Oxo can opener, that cuts the can such that the inside diameter of the cam is "clear". It's awesome. I can user a scraper and get everything out. Buy one.

I just want to wrap you up in a cuben fiber tarp and cuddle you while explaining everything will be ok. :)

This will be a learning trip. When you return you will have some great lessons learned about what is needed and what isn't.

For now, I'll just leave you with a link and good hiking wishes.

Supposedly Swing Away was bought out and is cheap crap from China now. The old USA factory makes the good ones under the name ez duz it. I just bought one a few weeks ago and it has opened 3 cans so far. I'll report back in 10 years and let you all know. Make sure to get the black handle one.

Amazon link for anyone interested:
https://www.amazon.com/EZ-DUZ-3028-Deluxe-Opener-Grips/dp/B0071OUJDQ

EDIT:
After looking at the Amazon page, there are counterfeit ones being sold. So make sure you buy directly with Amazon.com as the seller. I remember reading the comments and being careful when buying mine so hopefully I got a good one.

u/mattgif · 45 pointsr/BuyItForLife

They're now called "EZ Duz It." I have one, and it's phenomenal.

Admittedly, the name inspires little confidence, but I'm pretty sure I could bludgeon a bison to death with it, and then smoothly open a can o' beans to go with my 900lbs of fresh meat. So, I'm willing to give the toothless illiterate who named it a pass.

u/tlibasci · 43 pointsr/LifeProTips

Not anymore. They sold the brand and they're being made in China now, and they're shit - crap out of the package, and got even duller very quickly. The EZ-DUZ-IT is, IIRC, made in the old Swing-a-way factory in the US, and it's the bomb. Number one can opener on Amazon right now. Trust me. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0071OUJDQ

u/medicinaltequilla · 39 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Not "life", but my wife & I have been using this Oxo good grip for about 10 years.

u/Twisky · 30 pointsr/BuyItForLife

There are several dozen threads on this if you use the search bar.

Most people recommend the EZ-DUZ-IT which just looks like a standard can opener to me.

u/jazzguitarboy · 29 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Swing-A-Way can openers used to be good, but their production got outsourced. Buy EZ-DUZ-IT instead, made on the original production line.

You don't need to cut the whole rim like these videos do. Cans were commonplace then, I'm sure a compact can opener was standard issue kit. Perhaps something like this:

May I present to you

the best cheapest can openers.

You can get them for cheaper, but I thought i'd link to a simple site.

Also... if you don't always have a knife handy or carry one... I recommend you get a good one and save yourself the humiliation of having to open a can without something sharp.

There's tons, but i'd recommend something

like this

but do try and spend $30+ and go with a knife company that has a good reputation for making quality tools.

EZ-DUZ-IT - look no further

u/jfzastrow · 21 pointsr/BuyItForLife

EZ-DUZ-IT. I'm not kidding.

u/elislider · 20 pointsr/BuyItForLife

every time i see people recommending "old school" can openers, i cringe and have to recommend the "safe cut" or "side cut" can openers. They will last longer because they don't use crazy leverage to puncture the top of a can and a big honking blade that will dull easily. plus you have the added feature of being able to put the lid back on the can if you need to (its not going to re-seal it or anything but its better than no lid at all!)

any of these are going to be fine and last you a while. i have one from ikea i think

I give kind of strange gifts but this year I'm giving my family can openers in their stockings. They're cheap and made in the USA, and last a long time. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0071OUJDQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages01

New addition to my keychain. It's a US army issue can opener first developed back in the 40's. They will last pretty much forever, stories abound of guys still carrying (and using) their grandfathers P-38 which was passed on to them. It's super compact, it pretty much disappears on a keychain and it can be used for a number of other purposes - flat blade screwdriver, scraper, the blade is perfect for cleaning under your nails or opening packages. The name comes from the 38 times you have to puncture a can with it to open it. There is a larger version called the P-51 which is a little heavier duty and easier to operate, but either will open a can easily.

Amazon sells two of them here for three bucks, or you can get a twenty pack here for ten bucks. I bought the twenty pack and scattered some around the house and in my vehicles, figure I will never have to worry about not having a can opener again.

u/TheFinn · 12 pointsr/Cooking

I have always loved OXO stuff. THIS is the can opener my girlfriend has and it is AMAZING. I cannot comment on longevity but it sure seems pretty solid. My parents have an older oxo model that I can't seem find on amazon but it has lasted them forever. The closest I can find is THIS

This is the one I have. It's expensive, but I love it because you can use the lid to reclose the can and the contents will keep in the fridge for a few more days.

EZ-DUZ-IT manual opener

And FWIW I’ve used a few different versions of the OXO openers and they kinda suck.

u/hylysly · 7 pointsr/bugout

That big can opener is way overkill! I had to laugh a little, and I won't be the only one.

