That is not the same grip. That looks like a third party grip.
The left one looks like this third party grip

My grip with the joy-con gripes.

Jokes aside, you can buy the official grips direct from Nintendo's website. These are the same ones in the switch box and have the logo on them:
https://store.nintendo.com/ng3/us/po/browse/productDetailColorSizePicker.jsp?categoryNav=true&navAction=jump&navCount=0&atg.multisite.remap=false&productId=prod840605&categoryId=cat831381

Otherwise, there are of course the 3rd party licensed ones that look almost like the original grip; they're opaque but don't have the logo, use plastic rails, and the grip is slightly different:

https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Joy-Con-Comfort-Grip-Black/dp/B01MS7YUA7/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1496598616&sr=8-3&keywords=switch%2Bgrip&th=1

The JoyCon Comfort Grip licensed by Nintendo might be what you're looking for. It has a textured grip and a more ergonomic design, so I much prefer it to the standard grip.

Edit: Here is an Amazon link to the grip I'm talking about.

u/gamerfather · 10 pointsr/nintendo

Are you going to lay it flat on a table in front of you? There's no stand to keep it upright. You'll be hunched over the screen just so you can see.

I mean, you do you, but if ergonomics are the issue, you're much better off buying an asymmetrical grip.

u/Galen640 · 10 pointsr/Switch

First of all: Screen Protector. Once it's on you never notice it, doesn't hurt to get that extra safety!

I've bought 10 games so far, and I'd say get all of these because I have enjoyed them. BOTW, Splatoon 2, Sonic Mania, Rayman Legends, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 (assuming you like DBZ,) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Pokken Tournament DX, Street Fighter 2 Ultra, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and Yooka Laylee.

If I had to pick 3 for you to get to start out then I would pick Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I think that's enough variety to keep you busy for awhile.

A carrying is always a good thing, I'd recommend This case because it's the one I use and does its job.

Accessory wise I have joycon grips which are AMAZING when playing with one joycon.

Also, the grip it comes with is trash. Get the Power A Grip it feels A LOT better in your hands.

As for SD Cards, it depends. I have a 32GB SD card. I mainly buy physical games, The extra space is for screenshots and videos, and download only games, like Sonic Mania, Yooka Laylee, etc. If you're going for digital only then get a 256GB. Sure you won't use a ton of space now, but you might a few years down the line. Also, do NOT get the official Nintendo ones. They are a RIP-OFF! Here are some nice alternatives that will get the job done for A LOT cheaper: 32 GB 64 GB 128 GB and finally 256 GB

If you have any other questions feel free to ask OP, and other (potential) switch owners!

Quick edit: sorry that some links won't be put with the text, no idea what the issue is

u/tomster2300 · 10 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I am a paraplegic and get the exact same pain with handhelds. Grips have been a lifesaver! I tried skull & co.'s kickstarter grip and a cheap rubber one off Amazon before sticking with Satisfye's Switch grip. I have big hands and it was the only one large enough to comfortably play with. Edit: They JUST launched all new products but I have their OG Switch grip.

I have other branded grips for my N3DS XL and Vita, but forget what they are (I think they're Japanese brands I found on Amazon), and they're comfortable and work great.

I suggest buying a handful off Amazon to try out and then keep the one that works. They're all made slightly differently so you wont really know until you have them in your "grip" :-) .

Good luck!

Edit: I found the exact grips in my Amazon purchase history (all from Amazon and I live in the states).

Mine is coming tomorrow, perhaps I'll make a video of me using it.

u/MutatedSpleen · 9 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

You might also want to grab one of these. It's not really necessary, exactly, but might help prevent fights, haha. This is a comfort grip. Basically a piece of plastic that you connect two joy-cons to such that it looks more like a typical video game controller. You'll get one with your Switch, but if you end up getting another set of joy-cons, you might run into a situation where Kid 1 has a grip and Kid 2 doesn't, and Kid 2 is mad about it. It's not really a necessary thing, but might make for a smoother experience all around.

u/ElectricTrombone · 8 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Same with me. I tried several different grips and not many of them helped except for this one. It actually works pretty great. It changes the angle of the right side so your thumb lays across the joystick more comfortably.

A Switch Pro controller is $70, Xbox controllers are normally $60 and require batteries or a $25 Play n Charge kit. The battery life on PS4 controllers is not great in my experience and the cord is like 3 feet long.

