I have the queen size version of this bed, but I'm sure the twin size is just as good, just smaller. It's inexpensive and very comfortable. You don't need a box spring or anything, the frame you already have will work.

If you can't afford it, then you need to prioritize your spending. You spend 1/3 of your life asleep, don't spend it sleeping on that disgusting thing.

When I was in college I bought a $125 mattress from amazon that came rolled in a box.

I used that thing for six years. Yep - even after I graduated college and had a well paying job. It served me so well.

If you want the amazon link I can track it down for you

Unfortunately it looks like they increased pricing but still cheap for a mattress

Honestly you can go on Amazon and get quality beds. I bought a memory foam queen mattress online for $300 shipped. I worked as a delivery driver for a mattress company for 2 years, and I can verify that this mattress is on par with the quality of our supposed "$2000" memory foam mattresses. Mark ups are INSANE. My boss would spend around 2k for a delivery from the manufacturer, which would contain something like 6-8 full beds (mattress, boxspring, frame). Each of these would sell for between 1k and 4k with delivery, varying only somewhat in quality. Only the really low end "discount" beds were noticeably less comfortable. The one I picked up online stands up to many of the luxury beds I've worked with, its the best mattress I've ever slept on. 10/10 would buy a bed from Amazon any day and probably from here on out.

Edit: for those who have been asking, here is a link to the one I picked up: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NH0XWNU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_gS3ZAbADH6PPE

I just finished furnishing a house and bought several mattresses and bed frames. I got an INCREDIBLY COMFY king bed and frame for less than $400 on Amazon. Here's the mattress I got.

I was really happy with the foam mattress I ordered from Amazon. Zinus and Spa Sensations are great. In fact, Amazon has a great sale right now. You only need a full-size bed now so it's even cheaper!

Everyone else covered all the other stuff well except a bed. the fuck is wrong with ya'll?

a futon? a futon mattress? air mattress??? fuck that shit

A good nights sleep is as important as eating, you don't need to spend all your money on it either.

Bed, blanket, sheets, and pillows: ~$350

note: I've had this set for a year, great buy. fuck futons.

another note: if tying to decide between a twin, full, or queen size mattress. get a queen. even if you have a tiny room you'll have a big bed. never get a king (or cal king) size mattress unless you have a permanent home, those things are a hassle to move and/or get rid of.

'nother note2: buy the sheets the same size as the bed, but buy the blanket/comforter the next size up it'll make all the difference on an extra cold night or when someone else is in bed with you.

'nother note3: don't get a used bed. you only need to encounter bedbugs once for you to consider setting your entire apartment on fire. even if that doesn't deter you just imagine sleeping on a pile of someone else's shedded skin and dried sweat.

  1. Depending on how much work you want to do you can still find homes for sale inside the city for that price. If you are looking to rent everything should be in your budget as well. Also when you say Pitt do you mean University of Pittsburgh or just Pittsburgh? Pitt is the school, PGH is the city, PIT is the airport. [its a quick way for people to clock you're new if you use those interchangeably]
There are a ton of other posts about the real estate market in town and its really a sellers market right now. We have a ton of new-build apartments that have gone up recently and are expensive for what Pittsburghers are used to paying for rent but are in-line with your budget.
  2. Amazon - seriously. Unless you want spring for some reason they have this 12in foam mattress for $190 which will be cheaper than anything you can get locally.
  3. This is a tough one because it can vary so much. I would research the type of car you want to buy, then look comparable ones up through Kelly Blue Book or AutoTrader and go from there
  4. Verizon FiOS is the best speeds per price if where you decide to live gets the service - and honestly if you were between a couple places and theyre close go with the one that gets FiOS. You can expect to pay around $100/mo for 100/100mpbs fiber. $60 will get you around 50/50mpbs. FiOS is the only provider that matches upload/download speeds.

Coming from someone who's had chronic back pain their whole adult life, and has used one of the higher end version of these - a good chair is important but not as important as a good mattress and pillow.

This is the high end "workpro" model: http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/493966/WorkPro-Commercial-Mesh-Back-Executive-Chair/

This is the one i got, on sale for $140 this weekend:
http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/448590/WorkPro-Quantum-Mesh-Mid-Back-Task/

Both are loads better than those dxracer chairs.

And this chair is not very good, I've tried the nice one and still had back issues - tried one of the "workpro" models from office depot for 140$ and i can tell you its loads better.

Going back to the mattress though, if you suffer from lower back/shoulder/neck pain - get yourself a good memory foam/gel mattress, i got one last Friday and am almost completely pain free now, i never knew how much it mattered until i slept on my sister's "sleep innovations" 12" foam mattress after moving an entire apartment of stuff up 4 flights of stairs.… i woke up with no back pain the next morning, and instantly went and bought myself one.

This is the mattress you should get if you have back issues like i did, skip the chair for now and do yourself a favor: https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Innovations-Shiloh-12-inch-Mattress/dp/B003CT37L0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1478128801&sr=8-3&keywords=sleep+innovations

I just bought my second one of these for a guest bed, and have been sleeping on the same one for 3 years now. Amazing bed, especially for the price. Has a 20 year warranty, just like Tempurpedic.

Edit: I always confuse bed and mattress; OP, are you looking for a bed frame or a mattress?

Amazon sells these mattresses that are similar to ones sold at Ikea that get shipped to you in a duffel bag and they unfold.

Here's a twin for $160. It's the #2 best selling mattress on Amazon. Here's the best selling mattress list if you're interested.

Another suggestion is to go to Target and get the Target brand air mattress. When I first moved to an apartment, all I slept on was my air mattress because I couldn't afford a bed. I've had it for 3 years with no problem. Here's the one I have. It's $46 plus you'll need a pump ($15). There are cheaper ones if you want a smaller one.

Also, I'd second someone's suggestion of buying a futon. It can function as your couch and bed. Good luck!

