A good ferro rod: Light My Fire Firesteel Army. Works reliably for me and is fairly beefy. Delivers a nice big spark.

"Best" fire starter: A Bic lighter or two with the child guard removed for using in general, with (stormproof matches](https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B004PIBWW8/) and some kind of prepared/chemical longer (like WetFire, cotton balls and vaseline, etc) as a backup.

I haven't ever had a bic lighter fail on me. Even if it gets wet, blowing on it to dry it out usually will get it working in under a minute. Remove the child safety thing to make it a bit easier to use.

The matches are a backup because it takes less fine motor skills to use them - you can clench them in a fist and sort of stab them against the striker and it'll usually get them lit. The stormproof one's burn a pretty long time and are hard to extinguish. The engineered tinder should be dry when nothing else is and save you some time prepping the finer tinder when you need a fire quickly. Both of these factors matter when you're wet and hypothermic and you're shaking too hard to use the lighter and it was just pouring rain so fine tinder isn't available quickly and easily.

I have never used those Coleman matches so I can't really critique them but I highly recommend UCO matches . They are waterproof, windproof, you can light them, stick them in water, pull them out and they will still be lit.

I think you could fit more in here, maybe some lint from a dryer to fill some empty spaces?

u/Sooner70 · 5 pointsr/whatisthisthing

FWIW, you can still buy old school "strike anywhere" matches. They're just harder to find....

Watch this first (once YouTube's fixed). . A magician died when a lit cigar hit a crate of flash paper in his car. Unfortunately he died after six months in the hospital without skin.

  1. Do a FULL practice run. Buy twice as much and test it out. Don't test 1/4, quadruple it, then go live.

  2. Stand away. Light it with something long, remote, or just back way up. Hell, use a Pyro Mini (probably won't actually work). Really, just get some long matches.

  3. Do not light near her hair... hairspray is flammable.

  4. Well ventilated area with no wind.

Probably windproof matches, they have extra long tips that burn down like a fuse

Immediately checked Amazon.fr, and no surprise: 33,42 €

Yo.

This weapon, which is waterproof, and freakin' awesome, would assist in the demolition of the zombies.

I believe I would want /u/cheeseburger_humper on my team (due to his tatical abilities to kick ass), and /u/Sp3cia1K (due to her ability to be resourceful and calm when tension is rising).

And because we are tuff.

u/babblepedia · 2 pointsr/Gifts

What is your budget? You say under $100, but what exactly does that mean - $20, $40, $80?

My fiance and I are in a similar (reversed) situation. He's a part-time intern and finishing college, and I work full time in a good job. The stuff I want, but have not purchased for myself, is definitely all out of his price range.

Hiking ideas:

  • Backpacker handbook and/or local trail guidebook
  • Super light travel games, like mini UNO
  • K9 H20 Travel Water Bottle (a water bottle with a built-in drinking cup for dogs, perfect for hikers - like $20 at PetCo)
  • $13 Hammer/Multitool, good guy gift in general
  • $8 Waterproof Match Kit
  • Tent light (around $45 at sporting good store... you can probably find a push light cheaper in a non-hiking section)
  • Wool hat/gloves/boot socks

    Kitchen stuff:

  • Cast iron skillet ($40ish) for making bomb steaks
  • Drink stones (usually plastic or metal, for cooling liquor without watering it down - $10+ at Target)
  • $50 monogrammed steak branding iron
  • Manly apron
  • French press for coffee

Here is a quick primer on lighting and cutting methods

Lighting

Matches

Let the sulfur burn off for a few seconds before attempting a light

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005MBHFJG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_f4aYAb3ZHW2YM

Lighter

A Bic works, so does your Zippo. Butane is the favorite as it avoids imparting fuel flavor.

