You can upgrade your account to "preferred" by buying cartel coins or buying the $5 digital deluxe upgrade. This removes or eases a lot of restrictions. I wont lie, free accounts are horrifically gimped. Preferred accounts are what "free" should have been but I think the reason for the paywall is to combat spammers.

Anyone wanting to experience the full unrestricted game should try the Amazon Premium pack. It's 3 months of subscription time, 2400 cartel coins and a pet for $40, which is $5 less than the cost of 3 months subscription time and the amount of coins you'd get from a $20 pack, so the whole thing is worth about $65. You can only use the pack once per account. Everything else advertised for the pack is stuff everyone gets for subscribing their first time.

I'd recommend saving any cartel coins you have for legacy ("Y" shortcut Key -> "GLOBAL UNLOCKS" left side menu -> "Other" left side menu -> "Convenience" right side) unlocks, specifically rocket boost and improved mounting. Aside from that, unlocking inventory space (for the entire account, not just one character) is a good use for them. There's some other convenience legacy unlocks you might like, specifically Legacy Travel, but I only bought the first one since being subbed reduces the cooldown to 6 minutes which is maybe 30 seconds longer than you might spend on a NPC conversation in-between quick travels.

It's worth noting that subs get 500 cartel coins free each month and you can get 100 coins free each month regardless of whether you sub or not, by using their authenticator app. You can also get some coins for certain achievements. The easiest one to do is the one you get (20 coins each) for completing the starter planet for each of the 8 classes.

It'd be wise to look at cartel coins as being worth $0.01 USD each. So, if you pay 100 coins for an unlock, you effectively spent $1 on it. It helps put things in perspective, so you don't just waste them on some cosmetic junk or useless unlocks (some really are useless.) I mean, they have a lightsaber (all cartel gear has the same stats and provides no real benefit in combat by itself, you have to buy, with in-game credits, or craft mods to make them useful) that costs 5,700 coins, effectively $57 USD. I just can't see spending $57 on a cosmetic weapon but I'm sure some people do it. Sure, it's cool looking but it's just not worth that for most people. They'll also charge you probably around $4 or $5 in coins to unlock it for your entire account, since cartel items typically only unlock for the character that it was bound to, even though that adds it to your collection. They do like to nickel and dime cosmetics. That said, most unlocks can be bought with credits, instead of cartel coins. The problem is Free accounts have a credit cap of 200k and Preferred have a cap of 350k, so any unlock more expensive than that will require you to either be subbed or to spend cartel coins. Since, you can get 100 coins free each month, even on a Free account, it's still possible to get all of the unlocks without spending any money, eventually. You might have a really long wait trying to unlock everything at the rate of 100 coins a month though.

The biggest cartel coin pack you can normally buy is $40 for 5,500 coins but Amazon has a $100 pack for 14,500 coins, which is 750 more than you'd get buying 2.5 x $40 packs. So, it's not that big of a bargain compared to the $40 pack, which gives about 700 bonus coins compared to the $20 pack of 2400 coins. Ultimately, you shouldn't waste money on cartel coins directly. You're better off sticking to the free ones and the ones you get with a sub. The one exception would be maybe spending coins on a mount with "exceptional" resistance to being dismounted. Even then, it's probably best not to waste your money on it.

As a bit of a side note, you get a free pet when you buy cartel coin packs on Amazon but they look very much like the pet you get with their premium pack with the 3 months of sub time.

Finally, leveling up your legacy is super slow, since it's based off of a percentage of the exp you get. If you don't mind spoiling the story for yourself, you could use a lvl 65 boosted character to speed up leveling your legacy and as a quick way to get into higher level crafting, for profit. That said, expect some major spoilers, if you do. It's generally recommended that most people should avoid using boosted characters due to the way it makes a lot of story decisions for you but, if you know what you're getting into and want to anyways, it's your time to spend how you want.

It's generally recommended you either level a character to 60/65 before using a boost. The reason is because boosted characters don't count towards race or class story unlocks and you can't go back and complete them because they're auto-completed for you. There's 8 class stories, 4 for each faction, that you have to complete to unlock legendary status.