I’m not sure what your current financial situation is, but I wanted to share this anyway. Maybe you could quickly save up for it or make a mini GoFundMe.

My husband and I purchased this mattress when we moved to an apartment together. It’s super inexpensive but has been the best mattress either of us has slept on, ever. It’s a perfect combination of firm and soft. The prices also vary depending on what size/length you get

Opened a twin size for my daughter. She was 3 and standing relatively close and as you can guess the thing sprung out and flung her across the room. 9/10 would do it again.

Best mattress I've ever slept on.

Mattress stores are extremely expensive and will mark up the same or equivalent mattresses by 2-5 times the price just because they know people assume they cost a month's pay.

u/adognamedgoat · 14 pointsr/rva

I got my mattress off Amazon and it's one of those memory foam deals that comes all compressed. It is super firm, so if you're not into firm, you would hate it. It was under $200, though, so way worth it for me! I have not noticed any of the temperature issues other people have with memory foam.

I dunno about OP, but this is the one that I bought on Amazon.

I got this in early 2017 and I love it. It's got a 10 year limited warranty against manufacturer defects, and a 100 day trial period in which you can send it back for any reason.

I ended up buying the same mattress in a twin size for my toddler because of how much I like mine.

115 BUCKS TOTALLY WELL SPENT!

I have the full version and it is the best. I have been floor sleeping on it for 3 months and the usual back pain I deal with no longer exists. YMMV. It folds up so easy every morning and my 15 mo old sits on it to watch movies.

u/jrhs0802 · 10 pointsr/xxfitness

We had a pillow top queen (major name brand, maybe Sealy? Can't quite recall) for 5 years. When we moved, we decided to upgrade our furniture and get a king sized bed. Because we had spent $$$$$ on the down payment, other furniture, etc. we decided to try out a cheap memory foam mattress from Amazon as a "filler" piece until we could save up and comfortably afford a more expensive mattress.

You'd have to pry this mattress out of my cold, dead hands. We have no intention of giving it up/upgrading at this point, because there's nothing to upgrade. I sleep like a baby. My husband sleeps like a baby. We used to wake up with slight back pain/aches - no more. I can toss and turn all I want, and he can't feel a thing. It's been amazing.

i love my memory foam mattress, very comfortable and resilient. it was also much cheaper than the average mattress. the 2 main downsides i have come across though are that they can be a little hot. so not great in summer and if you lay in one spot to long it can be hard to move. so if your say watching a movie in bed or reading a book it can be hard to adjust your position into something that is more comfortable for sleeping. i won't lay in my bed anymore unless i know for sure i am going to sleep. other than that though the mattress is fantastic, it's very easy to fall asleep you don't get lumps in the bed, and if you have a partner movement doesn't transfer much so you don't wake them up. oh thats one last complaint, sex is a bit harder since you sink into the bed more. i would definitely recommend getting one though if your looking for a mattress. i purchased a Zinus Memory Foam 12 Inch Green Tea Mattress, Queen for 200 bucks at the start of 2016. when it was on sale. it's 279 now.

u/PirateKilt · 7 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

Exactly. We've replaced all the old mattresses we had for our 4BR house with these and couldn't be happier with them.

u/pocketasian · 7 pointsr/Frugal

Amazon.

I recently bought a queen size, memory foam mattress (2 inches of mem foam and 10 inches of reg. foam). I have amazon prime so it shipped for free in 2 days. The mattress took a day to expand out of the packaging and it had a chemical smell for a little while but I was super happy with the purchase, I didn't have to go anywhere and talk to anyone to do it, and the mattress is super comfortable. I spent $517 and it was worth it.

Edit: Our mattress is on the floor and I can't tell the difference between that and having it on some sort of platform or frame. This is the one we bought. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CT37L0/ref=oss_product

u/bobbybick · 7 pointsr/videos

Got a "burrito bed" from Amazon in 2016 for $230 + $80 for a metal frame to put it on. This was after I tried going to brick and mortar stores and saw that they wanted $700-1000 for just a mattress and the frame would be like another $200 minimum.

It's probably the best sleep I've ever gotten and plan to buy one again in the future. It was made better in that the salespeople at brick and mortar acted like I was a crazy idiot for buying a mattress online and that they "hoped I like bedbugs".

u/CitizenDeldo · 6 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

I'd recommend at least considering 'Signature Sleep': I bought one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004LQ1RKQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My reasoning was that it was so cheap compared to everything else, I was willing to take a chance on it.

I've recently realized that reviews on amazon tend to be 100% bullshit. I've bought too many products on amazon that were rated 5 stars that were just horrible. And there are so many examples of companies that take the same amazon ASIN and reassign it to a completely different product so you're actually looking at reviews for something else. And companies that combine different products on one page as "color variations" so high-value crap products can be boosted by numerous sales of low-cost but actually decent products of a totally different category.

Anyway, just don't trust amazon star ratings. They are worthless. That's my actual advice to answer your actual question. Whatever you do, remember that amazon star ratings are just ridiculous.

Lately, I've been using https://www.fakespot.com to try to verifiy what percentage of the reviews might be honest. And I tend to just not buy anything from any company that has a bad rating, and I'll tolerate a kind of bad star rating so long as it looks like the company isn't using dishonest reviews. And I feel like I've been ending up with higher quality stuff since then.

With the signaturee sleep mattress I said I bought, I see now that they have 4499 reviews on that item that amazon removed, presumably for being dishonest. So maybe don't buy from them? If I didn't have previous experience with them, I'd definitely see that number and say "no way am I buying anything from them"

But I am really happy with my mattress, and have absolutely zero complaints about it. Other people might have higher standards or different expectations than me.

I'm wondering if you did buy a mattress online and didn't like it, if you didn't want to deal with the hassle of return shipping, could you sell it on craigslist for near the original price? Tell people that you just don't like it, and maybe there is somebody else like you out there who thinks "I'd like to buy that, but I wish I could try it out in person first." And in that situation, for them, buying a days-old one from you in person would be a better value than buying a brand new one online, even at the same price.

