I AM IN YOUR SITUATION! Just got on this board three days ago. Spent $200 over the past three days and I've drastically improved my wardrobe.

1. Go through the right hand guides of knowing what fits you and what not. If you're an athletic type, go to /r/malefashionadvice there is a post on athletic builds if you fit that description. The most important thing is understanding what fits. I bought a medium out of shame of rather not buying a small convincing myself that the somewhat baggy look was better. I went back to smalls and I realized how much better I looked.

2. Shoes! Get yourself a pair of from what a newbie understands as "classy" shoes. You're in college so you're surrounded by meat heads, swag vags, and sweatpants wearing ants, and the occassional look at me I wear crazy shit. Most of the time, they're wearing Nikes, Addidas, Underarmor, and other shit that you probably have. You'll get the occassional mocassin and boots, but what'll make you really stand out in terms of fashion is your shoes. This is good. MFA is (in my opinion off a brief 3 day lurking): classy, mature, timeless, and just overall attractive male attire.

So! The investment I made were Brown Suede Clarks for $70 @ Journeys in NYC Best investment so far. I've never owned anything so nice yet casual as these shoes. They're extremely comfortable.

For $21 you can get Seude Oxfords at JC Penny. Another cheap and truly great shoe. Just looks plain good with anything. I got mine for $15 because I was very patient and nice to the saleswoman (mid 50s); she gave me a wink and said I'll take some off for ya.

3. Pants I would go again with the suggestion of jeans. 511 - Skinny, 514 - Slim Straight. These are Levi's obviously. I've owned Arizona, Lee, and Wrangler; Levi's are just unbeatable. For $40 and sometimes $30 you can get a pair. I would get one pair of Levi's. Make sure it's a pair you definitely would love.

One pair of Khakis. If you're in New York City, get over to Uniqlo and get yourself a pair of $30 really good quality chinos (khakis). They can be tailored in the store so don't be afraid if you see 33x36 pants or 30x34 pants. They can be cut for free. Otherwise stop by Amazon to get D1 Slims or Alphas.

GAP has a sale going on for 40% off or 30% without a coupon. They have a limited selection of pretty good quality khakis that are fitting and are decent when it comes to price ($40-$50).

4. Tops Old Navy. It was up there that their premium t-shirts are on sale for Buy One Get One Free. They're pretty good quality for $6 bucks a pop ($12 for one, so you get 2 for essentailly $6). I grabbed some myself. Theres a coupon for 10% online somewhere. I used it. However, Old Navy fits may not be so kind on you as they are with me. As their sizes scale, it scales wider; it does not scale with benevolence longer.

Graphic Tees are alright in college. Again plain simple colors/patterns will distinguish you from the highschool attire that even these 2nd semester freshies will be wearing.

For your budget, I would take your time shopping the clearance racks of most department stores. I went to JCPenny the other day and found a slim fitting GREAT purple J. Ferrar shirt for $7. For the way it fits and the decent quality, this button down shirt was an absolute steal. I also bought 2 $12 dollar button downs from Macys that happened to fit me perfectly. Again it's on where you're looking.

Polos Polos are easy to come by. Old Navy has em as do most stores. Whether you like them with a logo or plain, even Ralph Lauren Polos can be spotted on the cheap. Do you barging.

5. Outerwear Cardingans are on clearance in the Old Navy rack for $6-12. I picked up one. I picked up a great fitting hoodie from there as well for $7. Fits me perfect and shows off my muscles /flex.

If you've heard of a store called Against All Odds, they have a good selection of outwear (more swagster area and ghetto-fab), but it's better especially for the athletic fit. They have some sales and the quality isn't atrocious. You can check that out.

Thrifting Theres a thread on the side; hopefully you don't need a link.

Lets Review

  • Take your time, browse accordingly. There is no need to rush.
  • Look everywhere and always check the clearance.
  • Make sure the clothes fit, if you like the style but are a little iffy on the fit do not buy it unless you think it'll shrink on to you.