Nintendo controllers have great battery life, an NFC reader for amiibo, and motion controls. The $80 price tag for joy cons seems high, but it's essentially 2 separate controllers with a lot of stuff in them.

The $30 grip is not the same as what comes in the console, it also charges the controllers. The one that comes with the console is like $7

I complained about Switch accessory pricing when I first saw it too, but it's really not that bad.

u/TheLawlessMan · 5 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Have you looked? There have been some grips on Amazon US for a while. $14(?) for non-charing grips.

And this this cheaper grip.

u/MatNomis · 5 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

It's not too bad. If, as a player, you have a pair of joycons, it's almost as good as any other controller. The only drawback is that joycons don't feel as sturdy as many other controllers. So either you are paranoid about treating your kit well, and you play a bit "gingerly", which impacts your enjoyment...or maybe you're a kid or a someone unconcerned with treating the controller well, in which case you probably go to town with it and have a good old time. Thus, the unconcerned player will enjoy themselves more. However, if the joycons truly are more fragile, playing with them like this will accelerate their demise.

If you have a full joycon (twin analog sticks), you are playing with a full controller experience. Left stick does character movement, right buttons do attacks and provide extra jump buttons, and (importantly!) the right analog stick is aliased to other stuff--defaulting to smash attacks (which are otherwise a little abusive on your hardware to pull off with the left stick + a-button). This means: the traditional smash control is "quick-push of the left stick 100% in a cardinal direction + a-button; release a-button to stop charging-up and perform the attack", whereas with the right stick, you can just push the right stick in the desired direction, and when you release it, you'll perform the attack. You don't need to push it quickly, nor do you need to push a button in conjunction with it. Thus, you can do it more easily with less abuse on the controller.

If you are using single joycons per player, you don't get the right analog stick, so you have to truly "smash" all your smash attacks, by rapidly smashing the left stick in a direction and hitting the a-button with good timing. However, if you're playing casually, it's fine. Comfort becomes the biggest issue. You can get some cheap plastic molds to fit around the joycons like these, which helps a lot. Fastsnail is another "brand" who makes these molds, but I like these MoKo ones better, as I think their little shoulder-button nubs that press the shoulder buttons on the joycon don't press inwards too far (I think the fastsnail ones press inwards too far, I'm worried they might damage the shoulder buttons on the joy-con, though nobody has complained of any such thing in the reviews, so I am probably just paranoid). In any case, the products are nearly identical.

u/leenponyd42 · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

It's definitely function over aesthetics with the Pro Controller. They don't look like much, but they are extremely sturdy. If it really bothers you/your kids you can get canvas stickers made for the Pro Controller to decorate them. Just be aware that using the controller will probably cause the designs to fade where the hand holds the controller. Then you either slap a new one over it, or remove the old one and put a new one down. Probably going to be a sticky residue once brought up, however, so it's not likely something you can change you mind on after application.

The Pro controller doesn't fit the hand as well as a Dual Shock 4--Ps4 controller--but it's far more comfortable than using the JoyCons on their "comfort grip" apparatus.

It is a bit pricey, but I personally stay away from third party controllers because of generally poor experiences in the past. I find the money you save isn't really worth potential problems with an off brand controller.

u/zeththedarkmage · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

There's a third party that made plain plastic ones: https://www.amazon.com/PowerA-Joy-Comfort-Grip-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B01MS7YUA7?th=1

They're not branded, but they are cheaper. They're also pretty expensive for being pieces of plastic, which is why I just ended up buying a charging grip myself. Cheaper ones will probably come pouring out of China soon enough.

Another vote for the Switch here, primarily because of the exclusives. Nintendo makes a lot of kid-friendly games that you'll only see on Switch, like Mario, Yoshi, Kirby, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, etc.

Nintendo's online service:

  • Is $20/year
  • Gives you cloud saves for most games, so that if anything happens to the Switch, you can still access your save data.
  • Will let you play online for select titles, but requires you to download an app on your phone if you want to voice chat with others.
  • Gives you access to classic NES + SNES games. I imagine most would be challenging for a kid who didn't grow up playing them, but there's an option to "rewind" if you make a mistake or lose a life, and you can do this as many times as you need to. If she's interested in classic games at all, there are some real gems in there. Kirby's Adventure is a pretty easy one that still plays great, I highly recommend it.

As far as online goes, people can be really mean. This sub has endless examples of women who have been mocked, harrased, and even threatened. For that reason, I would be cautious about online play, or at least avoid chat.