I guess my recommendation: Take a gamble, buy online. If you don't like it, try to sell it on craigslist. If nobody on craigslist buys it from you, just return it within whatever return period the manufacturer gave you.

I was going to buy one of the more expensive branded foam mattresses, but my back went out and we needed a new bed now. We bought a cheap queen size this one on Amazon for less than $300. It's been almost 5 years and the bed is still wonderful.

My back just started acting up again, but it appears to be a pinched nerve this time. Pretty sure the bed isn't at fault.

u/StephenJR · 5 pointsr/BuyItForLife
u/totally_not_at_work · 4 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I hated. HATED. my sleep number mattress. I had an "expanded queen" which is the same as a queen size, but six inches wider, with two air bladders. the two air bladders were tiny, and provided no support for a man my size (6'5"). The mattress felt wonderful for a few months, until the outer shell broke down and the only support was the air bladder.

Two separate air bladders means no cuddling - any variation in firmness (which is inevitable) will result in an uncomfortable ridge in the middle of the bed. If you have sex in or near that ridge, you will stretch the shell, and create a gaping chasm of sorrow in the middle of the bed.

I suspect that a single bladder mattress would be acceptable, but for the price and durability (roughly 18-24 months) it is not worth it.

I currently rock one of these these, which costs 1/10th the price, and has already outlasted my sleep number in terms of comfort.

I am on month 12 with this mattress, I don't expect it to last much more than five years. At $100 a year for pillow like comfort, I am very, very happy.

u/RealNotFake · 4 pointsr/Fitness

Getting proper sleep is vital during your rest periods for you muscles to rebuild. Don't have loads of cash? Then buy one of these bad boys and be done with it. That's the mattress I sleep on and I can vouch for the ridiculously good value. Once you go memory foam you won't go back. These are basically the same exact thing as tempurpedic but super cheap.

u/nothingbutt · 4 pointsr/Frugal

You can also get them from Amazon in 12 inch and 10 inch heights. I have the 12 inch and highly recommend it -- it's $430 right now for the queen. The only issue is you really want a topper for summer if you are a warm sleeper as it really insulates you. It is great during the winter.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CT37L0/

I put it on top of an inexpensive (and maybe not frugal as not very durable in terms of finish) Ikea Malm frame:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S39849855/

And what I think is the key part -- the best support slats they have:

Having Costco deliver does sound very nice though. I had to haul mine up three flights of stairs and it was a workout.

I agree with downsizing the bed - it definitely dominates your long skinny room. We actually replaced a newish expensive posturpedic with this reasonably priced mattress and couldn't be happier. You don't need a boxspring.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CT37L0/

You can also get wallpaper to mimic that feature wall:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CT37L0/

If I were you, I'd splurge on lighting (task light for reading, mood lighting, etc) and getting a nice dock and speaker set up for your phone / music. Be sure to include artwork that is important to you, and bedding that you love.

Not related to mattresses, but do you carry your wallet in your back pocket? I did for years and had the worst sciatica for nearly 6 months. Moved the wallet, and things cleared up completely.

As for the mattress, I bought This one a year ago, and havent had any problems with it (for reference, I am 6'2" and 365 for the first 8 months -- 295 now and still going down!)

The reason they have reviews on Amazon is so you don't have to feel like you're taking that much of a chance.

You get what you pay for, and you spend a third of your life sleeping, so a bed is worth investing in.

That said, would you be willing to consider alternative styles of beds that can be put away during the day, like a rolling futon mattress or a foam pad similar to the one that the sofabed you linked uses? If you prefer a firmer bed, a futon like the one in the first link will serve you well. My SO and I sleep on the queen-size one and it works very well for us, although we both like very firm beds. It's pretty easy to roll up and move when needed.

u/themikewheaton · 3 pointsr/minimalism

You might want to consider a Japanese futon, which you can easily transport and even fold/roll up and put away during the day. J-Life seems to be a popular brand and they have a good variety of products so you can get a feel for what's available, but they sell far cheaper on Amazon and the quality difference is supposedly minimal. Here is one on Amazon for about $150 after shipping that is the size you want: Queen Size Traditional Japanese Floor Mattress. I just got the smaller size of that one and find it firm but very comfortable.

u/ZuG · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

This mattress is amazing if they ship overseas.

u/Eldanon · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

Yep, download the roadtrippers app... you can put in your destination and filter to specific things on your way. Camping/RV is one of them. Check out this mattress if you're considering this.

u/RareRibeye · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

To start things off from other threads/videos I’ve seen:

The trunk seems to fit a twin size mattress. One user recommended this. With a twin, two adults should comfortably fit. You could probably uncomfortably fit 3 people (spooning).

Camper Mode: AC drains less battery than heaters. Seat warmers also drain less battery than heaters. Overnight heating in freezing climate seems to drains ~3-4%/hr or ~2.4kw/hr according to this video, but YMMV.

Make sure to lock the vehicle via the Screen and turn off the alarm while you are sleeping in the car or your movement might cause it to beep throughout the night. Also turning off sentry mode is good if you want to conserve more battery as well. Got the above advice along with other helpful tips from this video.

we just got a guest bed mattress from Amazon. Queen size, memory foam - $250 including tax. It's not quite as good as our super-fancy mattress (that we overpaid for), but it's way better than an air bed!

We have prime, so it came in about 2 days.

I use this fold-able bed frame: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001IPVWG2/ref=twister_B001IPWV7Q?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

really great for a portability as I swapped living spaces recently, lift-able for one person, one fold to fold it up.

And then I combo it with an affordable foam mattress from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-Memory-Green-Mattress-Queen/dp/B00Q7EPPDA/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1493900674&sr=1-4&keywords=mattress&th=1

but you could find some roll-up mattress/futon like you said.

u/1up- · 3 pointsr/kansascity

I got mine off Amazon. It's memory foam so it gets shipped to you rolled up in a box. You unroll it and let it air for a day, where it gets bigger and more firm.

