I'm 40/F and I just did an 80-ish day fast. Vitamins/minerals/electrolytes only for the first 20 days, and then just enough dietary fat to stave off the hunger pangs (about 200 calories twice a day).

The Minnesota Starvation Experiment revealed that there's a rate limit to how quickly body fat can be converted to calories, and it's a function of how many pounds of body fat you still have. So if you've been on a total fast and suddenly get blindsided by an all-consuming hunger pang that won't go away, that may be your problem. Both carbs and protein raise your insulin, which inhibits fat-burning, so you'll still want to keep your calories during the social events to a minimum, even if they're keto calories. It won't be difficult; your stomach will probably be the size of a marble. LOL.

The sex difference may be a difference in the muscle tone of the heart, since elevated adrenaline after day 5 makes your heart work harder, so if you're not in the best cardiovascular shape, you'll feel fatigued all the time, similar to heat exhaustion, until your heart adapts. I started feeling amazing on day 20 or so, just before I had to start supplementing dietary fat.

Guys... Stop blaming our periods for everything! LOL. I had three totally normal periods during the fast. Zero changes in my menstrual cycle the whole time.

Do you take a magnesium supplement? Did you change it recently? Some forms of magnesium are straight up laxatives. That was my problem for the first few months, and once I changed my electrolyte supplement it all went away.

I switched to one to two of these pills a day depending on if its a workout day or not, and it really helped me.

Sports Salt

Good luck!

You could tilt your head very far back and make sure the water doesn’t stream down your back. I have long hair so maybe that helps in directing the water away from my body, but many shampoos, conditioners, and body products can break my body out BADLY.

On that note, also experiment with different conditioners/shampoos that may actually be triggering it or making it a lot worse. Look up fungal acne ingredients and comedogenic ratings on ingredients in your shampoo/conditioner. Your body wash could be worsening it as well. I have had luck with [Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic Wash], although it does have glycolic acid so your skin may purge slightly at first for a bit.

Topical aloe vera can be helpful as it is anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial, and also contains some natural salicylic acid that exfoliates inside the pore, even at a neutral ph.

Aromatica makes a good formulation that is 95% aloe vera, and does not appear to contain any fungal acne triggers or comedogenic ingredients. Some people are sensitive to aloe vera though, or other plant extracts so YMMV. Other formulations definitely have acne triggers in their formulas, so if you go this route be thorough in cross-referencing ingredients.

You can get chemical peels done on your back and shoulders, but those are better in winter when your skin won’t be exposed to the sun. I get TCA peels for $50 at a plastic surgeon’s medical spa side of the office. Salicylic acid peels could help as well.

As far as supplements: Lactoferrin specifically the Aptolactoferrin form because it binds to iron, robbing bacteria and yeast of it, accordingly inhibiting biofilm formation, growth, and also acts as an immunomodulator on human cells. Some people have luck with Zinc. There have also been studies that particular strains of probiotics that can have a positive effect on acne, and immune and inflammatory response.
Selenium, also N-Acetyl-Cysteine NAC assist in glutathione production and reducing inflammation systemically.

Responding with the cosmetic aspect of it first because if something topically is the root of what is triggering or worsening the acne, supplements can be a steep uphill battle over what possibly could be just a mild one, if any at all.

When I workout fasted in the morning I do three things to prepare myself for and to get myself through the workout.

  • 1-2 cups of Black Coffee
  • 1 cup for cardio, 2 cups for lifting
  • Salt Supplement
  • Lots of Water
  • 0.75 - 1 liter / workout

Then, depending on the type of workout I will either fast until at least 1 PM or eat shortly afterwards.

You might want to switch to magnesium glycinate. My husband and I both take this one with no issues.

My problems with the guy are: 1) His prices of supplements are insane. 2) He isn't a real doctor 3) He says stuff with no sources of proof. Like caffeine he said will kick you out of ketosis. Wrong, it can boost your production of ketones by 150%.

I just discovered these and they work! Pure Planet Sports Salts 1000 mg 90 Veggie Caps https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DA543JK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_54lKBbZVF24SE

u/klxisf · 5 pointsr/fasting

Try these supplements: https://www.amazon.com/Pure-Planet-Sports-Salts-Veggie/dp/B01DA543JK

I use these whenever I do a longer fast and haven't had any issue, if you're looking for a pill (I also don't like snake juice/ketoade).

You shouldn't take the tablets you got because of the possible insulin spike (not ideal for a fast). Each pill is one gram of carbs, so technically you won't get kicked out of ketosis (you gotta have more than 20g to do that) but it isn't the best supplement for your electrolytes.

u need the big 4 electrolytes but u also need supplements to these

I have crazy Restless Legs - mine don't feel like I have to move them, they just jerk around all on their own. My mom's, brother's and son's do the same thing. Anti-depressants make things worse. Clonazapan helps, but the thing that stops it cold is this Bio-CMP stuff. Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium. I take one or two before bed (or when ever the jerks start) and I can sleep, and so can my SO! It's all natural, no side effects, no weird stuff I can't pronounce - just minerals. It's just a Miracle Cure of the Future for me and my family. (No, I don't get a kick back.)

Take salt tabs or ketone salts before training. I always do and it helps a ton.

Minerals!

My father and I use the above brand—he’s even seen color return to his graying beard!

Zinc is an important mineral that many people are deficient in. Plus, minerals aid in your digestion, so those other good vitamins you take can be more efficacious. Magnesium also plays an integral role in mental health—look it up!

u/Nightmareish · 2 pointsr/zerocarb

Oh good point. I occasionally take sports salts before a heavy workout. Should I supplement electrolytes in this way going forward, you think?

u/26LT · 2 pointsr/adderall

I'm pretty sure, although the one I use and would recommend is this one.

u/dimscum · 2 pointsr/proED

I second the lemon flavor ultima packets! Although I usually need to double up on them to meet my goals, esp since I do pretty heavy workouts.

