He needs, yes. The Lee Challenger kit is around $99 on Amazon, and that has everything he'll need to get started except for: Bullets, Primers, Powder and Brass and DIES for 7.62x54r (another $30-$40)

Now, he'll want a digital scale, a case trimmer, and a tumbler to get his brass clean and pretty. That all can be added on, and most likely, be purchased in addition to the press kit for about $200.

Here's a list of things he'll want:

Lee Challenger Reloading Kit

Hornady Reloading Manual (So he doesn’t blow himself up)

Calipers (So he doesn’t blow his gun up)

7.62x54r Reloading Dies

Frankford Arsenal Quick-n-EZ Case Tumbler (To make clean-shiny brass)

Case Tumbling Media

RCBS Universal Case Loading Block

Hornady One-Shot Case Lube

Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack (Because listening to good music scientifically makes better bullets)

So the preorder I placed in Februrary finally came through to deliver this absolute beauty to me today.

This vinyl set is amazing, both the records themselves and its packaging, and it instantly became the holy grail of my collection.

The set comes with five(!) red records, containing the entirety of the Fellowship of the Ring Soundtrack. Also included is a booklet with information on the recording of every single track, and what looks like a third of a poster of Middle Earth, foreshadowing a future release of the remaining two Soundtracks.

Here's the Amazon link if you want to check it out.

  1. I’ve seen them 24 times from Coast to Coast (in the US at least) and have never paid anywhere close to $200 for a ticket. Including a show at a small NY Opera house on the 10K Days mini-tour where I was greeted by a tux-wearing usher and had to check my coat at the door.

  2. Radiohead and Beyoncé (among others) - 2 of the biggest names in music whether we want to admit it or not - have both dropped brand new albums with NO prior warning, marketing or announcement of any kind. Tool announced the release date months in advance and even told fans in advance that new music was going to be played on the tour that just completed.

  3. Here is Lateralus Vinyl for under $30:

    Undertow Vinyl for $25:

    Opiate Vinyl for $9:

  4. The setlist from this most recent tour contained 11-13 songs depending on if it was a festival gig or not.

Of those 11-13 songs - TWO were brand new tracks, ONE was a brand new drum solo, and THREE others (Intolerance, Sweat, and Part of Me) have been extremely rare cuts over the last decade (or more).

So going into the most recent tour, chances were 100% that out of the 11-13 songs they were going to play, you were going to get no less than 3 new songs you’d never heard before (period) and almost 100% that you’d get a 4th song you’d at least never heard live before.

  5. Now get off your f’ing soapbox. We need the f’ing space to nail the next fool poster.

Maybe Yes, Maybe No (LINK)

by Dan Barker

In today's media-flooded world, there is no way to control all of the information, claims, and enticements that reach young people. The best thing to do is arm them with the sword of critical thinking.

Maybe Yes, Maybe No is a charming introduction to self-confidence and self-reliance. The book's ten-year-old heroine, Andrea, is always asking questions because she knows "you should prove the truth of a strange story before you believe it."

"Check it out. Repeat the experiment. Try to prove it wrong. It has to make sense." writes Barker, as he assures young readers that they are fully capable of figuring out what to believe, and of knowing when there just isn't enough information to decide. "You can do it your own way. If you are a good skeptic you will know how to think for yourself."

Is there a difference in sound between the 3LP and the 4LP currently available that makes the former more desirable? Or is it simply an issue of wanting an original pressing? I know the 2012 remaster had some bad quality issue, but from what I can tell most of that was fixed in 2014

I am not sure that I entirely agree with this article. While a lot of art has been inspired by religious experience in the past, I would counter that a lot of art in the last century has been inspired by empirical experience. Art itself has become a kind of empirical experiment to find the connection between stimulus and experience. Sometimes god is still the subject of a work of art, but that isn't true anymore for the vast majority of work.