I had a full size in college and when I moved I got a king size. 2 years later and it's really comfortable.

Well I bought [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q7EPSHI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) around 1 and a half years ago. I love it. It's not the most expensive mattress in the world but I really like it. My ex gf always raved about it. I have it on 2 box springs side by side on a metal frame.

You take it out of the package and give it time to expand and within 10 minutes you will be like 'wow' and within 3 hours you will be like 'how the hell did that come out of that box?'.

u/overstable · 3 pointsr/columbiamo

I used Amazon and bought a 12" thick memory foam mattress. I paid $289 for the Queen size 18 months ago. They vacuum compress it for shipping so it's not terribly unwieldy to carry into the house.

u/tats-n-lats · 3 pointsr/weightroom

Yeah, memory foam pillows are just kinda like a sponge for sweat for me.

I've seen brands talk about copper or graphite foam that supposedly helps to pull heat away from the body.

Tuft & Needle

None of those specifically say latex, though I saw that the Leesa brand uses latex and people in the reviews are like "OMG ITS SO FREAKING HOT", so I dunno.

u/PartTimeVelociraptor · 3 pointsr/bloomington

Depends on your definitions of "cheap" and "decent". The price for a queen mattress can run anywhere from like $300 to $8000... so words like cheap/decent are going to be pretty relative. www.sleeplikethedead.com calls anything under $700 for a queen a low-price mattress. (Midrange is $700-1800.)

With that in mind and free delivery being important, you could consider one of the very highly rated foam mattresses from Amazon. Here's a link to Tuft & Needle's mattress -- but just scroll down to the "Compare to Similar Items Section" and you should see the specs and reviews for Sleep Innovations and Brentwood Home as well.

I'm no expert, but I feel like one of these 3 mattresses could be the most "decent" in the $500-600 range.

If you are looking cheaper (but not smaller--because of course a full/double would save you money over the queen size)... there should be options locally. We bought a spring mattress from Pate's Mattress Outlet (4500 Centennial Drive--Might be closed now?) about 6 years ago for about $350. (We did drive it home ourselves, though.)

It was good enough for us (an only moderately overweight couple), but after only about 4 years a couple springs had sprung and were poking through the top edges of the mattress--probably from us sitting on the edge of the bed.

u/Megacannon88 · 3 pointsr/malelivingspace

I bought a Tuft & Needle queen a couple months ago with a folding, metal bed frame. The mattress was only $600 and the frame about $100. It's easily the best best mattress I've ever slept on. No more sore upper back. The bed frame isn't particularly stylish though.

u/Sphexi · 3 pointsr/VictoriaBC

Yes, the one I have absolutely is. I was using a more traditional coil spring with a pillow top(?) before, we bought it at the Brick Clearance when that was still a thing on Douglas, about 12 years ago.

Whether because the springs were wearing out or just the style of mattress, I couldn't sleep on my side without my back feeling strained. This new one is easily an 8 out of 10 for firmness, I was expecting to sink into it but I don't, and even sitting on the edge it doesn't compress more than 3 or 4 inches.

u/wcalvert · 2 pointsr/houston
u/joeltrane · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Yeah, I did some research on the different densities. I was mainly trying to decide between this mattress with 4" of 4 lb density and [this one] (http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Innovations-SureTemp-Mattress-Warranty/dp/B003CT37L0/ref=pd_sbs_hg_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=10252NKCFKSG0ZTPDHYJ) listed on here last week with 2.5" of 3 lb density memory foam. I was concerned that the other one would not have enough memory foam to feel comfortable and that the 3 lb density might wear out more quickly.

One of the top reviews for this mattress was by a 200 lb woman and she seems to love it, so I'm hoping it will work out for me. I weigh about 215, by the way.

u/MoJo37C · 2 pointsr/Frugal

I own this one, and it's fantastic. It also has a 20(!) year warranty. No issues with heat...I wouldn't believe anyone who makes that claim. And I, too, am a hot sleeper, and the worst thing in the world to me is to not be able to sleep because I'm all sweaty. I have not had that problem with this mattress.

u/wtcnbrwndo4u · 2 pointsr/DIY

u/mlwarren88 · 2 pointsr/triangle

Seconding Fred's Beds, I got mine from there and it was good.

Alternatively, a friend got this mattress (http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Innovations-SureTemp-Mattress-Warranty/dp/B003CT37L0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367893010&sr=8-1&keywords=foam+mattress) from amazon and she really likes it. I think it's weird to buy a mattress before trying it, but her argument was 5 minutes of sitting on a mattress in the store vs hundreds of amazon reviews may give the amazon reviews an advantage over a quick judgement in a store. So maybe try online too?

$349.99 + free shipping with prime. Had mine since April 14, 2014

Downsides :
takes like 2 days to decompress once you get it - and i see you're in a time pinch.
You absolutely should buy a protector at the same time, and those are hard to get right ... some of my ... 'sleepovers' complain this protector is too hot - probably because it is waterproof - which might be a good add for op. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0035E63WM?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00

upsides:
pretty much everything else, comfort, price, quality, durability. Spring mattresses are good when new new (1-2 yrs) especially for husky (250lbs) young men who like to ..... jump ... on the bed, this thing is just as good since the first day my evil bitch ex girlfriend unboxed it while I was still at school. The video on the unboxing looked pretty awesome..... but i will never know if it was actually that awesome.

Cheap = free futon on Craigslist. Just take the mattress.

For a new, cheap, actual bed - Amazon

Foam you will just sink through to the wood. Futon mattresses are better but they are a bit tough. For a proper nights sleep get a coil mattress.

