dont bother with an OTC one that you have to boil or whatever. i spent the 90bucks on this custom made one from amazon and its made the exact same way as it will from your dentist. the only difference? your dentist takes the mold, and sends it off to be made. you can save 500 by making the mold yourself then sending it off.

edit: for what its worth, ive used mine every night for the last year. still works, and in good condition (i brush mine in the morning with whatever toothpaste is leftover on the toothbrush after brushing my teeth). also, there is an option to "upgrade" to the harder, tougher material for an extra 10-15 bucks that the top poster is raving about for which he paid $700. i declined as the soft one seemed to make more sense for me. you can also get a replacement for ~20 bucks through them as well if you do lose it. they keep your mold on file! all of this information is on the included instructions

I had two dry sockets after wisdom teeth removal and that pain is NO JOKE! Brushing my hair would cause pain! Breathing causes pain! I punched a hole in the wall!!! I was a 22 year old female that punched a hole in the wall!!!! That pain is no joke! I am also a dental assistant so... please do get the meds, or go see your oral surgeon to gauze it up and put meds inside or the following treatment; (I had my procedure done thanksgiving week where everyone closed 3 days after I had the removal so...) from Walgreens there’s a packet like so . Be careful with this oil because it will burn your lips if it gets on your lips. Have ice nearby if so. Get a syringe. Get some in the syringe and squeeze about 3-5 drops INSIDE THE HOLE. Now you have to do the following as well. Get this orajel and put the tip inside the hole and squeeze till you feel it full. That’s it! This will help greatly!!!! Now be very careful if you decide to eat. This stuff tastes nasty if comes out while eating. I hope you feel better... I mean you won’t for a while..: but I hope either you get your meds or do this recommendation. I’m sorry OP :(

This is what I do. Denture cleaner is awesome for all sorts of soak cleanings.

I use this stuff: Regent Labs StainAway Plus, 8.1-Ounce (Pack of 4) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003KVNEMM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_LTQIBb10FAM3E

A capful in the mug, hot water, let sit overnight. That amount will last you a couple years at least.

Oralmedic is the single greatest thing in the world for dealing with painful ulcers. Unfortunately, the FDA thinks Americans are fucking idiots, so you can only get it through a dentist, but the UK treats their citizens like adults, so you can just order it online. I discovered this about a year ago and ordered 3 packages to save on shipping on the off chance it would work.

It turns 2 weeks of agony into 2 days. It chemically cauterizes the ulcer so there's no pain and recovery starts immediately instead of the usual progression of it getting worse, then way worse, then unbelievably bad, before finally starting to get better.

If you just grind your teeth, dentists hate this and I'm gonna be down voted, but you can go on amazon and get it done.

https://www.amazon.com/Dental-Lab-Night-Guard-Upper/dp/B0769YSBNX

Just make sure if you start to have jaw aches or other aches, to stop wearing it and get it checked by a dentist.

I was apparently having issues with grinding my teeth at night a couple years back - Cirka tried to get me to buy a $400 mouth guard to wear at night. You can legit buy them for $15 on Amazon.

Fuck that guy.

u/mmtree · 3 pointsr/LifeProTips

Its called bruxism and its sorta serious; you don't rebuild what gets ground down. I have two guards. A thin one like invisalign but made from a mold of my teeth and a thicker 3mm one, both are upper teeth only. I prefer the thin one because I don't notice it as night but the thicker one will last longer(mileage varies on how much you grind) and it's really not bad compared to the thinner one. You'll notice an immediate increase in how well you sleep too after using it. There are devices that will help stop bruxism as opposed to just protecting the teeth but you need a dentist for that. I was able to get a dentist friend to make them for me so I saved some money there, but it still cost 200 for both as that's what the lab charged. My jackass dentist wanted 600 for one guard, he can go fuck himself.

Personally, these custom guards will probably work but they have to be the made from a mold type and I would suggest the 3mm so you know it'll last. There are some companies on amazon that looked pretty quality when I checked. Oh, one thing. I went the sports mouth guard direction at first, easy fix right? Eh...they are designed to suction to your teeth so they don't fall out which after 8 hours of wearing really hurts your teeth. The custom guards are molded but don't have the pull of sports guards.

edit: http://www.amazon.com/Professional-Custom-Dental-Teeth-Direct/dp/B0042UAZCM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1397103181&sr=8-4&keywords=bruxism+mouth+guard This is the one that most resembles one you would get from a dentist. I know people say "I'm not gonna spend xyz" on these, but just remember...once you grind down the tooth, there's not a damn thing modern science can do to rebuild that enamel. IF the cheaper ones work, great, but better to invest 100$ now than $5k later on dental work.

u/easyimpossible · 3 pointsr/castiron

I've used powdered denture cleaner—somethin like this, not specifically that one. I pour an amount in consistent with the volume of the instructions then fill with hot, not quite boiling water, and let sit.