These are all the things I wished I'd known when I started.

Note that there are 2 Rift SKUs, one at #2 (with Touch) and the other at #4 (with xbox controller and Remote).

The same thing with the PSVR.

The HTC Vive has the unique advantage in sales rankings of having only 1 SKU.

Thus this data is useless, since we don't know whether #1 is more than #2 and #4 combined.

Another thing we can conclude is that neither Rift+Touch nor HTC Vive are currently selling anywhere near what Rift+Touch was selling during the $399 sale.

Both are beaten in the general VR category by even the Gear VR controller- and despite being split into 5 different SKUs, 2 of the Gear VR headset SKUs are outsellng both Rift+Touch and HTC Vive!

For comparison, Rift+Touch at $399 was at the #1 spot of that category for weeks, outselling even the Gear VR SKUs. In fact, it was even at the top of the consoles list for a while (meaning more people bought it than any Switch or PS4 or Xbox SKU).

Nah, you lose much more. This packaging loses the Xbone controller($39), Wireless Xbone Adapter ($20) (and USB extender), Oculus remote($29), and Rockband adapter($10?) while still at same price of $399. Maybe I'm just petty at getting extra goodies, but I'm glad I lucked out and got one of the original packages last week.

I thought the same as you. I bought the Amazon 3m sub (extra coins, cheaper than 3x 1m sub, etc) thinking the same way as you. I've been sub'd ever since. Ops are addictive... and once you have all the perks thinking of going back is cringy.

BEFORE

• If you don't have active toons but have done stories, there's not much prep you really need to do...
  
• You can plan out a bit as far as what you like goes; if you remember what roles/classes you enjoyed playing it would be a good start. The sub-exclusive content starts off fairly easy (groupfinder ops, easy uprisings, etc), but it's best to at least kinda know your class and have a main to do stuff on.
  
• put 1k cartel coins aside and don't use it. Since you'll be dropping server slots, etc, it will be wise to transfer one toon (with some starter credits, other useful items and so on) to the other NA server right before your sub dies to duplicate your legacy. More on this at the bottom.
  
• Join a guild that does events. Can do this once you sub, but it's not something that needs to wait, so~
  
• Download Teamspeak, Discord, and set them up. Some things benefit from voice comms, and adding a server is far quicker than having to download and set up stuff while people wait.
  
• You can also download/install starparse to see how you're doing. It's not really needed, but once you get good gear you might be interested in seeing where your DPS stands.
  
• If you plan to do groupfinder operations (esp if you're hoping to try some hard mode ones), it's a good idea to look up guides/vids just so you have a slightly better idea of what they're like. Not needed, but~
  
• Buy the starter strongholds. A week or two ago, DK was 6 credits, so I assume Coruscant is as well. Might as well buy them now and set up a bit.
  
  • Go to fleet and check out public strongholds; that will give you an idea on which you might like to buy/unlock once you have enough credits
    
• You can pass time by grinding heroics, etc for credits. Legacy bank (you get one once you have a SH and do a lvl 15 mission on fleet) lets you skip escrow as f2p, and escrow goes back into your wallet anyway once you sub.
  
• See if there are any 2x XP events or other things you might want to be sub'd for to maximize your time.
  
  
  ONCE YOU SUB
  
  
• Use a referral code once you are sub'd; this will let you keep all three crew skills when your sub runs out, extra week of sub time, etc. You might also get a few mil from someone.
  
• Try to get at least one person to use your referral code; it gives you a speeder that has a constant 110% speed, even at piloting 1 (all other are at 90% at that skill level).
  
• If you like certain races (sans togruta/cathar) you can make them for free, so DO so. Once these are leveled to 50 the race unlocks for free and you can use them on any new future toons (see last section for why this is important)
  
• For speed leveling, Get kicked to Yavin by a friend or kind stranger (for max effect, buy full exploration character perk + run a boost, then either start doing heroics or just grind mobs at [A Question of Motivation] (imp) to get to 70. Save story for later, though be sure to at least have your ship for toons you plan to do events on (summons requires ship).
  
