machine, you could install an FHD screen, throw in a decent SSD, add a new 9-cell battery, and still have a bit of money left :)

You could also add in a quad core i7 somewhere down the line if needed. the CPU can be swapped. I'm a bit busy right now, but, I'll come back with more options later in the day.

I was looking for something similar, and went for a Lenovo Thinkpad X230 with a 9-cell battery.

It may be a little big for your liking, especially with the battery jutting out, but it's worth considering.

With the 9-cell battery, and powertop, it can easily last 6-9 hours, depending on what you're doing.
Idling, it can last well over 14 hours.

The X230 is tricky; it's the first ThinkPad in the series to use digital battery authentication. That means, while a X220 battery fits hardware-wise, the software is incompatible and when you install a X220 battery Windows reports it as "not charging", thus, all X220 4-cells are incompatible.

The correct 4-cell battery for the X230 is Lenovo FRU 45N1019, and it indeed is $130 on Amazon.

But, there is a good reason why it's expensive. The battery must be made with a custom lithium-ion cell shape because of the limited battery thickness; standard 18650 cells are too big for the package.

If you get the more popular 44+ 6-cell LG Chem battery that has 18650 cells, Lenovo FRU 45N1025, its around $48 on Amazon.

It's not much bigger than the 4-cell physically. Here is a picture of the 6-cell.

My Chromebook 2 stopped working recently unless it was plugged in. I thought I'd have to buy a new Chromebook to replace it, but after looking online I decided to try a new battery instead. I replaced it with this one, and that fixed the problem. My $300 problem ended up being just a $30 problem. Also, I love the Chromebook 2!

The specific battery I bought doesn't fit your model, but fwiw, I bought this battery from Amazon a month ago which was much cheaper than directly from Lenovo and I have had zero issues with it. Based on all the packaging and the internal battery stats, it appears to be legit. I've been using it for at least a few hours on battery every day and the capacity is currently at 99.9038% which seems reasonable to me for one month's use.

This is a legit lenovo battery, I have been using it for months with no issue.

I also don't think this laptop can really be called an ultra book at all. It's huge, it's heavy, it's thick. It's a great laptop but it certainly doesn't belong in the same category as the macbook air or dell xps 13.

Once you get your battery, go through the Power Manager settings as well - you can tweak your battery settings quite extensively.

The touch pad isn't really all that bad, especially if you use the touch functions.

New batteries would give you 12v, which might drop as low as 9.6v during discharge... the lighthouses might be more voltage sensitive than that.

If you're not going to be gaming on it then any 2x4gb or 2x8gb potato sticks should work. If you need iGPU performance then you'll want 2133MHz potato sticks.

In terms of battery I'd only buy direct from Lenovo or from their Amazon page (link to 9 cell). Amazon link for 6 cell battery here. Buying direct from Lenovo ensures you get a genuine battery. You're welcome to buy cheaper batteries from Ebay or other sellers but they likely won't last as long as genuine Lenovo batteries.

I have the 2017 Razer Blade 14 with the GTX 1060 and the i7-7700HQ. My battery is swollen. I have removed it. I am looking for a replacement. If that's the only advantage of the 470 I certainly don't care much for it, since the laptop obviously doesn't come with a 4K screen and I won't be plugging it to a 4K TV anytime soon.

Someone also told me that the T470 comes with a USB-C port. Which could be nice to have, but... even if smartphones use the C port now, I honestly don't see much use for it. Most chargers still come with a USB-A to C cable anyway, and other than that, I'd rather have more USB-A ports so I can plugin my work peripherals (webcam, headset, etc.) than have one less A port in favor of a C port.

Also, thanks for highlighting the differences between the T and the L model... it seems I underestimated them. Unfortunately I probably won't have much say on it, but at least I can try asking for a T460 if they're available.

Now that you mention it, I think people who receive an L460 are getting it with a weird "hump" below it that servers as battery extension. Probably this one.

It's damn ugly but I'm wondering if you would get better battery life with a "humped" L460 than a naked T460?

As others have said, up the ram to 8-16 gb. Another thing I would think about doing is replace the battery. Often times refurbed batteries are terrible. I wouldn't reccomend third party batteries, as I have found the cells inside them are bad. I also added a bay battery from ebay, but that's just personal preference.

In linux, install tlp, thinkfan, and the install the thinkpad kernel module. That software basically optimizes linux for the thinkpad. You will get much better battery life with all of that. Also, thinkfan will let you set the fan curve, and provides a better option for fan control on thinkpads compared to what is in linux out of the box.

Everything else should work just fine in Linux. Please note that 160 gb might not be big enough for both linux and windows. Linux will be fine with low storage, but windows is 20 gbs by itself. In addition, adobe CC is probably another 10 gb or so. Keep that in mind.

Okay, I need to rave about my new laptop.

Here's what makes this such a great laptop for AP -- it has two batteries. One of the batteries is removable while the laptop is running (hot swappable), and the laptop will drain that battery before the other battery.

So basically, you can buy these 6 cell replaceable batteries for about $50-70 depending on the day, and those each will get you about 4-6 hours of imaging time depending on what you're doing. When you buy the laptop, it comes with the internal 3 cell battery, and a replaceable 3 cell battery (at least if you get it via the link). So that already gets you about 4 hours of imaging in itself. So combined, you get a solid 8 hours of imaging without even needing to charge your laptop.

I really like it because I can just buy like 4 of the 6 cell batteries, and basically be gone for the whole weekend and not think about needing power for my laptop.

I'm running the SkyX Pro and TeamViewer w/ Wifi on for remote accessing, and those are about the battery life times I get. I also do my processing with Pix Insight on my laptop for the most part, and it runs fine.

My Plasma battery monitor usually says I'll get about ~3.5 hrs out of it when I turn brightness down which I think sounds way too short. My original battery was manufactured in 2012 with an 83% capacity but the battery monitor read the same thing.

After looking into it a bit it looks like a standard AA battery is around 2000-3000mah (every brand and type will differ) so say you have 8 AA batteries hooked in parallel you would have something close to 20,000mah of power at ~1.5V.