That being said, some games have neat features that require online. For example, Animal Crossing (a game where you build your own town), allows you and your friends to visit each other's towns. As long as online play is limited to real-life friends and kid-friendly games, she should be okay. Nintendo is obsessed with family-friendliness and parental controls -- this page on their website is dedicated to parents and keeping kids safe in gaming, if you'd like to have a read.

To save some money, I would suggest getting the Switch and just one game, with an accesory or two. Or, you can keep the accessories in mind for future birthdays and holidays. Some ideas:

  • 1 year online subscription: again, this is useful for online, cloud saves, and access to classic titles, if you feel these things are right for her.

  • A micro SD card: The Switch only has 32 GB of storage space. If you buy digital games, that will get used up quickly. A 128 GB micro SD card costs about $25 CAD, and can be inserted into your Switch so that you can fit mores games on it.

  • A Joy Con Grip: if she likes playing with a controller, this is a great and affordable option for about $20 CAD. Alternatively, this guy makes great quality, officially licensed, wired controllers (and many other Switch accessories) at very affordable prices.

  • A case: so that if she ever plays it in handheld or wants to take it to a friend's house, she has somewhere safe to store it.

  • An Amiibo: These cute little figurines can connect to the Switch, allowing you to unlock things like outfits, power-ups, and other neat extras in the game. This explains how they work in more detail.

    I hope this helps! :)

No lie, these things are amazing. I forget I'm playing on a tiny joycon and not a full-size controller!

u/MapleA · 2 pointsr/Splatoon_2

I agree with you BUT!! I would not recommend the pro controller in OPs configuration. Meaning if you’re in his situation just play handheld. The reason is because when you hold the switch the screen is closer to your face and you feel less like your hunching over a small screen. Pro controller is great on a TV. Not when you use the switch in stand mode. The ideal way for OP to play mobile is if he has a satisfye grip. If you like having neck problems then go ahead play with a pro controller in portable mode.

u/Makegooduseof · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

https://www.amazon.com/Grip-Nintendo-Switch-Comfortable-Ergonomic/dp/B07VVZ98PG

Something exists at least, but it’s obviously too soon to tell whether that particular product is quality or not.

u/TemptedTemplar · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Id go the joycon pair and another plastic or charging grip. Just so they both have the same kind of controllers. And it would set them up for four player games that can use single joycons as a controller.

The grip is not required to use the joycons, but if they are used to holding normal game controllers, the grip would be more comfortable.

The Plastic one is identical to the one that comes with the system. While the charging grip has a USB-C port and USB-C cable that allows you to charge the joycons while not attached to the sides of the system.

u/buffalopete · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Some things to consider.

The costs: A second set of joy-cons runs 70 bucks or so, additionally you're correct a Joy-Con Grip should be purchased to seat the controllers - probably another 10 dollars or so. There are joy con grips with a port for a charging cable, that will charge the joy cons those are 25 bucks. I have one, but I never use the charger, rather I swap the extra joy-cons onto the switch while it's charging.
A pro controller runs around $60.
Ultimately, 80 bucks for joy-cons vs. 60 for the pro-controller.

The quality of the controller:
The pro controller is nicer, no question. But it can't split into two allowing two people to use it.

What your kids will want/what will save you headaches:
My vote is to get another set of joy cons to ensure they're both playing with the same type of controller and not fighting over it. They're likely at an age where they won't feel the need for the "best" controller so much as they'd want the ability to play with more friends.

u/EarthwormZim33 · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I've had this tempered glass screen protector for 2 years and haven't had to replace it. Super easy to install, and comes with 2 in case you mess up/one breaks. Also, only $8 (USD)

As for a case, if you have bigger hands or find handheld a little uncomfortable, I would recommend the Satisfye grip with the carrying case that's designed to fit the switch with the grip attached. It is a tad pricey though.

Here’s my loadout:

First, I like being able to play in tabletop mode as I like having the joycons removed and separated while I play on the go, I carry the straps (though I removed the strap part so it’s just a way to add extra width to the joycons) and this tablet stand because I do like the normal one.

Next up, I use a portable USB-C charger with a PD port on it. I used to use a third party Switch charger since I’m not using it to dock, but I like having the option to charge my phone as well.

Finally, I use a case to carry everything in. The normal slim ones definitely aren’t enough, so I use one like this that fits everything so I can have everything on the go in a compact space.

TLDR: I keep a tablet stand, joycon straps, and a portable charger in a large case for when I’m on the go with my Switch. None of these are must haves, but I enjoy them all.

