And yes, it is based on a real thing.

Looks like a dual dispenser. You turn the bottles upside down and turn the wheels to dispense.

Edit - Here's a different style one

You can find some pretty cheap glass decanters with rubber stoppers on amazon, such as this one, which I recently bought.

Two important things to keep in mind when shopping for decanters for an infinity bottle:

  1. Make sure it's made of glass or lead-free crystal. Some crystal is made from lead, which will leach into the whiskey after some time, and is not really safe. Glass decanters have no lead, the product specs and/or Q&A should tell you the material of any decanter you're looking at.

  2. Make sure it has a rubber stopper. Some will have only glass tops, and glass on glass does not form an airtight enough seal for long-term whiskey storage.

And of course, always read the reviews - both of the product and the seller!

You can use the dispensers from these coupled with servos like this project. You can also use solenoid valves, but be aware they need a minimum head pressure to work.

If I built a machine like this, I wouldn't use valves on the liquid path. I'd use an air pump, preferably peristaltic to pressurize the bottles as needed and use a siphon to dispense liquid. If you use air pressure you will always get a relatively consistent amount of liquid without needing to measure it. The pump gets a very large mechanical advantage due to the area ratio of the siphon and bottle, so the liquid pressure won't change how much air gets pumped in a given amount of time.

If you just use the pressure of the liquid in the bottle, the pouring pressure and therefor flow rate will drop as the bottle empties. You can use a flow rate sensor, but there's no guarantee on food safety.

First, Bravo because that's a good way to honor your Fathers Memory.
Secondly, if it were me I would decant it into something classy like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Bormioli-Rocco-Selecta-4-Ounce-Decanter/dp/B002IT6X4I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457524738&sr=8-1&keywords=whisky+bottle

However, if keeping it in the bottle is really important then I would: 1. Strain it into a temporary container.
2. I would get a thin long piece of metal and stab the remaining cork until it broke up.
3. I would rinse the bottle with a little purified water and use a funnel to put the water back in.
Hope this helps

check amazon, here's the first hit when I searched for decanter. Just try & get one with a tight fitting stopper. Or you can possibly macguyver something to get a tight seal & prevent air exposure. But for mixers, you really need something fancy & decorative? Guess I understand the impulse to class up the joint

Another good idea, buy a bottle of Bulleit, then when you're done drinking it remove the label & use it to hold other whiskey, bottle is great

No worries, I don't use a Crystal Decanter. When I first started looking for a decanter, I discovered all of the lead concerns. Thankfully I found a lead-free, non crystal, glass decanter. It looks great, and it was really cheap. I can vouch for its quality, and thankfully it has gotten even cheaper in the last few years (was $40 when i bought it)

Why not get the best of both worlds liquor or for wine? In college we would buy some nice bottles for the start of the year party then we would just refill them with the cheapest shit we could find the rest of the year. You would be surprised how many people that only drink Grey Goose drink Popov just fine out of Gray Goose Bottle.

Anything Buffalo Trace imo. A good side gift would be a decanter or balls of steel !

u/wise-raven · 2 pointsr/GiftIdeas

Does he have any decanters? I have this one and I love it, plus it’s kind of a badass gift. Comes with glasses and whiskey stones. Don’t know if he likes Lagavulin, but I highly recommend, it would be a great addition to round out a special gift.

Edit: I forgot about the Christmas stuff. For stocking stuffers I tend to go with small tech gifts, some sunglasses, candies, a new watch and usually a couple of scratch cards, a new beard trimmer and some bottles of hot sauce if he is into that sort of thing.

Ooh, I've done this search before.

Globe decanter.

Double-walled tumbler. Keeps the warmth of your hands from warming the drink--a positive thing for brandy (which is why you're meant to drink it from snifters) but less so for whiskey.

If you really want to get serious about tasting whiskey, get a set of these glasses (also comes in a set of 4) and a set of old-fashioned glasses. Those are "the" glasses for whiskey tasting.

I feel like you can't go wrong with these, they look just like the ones my parents had when I was growing up and I always really liked them.

These are pretty cool for a cheap/informal option.

I really like this decanter with these glasses and was going to give them as a Christmas gift before I found a nice bar set at an antique shop.

Fun option. Plastic, but they light up!

Drinking horn!

really common item. if no markings on it than it is almost impossible to identify. Most likely lead crystal.

Here is a set that is close with more pieces
Decanter set

Usually see these sets go for $15-20 at flea markets and garage sales

For the small space you're working with, this is a pretty great renovation. If this were my bar, though, I'd take the doors off to make it look less cramped.

Also, pro-tip: For the cheaper liquors that you probably drink more often (if you're anything like me), get a few glass decanters. Pour the cheaper stuff like the Evan Williams in there and get rid of the bottle. The bar will look much classier if you keep the more expensive liquors on display in their respective bottles, but for the cheaper stuff, you can make it look fancy in glass decanters.

Chances are, when your guests ask for whiskey and you pour it from a nice decanter, they won't know it's Evan Williams and they'll assume you gave them some fancy stuff.

Look into a few like this. It's only $12, and you'll save that money back when guests reach for the decanter instead of getting grabby with your good shit: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002IT6X4I/ref=abs_brd_tag_dp?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

That looks like an enormous waste of money. Why not buy a decanter with a glass stopper? nothing is more foodsafe then glass, and since these are used to store alcohol they are airtight as fuck.
