Are we at a point where we can actually see the difference on Home TVs? I plan on purchasing this tv soon (hoping price will drop around Thanksgiving) and I'm curious if I will actually see much difference between regular blu-ray.

**For those downvoting I'm asking a legitimate question.

u/EcksTeaSea · 10 pointsr/hometheater

So yeah, I'm sure my placement is trash and everything is overkill for my tiny apartment, but it sounds amazing and I couldn't be happier.

u/staticjacket · 9 pointsr/Libertarian

I would consider those TV's more specialties and outliers. This is closer to modern top of the line, in a practical sense.

u/Clukos · 8 pointsr/nvidia

Yeah but it also costs 7 times as much as a Ps4 Pro. For the same amount of money you can get a Ps4 Pro and a nice 4k OLED TV.

Edit: The laptop costs $2699

Ps4 Pro ($399): https://www.amazon.com/Sony-PlayStation-4-Pro-1TB/dp/B01LOP8EZC/

How are you buying the TV from Engadget?

LG's site correctly labels it as G-Sync compatible. And you can buy it from there

https://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-OLED55C9PUA-oled-4k-tv

Amazon also lists it as G-Sync compatible

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07PTN79PG

So the TV manufacturer lists it correctly, the software developer lists it correctly, and the largest retail store lists it correctly.

Seems like consumers aren't being mislead.

u/vergingalactic · 7 pointsr/hfr

Yes. There are more than a couple 4k TVs that are capable of running at 1080p120 either natively or with some tweaking. I'm not sure of many that support >1080p and >60Hz simultaneously.

Blurbusters has a useful post on the subject.

http://www.blurbusters.com/overclock/120hz-pc-to-tv/

They also have some forums with people posting about their successful overclocks over here.

http://www.blurbusters.com/overclock/120hz-pc-to-tv/

This site is useful for finding the input lag of TVs but only lists the display refresh rate rather than the actual refresh rate the TV will accept from an input.

https://displaylag.com/display-database/

This site is extremely useful at confirming that a given TV supports true 120Hz:

http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/by-usage/pc-monitor

Here's a decent TV with very little input lag:

http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/sj8500

There are some cool OLEDs that support 1080p 120Hz like this one. I would absolutely recommend OLED if you can afford it.

Am I missing something? The B7A is $1496.99 on amazon right now, new not refurbished.

Edit: just saw those are Canadian prices. Just bought the B7 myself!

u/Nvidiuh · 5 pointsr/hardware

Especially since you have to dump anywhere between $1,300 and $5,000 on one of these things, which would definitely keep most people from dropping several hundred more dollars on a new GPU just to take advantage of it.

OLED is the natural heir to plasma with its perfect blacks and infinite contrast ratios. Shouldn't be too long now until they become affordable: the 55 inch LGEC9300 is $3500 (not cheap, but not astronomical for a new tech) http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-55EC9300-55-Inch-Curved/dp/B00KZER5GS

The trick is to use Amazon Warehouse deals. Use a reputable seller, one of the companies with thousands of positive feedbacks. Here's the TV I bought - LG OLED OLED55C7P, pretty-much universally described as the best TV on the market right now. Go to the Warehouse listings, and there's one that could be on your door in two days for $1255.72. It's listed as "used - good", which probably just means that it's not in its original package, but could theoretically mean it's missing a part. It's shipped from and sold by Amazon, so if anything were wrong with the actual set, they'd make it right.

I'd actually recommend getting one of the next two listings, from Vanns or Video & Audio Center. They are both new in the box and come with a full manufacterer's warranty. I bought mine from V&AC, and it was at my door about five days later. They'll call to schedule a time for delivery, so no worries about it being left somewhere unattended.

I know it's a bit above what you said you're looking to spend, but I swear to you it's worth the investment. My son is playing Infamous 3 on it right now, and you can't even imagine how awesome it looks.