P.S.
One ESSENTIAL accessory is a screen protector. I got a small scratch on my bezel from my dock and it still bugs me I didn’t get a screen protector immediately. It baffles me that there’d be a design flaw like that, but it happens.

Finally, a lot of people like the Satisfye grips. While I’ve never found them necessary, a lot of people have. It would also be worth getting the bundle with the carrying case since it wouldn’t fit in a normal one.

Hope this helps or gives you some ideas of what you might want.

Yes, people are having issues when it is docked. This is because the basic dock is just a plastic piece that holds the joy-cons in a controller style.

https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Joy-Con-Comfort-Grip-Black/dp/B01MS7YUA7/ref=pd_sbs_63_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=W6583VVZMYG313HK4J3J&th=1

It does not modify the sync it has to the console. If you are holding this setup such that your fingers cover the emitter (top) then you can still have interrupts. If you use the pro controller the broadcast is stronger and is less likely to be interrupted.

u/nermal543 · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

You mean the joy-con comfort grips? Right here on Amazon.ca. Just so you're aware, the red doesn't match up well with the neon red joy-cons, if that's why you want the red.

u/clanton · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Well I'd say your best bet would be cutting the bottom of the grip with a Stanley knife. Saves buying another grip and should be pretty easy, it's just soft plastic. Otherwise I've heard good things about this Satisfye grip - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07FNJJG5V/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_vGMRDbG23WWCE and it doesn't seem to obstruct the USB C port at all.

u/RruinerR · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

The old model battery is 2.5hrs-6.5hrs, depending on game and other factors.
The new model is 4.5hrs - 9hrs, again, depending on game and other factors.

The newer model also has a brighter handheld screen.
And, as much as you say you PLAN on being docked most of the time, you will find times and excuses to undock and take it along. (I never realized how much I wanted Fire Emblem 3 Houses with me when I had the tires put on the car...)

With that being said, a 200GB microSD for sure. Best price per GB and 200GB is quite a lot of games loaded.

I also suggest a grip for handheld with a case that fits the grip.
Again, i know you dont plan on being portable, but the Grip is GREAT when you are playing handheld, and a case is required for portable. And you'll want a case that fits it.
I suggest this one Switch GoPlay

These are also good, a bit more expensive.

The joycon grips come with the console as well as with spare joycons.

The console comes with (at least for me): switch itself (i.e. the screen part), a pair of joycons, a pair of joycon grips, a joycon comfort grip so you can turn them into one controller, the plastic dock, a hdmi cable, and finally a usb-c AC wall adapter (which can be used either directly into the switch to charge it or as part of the dock which also charges the switch)

I have this which is sadly the best case to actually put on your switch in my opinion. The single piece hard shell case you'd need to remove the entire thing if you want to just remove 1 joycon. The TPU cases seem a bit too finicky to get on from some reviews.

I might give this grip and case a try. Apparently the grip is larger than the stock one so it should fit better in my hands. The case seems like it should fit joycons so it seems like it's what OP's looking for. The licensed one from Nintendo is hot ***. Doesn't fit anything but the switch, games, and cables which is what I get from my $2 generic case.

I'm considering buying another grip that is a little smaller and comes with a case that will fit with the grip.

If you're worried about him ripping the joycons off with his Hulk-strength maybe you'd be interested in the grip attachment made by Satisfye.

Personally I've found it makes it much more comfortable to hold playing handheld and, in your cousin's case, it would probably greatly help in acting as a brace since he'd be holding the grip which also runs across the back of the console as well and not just the joycons themselves. You'd have to try pretty hard to accidentally break that thing.

Bonus: the satisfye case and grip were designed around this exact battery pack.

Looks like they sell it on Amazon now

u/Palidino · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Don't both these companies have versions already out for the OG switch? I have the skull and co case lol.

Sec let me look

Skull&Co

Satisfye

There's even more compact options like this that make a huge difference too (I have this one as well). Grips stick out past the switch but they're smaller. It's kinda like the skull&co with the smallest grips attached but a little less bulky.

u/pretenderist · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Or even cheaper from a third-party brand

u/dinoeyes · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I would recommend this as well, seems like the best option out there for this purpose.

Satisfye grip and case

And every review says "Great for little hands" or "small", haha. Though I appreciate the link.