EDIT: Also, this is pretty good.

u/Nigel_P_Winters · 7 pointsr/secretsanta

>What is a good groove bpm?

There isn't a single reasonable tempo (40-220, maybe) where you can't groove. It takes good note placement to groove, and you can have good note placement at any tempo.

Second, you would be doing yourself a huge favor by looking up Scott's Bass Lessons and watching his videos on groove, as well as Victor Wooten's Groove Workshop.

Third, you won't be able to create any type of groove if you don't have good timing or if you don't know how to play different note values.

u/slime73 · 6 pointsr/TheLastAirbender

The show's music is amazing! But so much of it is locked away by Nickelodeon. :(

Fortunately the composer has posted several of the scores to his SoundCloud, and LoK Book 1's soundtrack is on iTunes and Amazon.

Here's the ending theme, which made my cry the first dozen times I listened to it: , he was also on a podcast and deconstructed the song:

And several others are here (including the music from the final scenes of Korra books 2 and 3):

He also posted the music from Iroh's speech at the end of A:TLA:

And several other A:TLA pieces of his are here (if you can get it to play properly):

I'd HIGHLY... HIGHLY... HIGHLY recommend watching Victor Wooten's groove workshop. It completely revolutionized my perspective as a bass guitarist and allowed me to more freely express my musicianship away from being self-conscious about notes. Plus you can listen to some epic Wooten snippets along the way.

You'll likely be convinced by the end of it that although notes are important to a degree, as a bassist keeping the GROOVE is Priority A. And groove isn't limited to 12 notes.

u/NorswegianFrog · 2 pointsr/Bass

Pretty sure it's been used once or twice by Victor Wooten and/or Anthony Wellington.

Possibly in this video, almost for sure in this book.

u/klaviersonic · 2 pointsr/musictheory

This is an interesting question, and I think illustrates a certain bias in the thought process of music educators in the west more than anything. Far from being unquantifiable, rhythm and melody have been studied very deliberately in India, Africa, and the Middle-East, in the much the same manner as we study harmony so intensively. Indian music in particular, is very precise in its quantifying of tala (rhythmic cycles/time) and raga (melodic patterns and modes), with hundreds of specific varieties of each, and a complex system for deriving meaning from them. In some ways this is the major differentiator in musical thinking between east/west, harmonic thinking tends to demand so much attention that it steals the focus from other more immediate elements of musical form.

I'm not sure if this provides much of an answer to your question. In practical terms, you need to study harmony to understand what's been happening in western music over the past 300 years or so. Harmony is not the entirety of music or your training as a musician, just an important element of it that requires a lot of knowledge and practice.

This is an enlightening guide to developing other areas of your musicianship aside from harmony:

Check out this clip:

u/science_diction · 2 pointsr/Bass

Playing bass without a drummer is kind of pointless. Bass is part of the rythym section after all. Try to practice and play with people as much as you can. You don't want to be one of those musicians who is great by themselves but can't play at all in a group.

Get a drum machine or drum machine app with some loops and jam along learning to improvise.

Look up scales on the net or just figure them out yourself by playing along to music. It's not that hard, tbh. If it sounds off key, you're a half step off.

I can't recommend this DVD enough: Victor Wooten: Groove Workshop.

Buy it, watch it, live it.

Chords: Honestly, learn to play guitar if you don't know already. They are the same. Bass typically only uses diads and traids anyway, or you can pick up a 8, 10, or 12 string if you want that sound. But, I came from guitar so I'm sure some will disagree with me.

u/aprilight · 2 pointsr/Bass

One thing that helped me get over that fear was this video right here:

You can surely download it. Victor's explanation how you're never more than one fret away from the "right" note really let me be more lenient with myself and keep playing through mistakes.

u/Octavarium_ · 2 pointsr/Learnmusic

That is very much like Victor Wooten's approach to soloing and improv. I would recommend both his book and DVD

u/ChuckEye · 2 pointsr/Guitar

Nope. I've looked for that clip on YouTube, but it's not there. I bought the DVD, because there's a lot of great lessons on it (and not just for bass players, for general musicianship, it's a must-have).

u/cuombajj · 2 pointsr/Music

Right now it's cheaper on amazon than it is in iTunes.

u/tdsfp · 2 pointsr/Music

I'm really tired of this argument over piracy and lack of physical album sales. Here's why: it doesn't distinguish between a worthwhile purchase and some mass produced cheap CDs in a terrible little case.