What I did in the past 3 days:

  • $80 Clarks
  • $22 Bass @ J C Penny's + J. Ferrar Slim Shirt
  • $12 2 Old Navy Premium V-Neck Shirts
  • $8 Cardingan at Old Navy
  • $7 Hoodie at Old Navy
  • $40 Levi 514 Jeans
  • $30 Chinos @ Uniqlo (add 5-10 dollars for Dockers)

    Total: $193

Hopefully that'll set you up. If you're not iffy on spending that much on Clarks, then there is more in your budget for other things like pants or underwear.

Anyways, go here if you want $100 starter kits.

Good Luck and let me know of your great finds.

Amazon Essentials. I haven't worn them much yet, so can't comment on durability. But they fit great and come in a decent range of colors.

Dockers Alphas are a pretty good casual pair. Sign up for their email and get 20% off. I'd get them from Amazon for cheaper - select the gravel color. If you sign up for Amazon's clothing email list you can get 20% off too.

H&M always has cheap, well fitting chinos for around $30. Sign up for their email list and get 20% off 1 item there as well. The quality isn't the best.

I bought a pair of White Dockers Alphas, they fit well, but there is one issue - the front pocket pouches are visible through the fabric. I don't know how to direct link to the image, but an example of this is shown in the gallery that ccuster911 posted. Is this typical for white pants? I might return these...

Honestly? You don't have enough time to make it yourself unless you've already made a few garments of complexity in the past. You will need to order online. Do you - or, since you mention school- your parents have Amazon prime? This shirt with these trousers won't look ridiculous. It's not what would have been worn but it won't stand out terribly much either.

u/horsecake22 · 3 pointsr/ULTexas

When I did the OML last year in December, I wore Patagucci Capilene Lightweight Leggings. I regretted that choice maybe twice. It was definitely not something I was worried about. Most of the trail follows a decent path, or at least a path that is clear of bush.

PMags recommends these pants as an alternative to the classic Prana Zion Pants.

I've tried on the Patagonia Terrebonne pants on at the Patagucci store in Austin. I REALLY liked them. But it's hard to justify the premium price. They're really comfortable though. If feels like you're wearing Nike Dri-Fit material all up and down your legs. I'll probably end up buying these to be honest and trying them out this winter.

Feel no need to buy all of these, nor need to buy the highest quality. The following break are "Must haves"

9” Lineman Pliers - Klein is the standard

Knife – Utility - something comfortable to hold.

25 foot Tape Measure - Don't get bottom of the barrel. DeWalt and Milwaukee have 2 packs, one 16' and one 25' for decent prices. I'd store the 16' because you WILL lose the 25' one at some point.

Material Pouch eventuallyget a Tool Pouch, so you have ready access to your tools and materials in their own spots.

Six Screwdrivers (3 Phillips/3 Straight)

OR One 11-in-1 plus a beater flathead, I use a 1/4"(head) x4" (shaft) for my beater, because if it breaks, bends or chips, I can just go to Sears and get a brand new one. Happens about once per year, and it is faster than sending it into Klein.

Tool Box/bag

Claw Hammer

Hacksaw

Flashlight

Below is optional, but very good to have. Work up to these ones. You can chip away like $20 per week and in no time you will have a decent set.

I just got my first real job and the dress code is business casual. I recently bought D1 dockers in black and navy http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002AQ23G6/ref=cm_sw_su_dp and some Alfani button-up shirts.

What kind of shoes should I wear with the chinos? I was thinking of Florsheim shoes, but my parents think they're too dressy for chinos. Any recommendations? Links would be helpful.

u/diamond29 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'm 6 foot and 165ish pounds, but I'm also 22. Here are some quick staples of my wardrobe that I'd recommend that are safe enough that you won't be made fun of and that you can still find cheaply.

LEC button ups - I sized small but you may be able to get away with mediums since you're a bit bigger than I am. These are cheap as hell on sale so they're great to get a lot of, in case you're worried about wearing the same shirt too often.