I also recommend taking capsules throughout the day, which are not only super convenient but also great for when you get tired of having a sickly sweet artificial taste in your mouth all the time 😅 anytime I feel a headache coming I just pop one of these and it goes away!!

Sodium is important, but equally important are potassium and magnesium. I use https://www.amazon.com/Electrolyte-Replacement-Rehydration-Magnesium-Potassium/dp/B074N7KTJK/ref=sr_1_5_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1526319660&sr=8-5&keywords=electrolyte+tablets.

But really, if you're doing 100%, Keto Chow will most likely provide you with everything you need. If you don't feel like it is (such as low energy, "keto flu", being tired all the time), that's when you can tell you need more electrolytes.

u/VectorPotential · 1 pointr/NASCAR

Salt tabs will help there if you just need water and electrolytes without any carbs. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074N7KTJK/ I run & bike long distance and use these to supplement gels to make sure I'm maintaining my electrolytes while pounding the water.

for fish oil this is my all time favorite

for D3 and K2 i just use the NOW brand usually

you could stick with 2000iu but if you spend most your time indoors you are probably better off bumping it up

Answer me this then: if every labeling of magnesium xyz is elemental magnesium, according to you and the government, then why are the following supplements SPECIFICALLY labeled elemental magnesium (instead of just saying magnesium xyz):

https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Absorption-Magnesium-Glycinate/dp/B000BD0RT0/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1522246054&sr=8-4&keywords=elemental+magnesium

https://www.amazon.com/Pure-Magnesium-Citrate-Capsules-Supplement/dp/B01LYWPNY6/ref=sr_1_9_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1522246153&sr=8-9&keywords=elemental+magnesium

https://www.amazon.com/Nutrigold-Magnesium-Gold-Elemental-Full-Spectrum/dp/B018X2CFZY/ref=sr_1_16_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1522246153&sr=8-16&keywords=elemental+magnesium

Think about it: if you have one supplement that says 100 mg magnesium xyz, and another that says 100 mg elemental magnesium (from 2000 mg magnesium xyz), and both pills are roughly the same size, does that add up? It doesn't to me. And here's another thing: I didn't start having the vivid dreams and waking up refreshed until I started taking the magnesium laxative at 1 fl oz. 1 fl oz is 1,745 mg of magnesium cirate, with 282 of it being elemental magnesium. When I was taking it in tablet form, I was taking 400 mg of magnesium citrate, but I never experienced any differences in my dreams or felt more refreshed waking up.

Since I haven't heard from you, I thought I'd drop some info on you. By the way, I don't mean to be pushy, but I have some experience here and had to research my way out of a lot of it. Also, I hate seeing people suffer when they might not have to.

Anyway, when I had gut issues, I was swinging between constipation and the runs. I was always hungry and only felt good for the first hour after a meal. After that, I was drowsy, lethargic and irritable. Consequently, I ate too much just to get through the day. I got testing for food intolerances/allergies. I had through-the-roof antibodies present for eggs, milk and almonds. It wasn't causing a face-swelling, throat-closing reaction - that would be an allergy, which is life-threatening. But my immune system was reacting enough to cause the symptoms.

Of course, I cut those foods out immediately, which helped, but it wasn't enough. That was when my doctor started calling around for help. What he came up with was a product called Inflammacore. It's a powder you mix with water that has a bunch of soothing and anti-inflammatory food and plant products. It also has a good amount of caffeic acid phenethyl ester, which is a pretty expensive ingredient. (look it up, it's interesting) In my own research, I found out about pre/probiotics. Long story short, probiotics are microorganisms that colonize the gut and regulate the processes down there. Prebiotics are food for the probiotics, because they have to make it through the stomach and small intestine, which takes a few hours. The food helps keep the organisms alive on their perilous journey.

For me, after about a week of taking 1 scoop of the powder with pre/probiotics in the morning and another scoop by itself at night, my appetite decreased and my moods stabilized somewhat. I did this for 3 months and got better and better. I still had to go on antidepressants later, but it was a big difference.

When you say you have recurrent diarrhea, it sounds to me like your guts are inflamed and angry about something, whether it's stress, or a bug, or some food that doesn't agree with you. I would guess that if you tackle that first, you might get a leg up on the depression. Did you know that 80% of your serotonin is produced in the gut? That's not some new age bullshit, you can look it up.

I'm not going to act like I know the first thing about narcolepsy, it's completely outside my experience. I was tired all the time, but I'm sure there's a difference.

So, not to sound like an advertisement, but here is the Inflammacore (not cheap, but check the reviews - orange is the best, the other two are chalky tasting) and here are the probiotics, which I started by taking every day. Now I just take them twice a week. I am not affiliated with these companies, but they should pay me as I've recommended these products to several people over the last couple years.

u/dg313 · 1 pointr/ketodrunk

I just visited my sister in Colorado, so I was battling elevation plus keto-cheap-drunkeness. I drank a buttload of water, and took electrolyte supplements (LyteCaps - Perfect Balance of Electrolytes for Serious Rehydration - 30 Servings, 60 Vegetarian Capsules (With Magnesium, Potassium, Zinc) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B8NDJR8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_AuZLAbY8SKXNS). We went to breweries or beer bars every day. I didn't have any bad hangovers, but my tolerance seems lower. I've been eating keto for just over a month.

I told ya, I don't go in depth with those things. I just find the cheapest because my financial status is kinda bad atm.

Either way, a recipe can be changed to your taste. Find what works for you. Experiment with dosages and different noots to find what works for you, because everyone's brain chemistry is different. What may work for me, may not work for you. That's the point with biohacking: experimenting. Isn't it ?