Try a P-51: http://www.amazon.com/Pack-Survival-Opener-Military-Model/dp/B005IDQW3S/ref=sr_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1395505324&sr=1-1

I don't even carry a P-51 because I have the equivalent on my multitool, not to mention that a good survival knife will get the job done in a pinch.

u/slowdayhere · 7 pointsr/BuyItForLife

If you buy from Amazon, I highly recommend paying the extra few cents (4 cents right now) and make sure you buy one where the seller is Amazon.com (not just fulfilled by Amazon.com) to reduce the chance of getting a counterfeit.

For instance, two "just launched" Amazon sellers are offering the can opener at the cheapest price of $8.87. Your "made in usa" can opener will be shipped from Brazil and Canada. You can see in the product reviews going back three years that counterfeits are a big problem with this product.

u/nreyes238 · 7 pointsr/knives

You can fix that situation for a mere $6.

u/Figs · 7 pointsr/Cooking

As a single guy who's been living alone for a few years, I'd suggest getting the following. Remember, you can pick up stuff over time; doesn't have to be all at once...

  • Microwave & refrigerator w/ freezer. Your place probably already has these, but if not, put at least a basic version high on your priority list...
  • Electric kettle for boiling water for tea, coffee, etc.
  • A reusable mug, for holding the tea/coffee. I got mine with a single-cup plastic drip coffee maker for $10 or so about 7~8 years ago. I switched to tea a while back, but still use the mug every day... Avoid going to Starbucks and you'll save a lot of money.
  • One decent bowl. One decent plate. Disposable crap for when that's not enough to cut it. Adjust based on how often you have people over; I never have people over.
  • Speaking of disposable stuff: a roll of paper towels and some plastic zip-lock bags.
  • Can opener. I prefer a simple, cheap camping can opener (looks similar to this), but you should get some kind of can opener.
  • Trash can and liners, if you don't already have them.
  • It sounds like you already have a pot and pan. Assuming the pot has a lid, you're probably good there. If not, get a lid. Something to stir the pot with is probably also a good idea -- if you don't already have a cooking spoon of some sort, get one.
  • Cutting board and a knife.
  • Sponges and a bottle of dish soap. Those pots and pans aren't going to scrub themselves...
  • Eating utensils -- e.g. fork, knife, spoon. Can be disposable or reusable, but you should have at least something to eat with...
  • Measuring cups and measuring spoons. (e.g. teaspoon, tablespoon) You can probably buy cheap plastic ones at your grocery store.
  • Salt and pepper. Cooking oil. (e.g. corn oil or some other kind of vegetable oil.)
  • Basic food stuff. I'd recommend always keeping at least the basics for making sandwiches (e.g. bread + lunch meat + mayo), milk and cereal, and a few microwave dinners on hand for when things go wrong or you don't feel like cooking.
u/subtledoubt · 7 pointsr/Survivalist

I would have a P-38 or P-51 military style can opener. They are small, and can also be used as a small blade or box cutter in case of emergency. I keep one on key ring. I also have this tiny flashlight which you could make smaller by removing the clip that hooks to a keychain. It is tiny and bright. A universal handcuff key, a tiny firesteel you can scrape with the P-38 can opener, and a tiny compass. Those are nice places to start.

u/ticktocktoe · 6 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Try these OXO smooth edge ones. I bought them about 6 yrs ago after having gone through about 3 openers in one month and being sick of it. I expect them to keep working for a long time to come.

Made in USA took over the former Swing-A-Way factory when production of Swing-A-Way moved to China. Made in USA is every bit as BIFL as Swing-A-Way used to be.

u/souldust · 5 pointsr/homeless

Forget the pull top and get yourself a CAN OPENER. Scour your local good wills or second hand stores and find yourself one of those edge can openers because it creates a lid so that you can close your cans again, but the lid has no sharp edges to cut yourself on. Like this:

https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Smooth-Opener/dp/B000079XW2

I've been surviving on dollar tree's $1 can of beef stew and bolillo rolls from Kroger. So long as you keep your bag of bread closed they won't dry out, but they won't last more than 4 days.

Peanut butter, also oats. But really its all about your canned foods. Get mixed vegitable canned foods.

Dollar tree has your best price because you need to stretch out your dollar per day.

Your beef jerky is a waste of money because its not really good source of protein. When it comes to grams of protein per dollar nothing beats black beans, but, I ate nothing but black beans and ended up shitting my guts out so your next best source is canned tuna fish, or the $1 beef stews mentioned above.

As for your chocolate craving, good luck. m&ms won't melt, but they are expensive.

Best of luck!!

u/RAGING_VEGETARIAN · 5 pointsr/BuyItForLife

So this is against the grain of most of the can opener recommendations I see here, but I really like OXO's smooth-edge can openers. My parents have the design with two arms, and I have this one with one arm. The two-arm one is better IMO, because the lid can get stuck in the one-armed opener after it's been taken off the can. But both are great openers.

Honestly all of the good grips stuff is super high quality and super comfortable to use. I own a few things from that line, it's all lasted beyond 5 years with only the most minor cosmetic damage (for example a tiny dent on a spatula handle because I accidentally left it in a hot skillet.) It's all really rust-resistant and the grips are super nice and super durable.

