check out this book - The Salt Fix: Why the Experts Got It All Wrong--and How Eating More Might Save Your Life, by Dr. James DiNicolantonio. He is highly regarded in the keto/zerocarb world.

Most people and schools would probably recommend you start with Ted Kaptchuk's The web that has no weaver. Instead I prefer to breakdown my recommendation depending on whom is asking, and why. For patients who want to learn more about CM for diy health purposes, I recommend Legget's book which is 40% TCM theory explanation, and 60% application of those theories to everyday diet. For potential students, I recommend this translation of a first-year textbook for CM students in China, by the excellent Nigel Wiseman. For those interested in the more esoteric theoreticals of CM, I recommend anything by Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee.

And, for anyone really interested in reading "oldest and most enduring book" in Chinese Medicine - which should be every student and practitioner of CM - I would suggest a good translation of the Huangdi neijing. Note my emphasis on a good translation, which sadly excludes the Veith and Ni editions, both of which are quite terrible. If you can get past the dubious biomedical equivalencies he likes to make,Y.C. Kong's translation is composed of important textual excerpts neatly arranged by topic, making it both cheaper and more beginner-friendly than the Unschuld translation.

I am a beginner as well, but I will share the books I'm working my way through. They are not necessarily all beginner books as they range from general overviews to very thorough reference manuals. I hope you find something on the list that helps.

Most have Kindle samples you can download if you use Amazon.

Check out this book: https://www.amazon.com/Salt-Fix-Experts-Wrong--Eating/dp/0451496965/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8

It answers your question but also provides lots of new information. There are also some podcasts with the author out there.

u/matt2001 · 3 pointsr/fasting

My fasting is better with salt - less dizziness and cold feet. Salt amount is not equivalent to sodium and there can be some confusion. 2 to 2.5gm of sodium per day is a low/normal amount. Using table salt that would be about 5gm or a teaspoon.

I read this interesting book recently: The Salt Fix. He will supplement with garlic salt for a better flavor. If your fasting program is flexible, you can get salt in a variety of ways: eat a deal pickle, green olives, hot sauce, bone broth, etc.

u/pugsaredrugs · 2 pointsr/ketoscience

this book has some good info on salt but you can just search youtube with the authors name and he has some good interviews where he drops some very interesting electrolyte knowledge

Cramps and fatigue will tell you if you're getting enough electrolytes. I've never been big on fixed numbers for the day but it certainly works for people. If you're doing hard workouts then I recommend those ketone salts (unflavored). They have a pretty good ratio (although it does have calcium but also a lot of magnesium to go along with it). The whole salt = high blood pressure thing is a bit overrated and not well understood. If you have good functioning kidneys, then you should be able to process huge amounts of salt without any problems and it will actually lower your blood pressure and keep your cardiovascular system healthy. Source.

Check out vitamin D3 + K2(MK7) supplements to help move the calcium into the bone and tissue if you're still cramping after getting enough electrolytes.

I would talk to your doctor / dietitian before taking any of this advice on here. Everyone dietary needs are different.

That being said this is the cookbook my wife bought.
Renal Diet Cookbook: The Low Sodium, Low Potassium, Healthy Kidney Cookbook

There's good recipes in there, but check with your Dr first.

While salt is good for you, try adding it to the food you eat or have a smaller amount if youre going to drink it like a shot. Also recommend you read the Salt Fix https://www.amazon.com/Salt-Fix-Experts-Wrong-Eating-ebook/dp/B01GBAJR9C

I heard this guy on a PodCast within the past few weeks. He talks about 7-10g/day of salt being absolutely reasonable if not recommended especially for those on ketogenic diets. He also talks about human history of salt consumption and justifies these high levels based on our history of eating the WHOLE ANIMAL as opposed to just the meat. Turns out most of the salt is in the rest of the animal. Anyway... Look up this guy. Probably worth buying the book also.

I highly recommend everyone read The Salt Fix. Salt recommendations are built on the same lousy science as nutritional recommendations.