Whichever one you get, be sure to tweak the motion settings first, because out-of-the-box both the Sony and the LG had motion smoothing turned on, which produces the "soap opera effect" and makes you think there's something wrong with the TV. ;-)

u/savage321 · 3 pointsr/blackfriday

Rtings.com is a good review site to compare specific models.
IMO, you should get a TCL Roku TV if you are on a budget. If good HDR is important to you get the P series. The P series offers one of the best smart tv interfaces out right now, 3 HDMI ports, deep black levels (not OLED good) but good for the price. If you just want a good 4k set, and don't care about high quality HDR, get the S series. They are both good values at amazon right now with out a black friday deal. I'm not sure but I doubt they will be discounted much more. OLED is top of the line in terms of picture quality. Currently OLED is only made by LG and Sony. I prefer the LG mainly for its smart tv interface but both are remarkable. Perfect black levels are among the many positive qualities of OLED. Both the 2017 OLEDs I mentioned support 4k Dolby Vision and HDR 10 (so does the TCL P series.) Just be aware of burn in with OLEDs. Might want to get a warranty for your expensive TV. Good luck!

u/coldtires · 3 pointsr/xboxone

Save up an extra 300 bucks and get the 2018 LG B8 for $1600, it's worth it. No LCD can match an OLED for image quality in general and while there are very good HDR LCD's the HDR on OLED's is quite good to begin with.

https://www.amazon.com/LG-inches-Smart-OLED-OLED55B8PUA/dp/B07DRRYS1W/

The B8 has two important HDR functions the 2017 C7/B7 series do not

  1. LG changed they way they track HDR metadata giving a better more accurate presentation.
  2. They added a dynamic tone mapping feature in game mode that can greatly improve the HDR experience (though it my vary from title to title).

Both of those features help combat the overly dim/dark scenes you can get in some HDR implementations due to miss matched tone mapping systems that affect all types of HDR10 across LCD and OLED.

LG have said the 2017 models will not be getting the above features. So if you buy a C7/B7 you are reliant on a game having an internal HDR calibration setting to adjust to the display or hope that down the road the HDR game group which MS & LG are now a part of will sort out these issues as the console scans the TV for HDR profile into and makes the adjustments on it's side.

Given the amount of money your spending you want everything just right with maximum flexibility, get the B8.
u/ForeverSteak · 3 pointsr/colorists

The folks on liftgammagain talk about this quite a bit. You'd obviously need a lut box. Panasonic OLED That's the one they use.

u/Scathing_Unicorn · 3 pointsr/hometheater

Already under 2k for a new 55".

LG released a new model that is the same as the others, but it does NOT have onboard atmos, which means that the TV speakers cannot do atmos, but this shouldn't matter if you use a sound system anyways.

LG B7A

u/karazax · 3 pointsr/4kTV

NU8500 is a good TV if you are getting a great clearance price on it.
Newegg had it for $619.99 but has since sold out. At that price it's a good deal, but at closer to $1,200 there are better options like the LG OLED B8

Here are rtings.com top recommendations for 55 inch, though sometimes the model numbers change in different countries.

u/ChiefAzrael · 3 pointsr/OLED

Oops, I meant $2k lower not $3k lower. The 77" C8 was launched at $8999. The 77" C9 was announced at $6999.

The 77" C8 dropped to $5799 in November at the LG authorized retailers: https://camelcamelcamel.com/LG-Electronics-OLED77C8PUA-77-Inch-Ultra/product/B079TT1RLY?active=amazon&context=search

If the new model maintains the $2k difference, it would come out at $3799 for November holiday sales before popping back up to $5k.

u/NegaJosh · 2 pointsr/gaming

currently around $3000 US dollars. About $3500 maple dollars.

u/svirbt · 2 pointsr/hometheater

It is very hard to find a television with decent sound anymore. This is why external audio setups are becoming more popular. Setting up audio with your system can be anything from a cheap, crappy sound bar (waste of money IMHO) to spending tens of thousands of dollars on DACs, preamps, amps, speakers, cabling, ect. to anything else in between. I suggest taking u/Brandorff's suggestion and check out a good starter audio thread like r/zeos who breaks things down very simply and tiers the setups depending on different budget requirements. I think the F8500 is the best tv out right now (below $6000) and I think you will be very happy with it!

My suggestion when looking for audio is to find audio shops and other electronics stores in the area and just listen to what is out there. Everyone prefers different things when it comes to audio, so the more you listen the better your decision you will make on your future audio purchases!

Video of X900E’s off-axis performance, colors shift, reduced brightness, and blacks become grey.

I have a 58” plasma with seating at 8ft and 12ft. At 12ft, it’s by no means large, but still easily enjoyable and all text on-screen is easily readable (easy to tell if a screen is too small or not).

I would likely go with the OLED.