My logic is, if you think about the kinds of stains denture cleaner is designed to attack, i.e. food. That matches pretty well with what is likely cooked into the pan. I also endorse Barkeeper's Friend - good stuff. I give the denture cleaner a shot first if I'm looking for a more delicate cleaner before I break out the big guns.

  1. Colgate Max Fresh Wisp Disposable Mini Toothbrush, Peppermint - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HXAIN90/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_srDoDbQNF1M5N

Great for on the go and at my desk for a quick “brush” but there aren’t many in a pack so I try to use no more than 1 of these per day. I got mine at Target but probably would get a better deal on Amazon.

  2. Plackers Orthopick Flosser for Braces - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AKJ3W7I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_HsDoDbRJTQV6P

Samples of these came in my “kit” from my ortho and I ordered a stock on amazon. I use these at nigh and use my waterpik in the morning.

  3. Plackers Grind No More Dental Night Guard for Teeth Grinding- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003GDKH9C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_xtDoDbMBQ84EH

I let my dentist and ortho know I use these (I prefer them to any other mouth guard I’ve tried) and they ok’d them with braces since they aren’t the heat & mold kind. I use them for a little longer than the box recommends (3 days) but toss them when they get gross.

  4. GUM Orthodontic Wax, Mint with Vitamin E and Aloe Vera- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KQ9FF1J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_iuDoDbAEJZPTT

I keep seeing people saying they can’t keep wax on. I love this wax (I got 2 kinds, no flavor and mint) because it’s perforated and easy to size out. Just roll in your fingers before applying otherwise it’s not going to stick. The mint is nice and fresh! I am using this a lot while my cheeks are getting used to poking metal but always remove before eating or brushing!

  5. Preserve Mint Tea Tree Flavored Toothpicks- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077J1K6ZY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_yvDoDbZ4D9Y

Do not use these too aggressively, you don’t want to damage your braces! But after a meal these have been a lifesaver for me. I gently (and hopefully discretely) get food unstuck. I got minty ones and keep a pack in jackets, backpack, car... I’m serious when I say lifesaver!

  6. Trident Sugar Free Chewing Gum- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F1W4Y48/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_AwDoDb2NFAKMM

This is a bigger debate than getting wax to stick! My ortho did tell me that sugar free gum is allowed but not too much and don’t keep chewing it if it dissolves. Consult your ortho if you’re not sure. I was surprised to find that almost all gum is sugar free. Not all but most. I was searching all over for “SUGAR FREE” specifically and it was right at the register! I might get the 15 pack on Amazon though.

  7. Slim Brush Interdental Cleaners- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009MHV3VW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_cyDoDb81CT899

Honestly I don’t use these that often but once and a while it’s nice to clean every nook and cranny. I have to force myself to floss every day so this isn’t something I use often. They are more gentle than toothpicks but food gets caught in the tiny bristles and it turns into a mess. I picked up a small pack at Target.
u/none_shall_pass · 3 pointsr/SleepApnea

Grinding is pretty common.

Once you get a machine and are breathing well, I like this quite a bit.

It's soft, so you don't hurt your teeth or jaw, but substantial enough that you won't bite through.

u/PhesteringSoars · 3 pointsr/CPAP

Get a Bruxism mouthguard. Even if you don't grind your teeth, I couldn't tolerate the chinstrap, and having the mouthguard to bite on, keeps the tongue in/down and solved the same issue you're having. These are the one's I prefer.

u/OriginalZombie · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

You might have started grinding your teeth in your sleep. That can cause tension headaches. You can ask your dentist if your teeth show signs of this and then get these gel teeth guards to wear at night to prevent wear on your teeth and help with the headaches.

Or just skip seeing your dentist and get one of these for $10 now

u/johnthewolf · 2 pointsr/Frugal

my credit is a little shot (590ish) but I've been through the ringer with care credit. most of the insurances I've had, through myself or work, doesn't always cover dental and, at the time, it was considered cosmetic thus not covered.
someone in the thread posted this
http://www.amazon.com/Professional-Custom-Dental-Teeth-Direct/dp/B0042UAZCM
and I plan to try it. I don't grind as hard as I used to but i find myself clenching a little when I'm overly sleep deprived(newborn daughter).

u/plasticinplastic · 2 pointsr/Dentistry

Not a dentist here but I have had bruxism for many years, and I have also been through many, many nightguards of varying expense level.

