I’ve never sewed with leather before. Did it by hand and ended up having to use pliers to get the needle through each stitch.

I got the leather and thread from Amazon. Expect to break a few needles.

The added thickness also solves the issue of the clips sliding up after sitting and moving around.

Okay. Now I'm genuinely interested in your success. I've found you a how-to, which is basically 'boil the hide', but still worth the read:

http://www.practicalprimitive.com/skillofthemonth/hideglue.html

The hide, which you'll need very little of, can be found here:

You're all in at $35-ish, assuming you have a working cooking pot, a strainer, and access to a stove.

I want pics when you're done. In return, you get a fatherly 'I'm proud of you'.

You want to use vegetable tanned leather (like in the second link) but the stuff you got was super thick. You probably want something in the 5-7 oz thickness range (approx 2 mm) such as this. I don't know if it will help, but in terms of malleability, you can "case" the leather by getting it wet and letting it sit in a plastic bag for a day, and then shape it quite easily.

To attach it, you want to use Shoe Goo and follow the directions carefully. You can get it at Walgreens/Walmart/etc for a few bucks.

Next time you strap on those dancin' shoes you should kick it to this awesome song. Good luck!

Here’s an affordable hide. The gators can be had for cheaper sometimes, I got one for $200 once. My Tandy keeps the stingrays with the gators, maybe yours keeps them elsewhere or is always out. Anyway the above hide at Tandy would probably be like $50+. I’ve seen some Pelgio hides for as low as $18 but they’re about 7” long.

It depends on the size of the tear. They make leather patch kits like this one. I've used a kit similar to the one linked to repair a tear on a car seat.

Thanks. Actually, I made my own custom DM screen a while back:
https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/53kyim/finished_my_custom_dm_screen_is_now_complete/

And now I'm thinking about making a case for mine as well.

A quick search: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PUQMO7G/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2XCH7FHKEZB30&coliid=ISFIEC9B9GINM&psc=1

Looks like we could make our own leather case for about $20-$40.

I think it's this one through Amazon: Leather Side Piece Veg Tan Split Medium Weight

So based on aColorfulWorld comment, looks like I got exactly what I asked for, just didn't know what to ask. Well, learned my lesson this time around.

Thanks!

u/Mrwhitepantz · 2 pointsr/DnD

This is some pretty decent quality leather, thin enough to do binding like that and it's pretty cheap. Definitely enough there to do a few spellbooks, and not faux leather, which makes it better imo.

Oh I'm way in already! :))

It was a person who was cleaning the house and just happened to have scraps, it wasn't a shop. He had 2 pieces left but now the link isn't working so I assume he sold them both? However I don't think I'd do it again, I paid quite a lot in the end (around £7) and the piece I got was just enough for the cover, just had to cut it straight. I think in shops you can get a lot more than that for the price!

However there's things like this if you're interested :)

Thanks! Glad you liked it.

As far as leather, this one I got from Amazon that worked out ok:

Here's a similar one:

This is a notebook made with the leather I got from Amazon: http://imgur.com/a/3ti5u

Honestly, if you're in the States, I'd recommend checking if there is a Tandy Leather or Hobby Lobby nearby. Tandy will have a much broader, more cost effective selection. Hobby Lobby will have similar pieces to what's linked to Amazon, but at least you'll be able to see it.

u/joelav · 2 pointsr/woodworking

I bought this. I'm only doing the part between the screws. I don't see the value in doing the whole face.

Also I've got some strop material

u/HedgehogKnits · 1 pointr/bulletjournal

Actually it depends. There are tooling leather sheets available; like this or this which are already almost the perfect size and meant to take dye.

u/ltstranger · 1 pointr/Leathercraft

I dont have a picture right now, but this link is pretty much What like what I used. https://www.amazon.com/Leather-Medium-Weight-Inches-Square/dp/B003X3VZA0/

If you look at the picture of the end of the roll you can see the sides better. It is kinda like what you are saying. It is fleshy and softer on one side, but a little slicker and like sandpaper on the other.

Ive got some left over leather so ill do some experimenting with it.

Not to endorse a specific vendor, but I just ordered this:
http://www.amazon.com/Scrap-Leather-Medium-Brown-Cowhide/dp/B006UUHUDO?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
and made a sheath from it today.

Having done this a few times, my best recommendation to you is to get 6-7 oz leather of whatever color floats your boat.

What kind of stitching do you do? I use an awl with two needles, per the instructions in this book: http://www.amazon.com/Art-Hand-Sewing-Leather/dp/1892214911/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1464597294&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=hand+stiching+leather

Got an Amazon gift card and bought this:

https://www.amazon.com/Tooling-Leather-Natural-Topgrain-Weight/dp/B01EKV7JQC/ref=sr_1_7?srs=2588078011&ie=UTF8&qid=1483644663&sr=8-7&keywords=tooling+leather

Same company, but this is tooling leather with a smooth side rather than the split. The piece I received had a fairly large scratch/blemish. Sent pics and my receipt to Dangerous Threads, and they're sending me a new piece. Good customer service--hopefully the new piece isn't damaged, too.

u/treedle · 1 pointr/Cordwaining

Sorry for the lateness in replying. That sole leather is much thicker than what I had in mind. And the suede wont have the same feel as a traditional leather sole.

This is more what I had in mind. It will only be about half the thickness of that sole leather. But will have the same feel and hardness.

Just got it off Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01365YP0Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is enough to make 2, although there are probably much cheaper ways to get leather.

u/argentum42 · 1 pointr/notebooks

I picked up a piece of scrap leather off of Amazon. The description stated it was about 1/8 in. thick, so a little over 3 mm. I had to stick it under some heavy boxes for a few days to have it stay closed without the band around it.

It's stiff, but not terribly so. Definitely still relatively pliable. I wouldn't consider getting leather any thicker-- 3 mm was already a pain to cut (though I'm very inexperienced with leatherworking) and I suspect beyond that it would be much less pliable.

Perhaps wrong is the wrong thing to say. I got this off Amazon. It's pretty nice stuff it's just a lot softer than I was expecting so wallet turned out a bit floppy. It looks pretty nice but I think if I made another wallet out of the same stuff it would benefit from some kind of closure to keep it together