Inflatables are great for 1 or 2 nights. Very comfortable. Get the ones that are twice as high for maximum comfort.

u/shellibelli · 2 pointsr/TinyHouses

Maybe it isn't full sized furniture, maybe it's just a matress on the floor like this one from amazon. Although the length would be tough with angles and stuff.

u/decentmoose · 2 pointsr/cincinnati

I highly recommend against getting this one. It has only a one year warranty and by the time the warranty expired it was sinking all over the place and the floor was more comfortable.

u/PoundTownUSA · 2 pointsr/Frugal

I've had this mattress for 4 months now. I love it. Technically, it's a futon mattress, but it's still got individually wrapped springs and it's really thick. I think it's only classified as one because it lacks the wire frame. Also, when it's delivered it comes in a vacuum sealed back, all wrapped up and stuffed into a duffel bag

u/heyheymse · 2 pointsr/BabyBumps

It's so great. It's the Signature Sleep 8-inch Queen Contour Mattress, for $249.99, Amazon Prime eligible. We love our mattress so much. We get so sad when we don't get to sleep in it.

u/travinavan · 2 pointsr/vandwellers

If I were doing a 5 day build, I'd skip insulation. I was in a van this summer that I had insulated with polyiso, and when it was cold outside, it was cold inside the van, and when it was hot outside, it was super hot inside the van. I never got my electrical hooked up either, so I'd skip that too. Bought a 50,000 mAh battery bank. Never really used it. I did use a long 12v extension with a splitter to charge my phone, run a fan, etc.

I'd probably put down subfloor, that's cheapish and a one day project.

For the bed, I bought this frame for $60 and this memory foam mattress, but you could probably get a cheaper twin mattress. The nice thing about the bed frame is that you can store plenty of stuff underneath it in storage totes.

u/GordonTheGopher · 2 pointsr/Advice

Have a solid 100% latex mattress and I swear the guest bedroom twin is more comfortable. I like more firm though. You can get more firm latex but price goes up.

Here's the discounted latex info:

https://www.sleepez.com/

This is for the twin on amazon, they have different sizes. Look for certipure if you do go memory foam. (Its way different than the old tempurpedic days.)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005G02ESA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

We used this bed FJELLSE from from Ikea:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S59009824/

and these slats:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00160215/

Honestly if I had to do it over I'd buy a larger mattress on Amazon and the Ikea frame and slats. Just too comfy. The latex is dreamy but you have to trust you get the right firmness or you are stuck sleeping in a hammock like experience. That and the fact it weighs a ton. Good luck mattress shopping is fun!

I have something similar to this which is good enough for me -
https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-Memory-Green-Mattress-Queen/dp/B00Q7EPSHI/ref=sr_1_1?s=furniture&ie=UTF8&qid=1497875642&sr=1-1&keywords=zinus&th=1
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M16A1M8/ref=psdc_3248801011_t2_B01AB689F0

If you want a firmer mattress you can go with this one -
https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-Gel-Infused-Green-Memory-Mattress/dp/B01NH0QVM4/ref=sr_1_5?s=furniture&ie=UTF8&qid=1497875642&sr=1-5&keywords=zinus&th=1

There of course are also other base options you choose if you need a headboard or what not. I also would recommend a full cover as it has worked great a keeping my mattress spotless, something like this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B1ZRLLY?ref=emc_b_5_i

ikea has clean & simple beds. Easy to put together.

Amazon has affordable mattresses. i recommend this one.

Funny, i actually bought this mattress because i stayed at an Airbnb that had the mattress on the floor and it was my best night sleep in months, if not a year. Got the model & ordered in the next morning.

We got the Zinus off Amazon : https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-Memory-Green-Mattress-Queen/dp/B00Q7EPSHI/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=foam+mattress&qid=1556737035&s=gateway&sr=8-3

It was like $180 for a queen on Black Friday in 2017. At full price it's certainly cheaper than the name brand mattresses. We've only had it for 18 months so I can't say how well it holds up long term but so far it's super comfy. My wife and I both sleep on our backs/stomachs/sides and they all work. It took a while for it to stop smelling chemically but it eventually did

u/Thonyfst · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Yeah, that's what I've been leaning towards, or this cheap Zinus one. It feels wrong to spend less on a bed than I've spent on a jacket though.

EDIT: Accidentally included a referral link in there.

u/Pnk-Kitten · 2 pointsr/JUSTNOMIL

If there is pee in the foam part, I don't think you are going to get that clean. That being said, this is similar to what spouse and I use. The one we got (I'll ask for the exact one later) has lasted us 5 years thus far, and we are not dainty people. They come rolled up in a box and have to expand for a day or so. Alternatively, you can use a blow up mattress. A lot of people do that now.

Did your landlord finally do the walkthrough and you are clear for any damages in "your" room?

Check out some of the competition as the mattress industry is incredibly corrupt and there are huge margins some smaller companies are cutting.

u/rednightmare · 2 pointsr/VictoriaBC

You can buy mattresses at thrift/second-hand stores. You can also get decent foam mattresses relatively inexpensively, especially online. Here is a queen size on amazon.ca for $400 with free shipping. and a thinner one for $300.

They also show up on Used Victoria frequently.

u/The_Drizzle_Returns · 2 pointsr/madisonwi

In particular, if you watch slickdeals for about a month the 12 inch Queen Sized Zinus Mattress goes on sale quite frequently for $210. Its a great mattress and worth the money (shipped free, prime is 3 day while non-prime is about a week).

u/sweetpea122 · 2 pointsr/internetparents

I've been sleeping on a Zinus Memory Foam 12" Mattress for over a year now and it's quite comfortable. Truth be told before this I was sleeping on a very very expensive tempurpedic and I have trouble telling the difference between them.

Investing in a good nights sleep is crucial, sleeping well is very pivotal to keeping a healthy mind and mental state.

u/gusty_state · 2 pointsr/funny

I bought my memory foam mattress and bedframe for ~$400 total. I like it just as much, if not more than the $3k at half-price brand name memory foam mattress that I got with my ex from a store.