If an iOS user, load up the Amazon app and click on a listing for a 65”/75” tv listing (specifically, here’s the 65” OLED and 75” Sony), and then use the augmented reality camera to see exactly how large each would look in your space.

u/BL24L · 2 pointsr/4kTV

Yeah I saw this on amazon,

LG Electronics OLED55B8PUA (2018)

https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-OLED55B8PUA-55-Inch-Ultra/dp/B07DRRYS1W

Really tempted. It's a 2018 model but for the price I can live with it. Still, it's on the high end of what I want to spend and I game so I'm always worried about burn-in. Had a plasma and I think I spent more time worrying about burn in then enjoying the tv.

I'll take a look at a few of those suggestions.

The TVs are pretty decently priced, were even cheaper on Amazon during the sales last year. I expect prices to fall even lower this holiday season.

u/ferapy · 1 pointr/hometheater

I bought a Samsung UN55MU6300 two months ago and I'm over it already. Netflix is okay but in other programming the blacks are so washed out imo it was a waste of $500. I wish I had just spent the $1500 on an OLED like an LG OLED55C7P. I'm a noob so ask others to back it up but everything i've read so far says brand doesn't matter near as much as OLED vs non-OLED.

u/Sexytimeturtle · 1 pointr/xboxone

This is what you really want. The C8 may even have Freesync it was mentioned they may hit with it (edit: nope 2019)

u/BenevolentCheese · 1 pointr/Games

> for 1/8 of the cost

You can get a 55" OLED for $1300, cheaper if you wait for a sale, so like 25-30% of the cost. Obviously still a big savings, but as the owner of an OLED TV, if you can afford it, my god is worth it. It's the biggest leap in screen tech since the first flat screen plasmas 15-20 years ago. The blacks are so fucking black that you think something is wrong with your TV the first time you see it, because you've been living your life tricking your eyes into thinking greys on displays are actually black.

u/The1stNikitalynn · 1 pointr/assholedesign

I just made the jump to 4K with the LG OLED65C7P and I am incredibly impressed so far, it is just a fine piece of technology. I'd almost gaurantee a price drop within the next month or so, so I'd wait a little bit.

I'd also pick up a AV receiver with HDCP 2.2 support in order to eliminate the possibility of needing to upgrade any time in the next 5 years. The one I am getting is the Denon AVRS510BT

And Finally, unless you have any means of accessing 4K UHD Content via Netflix/UHD Blu Ray Player/ Game Console, There's really no reason to upgrade to 4K just yet.

Make a list of what you want, and cut it down to the necessities to start off.

u/Fichidius · 1 pointr/xboxone

Ah well I see where the disconnect is. You're talking about 65" prices and I'm talking about 55" prices. XD

iPhones have the same MSRP across all retailers.

TVs generally have the same prices across all retailers (Example: LG's OLED65C8P at Amazon, LG, Best Buy.)

Laptops generally have the same prices across all retailers (Example: Microsoft's Surface 6 at Microsoft, Amazon, Best Buy)

You can't compare "bags of rice of the same size and brand" across grocery stores as each have their own strategies in getting you through the door. One store may decide to have a $5 off sale but other items wouldn't be on sale, and as most families do their grocery shopping in one place, stores take advantage of that. Stores will take losses on certain items and higher profits on others according to their research, the season, etc.

Electronics are a different retailing model as most people do research into pricing prior to purchase as they aren't likely to repeatedly buy the product.

Price fixing in any of these scenarios would mean these retailers got together and said "hey let's take a 50% profit margin on these products instead of the 10% profit margin that the recommended MSRP would allow us." And because no one else sold it, consumers would be forced to pay the heftier price.

You are saying retailers dropping their prices around the same time is price fixing, so what do you expect them to do? Best Buy lowers their price for Mario Party to $45, earning them a $2 profit per copy, but Amazon and Wal-mart have to stay at $60? They'd literally get no sales off Mario Party because everyone would buy from Best Buy.

It depends on your grading space, but I would go with one of the LG OLED tv’s. I use a 55” C9. The B8 can be picked up for about $1200, depending on where you are.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DRRYS1W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_fLNNDb9M0TZ9J

You would need a some kind of Decklink and an SDI to HDMI converter. You would also need to calibrate it. Again, depending on where you are, you should hire someone to do this. It’s not an unreasonable cost and you only need to do it once or twice a year. It’s better to hire someone who knows what they’re doing rather than to spend a lot of money on equipment and attempt to figure it out yourself.

