Hands down, get him a monitor arm. I just got a deal on this one and I like it so far

And here are some similar deals

If he just uses a laptop without a separate monitor there's this sort of thing

Consider a standing desk but only in addition to the above. Seeing someone standing but scrunched down on a laptop drives me crazy.

u/SurfaceDockGuy · 3 pointsr/Surface

Hi,

If you don't want to go with a drop-in-docking solution for quick docking/un-docking, you can mate a budget VESA arm (Monoprice or Fleximounts) with a generic tablet/laptop holder. We have a stack of these in the lab and they are pretty solid.

Are you also looking for electronics to connect your monitor? A simple "active" miniDP->HDMI cable will work with most monitors.

Cheers,

Dan

Thanks! This is the laptop mount I ended up getting.

Laptop stand is from Amazon (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00CM9NG1W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

It's an arm that attaches to the side of my table, like my monitor :)

u/WheatGerm42 · 3 pointsr/eGPU

This one! Except I got it on eBay, refurbished, for a little cheaper. Figured that it's a hunk of metal, so I don't need it brand new.

Pretty good quality, bought it two years ago

u/6745408 · 2 pointsr/ikeahacks

The one I have is the laptop one -- but they also have ones with a secondary monitor arm.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CM9NG1W

It works really well.

u/Ovidhalia · 2 pointsr/macsetups

If you want to keep your desk space then you could buy a laptop monitor arm instead of a stand. That would allow you to mount it to the desk just like a normal monitor arm and it would actually take up less space on the desk than the Arc stand you have now.

Something like this or this, or you could even go with a dual mount and mount both your monitor and your MacBook on one arm.

u/sovereign007 · 2 pointsr/eGPU

I use this thing. This is what it looks like in action (laptop is old, nowdays there's a x360 in it, but you get the idea). This set doesn't seem to be sold anymore, but there are similar ones.

u/Flipsyde127 · 2 pointsr/battlestations

If the laptop is necessary and you don't have a desktop, you should look into a dual monitor stand with a laptop attachment. Do a simple Amazon search. It will bring everything off the desk for more space and a clean look, and will help position the laptop in a more suitable fashion. Check out this stand here just for a quick idea.

u/cosmic_cow_ck · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I have it on a stand sort of like this so it should be getting plenty of airflow.

u/HoneySavage · 2 pointsr/homegrowntits

I see you have your priorities straight 😛

It's from amazon! I adore it!

I was planning a different set up that is why I got a tall one but I could do a short one too. Ended up mounting at the cable hole on the desk.

u/sonsofaureus · 1 pointr/AskBattlestations

A laptop pole mount might be pretty good. 15.6 is small compared to the 24, so I would suggest setting that off to the side for non-essential display, like messenger apps, voicemeeter, etc.

u/geo_tracker · 1 pointr/Battletops

I'm using this stand for the laptop/middle monitor. It's help up decently, although it isn't super sturdy. Works okay for my purposes.

As for the laptop, I haven't had any problems related to heat although I admittedly don't pay super close attention to the temps.

anytime! yeah, i really wanted those ekby tore's too :( but i might get this and use the top platform as a shelf so to speak, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CM9NG1W/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3W3STWCK1O3NR

Also works for a smallish monitor since it has a vesa mount.

u/MrPap · 1 pointr/StandingDesk

using this https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FOTABWY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have the pole to the right near where one of the under desk frame pieces makes a T.

I then switched the monitor and laptop arms, so the monitor is in the center of the desk with the long arm.

u/keirmeister · 1 pointr/battlestations

It's this, but with the laptop stand attached to the leg of the desk instead:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FOTABWY

u/rolandkeytar · 1 pointr/piano

Try something like this. You could either hook it to one of the stand braces or to your 88 key. If you go for the second option, make sure it's balanced and put some foam around the clamp so you don't damage your board.

Bought for a project almost a year ago exactly and no longer need, laptop has a small scuff on the right side from the stand otherwise looks new. Firm on price and not looking to trade, any swap will take place around Matthews / Mint Hill.

u/ChaoticRoon · 1 pointr/Surface

I've thought about combining a gas spring monitor arm with a laptop vesa tray. It would certainly be awesome when using it docked as a desktop (with an second monitor and keyboard/mouse) but I don't think it will be stable enough to draw on.

VIVO Fully Adjustable Single... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00FOTABWY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It's excellent! I printed out a VESA mount for my tablet to attach to the second arm on the stand. I use it as my TouchUI device for OctoPrint, rather than the tiny 3.5" LCD I was using on my Pi.

u/ItWorkedLastTime · 1 pointr/battlestations

Super clean setup.

Have you considered getting a monitor mount? Something like this monitor laptop mount would free up quite a lot of desk space.

u/chuckfr · 1 pointr/StandingDesk

I think if you get a higher desk you'll find you still lean in on the laptop monitor. I don't like the desktop converters that you link to personally. I always find them awkward to use regularly. I have clients with them and avoid those cubes when possible.

Like others have suggested, get an external keyboard and mouse. Then get yourself either a laptop stand that will bring the screen up to a better height for you, an external monitor that will give you a bigger screen/better height, or a stand that will hold your laptop and an external monitor giving you two functional screens.

I have this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DA4HUTQ/, love it so far.

u/IvGranite · 1 pointr/macsetups

Whoops, sorry! Here it is

u/littleSparrow31 · 1 pointr/macsetups

Thank you very much!

The stand is the SAMDI Wooden Laptop Stand from Amazon.

u/grodhisatva · 1 pointr/mediacomposing

yeah i didn't even put the arms on my chair because i often have to track guitar and bass, i much prefer not having them

personally I think the surface area on the Output desk looks great! but if you have lots of controllers and stuff it's annoying to reach over. I personally would recommend one of these (not this brand, I got this brand and there is an issue with the platter/surface itself not staying locked vertically) https://www.amazon.com/VIVO-Notebook-Adjustable-Extension-STAND-V001L/dp/B00CM9NG1W

then you can bring stuff forward or push it away as you need it. if you end up with some touch controls like a raven this will be super helpful

u/m1g1d · 1 pointr/woodworking

You should look into getting some kind of laptop holder that mounts to the wall, and use a separate keyboard/mouse (wireless preferably). I was thinking along the lines of this, but, ya know with just the bottom part...

Edited wrong link, but another idea: here

u/masonjam · 1 pointr/buildapc

Maybe this one or the standing version, and then add another monitor arm: http://www.amazon.com/VIVO-Notebook-Monitor-Adjustable-STAND-V002C/dp/B00FOTABWY

I use this monitor stand

Buy several of These and mount them all on a piece of pipe?

Or maybe install three rows of wall shelving.