• You want to get to 70 and start earning CXP, because that's where gear comes from, and you can only earn it while you're a sub. Save your tokens, save gold shells since those can be upgraded later (if you PvP).
  
• Do groupfinder operations.
  
  • They're sub-only, and they're fun as hell (even SM, at first)
    
  • They drop tier 2 gear, which you roll on (etiquette is 1/person unless stated otherwise, then greed on them)
    
  • You want to do Eternity Vault and Karagga's Palace at first. Stay away from pug Ravagers and Dread anything for a bit until you get used to them and hopefully catch good groups.
    
  • You want to have plenty of time to do them; since you'll be pugging assume 2h as a minimum window before you have to go. They usually take less with a good group, but you don't want to have to leave before finishing them
    
  • You can do each operation once per week per toon (per difficulty, but unless you really REALLY like them and are willing to put in a LOT of work you probably won't get to do the higher difficulties... maybe EV/KP), so stay away from "Last Boss lockout runs" or ask groups if they're doing full runs when you join. Once you kill a boss all previous ones auto-lock for you for that week.
    
  • SAY you are new, ASK when you don't understand and read/listen carefully. Many times people are more than willing to explain, but don't want to wipe 5x+ before asking if you're new. This also goes for flashpoints.
    
• Do uprisings (or at least try them); they're like mini flashpoints without cutscenes, etc. I personally dislike them, but SM ones are worth trying while you can.
  
• Grind heroics and work the GTN, ETC to make credits, and spend them on various stuff that's above f2p/pref credit cap
  
  • Unlock strongholds; buy the fun ones. I personally love NS the most, but YMMV
    
  • Unlock global perks in legacy for credits. Quick travel, rocket boost, mount while moving, etc are all great investments
    
• Try out various specs of classes, since they don't cost anything to swap around as a sub. You want to know what to leave toons at once it runs out.
  
• Buy/get legacy shells and augment them, then use those to gear. Ripping insides/augmenting is cheaper as a sub
  
  
  Right Before Sub Ends
  
  
• Decide which toons (if you made too many) you will be keeping active; get anything important off the others, put in cargo hold/legacy (inc all credits in the legacy bank)
  
• On mains check to make sure all outfits have the hide head on/off on various outfits; these will stay but lock when sub runs out, so any outfit slot with hide head will still have hide head, until you sub again. Make sure you leave a few with head showing in case you later make outfits you want helmets visible on, etc
  
• Pick one toon and transfer it to the other server. This will copy your legacy and global unlocks, race unlocks, etc.
  
  • Buy strongholds on that server. Once the base is bought, all the unlocks from the other server are auto-unlocked
    
  • Send this toon with money, etc. so you can jumpstart future toons.
    
  • This costs 1k cc atm, but saves you all those unlock costs and other achievements you've done.
    
• Make sure all but 350k are in your legacy bank, not on your character
  
• Pop all CXP packs and make sure all gear is done right/augmented/in legacy shells
  
• NOW buy any vanity items you want off the GTN
  
• Make sure all toons you want to play are in the right spec, etc.
  
• Double check that there's nothing you forgot to do/try out
  
  Once it ends
  
  
• Say "screw it" and renew the sub...

If it's about the controller, I'm sure there are adapters to USB for pretty much anything. SNES, NES, Playstation. Of course these are of varying quality since I just pulled the first thing I found, but it's not too hard to adapt the most nostalgic part of the hardware to work with modern equipment.

And with something like the NES/SNES classic, the rest of it is exactly like an emulator. No cartridges or anything, just a ROM library that you choose from. The UI for game selection is going to be marginally better than an emulator would be, but that's about it.

Just use an original SNES controller! Get one of these to convert it to USB. Been doing this for years, works amazingly!

So the two big ones are HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, those are the only two consumer VR headsets that really shine right now. Rift is having a crazy summer sale right now, $400 on Amazon, which gets you the headset, camera sensors, and hand controllers.