Before you buy a really expensive guard from a dentist, I recommend checking out these guards on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Professional-Custom-Dental-Teeth-Direct/dp/B0042UAZCM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369971571&sr=8-1&keywords=night+guard+professional They are actually made by a dentist, so they fit your teeth, and they are well worth the money. While they won't fix the grinding problem, they will prevent you from further damaging your teeth.

u/district4aide · 2 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I am a clencher, not so much a grinder, and have a pretty small mouth. I've tried a handful of the night mouth guards. I finally found this one at Walmart and really like it because it's a very slim profile and very comfortable rather than the huge bulky athletic style guards. It holds my molars apart, where I clench, but it also has little side walls that restrict side-to-side motion for grinders. I can talk with it in pretty well too, it's not very invasive.

u/haydeecm · 2 pointsr/smiledirectclub

These are the companies I am aware of that produce retainers:

  1. For Essix-type clear retainers you can use

  • www.sportingsmiles.com they also sell retainers through amazon, but direct from their website is cheaper. You can read reviews at amazon.
  • go through your local orthodontist/dentist

These companies send you an impression kit, that they use to make your retainers. I'm personally planning on ordering from sportingsmiles when I finish my SmileDirect plan.

  1. For Hawley type metal retainers

u/Tintinabulation · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Clove oil is a pretty traditional tooth pain relief thing, look into that.

Also, if you're a drinker a hot toddy right before bed will help a lot, too. :)

Did you find any dental wax to put on the chip? They also make stuff like this to use if its more the air on the fresh chip.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

u/DyslexicHobo · 2 pointsr/findareddit

These things are great. I grind my teeth at night, too. I don't think there is really much you can do to stop it. These night guards aren't really that noticeable. They're cheap and last for quite a while (they say 3-day, but I wear them for up to 2 weeks).

I use a Carbamide Peroxide 10% mouth rinse for minor bites as well as canker sores. Like this

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I agree with most posters here that a nighttime mouth-guard cannot last the destruction that your teeth will do to it.

That being said I clench my teeth at night and wear these which I have found last about three weeks before I need to replace them. It is the best over the counter nighttime guard when you consider price/performance.

edit: forgot to include the link to the ones I wear, http://www.amazon.com/DenTek-Comfort-Fit-Dental-Guard/dp/B002WTCK4Q which are definitely not BIFL.

u/MisterFrogJudgesYou · 2 pointsr/sleep

They make night time mouth guards that work well. You might have to try several brands to find the one that fits best, but it's worth the trial and error when you get the right one. I use these every night:

Plackers Mouth Guard Grind No More Dental Night Protector, 14 Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003GDKH9C/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_Tp0rxb73MXPWP

u/TrickyDaisy · 2 pointsr/TMJ

I have a great over-the-counter nightguard, SISU Sova for $50 off Amazon that my dentist recommended, and it's helped A LOT.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00NBU4QX8/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1479446583&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=sova+night+guard&dpPl=1&dpID=41Wnek1VmoL&ref=plSrch

It's way smaller than any other guard I've seen, and I have a tiny mouth (had to get 8 permanent teeth pulled because there just wasn't room). I've used it for months and it's never fallen out or gotten chewed up at all. I have had a few weird gum-stuck-on-my-teeth dreams though, glad that's not just me....

u/TortureSteak · 2 pointsr/mildlyinfuriating

I used to get them a lot, and my doctor recommended Gly-Oxide... won't make it go away instantly, but it will make it heal about 2x faster.

u/Wayne_Spooney · 2 pointsr/barstoolsports

Not a dentist, but I would call your dentist right now and schedule something as soon as possible. You can get temporary filling at CVS that works alright, just make sure you brush the tooth and mouthwash thoroughly before you put it on. Here's a link:

u/Platypoctopus · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Try Placker's Grind No Mores. They look like they couldn't possibly work like a full mouth guard, but they do and they're completely comfortable because of how small they are.

I couldn't stand the full mouth guards and they would immediately alter my bite for hours after I woke up. Was very skeptical of the Plackers, but they do prevent you from grinding your teeth together and they're so inconspicuous that you could even keep them in during the day and still talk, drink, etc.

At the very least it's a very cheap option to try and see if it helps.

u/supertimes4u · 1 pointr/TMJ

Okay I've been in your spot.

You NEED something. Especially if you're getting ear aches etc.

