Before I go into the products, the best purchase I've made years ago was purchasing the Amazon Prime yearly membership. Free two day shipping, Amazon Prime Video, Music, etc...
Anyways, I love this simple wolf necklace, amazing laptop case, Batman protein shake bottle, Legal writing pads, and my Harry Potter scarf.
I found some raised line paper and also a small plastic lettering template similar to the cardboard idea.
Here are two options on amazon: Lined paper or legal pads in different colors.
Rhodia makes a legal pad with yellow paper, but at $11/pad it's a lot pricier than the typical $2 legal pad that you find at Walmart or Target. You might have better luck with Staples' eco friendly sugarcane paper, which comes in legal pads as well as wirebound notebooks. They're like $5/pad and pretty fountain pen friendly, though I've found that Diamine and Noodler's inks tend to feather and bleed a bit. I've also heard good things about Ampad Gold Fibre pads.

Back in the day we made our own quest journals. I remember when I first started playing MUDs and zork style games I used to map everything on graph paper.
That paper is going to be really heavy, more like cardstock. A 24-32lb copy paper might be more appropriate for day to day.
As for notebooks, take a look at the hardcover Black n' Red books or maybe something top wirebound? Until recently, I hadn't found a legal pad that worked well (then I found these) so I used Rhodia pads with the spiral on top, like so. Definitely lets you hold up with one hand and write with the other.

The folding mechanism is not bad (However, it is pretty necessary to rip the pages out after you use them in order to write on the back.)

my personal favorite is the Ampad Gold Fibre Retro writing pad. 5"X8" Medium rule. It's just what I need for portability, "speed of draw", and ruggedness, but scaled for quick personal notes rather than scientific documentation. I've become quite fond of the short-edge wire bound style, which is very compatible my general use of one side of each sheet. Paired with the classic Pentel QE517 Japan 6A Twist-Erase 0.7mm mechanical pencil. Such a great pencil design!

I agree with /u/flwas - the brand of Nano should be built on the simplicity of the architecture and use. Branding should be comparable to Bic Mechanical Pencils, or Ampad Notepads. I buy both of those items in bulk, because they're very high quality, and very disposable. I've recorded genius (and idiot) ideas on them, used them to track scores for impromptu games at a bar, and left deep philosophical notes for myself with them. They are ubiquitous in my bags, and I've made it a point to always have both of these items available to me wherever I go.
Similarly, Nano is positioned to be the most usable currency in the market. Fast, lightweight, not a big fuss. It's not something that you want to take a second mortgage on your house for (Bitcoin), or indicate social status to use (Apple). It's just what you use, because it's money. I've found the architecture of the Blockchain Lattice to be a beautiful image, which can be referenced in any discussion of Nano, but has much larger implications regarding the security and scalability of the network.

Ah, okay. In that case, stay on the lookout for the Clairefontaine grid lined 3.5x5.5 staple bound notebook. I can't find anyone that carries it online, but I got one at a local stationery store.
It's a very very tiny bit wider than 3.5", but it's a 48 sheet/96 pager. The cover is an ugly one, like this. It should be around that price ($8 for 3 plus shipping).
Edit: and I'm not blasting the Banditapple Peewee at you on purpose, because I have a feeling you'd find it dry and toothy if you love the Rhodia/Clairefontaine paper. =)

Also, unless she's left-handed (and maybe even then), a nice fountain pen. Writing with ball-points destroyed my hand: fountain pens allow you to relax your hand and write with no pressure, plus she can use different colors for different purposes (one color for brief, another for class notes, a third for important rules of black letter law, etc. Plus a single modestly priced pen will pay for itself in disposable pen costs during her time in school. Fahrney's, Goulet pens, and Anderson pens are a few of the good online sites. A lot of people like Lamy as a starter, but there are many good choices.
Finally, a Black's law Dictionary might be nice.
I'd read somewhere that the Ampad Heavyweight Writing Pad, fairly cheap in bulk, was a good choice for fountain pen use--it wasn't. It feathered badly. Whitelines paper, like this is pricier but I haven't had trouble with feathering or bleed-through when using their
perfect-bound and spiral-bound notebooks.