The best bang for your buck when it comes to 4k HD tv's is the TCL Roku TV, https://www.bestbuy.com/site/tcl-55-class-54-6-diag--led-2160p-smart-4k-ultra-hd-tv-roku-tv/5878703.p?skuId=5878703
which is a shockingly cheap $370. You can see a review for it at https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl/s-series-4k-2017-s405. There's a 49" variant too on amazon, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MYGISTO/ref=twister_B071J9GQP8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 for $330.

You can get a similar tv with better picture quality for $600 https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl/p-series-2017-p607

If you want to go better than that, then it's got to be the LG OLED tv's (that tim is always raving about) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073K3LPGF?tag=rtings-tv-bs10b-20&ie=UTF8 but the cost is $1600. I don't really think it's worth it to buy tv's between the picture quality of the $600 TCL p607 and the LG OLED's because the TCL P607 is such a great deal, and that it isn't until you get to OLED that you can see a noticable "jump" in picture quality.

I would wait until 4K HDR OLED's come down in price to about $1300 for 50-60 inch models.

If I had to buy one now I'd get the newest OLED model. In 2015 OLED's were way to expensive and way to glitchy with tons of issues but now they are more stable and will offer a better picture over anything out.

Right now this is probably the best TV a normal person can buy in this size range, it is still $3K though

Look at this 77 inch Sony OLED in America its currently 7k USD:

Here in Japan, the cheapest is 25k USD !!!! So that's 3 times overpriced !!!

You'd think the Japanese manufacturer would give a break to their own people, but noooo, corporate greed is king of Japan, and is what will be their downfall. Every single Japanese manufacturer will be gone / bought out in 2-3 years.

Seems a bit low for a 65C7 even on clearance which they are right now. If it were $2199 U.S. I would say it was okay.

For reference this is the U.S. price from Amazon. $2599

Well if that's your budget I'd recommend this:
If you're unwilling to budge on the 65 in. measurement then I would definitely go with the x900e. It has excellent, deep blacks due to its local dimming and full-array LED back-lighting. It also has a massive color gamut meaning it will support HDR content extremely well. The one real crux of this television is its viewing angles. The x900e utilizes a VA (Vertical Alignment) panel, which causes some muddling of blacks and brightness when viewing the display from a side angle. This can become an issue for living rooms with wide viewing areas, but for the most part is generally not a concern.
On the other hand, for $100 more, you could go for a 55 in. LG B7 OLED TV. It is a step down in size, yes, but a step up in essentially everything else. OLED televisions utilize a full array of Organic Light Emitting Diodes, hence the acronym. These make up every pixel of the screen and are capable of individually dimming themselves and emitting color. This is different from LCD LED televisions that utilize a color producing panel which is then illuminated by a back-light. Blacks, colors and brightness levels of OLED displays are unrivaled as a result of this design and maintain consistent performance at all viewing angles as opposed to the x900e's VA panel.

With your current budget, I would personally be choosing between these two. It is just a question of whether or not you are willing to compromise on size.
On a side note: if you are waiting for something better, that something is probably going to end up being an OLED. Prices for OLED displays will probably not come down for at least several years; so if you are waiting, it will likely be to save money for a larger OLED display. The x900e, on the other hand, is one of the best LCD LED displays on the market and will definitely remain so for the foreseeable future. If you end up with an x900e, it would without a doubt hold up until prices drop on OLED televisions.

The two options for outputting audio are Bluetooth and Digital Optical audio out.

It's this thing:

Definitly the price will drop. It should be at it's lowest around super bowl time, then drop gradually throughout the summer, and a large dip around black friday. You have more time (keep waiting) or money (buy today and enjoy the picture)?

Edit You can track amazon prices at camelcamelcamel.com and have it send you an email when it hits a certain price.

u/PM_ME-DAT-ASS · 1 pointr/hometheater

you wont. It will actually be slightly higher for the holidays. At Best Buy, last years 55in b6 bottomed out at 1599 prior to black friday, and then went back up to 1799 and stayed there after black friday.

here's what amazons price history for the B6 is. notice the dip during november that was never matched again? it was for about 2 weeks before black friday.

Hey, I'm very interested to learn more! I'm in Canada, and Black Friday price drops don't seems to be released to the public yet, so your comment is interesting.

I believe you meant the regular price for the 55'' B8 to be $2999, not $3999. At least that's what it is on Costco now.

I'm personally more interested in a 65'' C8. Judging from the Amazon history, regular price is around $4000, and it dropped a few times to $3500. Can I expect the Black Friday price to be $3000?