Mattress: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q7EPSHI

Frame (high enough for full storage totes underneath): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M1D27YO

u/pandaeconomics · 2 pointsr/AskWomen

Same brand, we just bought this mattress and it's great. I'm not sure what the difference really is but it's so squishy and wonderful! Hopefully it stays that way in the long-run. :)

u/RallyMech · 2 pointsr/guns

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q7EPSHI which is ~$280.
I also bought this frame: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NHWGGWE ~$200.
I would recommend both.

You could absolutely slap it on top of a home made frame. The biggest thing is to have enough support underneath to prevent sagging.

u/Gymnocalycium · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

If you're looking for good shoes, try Allen Edmonds, Red Wing, Thursday Boots, RM Williams, and /r/goodyearwelt in general. Of course, comfy tennis shoes are great too and there's a reason old people who stopped "giving a fuck" wear Reebok and New Balance.

For beds, try a lot of the new foam beds that have come out recently. TempurPedic has been overcharging people for too long. This bed will drop down to ~$350 every so often, and it's a great mattress. I also have a $1000 Loom and Leaf mattress which is basically a Tempur Pedic clone but I prefer the cheaper mattress because it's a bit firmer. Tempur Pedics are way too soft in my opinion, and they give me back problems.

One other thing this post fails to mention is exercise. It's hard to think of a better investment than 30 minutes of exercise a day.

u/humaniteer · 1 pointr/Frugal

I bought this mattress for $420, and it is BY FAR the most comfortable thing I've ever slept on. I used to have incredible back pain by the time I went to bed from work, but not anymore. I dare say, that this may just be too comfortable for a bed. I got the California King as well, turned it sideways, and now I have a bed for Me, my wife, baby, and various other animals.

u/njjc · 1 pointr/Seattle

I got this mattress and am extremely happy with it. I'd recommend a waterproof mattress cover, as sweat and other moisture can mess up the foam. I built myself a frame for about $50 in wood and screws.

u/crazyforsw · 1 pointr/orangecounty

Costco is a good option. If you want to try something new I got this memory foam off amazon and am so happy with it! (this is the other popular brand they carry). I work as a server and having this mattress helps my back a lot. Check out the reviews for memory foam on amazon and see if it's right for you. They're cheaper than the cheapest of a regular mattress and in my opinion better than any other mattress I've slept on. Highly recommended.

If you really want to go cheap though, find one on craigslist. If you end up going to a store $400-$500 for a regular mattress isn't a bad price. Might have to go to a few stores and haggle to find this price.

u/gettinitin · 1 pointr/AskReddit

u/smartlypretty · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife
u/TankSpank · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I have had this model from Amazon since February 2012. I think memory foam in general is too soon to tell if it's going to be BIFL, but it is no different than the day we bought it. We bought another one (the Lucid by LinenSpa line) last Summer for a guest bed.

They are quite firm, but in the end I think it's probably better for my back/hips. I don't think it's particularly life changing, but then I did replace the old (very expensive pillowtop) mattress because of constant hip pain which this does not cause.

If I were going to buy my own bed again, I'd splurge for a thicker mattress with a thicker layer of actual memory foam (you'll see the one I linked is 3" memory foam and 7" regular foam). But I'd still buy this type from Amazon.

u/kepton · 1 pointr/business

The price paid is not just cost of manufacture. Many other expenses go into it. But look at this foam mattress on Amazon.Com. Has over 1000 reviews at over 4.5 stars and is less than half the cost of what is available at a store:

http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Innovations-SureTemp-Mattress-Warranty/dp/B003CT37L0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1395267692&sr=8-2&keywords=foam+mattress

Ikea Hemnes bed frame with 12" Sleep Innovations memory foam mattress, a couple memory foam pillows and a couple standard fluffy pillows. Simple solid colored comforter. High thread-count sheets. Oh, and king sized, so myself and another can both go full starfish comfortably in the night.

All told I spent somewhere around 1200-1500 USD, and everything has lasted me (very comfortably) for four years. Simple, classy enough without being overpriced, insanely comfy, rave reviews from all ladies who have graced it.

u/JasonDJ · 1 pointr/Frugal

I really love the Tempur-pedic knockoff I got on Amazon. Plus, a 20-year warranty and eligible for Prime Shipping. I coupled this with an Instant Foundation and put it in a new king-size frame that I bought at a discount furniture store.

I'm quite happy with my purchase. The mattres and foundation, combined, were $775 (for a King set) when I bought it. I had the money available, but opened up an Amazon Credit Card at the time for an extra 10% off (or maybe it was $50? It was two years ago, tough to remember) and also bought Prime at the same time.

Thank you. You are kind! I will be happy to share with you some of the philosophers I have enjoyed. What I have enjoyed even more is listening to smart people critique these philosophers. They have a way of breaking down the difficult concepts in understandable ways. Go on YouTube and listen to a guy named Rick Roderick. He has 3 lecture series which introduce you to many of the most famous philosophers. I especially enjoy his critique of Nietzsche, Freud, Kierkegaard, Sartre, Habermas, and Hegel. There is a podcast called the Partially Examined Life which is full of really, really great philosophical discussions. One of my favorites is their critique of the movie "No Country For Old Men".

The bed I bought is off of Amazon, strangely, and it is awesome! I cannot recommend it will be as comfortable to you as it is to me. I am a very large framed dude and this one worked wonders for me.

It was over a year ago, im pretty sure this one is it. It's about 30 dollars more than what i paid though http://www.amazon.com/Signature-Sleep-8-Inch-Memory-Mattress/dp/B005A4ON90/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1375058548&sr=8-8&keywords=memory+foam+mattress+queen

I was rather surprised how comfortable mine is. It has certainly been better than the mattress it replaces.

FYI, one of the reasons that memory foam mattresses can be so cheap is that they ship compressed into a roll about 16 inches in diameter.

Example mattress

I'm no hostel owner but I bought the 12 inch version of this mattress back when it was well under $300 and I've had it for ~2.5 years with no issues. Two other people I know have bought the same one after trying it.