Plus, I like the smooth-edge openers a lot more than the traditional kind. If you've only used the more traditional kind of opener it can take some getting used to because it doesn't "feel" like it's cutting. But it takes the lid off in a much more pleasing and precise way and there's no sharp or rough edges on the can or lid that you can cut yourself on. Instead of cutting metal, I think they sort of peel it back and cut through the epoxy seal that glues the lid onto the can.

u/h_lehmann · 5 pointsr/Cooking

I have one of these:
OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener

It's worked great for years and doesn't leave any sharp edges on the can. For non-electric kitchen appliances I've always had good luck with Oxo.

u/wiscondinavian · 5 pointsr/personalfinance

I'm going assume that you are in a moving out of your parents' house-type situation, so you have clothes, a personal computer, and personal toiletries (shampoo, razor, toothpaste, etc.) already

Bedroom: (Total: $195)

  • Mattress ($100): I can sleep on anything, so I'd start cheap, but this would be the first thing I'd replace
  • Sheets ($10)
  • Heated mattress pad ($30): Instead of investing in a lot of cheap blankets, a heated mattress pad will get you through the coldest of nights
  • Blankets ($30): 1 wool blanket from Goodwill, 1 fleece blanket from Walmart
  • Pillow ($15)
  • Lamp ($10): Maybe this is just me, but I love reading before bed, so lamps are useful!

    Living room: (Total $640)

  • Couch/Futon ($400): my sister got an AWESOME, over-sized couch for $500 8 years ago from a discount place, and the thing looks good as new. Getting a great deal on a couch can take a couple of months, but I think it's totally worth it. Okay, maybe you don't have time to wait and you need someone to hold visitors for a while. I'd get something like this
  • Coffee table ($20): Walmart, Goodwill, Craigslist, etc
  • TV ($200) + TV stand ($20): I'd hold off on buying a TV if you have a computer/large smartphone. Maybe you can't hold off, so you get a cheapo 32" TV If this thing lasts you 5 years I'd count you as lucky. Get a TV stand used.

    Bathroom: (Total:$67)

  • Toilet plunger + brush ($10): First thing you should buy for your apartment
  • Toilet paper ($10)
  • Shower curtain + Liner: ($15)
  • 2 towels ($20)
  • liquid hand soap ($2)
  • Rug ($10): Honestly I hate those terryloop/shag rugs that they sell for use in the bathroom and I use a cheapo weaved rug. I can't seem to find these on Walmart however, but they're like $5 in my country's Walmart equivolent

    Kitchen: (Total: $430 + $200 reserved for future + $200 in food = $830)

  • Most places in the US include a fridge and oven. Microwave is iffy, so I'll say you have to buy that (although, you could definitely hold off on a microwave/water kettle, I just find them so convenient)
  • Microwave ($50)
  • Electric water kettle ($15)
  • 1 large pot, 1 sauce pan, 1 large frying pan, 1 small frying pan, 4 plates... fuck it. Everything for $60. Take $200 and gradually replace key pieces at Goodwill/Garage sales/etc. over time
  • Can opener ($9): Yes, there's a canopener in the set, but honestly, a bad canopener is more frustrating for me than a bad knife.
  • Microwave-safe sealed containers ($16)
  • Pyrex/Corning-like baking dishes ($30): can usually be found for cheap at Goodwill
  • Baking pans ($25)
  • Mixing bowl set with lids ($15)
  • Dish drying rack ($10)
  • Sponge and soap ($5)
  • Dish towels ($15): get something absorbent here
  • Oven mitt/pot holders ($15)
  • Hot pads ($5)
  • Wine key ($10): You might not have wine glasses, but you have mugs! Keep it classy. This is also a beer bottle opener. I bought a cheap $15 set of wine glasses a couple of years ago and they're still going strong. If you like wine/having friends over, a set of cheap wine glasses would be good to have, but I'm not going to include them in this list.
  • Food basics ($200): Spices, oil, cocoa, flour, rice, pasta, etc.

    Cleaning supplies: ($103)

  • Really depends on the place, but lets say you don't have carpet.
  • Broom and dust pan ($10)
  • Mop and bucket ($20)
  • Gallon of bleach ($4)
  • air freshener ($2)
  • 3 garbage pails (Kitchen, bedroom, bathroom) ($15)
  • Rubber gloves ($5)
  • Laundry detergent ($10)
  • Glass/window cleaner ($2)
  • toilet bowl cleaner ($5)
  • multi-purpose cleaner ($5)
  • microfiber washclothes ($10)
  • Paper towels ($5)

    Total: $1835

Leaving you with $165 for your first week's of food!
u/Stupoopy · 5 pointsr/Cooking

Get the new one. The vintage stuff is cool, but make your own vintage stuff.

The point of getting vintage stuff now is that a lot of it is considered high quality. In this case, you have access to the same quality new. The bonus is that you support American folks making your high quality materials. The resale market adds little to the people pressing these things out.

EZ DUZ IT has multiple colors too.

