this guy has the right idea. but when replacing everything you should highly consider upgrading the components.

hopefully your ipod is a 5th or 5.5 generation ipod classic video.
this is the best ipod classic model to upgrade into a higher capacity ipod (128gb, 250gb, 500gb)

then buy these parts on amazon...

the first item is a 128gb & 256gb mini SD card. this will give you the best/fastest performance possible for the size/price. booting from a flash card will be much noticeably faster than your ipod.

the next item is an SDXC to CF adapter, which will allow you to connect the 128gb SD card onto your 1.8 ZIF.

the third item is the CF to 1.8 ZIF adapter for iPod.

the last item are the tools needed to do everything.

connect it all together and you got yourself a super fuckin cool ipod.

check out amazon and ebay for new cases, faces, whatever. you can even get the aftermarket U2 ipod covers and install them.
ipod motherboard.

cheers.

EDIT: last item is actually a higher capacity battery + tools.

I personally experienced a huge amount of satisfaction when I repaired my laser printer after 15 years of perfect performance, rather than discarding it and buying a new one. I did it to avoid seeing it go into a landfill (or even recycled), but didn't expect the psychological benefit. Now I try to repair lots of things. It doesn't always work out so well, but it's amazing how often it does, and a shame people don't default to at least making a minor attempt.

After this, I was motivated to resurrect my dead 1st gen Nano with an $8 battery replacement kit, my first official soldering job... and a similar sense of total satisfaction.

Purchased as a parts Zune but ended up getting it working with a battery replacement. It looked like the last person had opened it and gave up when they saw the bulging battery was soldered in with 4 wires, but it wasn't bad at all! Dropped in an SSD and now it's ready for the long haul, love this suave little guy. It has some wear and tear but it's growing on me because I'm not worried about keeping it in immaculate condition.

How many first-generation Zunes do you think got purchased? How many people are still using them? And yet, here's a replacement battery...

edit: Even better: Here's a battery for a cellphone that hasn't been produced in over 15 years:

You need a rechargeable battery that fits the slot. Here's one potential replacement : https://www.amazon.com/Portable-1-528-231-11-Wm-rx707-Wm-fx675-WM-GX674/dp/B0047ZZX60

Considering that at best they are 16y/o battery, they are all dead even "brand new"/"unopened" one..

Haven't found a clean way to open they. I fear that opening them would be a destructive action.

The best would be to make a new shell using 3d printing that use the same type of battery ("gumstick" one: https://www.amazon.com/Gumstick-1400-mAh-NiMH-Battery/dp/B003F9UWTM )

Nice man. I still have two discmans. You can get the batteries for those discmans. They are relatively cheap, about $10.

I still will pop a CD in and listen to stuff, even though I have a Sony WM1Z. It's just that the experience with a CD is some how better.