Levi's 508 - I have an above average thigh/ass to waist proportion, so these achieve a skinnier look while not strangling my dick. My pair is rigid envy and I use a cuff. Stock photos are bad btw.

Dockers Alpha Khakis - Same deal as the jeans. These might be a little more tight in the thigh/dick region, but I still like mine a lot.

Sperries / Keds - Boat shoes are great for casual wear, although obviously a ton of people are going to be wearing them. A cheap pair of keds (plimsolls) are also good, and fewer people tend to wear them.

[American Optical Aviators] (http://www.pilotshop.nl/contents/media/helmet.jpg) - These bad boys used to be standard issue for pilots and I'm pretty sure that they were worn by astronauts during the apollo missions, so you know they're a good value at only $40.

Belt - I got a custom belt made at Narangasset Leathers that's pretty decent for $45, if I remember correctly. Any belt will do, but don't lay down money on a cheap one if you can get some decent leather. You'll end up throwing it out after a year or two of frequent use, and that's just a waste of money.

Harrington jacket - I really like this style of jacket and I have a wool version of the one pictured here, although mine is a much slimmer fit (I just couldn't find a good photo in under a minute). It's very simple and functional. If you can snag a cheap baracuta on ebay (usually around 100-150), you'll be getting a nice made-in-england jacket that comes with two zippers, meaning you can slightly unzip the bottom one while sitting, which gets rid of that weird poof that you get from being in that position.

I find that all of these go well together and I'm sure MFA agrees too. Keep in mind that these won't guarantee your drowning in pussy, but if you make sure to get clothes like these that are properly fitted, you might just find yourself waist deep.

Busy week ordering a few things:

Levis Trucker I have one already in Bleacher light but this is for fall

Slim cotton-cashmere grey sweater from J.Crew

Donegal Shawl sweater from J.Crew

Gap rich ginger 1969 pants

Dockers Alpha in Dark Pebble

Dockers modern in Grey and New British Khaki

I get the J.Crew stuff in tonight. :)

u/Willravel · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Interesting. Okay, I can work with that.

Chinos: $35.99

Dress shirt: $44

Blazer: $59-$149

Shoes are going to be damned tough. I'm not sure there's such a thing as a nice, inexpensive dress shoe, unless you're into second-hand like some folks on this subreddit. Asos is mentioned in the shoe FAQ, but even those might stretch your budget. Check your local JC Penny for Stafford Ashton wingtips on sale, maybe.

u/do_i_even_lift · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I personally love the J Crew Summerweight slims that I got at the outlet (they're pretty true to size, and I'm a 32x30 in chinos), as well as Docker's Alpha Slims -- I've got 2 pairs of these. If you want to up the ante a tad, Bonobos might be the way to go, and you kind find some decent ones on sale. Also check Grailed to see if you can cop some unwanted chinos on the cheap side -- I just scored some Apolis Chinos for around $20.

u/Unabomber007 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Where does the fault lie?

Did you drop your pants on the counter, pick up your ticket and deuce out? You = fault.

Did you drop your pants on the counter, say, "Look motherfucker...these are here for dry cleaning" and deuce out? Cleaners = fault.

Do know you will NOT be getting 5 x $125 back from the cleaners....you are lucky to clear $100 on this deal. What I'd do is invest in some pant stretchers...get them janks wet... install stretchers and let them dry to fix them. https://www.amazon.com/Pant-Stretcher-Heavy-Instant-Stretch/dp/B00AZNK1RO/ref=pd_bxgy_201_img_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Z6BTXD76W1GGH5PA86Y8

I have the same problem and here is what I have found:

  • Jeans - Levi's 513 fit much better than 511 at my normal size.
  • Docker's Alpha - I only have one pair, but it fits great at my normal size Slim Lightweight Twill
  • Banana Republic Aiden - I bought a pair at my normal size and it fits pretty tight. If I bought another pair, I would probably size up.
  • Gap Lived In Slim - I need to size up (31 vs. 30).
  • Express Jeans - I stick to a cold rinse Rocco slim straight that has a stretch fabric in it. It fits tight on the first wear after a wash, but because there is a stretch fabric isn't uncomfortable. Additionally, after about 2 full days of wear it stretches to the point where they fit pretty well. They don't taper as much as I'd like below the knee, but it's not terrible.