I guess I didn't realize you could play with motion controls with the pro controller, so I guess that could be an option. Can you play motion controls with the comfort grip, ala: https://www.amazon.com/PowerA-Joy-Comfort-Grips-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B01MS7YUA7/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1549558299&sr=8-2&keywords=switch+joy+con+comfort+grip ?

I guess it's not much different than the Pro Controller.

u/Forbidden76 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Yes I guess it supports it now. When I posted this nobody knew and I got flamed by some Reddit ignorant degenerates if you read above. They said the joy cons are not capable of pointing like a light gun and called me a idiot for asking but whose the fing idiots now?

Check these out. Best bet is to get the Xbox 360 killshot guns though for Cabelas Dangerous Hunts games. Those are closest to Big Buck Hunter and the guns have pump action!

I saw this on amazon, it looks like what you're looking for: this is the link!

But the title of the product is soooooo bad.

Here is a link to a grip that has a few different styles.

u/JoshuaJSlone · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Single Joy-Con ones seem pretty universally called grips, too. A strap I would take to indicate the string section, which some of these grips have and others don't.

u/TheSingingBrakeman · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Checking on Bestbuy, I found both the charging grip (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/nintendo-joy-con-charging-grip/5730706.p?skuId=5730706) which'll charge your joycons as you or your friend play, and an off-brand version for a very reasonable price (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/powera-comfort-grip-for-nintendo-joy-con-controllers-black/5729901.p?skuId=5729901).

The charging grip is also available on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Joy-Con-Charging-Grip/dp/B01N33MFPK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1497755536&sr=8-3&keywords=joycon+grip), as is the non-charging off-brand grip (https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Joy-Con-Comfort-Grip-Black/dp/B01MS7YUA7/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1497755536&sr=8-4&keywords=joycon+grip).

It's pretty weird that you can't buy a standalone Nintendo-brand non-charging grip, isn't it?

u/anavn · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I have dismotricity so I know your pain. I am only able to play it using the Satisfye grip (https://www.amazon.com/Satisfye-Ultimate-Comfortable-Ergonomic-Accessories-Thumbsticks/dp/B07FNJJG5V/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 )and even then I still do feel as if the game was no made for gamers with disabilities. I hope you will be able to enjoy it too and good luck !

For anyone who wants to hold one joycon more comfortably I use this on SMP and it works great!

>It is. Which is why i dont agree with people bitching about how "slow" the switches hardware is. If the games on it are good (which they are), why the fuck does it matter?

Dead Cells is a fine example of why it matters.

It's a great game if you have even the most remote interest in Metroidvanias. It runs like shit on the Switch. The crappy framerates of the game significantly impact the gameplay in a game where careful timing and reflexes are required.

>I have a 3ds. While yes, they have good games, most of them are clerly designed to be purely portable games. Not to mention the fact that with my large hands, i find holding the 3ds for longer than 10 minuets at a time to be very uncomfortable. Which is why the switch is better. Not only is it more comfortable in hand held, not only can i have multiple controller options, but i can dock it and play it on my TV as well.

They make grip cases for both the Switch and the 3DS that significantly improve their feel. My hands hurt holding either of them outside their cases. For the Switch, I recommend the Satisfye grip although the Skull and Co Gripcase is a close second. For the 3ds, I personally use the Monster Hunter Cross that I've modded with a rubberized grip. This is a pretty expensive option, however, so there are cheaper ones for people who don't want to invest that much.

>Exactly. And my PC does PC things and is a superior gaming machine to my Switch. But most games that i can play on one or the other, most time, i prefer the switch. I have emulators on my phone as well. But id still rather have those games on the switch because its a better platform for gaming than a Phone is.

I disagree. I use a cheap little xbox controller phone clip to hold my phone when I game. The controller connects bluetooth and provides a generally superior experience to gaming with my Switch. My phone has better audio, a better screen, and a more powerful processor. It also has free cloud saves and can connect to the internet without wifi (anbd has a superior wifi antennae).

>Ill take the taller screen, but even that said.. your arguing over .2" as if its a huge deal. Its not.

No, it's not. The OLED vs LED is though.

These are pretty close (because it’s detachable from the grips)

Though the portability of these is nice

Or the battery packs are decent

Canadian here. You can order from Amazon.com.

I plan to order one for myself on Black Friday :) However, I've heard that it's meant for people with larger than average hands, so def not for your son.