Haven't seen anybody suggest it so I will chime in and say Amazon. We have purchased our memory foam mattresses from them and couldn't be happier. This is a queen 12 inch for $300.00

Here's a 12-inch queen memory foam mattress with very positive reviews for $299, including shipping. That's $900 cheaper than your mattress, and you may have paid sales tax on yours too.

Everyone forgets Amazon for mattresses:

It makes delivery a cinch too. The memory foam mattresses can be vacuum shrunk to an incredibly small size for shipping.

Mattress from Amazon. Trust me. I would never buy a used mattress and mattress stores are in business to rip you off. I have done lots of research. This memory foam mattress from amazon is the best I have ever had. 4000+ 4.5-5 star reviews. My dad bought the 8 inch and loves it also. That one only has 6000 reviews! lol

Bought Zinus this Signature Sleep one one many years back. I'll never buy anything else. So cheap (relative) and so comfortable. Hasn't shown any signs of breaking down. Similar priced spring mattresses will wear down. I've noticed in the past my side forms a hole since I am heavier than the wife. She sort of gets sucked into it. Mattress doesn't last because of this, and they just aren't conforming like memory foam.

You can't cheap out if you go spring, and if you go memory foam the off brands are fine but just look at reviews and I would recommend the 10 or 12 inch thick versions.

edit: I was mistaken. Bought a Signature Sleep brand and a Zinus bedframe.

I've seriously never found a "normal" priced mattress that I liked.

u/ChucklesManson · 1 pointr/phoenix

I have purchased two of these mattresses a year ago, and I'm happy with them. They are medium firmness and don't smell like chemicals or anything. Amazon delivers them to your door. One of them has a foam topper on it but they are comfortable without.

Not only is memory foam hot, but the porous structure is a magnet for dust, mold spores, trapping sweat, bacteria, and if you have pets, dander and mites.

u/ScrumpleRipskin · 1 pointr/Augusta

Get them shipped from Amazon. I got this one for some family who had fallen on hard times: http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Master-6-Inch-Therapeutic-Mattress/dp/B005G02ESA/

Pretty much all of the foam mattresses on Amazon are highly rated and come shipped with all the air removed. You need to open them, let them grow back to full size and air out a little and they last forever with no issues with the sides losing structural integrity like a regular mattress if you like sitting on the edge. They also require no box spring. You can get a cheap bed frame from Amazon too for the same price as the mattress. all told you can spend $200 bucks for a full bed with frame and mattress.

They are very firm, however. Which I love and they don't wear out in the middle and form that body crater that a lot of normal mattresses do. There are options for different top materials like gel and memory foam and a few with little raised cooling towers that let air circulate under.

u/HylianSavior · 1 pointr/personalfinance

Regarding a bed, a 6-inch memory foam mattress is $106 from Amazon. It ships with all the air compressed out of it, so you just need to unroll it and let it puff back into shape.

Yes, it takes a little while but it gets there. There was no smell to mine, though some people claim there was with theirs. Ive been pretty happy with it, for 150 bucks i don't think it can be beat. I've had it about 10 months so far and it's still comfortable. I went for this particular mattress because it offered the most firm foam for the money and I prefer a firmer mattress. The prices on these things bounce around all the time, so check camelcamelcamel before buying. I paid $130 for a queen, but the same mattress is now $210. u/Countenance · 1 pointr/AugustBumpers2017

Depending on the issue, sometimes there are cheap fixes. We've placed plywood sheets directly under our mattress if it had too much "give". We've also just given up on the mattress concept before and gotten much cheaper shikibuton-style pads directly on a floor or plywood sheet over the slats that took some initial getting used to but felt much better than a bad mattress after the initial adjustment.

u/leofseige · 1 pointr/malelivingspace

I'm in small room myself, trying to make the best use of space.

Consider a Japanese futon. I've been using one for the last five months and I love it. It is...maximally firm. Personally I like the "primal sleeping" aspect, and it helps a bit with my sciatica.

I'm using: https://www.amazon.com/Rolling-Bed-JFM-36080-Black-60inch-Mattresses/dp/B009EEMH3Q

Lately I've been considering a bit more padding.. possibly going with a legit tatami mat, otherwise a firm 1" foam pad.

The futon folds up quickly and fits in the closet. Plenty of room for a narrow bench sofa to use during the day.

u/KariChop · 1 pointr/Frugal

This is it.

There are more reviews on the smaller one here.

u/MsSadieDunham · 1 pointr/minimalism

I've done something similar with this (twin folding mattress): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DJ8HWBU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
What I suggest is getting a more narrow mattress, so you can keep more of your things in the same place (instead of on top of the mattress). You could also get by with only moving one of the seats forward (with something narrow). This particular one is a bit long, but you can jam it in there. You'll definitely want to look at blacking out the windows as well (maybe use black posterboard.

It can get a bit annoying moving everything around daily converting from camper to car, so smaller stuff is probably better.

Ya, on one hand I can see that, but people are unlikely to specifically seek out some Chinese made cheap $4 widget to order directly from an unknown manufacturer who might consider selling directly to consumers, but I'd imagine larger purchases like a mattress from reputable, recognized companies, people would not be as hesitant. Seems like it's bound to go that direction as more people are buying things like this for these type of prices relative to storebought mattresses: https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-Memory-Green-Mattress-Queen/dp/B00Q7EPSHI/ref=zg_bs_3732981_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=WPH1AKGRVPDVEQ7R1V7Z

How many people are going to be going to mattress firm to spend 3-5x the price when awareness catches up? The big mattress makers are surely going to have to adjust over time as they lose sales to people buying direct and I'd imagine a lot of these mattress stores will too.

u/Aggie05 · 1 pointr/houston

I got this mattress for my guest bedroom. It is the first foam mattress I have bought and I was impressed. It's actually on the firm side, which I did not expect.

u/phylogenik · 1 pointr/rational

How do more expensive mattresses like this compare to e.g. sub-$200 mattresses that you'd get from companies like Zinus (even sub-$100, depending on the sale)? All my mattresses have been in that price range and last me many years no problem, and we put them through a lot of use (as a bigger, married guy). They seem as comfy if not often much comfier than e.g. mattresses you find in fancy hotels or airbnbs, but I've never consistently slept on $500+ mattresses like the ones you linked (but Casper in particular annoys me, since for a time it seemingly advertised on a bunch of podcasts I listen to).