Food, think of it as a camping trip, or survival situation. Bring only what you will actually eat. And haul out all your trash when you leave. Since refrigeration isn't possible, bring non-perishable stuff. If you bring cans, don't forget the can opener. Better yet, get one of these on your key chain and you'll never be without a can opener. When we went we had an RV, but we still primarily brought canned, pickled and dried goods. Pickles, cheese, assorted crackers, salami, ramen, tuna, bread, apples, oranges, oh and trash bags. Since you're in a tent, if you wanna have something warm one day, maybe coffee, tea or even soup, pick yourself up a cheap little backpacking stove and if you wanna get really fancy, get a cheap little mess kit too.

As for "bartering" from other people for food, or in essence "mooching", c'mon man, you don't wanna do that. Radical self reliance, not radical rely on others. Like /u/OMGparty said, read the Survival Guide. Don't be "that guy".

As for water, as a general rile of thumb 1 gallon a day is enough to just get by and not cramp up if you're eating really light, 2 is better, especially if you plan on eating normally, 3 if you are drinking and dealing with the heat, mild physical activity.

Eccentriczebpajamas, congrats!

Fellow hEDS, got married last July (pre-diagnosis), and I think I’ve got some ideas for you:

For the shoes, not sure where to look - I have really HUGE feel (size 12-13 women’s), so I struggled too, but ended up finding a cheap pair that looked great and kinda worked for me. They were tolerable but not comfortable, and I regret not focusing more time on finding a better pair.

For the registry, I’ve had really good luck with the OXO Good Grips series of stuff (their handles are chunky enough that I don’t tend to sublux my fingers, even gripping hard)

The can opener I use is a blue version of this one: (OXO Good Grips Can Opener https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004OCJW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_5-Z.zbZ5E94HD)

They also have a kitchen starter set that might be good to work with:(OXO Good Grips 15-Piece Everyday Kitchen Tool Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000IELD9A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Ka0.zbT8JYQX5)

When I can cook, I use these gloves instead of potholders - they’re great for the heat, don’t require as much hand strength/fine motor skills as potholders would, and also do a great job at gripping/opening stuck can lids: (Silicone Oven Gloves Extra Thick Heat Resistant Oven Mitts from Aocome, for Cooking Grilling BBQ and Baking, Quilted Cotton Lining, Waterproof Non-Slip Grip Food Grade Safe 1 Pair https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J76A9AI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_id0.zbEAKKA40)

For sitting, this chair is my favorite. Looks goofy, but hurts WAY less than anything else I’ve tried:
(Gaiam Balance Ball Chair - Classic Yoga Ball Chair with 52cm Stability Ball, Pump & Exercise Guide for Home or Office, Purple https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006FFR37W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6e0.zb9Y7MDYQ)

A WiFi blood pressure monitor like the one from Nokia (I have the older Withings version) can be great for helping keep track of your overall health (along with things like FitBits, WiFi thermometers, etc., if you’re into that: (Nokia BPM+ – Compact Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071F2MC29/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Qg0.zb3J5YKKN)

Finally, if you have room, a shower stool can be super helpful if you spend too many spoons in one place and struggle to stand up in the shower (there are lots of types, including pretty wooden ones, but this type is really easy to assemble): (Medokare Shower Stool with Padded Seat - Shower Seats for Seniors with Tote Bag, Shower Bench Bath Chair, Handicap Shower Seat for Adults, Shower Stools and Benches https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XXZQ4XS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_mj0.zb5C9TRYX)

Oh! And bonus last-minute add: overhead lights that you can turn off from your phone, so you can go to bed and THEN turn off the lights, instead of trying to fumble your way across your room in the dark (they can also turn your room into a bright rainbow disco, if you’re into that): (Philips Hue 464479 60W Equivalent White and Color Ambiance A19 Starter Kit, 3rd Generation, Works with Amazon Alexa https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y3QXSGX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_0l0.zb2N2PB53)

Good luck, and I hope you have a wonderful wedding day!

...ETA, this set of pots and pans! I have this one by OXO http://www.amazon.com/OXO-58081-Steel-Can-Opener/dp/B00004OCMM/ref=sr_1_2?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1367368106&sr=1-2&keywords=oxo+can+opener

It just feels really nice (has a good weight) and hasn't failed me in opening any cans yet. I haven't owned it too long so I can't speak to the longevity of it.

I inherited a can opener when I moved out. I love this can opener. I will punch someone if they try to take my can opener.

It's this, but from the 70s: https://www.amazon.com/Swing-A-Way-Portable-Can-Opener-White/dp/B0000505IZ

It has last like 40 years and is by far the best can opener I have ever used. I buy it for housewarmings and kids moving out.

Nowadays, I tend to ask for consumables, because they get consumed.

You can also check out recommendations on /r/buyitforlife for great tools. It really depends on what you need or want to upgrade. For example, I love the OXO can opener. And I have a whole list of things like that, but it's hard to recommend them without knowing how you cook and/or what's already in your kitchen.

u/linlicker · 3 pointsr/incrementalcookbook

A good can opener.