Personally, I have the HTC Vive due to some issues I have with Oculus's business platform. Namely, they're owned by Facebook and are trying to pull a console-esque exclusive games deal.

But, personal qualms aside, I can't really recommend the Vive for $800 over the Rift for $400. Especially if you're playing seat games like flight simulators, that's the much much better option right now.

It's the Xbox wireless adapter for Windows. Unfortunately the Elite controller, for all its features, does not support a Bluetooth connection (there are newer Xbox controllers that do and a new version is in the works that supports it). The play and charge kit does come with a really long cable so if the controller dies, I can plug it in and continue to charge it while playing.

As someone who owns the white and Dawn Shadow versions of this, I can tell you I used the Asus BT400, and it worked ok, but I was also only ever 2-3 feet away from it. Even then, I still had some small issues with it. I ended up sucking it up and buy the official Microsoft Xbox One Adapter for Windows. I've had zero issues since, and I highly suggest you just got for that, especially since it's only $19 right now, as opposed to it's normal $25.

Most players in Star Citizen have owned at one point, or currently own an Avenger because it is incredibly versatile for its price allowing you to do both combat and hauling stuff while not being paper thin. It's also the one I'd recommend the most for him. He can always use the CCU system to upgrade his ship to something else later once he has a better idea of what he wants to do.

It will be noticeably more combat capable than the Avenger Titan, but it doesn't have any cargo space. It is a very popular ship right now for combat pilots.

The Cutlass Black is larger than all the other mentioned ships and it's the first real offering that gives you decent multi-crew features. It has an interior you can walk around in with a couple beds (beds are used for logging off if you're out in space instead of at a station), It has a good sized cargo bay that's great for traders. It has a copilot seat which can be used by a second person to help manage shields etc..

It also comes with a turret for some extra firepower. It has plenty of teeth, and you can't really go wrong with it.

 

If he really ends up liking the game, he should look into picking up some flight hardware (Joysticks etc..). I'd recommend either the t16000m FCS HOTAS $130

You can also just buy a single t16000m joystick for around $60 and then buy a second one later. They can be flipped to lefty pretty easily, so don't feel like you need to buy two right away.

In terms of bang for buck, there is no contest compared to these in the budget arena. I personally fly with two sticks, some people prefer the stick plus throttle.

 

In closing, my personal advice would be to buy him the Mustang Alpha ($45) and the CCU to the Avenger Titan ($20), then tell him you'll contribute X dollars towards some flight hardware (Joystick/throttle etc) or further ship CCU's once he knows what he wants.

Lone Echo is a great game but only 6-8 hours only other game on your list i have played is Elite Dangerous i have about 800 hours into it, but the game is not for everyone. Watch some youtube before you buy it it can be hard to get into but once you get flying and the controllers down its a lot of fun. If you get ED i suggest a HOTAS this one will work good.

I have one, and love it. As far as lateral/vertical thrusters are concerned, there is an analog stick for your left hand pointer finger on the throttle that works great. The stick itself has HALL Effect sensors (same sensors as the very pricey Warthog stick) and is very accurate. It's mostly plastic of course, but at that price point it's a given. The stick buttons (on the base) are kind of useless in VR, but since you aren't running E:D in VR it isn't an issue.

The only real downside is the throttle lubricant from the factory is pretty garbage. I spent a few minutes taking the base off of the bottom and putting some Nyogel 767a lubricant and it has been perfect since.

I had a similiar issue, my old stick was naturally a little loose and hyper sensitive, so just resting my hand on it caused it to input roll because it was loose enough that the idle weight of my tiny little hands was moving it. This resulted in having to make the deadzones WAY bigger than I wanted them to be.

Also someone will more than likely eventually comment saying they own one of these devices and have had zero issues out of them, lucky them I hope they never have an issue, but Saitek is known for terrible Quality Control and with the exception of the X-52 buying a Saitek product is not worth the gamble even though Logitech now owns them and is known for great build quality, there are too many items from when Mad Catz owned them floating around in the wild.