I used this for years. I'm in Canada and it was $30 over the counter for 2 of them. They have slightly different boxing for version of it. I got it at Walmart. Check Walmart and whichever grocery store is popular. Should be in the same aisle as toothpaste near the floss etc.

They say to use them til they're yellowish or something. I personally went as long as 3 months using one. I'd say use one per month.

I loved it more than the boiling versions. Super simple. Don't need to do anything to it. You can just use it.

Then eventually I went to a dentist and got a mouth guard made for $200ish (Canadian)

It just covers the top of my mouth. But it stays fit in place. It's similar to a sports mouth guard. Not meant to prevent grinding. Just to guard your teeth.

More expensive $1,500-2,000 options are what's called Occlusional Splints (sp?) and they're meant to keep the jaw aligned at night to prevent problems.

Anyway that over the counter one worked well for years. And now my night guard is working well. A dentist should be able to make you one for less than $200. Depending where you live etc.

u/salziger · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I grind my teeth like no one's business when I sleep. I think this would help with achy jaws and serious tooth damage. Thank you for the contest :)

u/DasEFFEXOR · 1 pointr/Effexor

It could be from bruxism. I would clench while sleeping but with Effexor it became a real issue. Painful jaw type of thing. Don't even mess with those things you can get at Walgreens/CVS. Grab one of these. Same shit as a dentist would make but doesn't cost $200-$500 for it. I've got two and can't imagine not sleeping with one now.

Armor Guard Mouth or Dental Guard, Day and Night, Teeth Grinding or Clenching, Multi-symptom TMJ relief https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I5136XE/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_i_-OZQDb1EZP8M4

u/ghostmrchicken · 1 pointr/askTO

You can buy it at Amazon.ca:

https://www.amazon.ca/Oralmedic-Mouth-Ulcer-Treatment-0-2ml/dp/B0015X5ZW4

It seems expensive but I'm not sure what's the normal retail price.

Also if your situation is really bad you can go to the dentist and they will spray the affected area for you (not sure if all dentists do this).

u/purewhispers · 1 pointr/Anxiety

I have similar issues when my anxiety gets problematic. I find myself clenching my jaw a lot (it's tough to notice unless you know to consciously check for it), and after a few days of that I start getting jaw pain or twinges on one or both sides.

What I do is try to be more cognizant of when I'm clenching and then stop myself. At its worst, I use a cheap mouth guard when I sleep such as this one. Once I'm more on top of it, it usually improves after about a week.

My partner and I each got one. We both really like ours. You do the mold and send it in. I highly recommend it. You have options to customize it for your needs too. It's $120 versus the awful 300-500 that I would pay otherwise.

u/dreiter · 1 pointr/Frugal

Amazon actually sells a custom guard solution. It's not the cheapest option, but it's dentist-quality and should fit much better than a generic. They send you a package and you send them back a mold of your teeth, which they use to make a custom-fit guard. I haven't purchased one for myself, but the reviews are positive. Link

u/cozyteadrinker · 1 pointr/JUSTNOMIL

You can get a night guard for $20-$30 at wal-mart in the dental care aisle. Some you boil to soften and then bite them to shape it to your mouth, others have an adjustable width. Mine is an adjustable width set of two for $30 and it lasts me several months each. You can get a custom one from your dentist, my dentist said it's at least $500. There are also online and mail-order custom ones you can get for $180-$300+ depending on the brand and model.

Here's a better overview of pricing than my own anecdotal experience: http://health.costhelper.com/dental-night-guard.html

This is really close to the one I use right now.

I bought this one and I like it more than the last one I had made in a dentist's office. The cheaper ones are definitely way better than nothing (I wear mine religiously), but this one has lasted a long time and is super comfortable.

u/UncleEggma · 1 pointr/CankerSores

If you're able to suffer through 10 minutes of intense pain, I've had luck with these: Dentek Canker Covers

They're like little pills that you have to hold firmly in place against a dry ulcer for like 10-15 minutes until it adheres to it. (The instructions say 20 seconds - it's a lie) Make sure it doesn't get stuck to your finger or Qtip or whatever you're using to hold it in place. Make sure it doesn't slide around on the ulcer. It will eventually stick in place and you can let go. Saliva will then continue to help it adhere and it will begin to swell up into this nasty blob of protective goo that will keep your teeth from rubbing on it and allow at least a moderate amount of mouth-use without pain.

It also seems to speed up the healing process by quite a bit. I used two over two days on a massive one I had a while ago and will definitely use them again at the first sight of my next one. They're a little awkward, but the only thing I've found worth sharing with others. Sick of all the bullshit about anbesol and allum powder or w/e. I feel like people who get ulcers your size just roll their eyes tearfully at such suggestions.