When I first moved out of my parents' house, I bought this cheap ass can opener that broke the first time I used it. A friend of mine suggested this one and its probably the best can opener i've ever used. It's $12. I got it in June and it's still working fine.

A potato peeler.

This one may seem unnecessary, but when you do have to peel potatoes, you're thanking sweet baby jesus that you have one.

A thermometer

edit: Forgot an important one

Containers
If you're broke, buy microwavable containers instead of bowls/plates.

For can openers, I wonder if any one has tried the Super Kim. My Swingaway is slowly losing it's ease of use.

Actually you don't want to buy the current Swing-A-Way as it is pretty cheaply made. Ez-Duz-It is the can opener you want, made in America, and supposedly its made by the same people who produced the origianal Swing-A-Way

u/rogerclee · 3 pointsr/AskCulinary

I would recommend the EZ-DUZ-IT without reservation for a new can opener, manual or otherwise:

http://www.amazon.com/EZ-DUZ-IT-Deluxe-Opener-Black-Grips/dp/B0071OUJDQ

The blade is sharp and grips the can easily, and it turns like butter due to the huge amount of torque you can generate with the oversized handle.

[this] (http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Can-Opener/dp/B00004OCJW) is the one we have. The handles have come off enough I did some minor surgery with superglue, but they stay on and it's functional! I've had this can opener for the last 16 years. No sharp edges, and you can even put the top back on the can like a lid for short term storage. Blades don't touch the contents of the can and it's dishwasher safe. If it ever breaks, I'm buying another one.

Oxo Can Opener (Amazon) opens the can at the side instead of the end. I usually have to drive it around can 2-3 times to get a complete cut. But it makes a nice smooth opening.

u/zymurgtechnician · 2 pointsr/TheBrewery

You sir are correct! A good micrometer, a sharp pair of dykes, a "safety" can opener (something like this ) and a good dial depth gauge are what you really need. If you aren't cutting the seam and taking internal measurements then you are really just guessing.

Seam overlap (which is actually a calculated measurement), wrinkle rating, and making sure the sealing compound is making good contact are the most critical measurements. All of which can only be checked by cutting that sucker and pulling it apart.

Do you buy cans from ball or crown? Both of them should send out a seamer tech if you just call them up who will walk you through the adjustments, taking proper measurements, and what the specs on your exact can/end combo should be.

u/Hollywoodz · 2 pointsr/Survival

When my ex and I split, I took just the bare minimum of kitchen things. Totally forgot a can opener.

I decided to be all fancy and not microwave my dinner one night and was halfway through cooking when I realized my mistake as I stared at a can of black beans.

I stabbed that thing with a chef's knife until I could pry open a triangle-shaped opening on the top and then shook it like a polaroid picture until I had everything.

I'm still amazed to this day I didn't chop off a finger.

Also, The Sweethome recommends this bad boy and I love it.

Storage Containers
Ace Hardware
[Target] (http://www.target.com/p/kerr-1-quart-32-oz-wide-mouth-mason-jar-set-of-12/-/A-14527331)
Rather than getting tupperware get a flat of quart size mason jars. Doesn't spill in transport, works in the freezer, microwave proof without the lid, and doesn't absorb smells or warp with frequent use.
*Alternative is to save glass jars from groceries and wash them for use

Coffee Maker
Get a single cone coffee brewer if you drink coffee. You can buy it on amazon or find it in the coffee section at walmart/target/any grocery really.

Can Opener
Don't buy a can opener at the dollar store or CVS in a bind. Just order this one. I've had it for years with frequent use.

If you have an ikea nearby, they also have a great kitchen section especially for inexpensive flatware sets.

Hey man, some quick tips on your bag. First, figure out its purpose. Is it designed to get you from work to home, where you have more resources? Or are you planning on being supported by it for longer periods of time?

-Lose the can opener and get something like this. That thing is way too much weight to carry for the possibility that you may have to open a can of spaghetti-o's.

-You're going to need more water, especially if you plan on eating those brick rations. Throw in some bottled water and just swap it out every so often.

-You need better first aid. As I see it, you pretty much have pills and bandaids. Since you're just starting out, I recommend going to a sporting goods store and picking up two things-- a premade first aid kit (whatever size/price you're comfortable with, as long as you know how to use everything in it) and a small tackle box to keep all those pills in. Write the medication type, how many mg per pill, and expiration date on each compartment. No sense in carrying around all those bottles.

-You need a better multitool. You don't need to buy an eighty dollar Leatherman, but that thing looks like you got it out of a cereal box. A couple of weeks ago I picked up this knife and multitool set from Home Depot, and they're pretty good for backups. Husky hand tools also have a lifetime warranty.

-You need a better flashlight. /r/flashlight can help you out here.

-You could probably stand to lose a blade or two.

-What do you have planned for the smoke bombs?

-Check out /r/bugout.

I really love these, but you'll have to be willing to learn how to get good at using them.

u/Hammerhil · 2 pointsr/Survival

Here are some recommendations. If you are doing batoning and splitting, I would recommend something with a thick spine (and learning how to do it correctly). I wouldn't open cans with my knife because it's a poor tool choice for that and there are plenty of dirt cheap can openers.