It isn't that I don't want to not buy music, it's that I don't want to pay for bad art.

If you stick a crappy, generic, gaudy, burned-DVD on a store shelf in a clear jewel case with jotted, chicken-scratch words that read "Beatles Discography (2009 Remaster)," I am not going to pay money for it. It could be identical in every single way to the box set in terms of quality and quantity. The music would be the same, but I would never, ever buy the DVD. Because it's worthless. Because it's junk.

So here's my point. We don't buy CDs anymore because most CDs are not worth owning. They don't enhance the music, they don't look particularly nice, and they're extremely overpriced. They're not a viable product.

And now, because we have options that make more sense as consumers, we're obviously using them. When I can get online and download an album for free, in 5 minutes, in the same exact quality as I'd get from a CD, why would I honestly want to do anything else?

I can find more albums in higher quality and faster download speeds off of damn near any bittorrent site than I can with iTunes, and the better option is also free.

We have all been raised as consumers, by consumers, in a product-driven world. How else are we supposed to react when given such options? The very forces that brought record labels and physical music sales to power is now bringing them down, and the fall is inevitable.

Until we are presented with a real product that is worth the price tag, we will continue to choose the best option for ourselves. I have absolutely no sympathy for artists that don't create art.

u/bytesmythe · 2 pointsr/atheism

No one has mentioned Dawkin's The Magic of Reality, yet?

Oh! One more thing.... They Might Be Giants has put out three awesome kids albums! When my daughter was little, we listened to "Here Come the ABC's" so many freaking times, and we never got sick of it! They have super cute DVD's to accompany them too.

Anyway, the reason why I bring this up, is because they have an album for kids and toddlers called "Here Comes The Science!". It's all about elements, planets, experiments, gases, photosynthesis, and more. It's one of my favorite things ever.

Here's a link to it on Amazon, but honestly, you should just look it up on Youtube. Then you can decide if you want to get to the DVD or not, or if you just want to keep listening to it on Youtube. It's SO cool. :)

u/dkmdlb · 2 pointsr/homeschool

Science lover here. It seems to me that teaching the method of science is probably more important than teaching the facts. Understanding the method of science would allow one to rediscover all the facts. To that end, at our house we spend most of our science time focused on the method, and that doesn't require much of a curriculum. We came up with a simple little phrase that defines the method at its simplest and most basic

  • observation

  • hypothesis

  • experiment

  • analysis

Observation is at the front because you have to notice things before you can figure out why the things are that way. Observation naturally leads to the next step. As an example, the other day I noticed that our faucet didn't seem to deliver water as vigorously as it used to. So we got together, observed the stream, and talked about various hypotheses. We decided to test one - that there was a blockage in the trap at the very tip of the faucet. So we did an experiment on our hypothesis. We took the little plastic filter/trap thingy out and dropped it in vinegar, and let it sit. After several minutes, we replaced it and did our analysis by turning on the water. It turned out our experiment confirmed that our hypothesis was correct and explained our observations. The water ran much better.

Focusing on the method allows the learners to really come to understand the strengths and limits of science. And once you start making an effort to notice that, you will see that you are doing small science experiments daily just as part of your life.