The Thrustmaster T-1600FM might be around your budget if you can get it.

I would suggest adding a little more and getting the Saitek X52

But I have every button linked to a hot key so I can zoom in and out, make an edit, add a transition, jump to the next clip, delete, move up or down a track, copy, paste, in, out and many more useful hot keys all in one hand. I'm assuming you have a T.Flight HOTAS X, which is what I used to use. It's a good HOTAS for the simpler planes like the SU-25T, but you're going to have to get good at using modifiers, or make some concessions.

I'd highly recommend rebinding the slew controls for the TV to the 8 way you're using for trim, or create a modifier for it. DCS was not designed for large amounts of keyboard use, using the keyboard to move all your sensors is not advised.

The SU-25 is really as simple as it gets, the aircraft is not fully modelled. The full fidelity modules have the whole cockpit modelled, so all the switches and stuff actually work. I don't want to sound like a "gate keeper", more people getting into DCS is always a good thing, but DCS isn't easy, you need to know what you're in for. It's going to take a lot of time, you're not going to be good in a week, or even a month. Practise practise practise.

You don't specifically need a really good HOTAS for DCS, but it really helps. As waffle also said, don't put your keyboard behind your screen if you need to use it. If you want a good HOTAS recommendation the T.16000M is very good, I own pretty much all the modules, and it's been perfect for all of them.

HOTAS is great and fairly easy to learn, though I heard double joystick is better for control.

I see someone already mention DCS, but since you mention something to ease in to the world of flight sims, i wouldn't recommend it, at least for now. DCS is as hardocore sim as it gets for civilians.

Then you have FSX, a good compromise between realism/accessibility, though it is kind of a dead game that has no further development.

Another alternative is Take on Helicopters, from Bohemia Interactive, the makers of ARMA.
Decent flight model, lots of mission content that actually puts the flying to use, and comes at a great price. Only downside is it needs a PC with a very good processor to run smoothly.

ARMA3, i suppose is also an alternative, it uses the same flight model, got tons of choppers and has better performance nowadays cause its always being optimized (still needs good CPU though). It´s a military sandbox with much more to do than just flying (infantry, all sorts of vehicles, it's huge) and the flight model has 2 versions, easy, and advances (taken from take on helicopters), the sceneries (maps) are gorgeous and very detailed and i truly enjoy flying in it.

Personally I think it's a much better option than the X52, both in terms of build quality and precision.

Unless you're rich and just happy to splurge on whatever's the top of the line, just get a cheap one to start with. Most people start with the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X, which is cheap and plasticky but it has all the buttons you need and works absolutely fine. I have 1000+ hours in E:D and have never felt the need to upgrade from this HOTAS, though I'll probably get something better when it eventually breaks.

If you find you really like the HOTAS experience and feel like you want to dump some money into it, then you can get something like the Thrustmaster T 1600M or the Logitech X52.

And if you really like it and want to go higher end, there are a few options for that. Just be warned that they start to get real expensive.

It goes on sale more times a year than I can count. But you can also get the Elder Scrolls Anthology, it has EVERY Elder Scrolls from Arena to Skyrim and all DLC for Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.

It also comes with new and updated maps for Tamriel, High Rock/Hammerfell, Morrowind, Cryodill, and Skyrim (fair warning, this map isn't as good as the map that came with Skyrim, which was made with a thicker paper).

Honestly i used to do stuff like this all the time. But it still felt way too busy for me. So i bought a mouse with 12 buttons on the side as i play a lot of mmos. I also use OPie to further decrease the amount of keybinds I need for all the things I wanted to access relatively fast. On my OPie rings I also just use stuff I dont need in the middle of the combat, because using OPie in combat takes too long.

Now your question regarding movement: While holding W with my middle finger, I can easily press 1, 2 and Q with my ring finger. 3-6, which I usually dont need while moving forward, can still be accessed with the index finger easily enough.
While holding D with my index finger, I use my middle finger to press Q, E, R and 1-4.
While holding A with my ring finger, I use my middle finger to press Q, 1 and 2. I use my index finger for E, R, F and 3-6.
You will need to twist your wrist to reach certain keybinds while pressing others simultaneously, but this is really not a problem.