Here are a few options:

KA Bar Becker companion in 1095 steel

Ontario Rat 3 in 1095

Morakniv Companion Heavy Duty carbon blade

cheap US army can openers so you don't damage your knife or hands opening cans

These are some good high carbon blades in a variety of prices. I do recommend buying one you can feel to get a good idea if the grip is right, but this should give you some variety of makes and what they offer. These are all black anodized coatings which will help keep rust away. My preference is for a knife in the 7 inch length range for chopping, no serrations (pain to upkeep and don't cut, they rip) and a neutral finish because black knives are hard to find if you drop it in the dark. NEVER buy a knife that isn't full tang.

Go out and get a feel for handles, blade shapes and lengths and try what you can borrow before making a decision.

I had pretty much the same problem as you. I had a can opener that had been going strong for 20+ years, but it was all metal and was getting rusted. I eventually threw it out and got another metal can opener. I tried to open a large can with it, and it basically crapped out on it. Frustrated that I had already thrown away my 20 year old can opener, I decided to get one that I would be able to keep for 20 more years again.

I was thinking more of the smooth edge style openers that don't cut the can, they release the factory seal.

If you are worried about the sharp edges then get a can opener that doesn't leave them like this.

Get a big can of soup and a smooth-edge can opener. Open the can, cook the soup, and eat said soup. Rinse out the can and superglue the lid back in place. Stab the lid with a utility knife or an old kitchen knife to make a blade-sized slot. And there you have it--safe blade disposal for the next several years.

When it finally fills up, double-check that the lid is on tight, put some tape across the slot, and chuck it in your recycling bin. You might want to confirm that your recycling provider can accept an aluminum can full of steel blades, but any recycling facility that has moderately-recent sorting technology should be able to handle it just fine. Some people also suggest that you attach a piece of tape with a warning message written on it ("Warning: contains sharp blades," or something to that effect).

By the way, you should check out this sub's wiki. It covers this very subject, plus a lot of other common questions that new folks in often have.

I love this canopener. I have wrist issues and struggled with them, this one is super easy. You put it on a can like normal, but when you squeeze the things together they lock shut so all you have to do is turn the knob. Don't go for the ones that cut around the side of the can, those legit are dangerous and you also can't use lid covers.

u/absurdlyobfuscated · 1 pointr/AskReddit

I have the Zyliss can opener that works pretty much exactly the same (and is under $15, though I actually found one cheaper than that at Whole Foods - go figure). Really, there is no reason you wouldn't want one of these over a traditional can opener that give you can lids with razor-sharp edges. Highly recommend it. Seriously.

You can even replace the lid on the can after opening, so it's great when you open a can and empty half of it, and then just slap on the lid and throw it in the fridge.

u/Scroon · 1 pointr/MedicalGore

My kitchen is pretty full of various devices. Let's see:

  • Asian hot water pot. I love tea, so it's nice to just hold the "dispense" button and get a mug of boiling water.
  • Speaking of tea, skip tea bags (unless you're using these for your own tea, which you probably only need for really fine stuff like chamomile). Instead I use this tea infuser, which works great for most teas. This one isn't very good at infusing tea, but it is really cute.
  • Prefer coffee? Get a French press; it's pretty cheap and it's way better than drop coffee. You just need a cheap coffee grinder so you can have fresh grounds.
  • Yes, I said a cheap coffee grinder. You can upgrade to a nice burr grinder later, and that will free up your cheap blade grinder for spice duty!
  • Asian rice cooker with fuzzy logic. I manage to burn rice on the stove, and the dumb mechanical rice cookers are no better. This thing is fantastic, and useful for more than just plain white rice. Mixed or brown rice, jambalaya, etc...
  • Toaster oven. I end up using this a lot, either to cook small meals (pizza bites, or breakfast (two slices of bacon, two frozen fried chicken strips, two frozen biscuits, 20 minutes at 375)) or for actually toasting things (I insist on toasting hamburger and hot dog buns).
  • Kitchen scale. I'm using a crappy spring model, but soon I intend to get a decent electronic one. Just read this article from NYT if you're not convinced of why a scale should be a must-have. I'll probably buy the scale suggested by Cooking for Engineers.
  • Microplane grater. I just bought it, and it rocks. Citrus zest, cheese, nutmeg...
  • Tongs. I don't know how I got by for so long without them.
  • Cast iron skillet. It's easily my favorite pan to cook in, because I can do so much with it.
  • Do you need a pepper grinder? Get the Unicorn 9" Magnum Black. Nevermind what it sounds like, just buy this one; don't even bother shopping around for others. It's that good.
  • Instant-read thermometer. I don't know if I recommend the exact one I have (a $20 from Taylor, which may have already broken) but having one is essential. Now that I'm using it I'm realizing how badly I was overcooking a lot of meat and sausage.
  • I have something like this "safe" can opener, which cuts the can open from the side rather than the top. The idea is that you're only cutting through glue, and so the blade never touches food, which is a big hazard for contamination since people rarely clean their can openers thoroughly enough. So this is great in principle, but not all cans are equal, and sometimes it just totally fails to open some cans.
  • Kitchenaid mixer. My mom got it for me for my birthday, and I have to say it's damn good, if you mix things a lot. Does a much better job than other mixers I've used. I also got the grinder attachment, which I've been experimenting with, so that gives the kitchenaid a bit more use.
  • Slow cooker. Shouldn't be any surprise there why it's useful.
  • Walmart's Tramontina stainless steel pans are about as good as All-Clad, but less than half the price. (Shocking! Quality stuff from Walmart?) I just got them so they haven't seen much use (see above comment about cast iron skillet) but I can already tell how nice they are compared to the bargain stuff I was using before.