As for a scientific curriculum, I can't really help too much, other than to recommend the album Here Comes Science by They Might Be Giants, and Kerbal Space Program for teaching realistic rocket science and orbital mechanics in an unbelievably fun way.
u/damonish · 2 pointsr/Physics

I highly recommend Here Comes Science by They Might Be Giants. My kids love it, and my son always says he's going to be a paleontologist, after the song. There are also videos for all of the songs, if you can find them. It's a great album.

u/DrunkHouseWife · 2 pointsr/atheism

My kids (4 and 5 yrs old) love these videos! You can watch them on YouTube if you want to check them out before you buy. It's a fun way to help them understand complicated things like how our cardiovascular system works or what elements are. There are fun songs about planets and dinosaurs... We love them all. We have them on our iPod too, for long car rides.

Ok so about 2 months ago I saw Demon Days pop up on Amazon UK. I bought it. For some reason once purchased it said the delivery date wasn't until May 15th, nearly two months away. I recalled reading on here about there being a lot of bootlegs of this guy around so I figured for €25 it wasn't a massive risk.

Anyway, it finally arrived today. Here is an album I've made of detailed images of the album. I've played it through and it seems to be all there. No locked grooves on Side C. No quietness of the songs. What's interesting if the disc seems to also be in packaging so its not second hand.

I wasn't delighted with how it was wrapped for shipping, it was just put in an old food box and sellotaped. But it seems to work, not be warped. Wondering if anyone can ID whether it's legit or whether I got ripped off. Regardless I think I'm gonna keep it cause it still sounds pretty good.

Again sorry for annoying this sub with yet another Demon Days post I just can't quite see my one fitting the particulars of other posts of reissues/bootlegs.

Edit: This was the page where I bought it

u/Kinetic_Static · 1 pointr/musictheory

So to a beginner bassist I would recommend two different study materials.

First buy this DVD, Groove Workshop. It's basically a lecture with exercises on the different components of music as it relates to the bass. One of the largest take-aways is that the notes you play are WAY less important than how you play them. They don't have the clip on youtube, but here is him doing something similar live. On the DVD it's just incredibly well done. He lists all the notes in a G major scale, then only plays the "wrong notes" (notes not in the scale) as Wellington lays down a chordal pattern in G. He then switches to playing in G major and the moment he does this, the G major sounds terrible. When he was playing out of key it was aesthetically pleasing, but when he switches to in key he changes how he's playing and it sounds more discordant.

Second, buy this book on building walking basslines. It's a great introduction to walking bass lines. The point here isn't to remember the notes, but rather the patterns and the feel of "walking".

But for more immediate tips do this. Play the root on the kick, the 5th on the snare, and embellish with the octave and 7th in time with the drummer's fills. You can move up to the 5th by hitting the 4th and down from the 7th with stops along the way at the 6th and the 3rd. If you really want to outline the chords play the root 3rd 5th, but be warned this sounds tired very fast.

The above is just my opinion and is provided merely as a quick outline to start getting the feel of moving around a chord.

Several good suggestions already on resources. A few more that I find helpful:

u/Wild_Blue_Skies · 1 pointr/Guitar

Hell yeah. There is a reason why a lot of metal guitarists also get into jazz (eg, Marty Friedman).

Here are my recommendations:

The Advancing Guitarist

You'll need to learn how to read musical notation for this, but it's worth it.

Victor Wooten: Groove Workshop

It's a bass video and it's not even about technique, in particular. But it's filled with incredibly insightful advice for musicians of any kind. Highly recommended.

The top review of the Beatles Mono Box Set on Amazon gives an excellent rundown/review of each album in stereo vs. mono.

Link TL;DR: "Your core, oddly enough, should be the mono box set. Augment this with the stereo Hard Day's Night, The Beatles For Sale, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, The Beatles, Abbey Road, Let It Be and stereo Past Masters."

u/DarthPlagiarist · 1 pointr/audiophile

This guy is right. Pick up this if you want to hear the Beatles properly:

Edit - that's also why some of the Beatles stereo mixes have wild use of stereo where things will swing wildly from one side to the other for no apparent reason - it was the studio engineers more or less just playing around without the artists.

u/PonderingPotato · 1 pointr/beatles

I get that entirely. Last time I checked, the mono box set on US Amazon was $100 for CD alone, and even worse for vinyl collectors. I haven't even seen one copy of the mono CD's anywhere, and I've even drove around my area looking.