I'm still early on in finding that perfect pair without tailoring, but I hope this helps.

u/bustinya · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I'm the same. In width I'm kind of 31.5. I think the sizes are shown differently in e-bay, but I got them from Amazon here

I got one pair XL and another XXL. The XL is, if you could call it so, a 'slim' fit. It'd be perfect if it was a couple inches longer. The XXL is a lot more baggier and if you have things in your pockets with relative weight like your phone, wallet and keys then you might be having to pull them up at times. Nevertheless, they have a drawstring so you could just tie that up and I think it would do the job. I've never had to do that.

As for the purpose, well whenever I use them it's for everyday use. I've never tried them for jogging or any other physical activity but I have an itching feeling that they wouldn't get the job done so easily. I think the XL would be a bit tight and would end up rolling up my legs (which happens sometimes due to not being that long) and the XXL would sag too much.

For the price, I'm amazed they haven't ripped every time I finish using them. They're also pretty warm. The fit is nice due to the narrow leg opening. Some people are suggesting a size L for a waist 32 but honestly I don't think the waist is the problem, but the length. I'm 1.84 meters long (6 feet and a half inch) and I feel more comfortable with the XXL but I think the XL look better. I'm not that into skinny/slim fits but the XL would definitely be perfect if they were a bit longer (at least for me). The XXL fit considerably baggier now that I tried them back on.

Conclusion: XL might be your choice of size depending on your height. May be a bit short if you're even taller than me. Your decision also depends on if you're gonna use them for your couch days or to go out too (and exercise)

I hope this helps you make a decision! Some more reviews from amazon/ebay might help.

Be careful about H&M clothes, some of it is high quality, but some of it is really cheaply made. That button down looks a bit cheap to me personally and I would rather spend a bit more on a button down for formal occasions. but if you meant something geared for more semi-formal events then I think it works.

I really like Dockers Alpha khakis, which are cheaper on amazon. They basically run the same price as Levi's but sometimes can be cheaper and I think they look better. ive wore them to formal events and they look great. I just buy the same size as my Levi's 511s. the colors are pretty nice too. I have the colors new british khaki and steelhead (because school dress code fml)

If you go to cotton on, they have a lot of cheap clothes there. I buy cheap button downs from there and wear a shirt under them (not buttoned) to look more casual, but thats just me. I dont really mind sticking out that much. My school dress code is polos and khakis so i dont really have much off a choice.

  • J.Crew Montague Leather Weekender

I looked through previous MFA posts for weekend bags/duffels but loved the Montague as soon as I saw it..

  • Dockers Alpha Chinos - Khaki

Picked these up for casual weekend wear. They fit pretty slim on the thighs but they feel alright! I usually wear J.Crew's urban slim fit which fits me perfectly but I wanted to branch out and try the Alphas from MFA advice.

  • Brooks Brothers Milano Fit Plain-Front Non-Iron Advantage Chinos: Khaki & Tan

These feel even slimmer than the Dockers Alpha Chinos. I'm using these for more casual work days at the office during the summer months. Kinda hoping for something a tad roomier but don't want to wear parachute pants either.

    *****

What's Next? Saving up for some OSB Navy Suede Red Brick Trail Oxfords, looking around for some lightweight slim-fit (not as slim as the BB's Milano-Fit or Dockers Alpha fit) wool trousers for the office (ePaulet?), etc. I've looked around MFA but was wondering if ePaulet is where I should look?

I found the Volcom Frickin Modern chinos last summer and haven’t looked back since. They’re pretty affordable ($55) for pants that have lasted me a year of skating and wearing at least once a week. Also super soft and a nice fit that’s not skinny, but not baggy. It’s also hard for me to fit pants that fit me right because i’m a waist size 28, but these aren’t crazy long or too big. (i cuff my pants tho.) Volcom Chinos

Hello, I'm a fellow tenth grader who is very good with fashion, and I would love to help you!