This Nogent is by far the best can opener I've ever owned. It's so easy to use even with massive cans or tiny ones like tomato paste.

u/boredintheoffice2 · 1 pointr/AskUK

I got one of these can openers. It leaves a smooth finish so you don't cut yourself. Being left handed I found it easier to use then conventional ones

u/hereamiinthistincan · 1 pointr/specializedtools

I use a relatively small Nogent can opener. There is a cutting blade instead of the more common cutting wheel. This leaves the lid edge more jagged. Perhaps a problem if used by a child. I store it on a magnet fixed to the side of cabinet.

I can't speak to a jar opener, but this: https://www.amazon.ca/Chefn-EzSqueeze-One-Handed-Opener-Meringue/dp/B002XUUSFC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1519600958&sr=8-2&keywords=one+handed+can+opener is the can opener we have and my seven year old son (full left hand amputee) can operate it very successfully. The magnet at the front is perfect for lifting the lid out of the can and frankly I never want another can opener now that we've got this one and I currently have two functioning hands.

Something similar for jars would be awesome, though.

u/kalechipsyes · 1 pointr/Advice

Another amazon find:

One-Handed Can Opener

No electric parts. Basically works like a regular can opener, but uses a squeezing motion instead of a twisting motion, so you can operate it with one hand.

Edit: One of the pictures shows a second hand, but I am pretty sure that it just to show that it opens up for easy of cleaning. You can probably use a table edge to help you pry it open.

From Season 8: Easy Skillet Suppers

NOTE:
For the winner by OXO THIS is the model shown in the test results and THIS is the newer model. ~OP

TESTING NOTES

WINNER:
Magnetic Locking Can Opener by Oxo - $19.99

> This can opener was intuitive to use and easy to attach and detach from cans. It was "comfortable," "very smooth," and very efficient in operation. Because it is a traditional opener, this model leaves a lid with sharp edges (its only downfall), but minimizes potential danger with a magnet that allows "neat and safe" lid disposal.

3 others were also RECOMMENDED:

  • Kuhn Rikon Slim Safety Lidlifter - $11.95

    > Testers praised the handy "change in feeling" once the can was completely open. The "dishwasher-safe claim was spot-on: There were no changes in performance or appearance after several wash cycles. A few testers has mild complaints about the "awkward position" of the oversized turning knob, resulting in a slight demerit in the performance rating.

  • Progressive International Safety I-Can Opener - $12.79

    > The unique ratchet cutting wheel mechanism was "easy to operate" and comfortable, but was "hard to know when finished." Pincers disposed of the cut lid safely. For some testers, the instructions for this opener were "not obvious," even with visuals on the packaging.

  • Good Cook 4-1 HT Safe Can Opener - $9.99

    > "Clearly written instructions" and "smooth gears" made this opener easy and efficient as first use. Also, testers appreciated the "perceptible change in feeling" when the can opener had rounded the entire can. This model lost a few points for not having a lid-gripper.

2 others were RECOMMENDED WITH RESERVATIONS:

  • Zyliss Safe Edge Can Opener - $14.95
  • Miu CanDo Safety Can Opener - $9.99

    2 others were NOT RECOMMENDED:

  • Chef'n EZ Squeeze 1-Handed Can Opener
  • CIA Masters Collections Side Can Opener

u/readysteadyjedi · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

Thanks for such a thorough reply!

> First thing you will need is a chest freezer to convert. When looking for a freezer I recommend going and seeing them in person - bring some cardboard that’s been cut to the sizes of kegs plus one inch. A half barrel is 16” diameter - Quarter barrel is 11” - Sixth barrel is 9”. I’d recommend cutting 2-3 of each so you can see how many combinations you can put together. Maybe you want to fit a half barrel and two sixth barrels or 3 quarter barrels - remember we are looking at possible future use not just the wedding. You may want to keep a backup in the keezer to have it ready to go - unless you have a secondary cooler location.

I've read elsewhere about the cardboard cutout technique, planning on doing this at Sears, Lowes and Best buy in the coming days. Sears and Lowes have a few 5-7cu freezers in the $170-$200 range (Kenmore and Idylis seem to be the ones in that price range), and I'm hoping one will have the right mixture of footprint, running cost and reviews. Great point about mixing sizes too - it will make sense to keep a spare in there in case we run out of one type of beer while we have guests.