Here is that insert: http://r.ebay.com/fAryec

Here is the fuel. Cheaper stuff works, but this won't clog your lighter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G5IPKIS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0QaYAbF4CSGG8

Cedar Spills

This is the purist's prefered lighting method. You look and feel cool doing it, and the cedar provides a pleasant aroma.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XTWNWYW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_9YaYAbTGKC6DR

Cutting

Guillotine/Straight Cutter

Most popular method, don't skip out on cutters so you don't destroy your cigar with dull blades. Anything $5 and up is great.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RPOEMJY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_d6aYAb4481ZS9

Punch Cutter

Provides a tighter draw and focuses the smoke to a smaller area. Not for everyone, preferred by some.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0141KENXE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_x7aYAbAXG2QHG

V Cutter

Cuts a valley straight across the head of the cigar. Tighter draw than a straight cutter, more open than a punch.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H9HTXHS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_R8aYAbWE8SEE4

All 3

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017C2UUIA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_G9aYAbNY4KTRT

Cigar Scissors

This method (arguably) gives the most accurate cut since you can see what you're doing easier.

You might ask /r/cigars where they get cigar matches. I can't for the life of me find any long matches in stores down here.

EDIT: Or search amazon for fireplace matches. These might be a good match

I really enjoy camping. Sadly My family never went and all I did was in scouts. However, not that I'm married I'm all excited to do it more often! I have a tent, lantern, sleeping bags, and a propane cooking stove I won from MountainDew lol

Thats actually why I want these matches. THey are awesome to have!

u/pandas_mom · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Happiest this week? When they called and cancelled soccer practice for my 4 year old and it was SO COLD outside, so instead I watched netflix in the bathtub.

My favorite food varies, but it is between chicken n dumplins and rocky road ice cream :)

Also... CAMPING MATCHES!

u/agentjones · 2 pointsr/PipeTobacco

I usually use Swan Vestas to light my pipes. They're nice, long matches (over 3 inches), which makes them perfect for getting down into the bowl without burning your fingers. I get mine from my local cigar & pipe shop, but if you can't find any in your area, they appear to be available on Amazon.

u/the__rev · 2 pointsr/nostalgia

I ordered some from Amazon a few years ago.

They were only $7.99 four years ago... much higher priced now.

u/PM_ME_CANADIAN_JUGS · 1 pointr/trees

Nothin fancy, but if you want ACTUAL matches out of a matchbook and don't care too much for looks, here's a cheap box of matchbooks.

EDIT: some words

u/TitledTitan · 1 pointr/conspiracy

Its a good question, I dont know the answer to it, but I've been looking into gold and bitcoin to try spread my money around a bit more so its not fixed to one currency and have atleast half of it not in FIAT.

Again, I can only tell you what I'm doing, the easiest way to prepare is to think of a world where money cant buy you anything anymore, either becuase its worthless or you dont have any (the banks wont let you access your own money, its happened in Greece and Italy already), In a world like that what could you obtain now that will be of high value later. think of cheap goods that will be scarce or very expensive during the financial crises, stock up and be ready to trade for things you will need later, back to the barter way of thinking.

It just helps to be prepared, there is no one solution and building a bunker under your house just doesn't sit well for something that might not actually happen. split your money up and obtain trade-able goods is probably the easiest/cheapest methods of being prepared.

Edit: For example, I'd keep a few cases of these stored away, they easy to bag, and they going to be in high demand if the lights go out or electric suppliers cant afford to keep the lights on. easy to trade.

u/CaptainDiptoad · 1 pointr/cigars

For matches I use these,

https://www.amazon.com/Boxes-Swan-Vestas-Matches/dp/B00HVH1842/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1511448295&sr=8-1&keywords=swan+sulfer+free+matches

They burn for the perfect amount of time for lighting a cigar, they're fairly cheap, and their sulfur free.

u/doctechnical · 1 pointr/videos

Or you could just by strike-anywhere matches.

u/Lasivian · 1 pointr/Damnthatsinteresting
u/zombiegoasts · 1 pointr/DiWHY

A normal box of kitchen matches is around 5.75 on Amazon, (3 boxes of 300 matches) bringing the price per box of matches to 1.91.That would already dramatically cut your projected cost.

$0-$5

$5-$10

$10-$20

$20-$50

If I win, I really want it to be in the $10-$20 category, because I got that pen as a gift last christmas, loved it, then lost it at school. I miss that pen.

u/Gs1000g · 1 pointr/BBQ

This for those long matches....like These
I took mine off
https://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Long-Reach-Matches-count/dp/B0042GAMDI

u/cwcoleman · 1 pointr/camping

These from Amazon are great. I've use a few and they burn powerful

EDIT: ah, you said strike anywhere... these are not. still recommended