For a cheap controller, I'd recommend getting the 8bitdo wireless adapter. That way, you can use your PS4 controller!

u/mrstoehr · 1 pointr/Switch

I highly recommend the Satisfye grip when used handheld. Fully supports the joy cons to prevent bending/flexing, and makes it so much more comfortable. This plus a glass screen protector is my setup. A silicone case wouldn't fit with it due to fitting very tightly on the bare switch, but the satisfye seems to be a pretty good case as far as protection goes on its own. Most importantly, the rigidity it adds.

u/VoldemortsHorcrux · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

You can play two player just fine with two joycons on Mario bros. I bought these $10 grips and it makes playing with a joycon a lot nicer on any game

u/betacux · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Would definitely recommend a pro controller, so much more comfortable than joy-con. I got joy-con comfort silicone grip things that go on the joy-con, but even then my hands absolutely kill me from playing Switch. If you just want to play as soon as you can, I guess get silicone comfort grips for your joy-con, and a comfort grip controller. Also definitely get a glass screen protector, and this case.. For games, I'd recommend BotW, Splatoon 2, and Odyssey (I assume by the time you have enough saved up odyssey will be out, it comes out in a month)

u/alerosas2 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I don't think there are bigger ones, but you could get some sort of grip to help you with the cramps, there are some silicon or hard plastic shells out there, i have the silicon ones that came in the switch starter kit

If you’re going to be playing a lot in handheld, I recommend getting a grip case. These are generally considered the best two available.

I use the satisfy grip, while my wife uses the skull & co grip because it better suited to smaller hands. Either one is solid, and your hands will thank you.

No problem with the original grip, then I bought this official red grip off amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NBVACKX/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

So much better. Haven't used the pro controller yet.

You could buy this third party one if you don't want to mess up your original. I kinda wish I had done that first but I was impatient ha.

No, the standard non-pack in grip is larger and rubberized. And also made by powerA but branded Nintendo too.

Oh, you mean like this?

u/Further_Beyond · 0 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Not entirely transparent.... but, I use;

  • Satisfye Grip
  • J&TOP DIY Replacement Dock

This combo gives you everything you’re looking for minus complete transparency. The Satisfye Grip has a bar running through the back that will probably partially cover your stickers.

The grip can be docked on the replacement dock tho so you never have to take it off. I love it.

Pro Controller vs. Extra Joycons vs. Extra Joycons with Satisfye Mini Joycon Grip

Haven't bought a Switch yet but when I do, cost will be a factor. However, ergonomics will be prioritized over cost in the event that the best controller setup for me means I end up buying one less game right out the gate. I should mention that I'm going to buy the Satisfye Elite Bundle right away for undocked play. I honestly have no idea if I'll ever play the thing docked or enough to warrant any of the following options, which of course complicates matters. I don't think I'll ever crowd around the thing undocked with three other people but at least one other person, sure. I'm getting Mario Kart as one of my first games and if nothing else, that title will definitely see undocked multiplayer use. For the sake of argument, let's just assume that I will rarely play with the Switch docked but I still would like to have some flexibility for multiplayer use. I've done a lot of research on third-party solutions and I'm not entertaining anything other than what I've listed here. I don't like how some controllers are wired and therefor only work in docked mode or use batteries. Many controllers have attractive prices but only so-so reviews and lack the full functionality that you would get with either joycons or a pro controller. In fact, I can't find a single controller that can do everything that the joycons or pro controller can.

I'm looking at three distinct options and can't decide on which is best. Here they are:

Pro Controller
+

Best single-player option, full functionality

Most ergonomic docked option

Best two-player solution (other player uses standard joycon grip)

-

Would still need at least one more controller for four-player action

Not very portable

Might rarely or even never play docked

Extra Joycons

+

Per player cost is the most efficient

Enables four players

Supreme portability

Hard to say if playing docked will ever occur, or enough to justify other options

-

No good, ergonomic controllers for docked mode (if I ever even play docked, that is)

Keeping them charged becomes a minor annoyance

Worst option for two-player setups

Extra joycons w/ Satisfye Joycon grip

+

Enables four players -OR- Two players with grips (one ergonomic, one not)

Offers most flexibility for play styles

-

Most expensive option

Keeping them charged becomes a minor annoyance

Grip is not very portable, but more portable than the pro controller

Might rarely or even never play docked

Thanks in advance for any feedback you might have, I really appreciate it. For the record, I'm getting Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate as well as $60 e-shop credit for the eventual release of Animal Crossing. I also plan on playing Paladins and Warframe as well as subscribing to the online service.