That said, it definitely seems like the 2017 master of Pepper is looking like an actually perfect remix. If they restore the mono She's Leaving Home pitch and fix some minor effects the stereo screwed up from the original like the absence of some Reprise crowd SFX, Good Morning transition, etc, it might be my favorite version of the album.

u/Magoo909 · 1 pointr/beatles

If you're gonna do that, I'd just shell out the extra $38 to make sure you're getting a legit copy.

The Walk of Shame

Lila awoke with a snort, suddenly aware of her strange surroundings. The boy on the bed next to her was turned away, his brown tousled hair and the comforter worked in tandem to obscure his face. His breath was deep and even; she knew he wouldn’t be awake anytime soon.

“What did he say his name was? Adam? Alan? Something like that,” Lila wondered. She turned and started to survey the room.

“Boys,” she thought. There was no clock in sight, but the bluish light filtering through the cheap blinds told her it was before six. The room was disorganized, messy even, but not dirty. Random stacks of DVDs lay here and there. A poster of “The Beers of the World” was tacked to the wall.

She spotted her bra amongst the school books and clothes strewn on the floor and worked to silently extricate herself from under the covers. As she moved, the throbbing in her temples was amplified, as if she could actually hear the blood pulsing through her veins.

She tip toed across the floor, gathering her clothes in the crook of her arm. Her shoes were near the desk, next to a small stack of Disney movies. Cars and The Emperor’s New Groove caught her eye. They were two of her little brother’s favorite movies. “Boys,” she thought again, before quietly creeping toward the door.

Lila startled and instinctively drew her foot high. Partially obscured by a rumpled t-shirt, the broken c.d. case lay in the carpet at her feet. She picked it up and turned it over. “They Might Be Giants,” she glanced at the boy, thinking, “What an enigma you are.” As if in response, the boy stirred briefly and Lila froze in her spot, holding her breath before carefully letting it go. When she heard his breathing regulate again, she shoved the c.d. in her purse and slid silently out the door.

Lila quickly dressed in the kitchen, and combed her fingers through her hair, using the microwave door as a mirror. She opened the refrigerator and grabbed a carton of orange juice. She opened it, smelled it, and took several long gulps, before putting it back. Running her hands down her body to smooth her wrinkled clothes, she glanced one more time at her reflection, before stepping outside into the crisp fall morning.

You can get it from here or here. In one of the past threads someone confirmed with an Amazon representative that the package sold on Amazon was the same one as the one linked by the Random Access Memories website.

Not sure if it's been posted, but the French site for Amazon has a pre-order with 14 tracks.

Granted, some of the track titles are different, but I feel like Amazon would have their shit in order.

Buy the Legend of Korra OST, and the TLA OST might finally get released.

Haven't the soundtracks for previous books already been released? I've seen tracks on YouTube, e.g. this playlist.

Edit: Also for sale on Amazon.

They don't put the music up for sale but I think either book 1 or 2 they made a soundtrack..

(I watched until 33:00 and could not find a match to this song so keep listening.)

You can also buy the soundtrack here.

I'm fairly certain that if you order off you get free shipping on orders $25 and up. Which means you can get it here for about 40 bucks total

[According to this link the untitled tracks are called Guilt Trip and Send It Up.](

Say what?! I'm located in Germany and just found the Amazon pre-order page for the physical copy. Now I have questions:

  1. Why does it come as 2 CDs if it only has 7 tracks?

  2. I sure as shit hope this isn't the final price. 100 fucking €? Yes, I've waited 13 long years for this album, but I'm not paying that kind of money for a CD. Just to be clear: 100 € is 112 $. In the US the CD is currently only 45 $.