You haven't really stated much of what you're interested in, so I'm just going to give you some basic links to help with a more preppy, mature style.

First and foremost, though, is that mop on your head. I had it, you have it, every guy has had it. It's time to let it go and cut it off. You'll thank me later.

For your tops, I recommend dropping the whole T-shirt/sweater everyday, and trying to stay away from graphic tees completely. I find that if you wear a simple pattern/solid colour shirt, you'll look a lot more clean and grown up. Not much else to be said, just see what you like, but keep it simple.

For jeans, dark denim is in style right now. Since you're a teenager like me, you'll probably want a slim fitting jean. Pac-Sun, H&M, Dockers, and Levi's have some of the best fits that you'll find for a reasonable price. If you want chinos (AKA Khakis), I recommend Dockers brand.

For shoes, since I almost exclusively wear Vans, my knowledge is limited. A general rule of thumb is to keep the sole of the shoe more on the thin side, make sure the tip of the shoe is more tapered/to a point, and the tongue of it isn't too big. Some examples are here, here, and here.

Here are some links of some of the things I mentioned, as they are a good point of reference. Another great place to look are all the sidebar links, namely the basic wardrobe.

Tops:

Old Navy Tees

Old Navy Button-Ups

H&M Tees

Forever 21 (Big selection of tops)

Bottoms:

Dockers Chinos (AKA Khakis)

Levi's 511 Denim Jeans

Pac-Sun Slim Jeans

Shoes:

Vans

The only link you provided that I approve of are the Sperry Top-Siders. I found the Ice to be very versatile and the solid black have recieved compliments as they aren't very common. Both versatile. Good with shorts and could even be formal enough for a summer wedding. Oatmeal, Sahara/Brown Buc Brown for a basic, well, brown.

For a watch I'll make a few personal suggestions. Of course, the Timex Easy Reader, Brown & Black. Bonus: Black face. This Seiko for a silver watch and I like this black Citizen Eco Drive as well.

Get some basic chino's in a good slim fit like the Dockers Alpha Khaki and some basic flat front shorts from Patagonia.

American Apparel for some staples. Cut down on your graphic tee's and get some plain stuff! I really like the Tri-Blend 50/25/25 Track Shirt for tee's, so comfortable. The black is actually a really dark grey, because of the nature of 'the blend', I really like it and it matches these dark grey twill plimsolls I have perfectly. They have great thin sweaters and cardigans too, browse what's available on Amazon, go on their website to see better images and what else they offer.

I don't mean to totally disregard your choices, I'm just showing you some items that I like, some good basics, and that's all I can muster before I head to bed.

Also, are you sure you're really a 32 inch waist at 6ft 150lbs?

Are they the khaki? Are they cuffed or have they got elastic in the bottom? Attached is the link I found for what I think is them. https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Essentials-Slim-Fit-Casual-Stretch/dp/B07BJL5TRT?th=1&psc=1

It may be a bit unorthodox, but my "suit" is comprised of Dockers D1s (matching the color of your coat, of course) and any well fitting suit coat. You can get the pants for ~$45, coat for ~$150-200. You could shell out more to get that coat well tailored. It looks much better than what any of my friends are wearing.

Yes, I know that the pants are technically khakis and not suit pants. They're all dress pants. No one will notice unless they grab your pants and feel them. You will look fashionable for a fraction of the price. Trust me on this. I've gotten a lot of compliments on my "suit." It is MUCH harder (and expensive) to find slim fit pants in a matching suit set. Just make sure that the inseam is the right length and you're fine.

Edit: These are Dockers D1's.. I'd go with the gray (fog) pair and find a matching coat. Get it tailored to look slim cut. You seem to have a very similar build to me so it should look good. Gray also might not look best with your shoes, so you could spend the ~$250 you have left on a new pair of shoes.