(of course, there are mattresses that cost several thousands of dollars which may or may not be substantially different from those mentioned)

For 8ish days I'd also just consider getting a blowup, much easier to get rid of/donate afterwards, or keep for occasional guests. Though as a software dev maybe those temporary costs and inconveniences become pretty trivial.

FTFY:

Zinus 12" Queen Green Tea mattress, middle sagging after 6-8 months (did I get a bad mattress?)

Hello all. I suffer from a chronic sleep issue for over 10 years and also fibromyalgia like body pain and pressure points. Last December after finally being sick of the Sleep Number C2 queen I've had for a number of years, I extensively researched online and bought a Zinus 12" Green Tea Mattress, Queen (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q7EPSHI). At first, I had no complaints and it. However, within 6 months I definitely noticed that it's not kept it's firmness in the center middle and quickly sags in when I lay down for awhile.

I'm the exact opposite of what you'd call a heavy set person (Male 36, 5'11' and 74.8 kilograms) and am using the base of the old C2. If I move to the sides I can feel the firmness/support of what it originally was. I've even tried readded the 3" thick-4 pound foam topper I had bought for the Sleep Number (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004AR5X92) to see if that would fix it, but it only pronounces it more.

I've been just dealing with it for the past few months but it's only getting worse I have to believe this isn't normal. I want to start a warranty claim with Zinus but I just cringe at having to go through all of this.

I'm just wondering, was I just unlucky and get a bad pick of a mattress? Had anyone else experienced this? Any and all comments & suggestions would be appreciated!

Mattress prices are insane. Luckily, there are lots of new companies that cut out all the middle men and ship directly to your door. You can get a high quality memory foam mattress for 600 brand new: http://www.amazon.com/Tuft-Needle-TN23Q-Mattress-Queen/dp/B00QBZ265U

I got Tuft & Needle. No problems with heat or sex. I had a small issue (my fault) where I nicked the outside cover while unpacking it. I made a suggestion to them in their survey and they refunded me an unsolicited $100. Great service.

The bed starts off a bit firm but settles. Not in the way a bed says with springs, just got more comfortable. A year later and I still love it. No issues at all. Get a good waterproof cover (that doesn't make noise) for any new mattress, especially foam. You don't want any spills (or other fluids) soaking into foam.

You can get overnight delivery on a Tuft & Needle mattress from Amazon, we're happy with ours.

After purchasing this mattress, I'll never own another brand. For a few hundred dollars as long as I get a year out of it MINIMUM it pays for itself compared to the $3,000 in store mattresses. (You can get the non gel infused for $250 compared to $400 but be aware it may be a bit warmer)

Just bought this and this after two different friends recommended it. Maybe you could fit it into your budget? We actually had the same plan (wait until we buy a house in two years) but life is too short to sleep in an uncomfortable/too small bed.

I recommend not even going to any of those places. I bought a queen-sized memory foam mattress on Amazon a year or two ago for about $300 shipped. Here's a link to the best reviewed mattress on Amazon. You can narrow it down from there.

Edit: Here's the bed I bought.

I just got a queen Zinus "Green Tea" memory foam bed. Currently $289 shipped on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q7EPSHI/

It is pretty firm. I actually ordered a 3" gel topper because of the firmness (you sleep on top rather than sinking into it), but that proved to be too squishy (the topper leaves an imprint of your body when you roll). I have a 2" topper on another bed & imo that is the right level of squish vs. firmness: (the bed is firm to the point where my side wasn't sinking in & was kind of being compressed instead, like when you lay on thin carpet when watching TV or something)

Also, I picked up their awesome 18" tall frame:

https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-SmartBase-Foundation-Replacement-Noise-Free/dp/B017YETH8K/

TONS of storage space underneath, easy to setup (2 pieces that screw together & fold in half, lightweight & only requires one person to assemble...literally takes more time to unbox it than put it together), no noise in use, plus with the 12" Zinus bed, it's at a good height to walk up to & fall into bed. You will need a grip sheet underneath, otherwise the bed will slide off pretty easily:

https://www.amazon.com/TRU-Lite-Bedding-Slip-Mattress/dp/B01AS3HADS

I also recommend getting a waterproof sheet (goes underneath the regular sheets), as any spills will sink directly into the foam mattress & never, ever come out:

I got these Mellanni sheets - they are thin, but feel nice:

Slightly better than the Amazon Basics sheets I have on another bed. I have a plastic bin underneath the bed for storing a spare set of sheets & waterproof sheet (both are washer/dryer-safe). Total comes up to under $600 shipped for a 12" memory foam bed, 2" gel topper, 18" metal bed frame, a non-skid pad for the frame, two sets of sheets, and two waterproof mattress sheets. I was going to get a Casper or Leesa, but those were like $800 just for the bed...I got all that for $200 less, still a pretty hefty investment, but a decent deal. Other than that, you just need some pillows & a duvet or blanket on the top.

The mattress comes vacuum-sealed in a box, so you just undo it from the packaging & let it air out for a day or two to fully decompress. The frame comes in a large but thin box (two frames folded in half with some assembly hardware). I didn't have to mooch a truck off a friend or go to a mattress store or anything...ordered it all off Amazon Prime, showed up in a couple days, put it all together by myself in minutes. Easy peasy. Would definitely order another one!

You should work a little more, buy the mattress we just bought for our guest room on Amazon for $150, and pay off your student loans with that money.