And from your personal experience, where would be the best place to buy a TV for someone living in Quebec? Go directly to BestBuy/Walmart/Tanguay? Order online from Amazon? From somewhere else?

u/youcannotharmme · 1 pointr/nvidia

MSRP is $2499. Best I could find is camelcamelcamel price history for amazon. $1796 in July, $1596 in August, and just dropped to $1496 within the past couple days.

u/stereoesque · 1 pointr/Bestbuy

FYI prices on the C9 lineup were significantly cheaper just over a week ago. The price below was from Amazon, but BB had the same price on their site (plus they price match Amazon anyway). I'm guessing LG is requiring their retail partners to raise prices for the next few weeks so they can "discount" again for Black Friday. I'd highly suggest waiting a few weeks.

I’d be suspect of their quality at that price. The person I was replying to said he has a C7, which is running (on sale) for $2,700 on Amazon right now.

u/BoulderCAST · 0 pointsr/xboxone

B6 has some strange input lag issues which I dont believe have been fixed. These lag issues were not present on the rest of the OLED x6 series.

BTW, the 55" B6 is already under $2000 --> https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-OLED55B6P-55-Inch-Ultra/dp/B01CDF9S1G/

u/MrJim911 · 0 pointsr/xboxone

Depending on your financial situation you want THIS TV for the Xbox One X. That's what I'm getting and it's a thing of beauty.

u/mikesaintjules · 0 pointsr/OLED

Some people have sporadically seen the price get as low as $1500. The price dropped down to $1800 mostly from places like on LG's website and on Amazon. That seems to be the promotional price right now, including the places the Guy below mentioned.

$1899 is the lowest I've seen. They're either going to go down lower from there on Black Friday, or stay at that price point until then and then go back up to maybe the list price for the holiday season.

If you see the "AUA" model, it's basically the same TV, it just means it's tagged from specific retailers.

EDIT: I never heard of this site, but they're claiming to have this TV on sale for $1,099

u/RatherMammonly · 0 pointsr/Televisions

OLED is dominated by LG.
There is currently the B6 model on sale but a little over your budget.
Amazon and TV Review 1, TV Review 2

Other brands such as Samsung have QLED and Vizio with their XLED TVs but they simply do not compare and are honestly over priced.

u/vanquish421 · 0 pointsr/4kTV

This is such horseshit.

>You’re paying more because of the Acoustic Sound Surface. Basically not needing a soundbar, and can hook a powered sub straight to the TV. The LG absolutely 100% needs external sound. That’s why.

The LG B8 is $1,500.

The A8F is $2,300.

For that $800 difference, you could get an insane sound bar, or a great sound bar and an A/V receiver. Hell, $800 would even cover a budget 5.1 system that's still going to be much better than a sound bar.

>Plus the Sony processor is 100 times better than the LG.

More absolute horse shit. The Sony processor is better, but not "100 times better". And if this is extreme hyperbole, it has no place in the same paragraph where you reference objective differences. The LG processor and upscaling is just fine. Is the Sony better? Yes. I own one, and I swear by it. Is it worth part of that $800 difference more over the LG? Hell no.

Identical overall rating from Rtings, and the Sony doesn't even score much higher in sound quality.

u/Snowyscorpion · -1 pointsr/amazon

So I was just recently handed a situation - Amazon shipped me a LG 65inch OLED C8 TV (most likely 2018 model) instead of a 2018 Sony Bravia X830F LED TV.

I did some preliminary research and found that OLED is of course a premium to LED TVs, so essentially as a consumer, if you want to say, "match" the performance of a OLED television from a LED perspective, one must "scale up" in certain areas/features.

Due to the very limited online resources comparing the two televisions (because you are essentially comparing oranges to apples) I have now turned to the Reddit community for guidance and what your thoughts on this matter would be. In your own calculated mind, would you advise me to keep the LG television, or accept the return and exchange for the original Sony 70inch TV.

For convenience purposes see below for the stats/features related to each television. The LG description was pulled from Best Buy page and the Sony from Amazon page:

Oled would be 2-3 grand (depending on size) unless you're buying them the second they release, which is dumb.

Just because some oled somewhere costs 6k doesn't mean it costs 6k to get into the oled game.

Source: bought an LG B6 65" OLED 2 months ago for $3,000.

Edit: lol, downvoted for the truth? LG OLED with HDR, 55 inch for $2,000 / 65 inch for $3,500.