I also bought this for the same ulcer that my first suggestion helped heal: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015X5ZW4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Glad the cheaper option seems to work well enough.

I discovered these a couple of years ago. They are not heavy duty enough for striking, but perfect for grappling. They stay on while you talk and do not hinder speech or breathing at all. They are also super cheap and comfortable.

u/MzHarleyQuinn · 1 pointr/Frugal

I bought these in June of 2013 according to my Amazon. I'm on the second one, and it works fantastically for my grinding. I too was not willing to shell out $600 for a custom night guard when I hear so many stories of people losing them. I probably have to replace this one soon as I'm wearing through it, but still...I paid $13 for them.

u/cozyghost · 1 pointr/Anxiety

I haven't been diagnosed with TMJ or anything but I definitely grind my teeth at night, have awful headaches all the time, and often wake up with tightness in my jaw and neck. I've used mouthguards at night for years. It can be a migraine trigger.

I found some cheap (disposable) dental guards at a dollar store near me that helped somewhat. (They looked something like this, except the part where your teeth bite on was soft -- these don't look soft.) You can also find better ones on Amazon that might cost a bit more, but may help until you can see a dentist.

u/SourMelissa · 1 pointr/Celiac

I’m a medical massage therapist, so I have some experience with this. The “band around the head” tension headaches are often caused by jaw clenching from/teeth grinding (TMJD), and most people do it in their sleep and/or under stress. The clenching/grinding during sleep can also lead to fatigue because it becomes more difficult to get into REM sleep. Try noticing if you’re clenching during the day.

It may sound strange, but talk to your dentist, let him/her know what you’ve been feeling. If they recommend a bite guard, I usually tell clients to try an OTC one like this one to make sure you’ll keep it in at night before you spend $300-500 on a custom one. If it works, then invest the money.

A properly trained massage therapist may also be able to help. I also had great success with dry needling (from a physical therapist); I could go 3-4 nights without grinding after each treatment, and that’s with fibromyalgia causing severe spasming.

Hope this helps some.

u/frenchmeister · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon
  1. I bite the fork sometimes when I'm eating. It's only because I'm wearing lipstick or eating something sticky I don't want all over my lips, but from what I've heard this is one of the worst things a person can do :(

  2. I'm not proud of needing this because I never went to a dentist in between middle school and when my wisdom teeth came in. My last dentist a few years ago didn't mention it even though they had fully erupted already, but apparently my wisdom teeth changed my bite so much all my molars are going to break eventually (the top wisdom teeth already did) unless I get braces. A custom mouthguard is about all I can do to protect my teeth/deal with my TMJ in the meantime :/

  3. Yeah, yeah, I should have gone to the dentist in high school back when I could still afford it, but fuck it, I'm human. Mistakes were made.

    Thanks for the contest!

You might want to check out one of those temporary filling kits in the meantime if your cavities are painful or sensitive. Poor oral health may have links to other health conditions, so it's good that you're taking it seriously! Has your dad never had a cavity before?? I'm pretty sure eating spicy food just makes it hurt more.

I was actually just talking to my sibling today about whether or not we got all of our vaccines. Our mom definitely believes that vaccines can cause autism, and I'm really grateful that we were all grown before the antivaxx movement gained more traction cuz that stupid shit is seriously spreading.

Also I don't know if your dad wasn't aware of these resources or how tight on money you guys were, but there are usually dental schools who are available for a cheaper fee in exchange for giving their students more practice. That's what I did when I didn't have insurance.

Could use help with some basic things, mouthguard for tmj/ptsd, trash bags or anything else off Household or Groceries wishlist. Would appreciate anything! It all helps!

I have TMJ issues as well and definitely clench/grind my teeth more when I’m high, which just aggravates it. I’d recommend getting the over-the-counter mouth guards, they’re fairly cheap compared to a custom one and work just as well ($22 compared to $300-400).

The best ones imo are the Placker’s Grind No More . They don’t require boiling or anything, just pop ‘em in before you sleep and the discomfort should slowly start getting better. The package recommends disposing of it every three days but really you can use one for about a week without any issue.

Good luck with your jaw!

I use this mouth guard only because I had braces until very recently so I couldn't get one from the dentist. It still works fine. On mobile, so forgive the raw link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ZN3D4C?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

These are the best - cheap, and when they get nasty you just throw them away. They are smaller than normal night guards and I can barely tell they are there.