> Once you’ve got the freezer chosen we need to make sure it is the right temperature - for this we need a temperature controller. This is the most common style but if buying new I’d recommend this as it looks nicer and you can eventually build it into the collar if you’d like.

Second one looks good - will likely build it into the collar first day. Was suggested this by another poster - any opinions on it?

> You need a CO2 tank - most kits don’t come with this and you need it. Really any size you find will work - you can either store it in the freezer or next to it. If you get one that is short enough you can put it on the shelf in the freezer that usually just ends up being wasted space. It should be kept upright though.

From looking around it seems people go for 5lb minimum, so I was budgeting Beverage Factory's 5 lb. Aluminum Co2 Tank at $56.95 - I've checked Craigslist locally as well as Ebay and I'm not improving on that price. They do sell a 2.5 lb. Aluminum Co2 Tank but at $55.99 I'm not seeing the advantage other than it saving me 4.25" in height, although I guess I should check see if that's the difference between getting it on the shelf or not.

> Once you’ve got the freezer, temperature controller, and CO2 tank you can use the starter kits. Between the two that you linked the only difference is the addition of a line cleaner and a drip tray. Both of those can be purchased in the future and for home set ups with the volume you’ll likely use you can get away with just replacing the lines every once in a while.

> I recommend spending the bit extra for stainless steel faucets. The chrome eventually wears off and brass isn’t good for beer. Perlicks are the style of faucet that are front closing instead of rear closing. There are a lot of benefits to them (including easier cleaning) and if you don’t mind the bit extra go for them instead of a standard stainless steel faucet.

The two I linked are much the same save the extras as you say. Looking back at the kits they have that come without cleaner and tray, the difference I see between the $164.99 Standard and the $229.99 Premium kit is the addition of stainless steel perlick faucets - there is an option to build your own kit with them, and there the difference between faucets is $29, so why the kits are $65 apart, I have no idea. I've emailed them to ask as it makes no sense to me.

> You’ll need an S coupler for your Heineken and Amstel kegs - swapping is easy but you do need a different coupler. Here I’d recommend adding wing nuts instead of hex nuts - it’ll make taking them on and off the coupler easier. Basically you just won’t need any tools.

That's a great tip, thanks!

> In my experience the pricing it roughly the same in a kit or individually - for me it’s easier to customize when I pick things individually though.

I can definitely see the advantage, but I think at my starter level I'm happier to go with the kit to ensure I have all the nuts etc that I might miss out on if buying seperately.

Thanks again, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Edit: Another question while I think of it - I've seen a few people put fans inside the keezer to encourage airflow - would you reccomend this?

u/IrishHomebrewer · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

What /bodobeers said. I just bought an igloo 5.1 cuft chest freezer just for fermentation. (My bigger chest freezer is being turned into a keezer.) Got a slightly dinged one from Home Depot for ~$130, new ones are~$160-200 depending on brand. You can go with a 3cuft chest freezer (about same price, less space width wise than 5.1), but you will have to make a collar for it to fit carboy+airlock due to the hump. you can get the plugin Inkbird controller for around ~$30-40 for a cheaper temp controller with doesn't require wiring. If you want to be more precise with the Inkbird though, you will also need a heating element. If you don't mind it being off by 5 or degrees then you are ok with cold side only. I have one of the more expensive Johnson Controllers that are pretty precise with just cold side for my fermenter, and an Inkbird for my bigger keezer build for I'm not as concerned about exact temperature with the keezer.

Pre-wired Inkbird

Johnson's link to buy: Amazon

u/Waxmaker · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

Sure, an easy way to deal with that is a Johnson temperature control unit. You plug the freezer into it, plug it into the wall, set the desired temp on the unit, run the temperature probe attached to the unit down into the freezer, and when it senses the freezer getting too warm, it turns on the power until it's back down to temp, then cuts it off again. More technically inclined people hardwire a panel directly into the freezer itself, but this method works quite well.

u/slash178 · 1 pointr/NoStupidQuestions

I've had the same experience! I think a big thing is that there is a lot of moisture in your kitchen, and the gears on your can opener are becoming rusty and not spinning right. u/louisjms · 1 pointr/Coffee

Sage by Breville The Smart Grinder Pro (long stupid name I know) has all the above - whilst it probably isn't great for espresso, maybe on par with the Baratza Encore, it has the ability to dose for up to 12 cups and shots, all of which are completely programmable but come preset. It has a removable upper burr with 11 extra fine tune settings, so in total you effectively have 60 (default) * 11 precision grind settings.

It also comes with a nice pot to grind into. It's available on Amazon

u/SideburnsOfDoom · 1 pointr/Coffee

The summary seem to be that they are comparable, both are good for pour-over but not espresso.

And the Wilfa is arguably a bit nicer, and is a bit cheaper (in the UK anyway).

the next step up is probably a Sage grinder at about £200