Also might be worth noting: F is also a utility keybind for me, not part of my damage rotation. F is my movement skill (disengage for Hunters, Blink for mages etc.) while Shift + F is my self-heal. C is just my move pet command.

Building the computer is as simple as building a lego set. It takes a couple hours to initially set up, but it only needs done once. After that, it's just as easy as pressing the home button on your xbox to launch steam big picture and choose your favorite game to play.

PCs will be more than a console upfront. You will spend more than $300 on a PC, but not much more unless you want to. If you factor in the price of a couple games and a year of XBOX live or PSN, PC is already cheaper.

They happen damn near constantly on PC. New game you want isn't on sale? No worries. Green Man Gaming has a 20% off coupon every month that can be applied to any game they have. Save yourself $12 right there without even needing a sale.

You don't have to upgrade any more frequently than you want. The consoles are on 2012 tech. Games will stay with that as a baseline until new consoles come out.

I'd recommend The Crusher as a baseline, then maybe asking over at /r/buildapc if you need help or want to make changes. I know you said you don't like PCMR, which is fine... The circlejerk gets old for us too... But there a ton of great communities on reddit for this. Maybe try /r/pcgaming as it's a bit more mature.

One thing I will say about PCMR is that they are most goddamn generous sub out there. Constantly giving away games, components, monitors, etc. and surprisingly helpful, but you do have to get past the kids and the circlejerk to see that.

The higher-end ones tend to be what's called a H.O.T.A.S (Hands On Throttle And Stick). essentially this is a packaged deal with a joystick and throttle quadrant, and is useful for not having to take your eyes (or hands) off the throttle and stick while flying. Some of these can be expensive like the Thrustmaster Warthog, considered the high end of the sticks. The issue with this as well, is it's modeled off a A-10 Warthog's inputs, so you'll also need to get rudder pedals as well since there is no Z-axis twist on the stick.
For more budget options, I have heard really great things about the T-16000 M. You can also buy the stick and throttle separately if you dont have the cash for both right now.

Another company is VKB, a Russian company but uses magnetic "MARS" sensors. I actually use their Black Mamba and love it, however the item has since been discontinued and the company itself is hard to get hold of. They currently have affordable sticks modeled on the German KG12 - flight stick used in BF109's and FW 190's (although no throttle quadrant with it). Available on Amazon its called Gladiator

Saitek makes several sticks, however they're in a transitioning period. They were just bought-out by Logitech and some people have complained about quality issues with their newer sticks and lack of customer support, so I'd only recommend them if you can get a great deal on a stick on sale, or possibly a used one for cheap. Their models are the X52 Pro, X-55, and X-65. I had the 52 Pro and never had any issues, but its one of those buy beware moments with them right now.

And then there's really affordable sticks that work fine too, such as the logitech extreme 3d pro and Thrustmaster T-Flight X. These are reliable sticks that lack some of the fancy things like buttons and dials for radiator management for example. I know guys who fly using these and love it.

Another thing that is highly recommended to get, but is not required to play the game, is called a Track IR. If you watch in my video, I'm swiveling my head back and forth to check my 6, and make sure theres no enemy aircraft diving on us. I'm not using the mouse, or any input to look around, rather I have a clip on my headset that uses IR sensors to turn my head in game without having to take my hands off the HOTAS. Here's a video of how it works. Again, not necessary to buy, but one of those things to hope to get down the road. There are free alternatives called Freetrack which uses a webcam, I think. I havent messed with that but I know a few guys who do use it and are happy with it.

Razer is a scam, IMO their products just don't hold up that well for the ridiculous price tag. Everything I've bought from them is now broken, and I won't buy anything else. It's all marketing. Personally, I prefer logitec but I decided for WoW I'd try just picking up a cheapo MMO mouse, and honestly so far it's been great. I've been using it for around a year, started on PServers, and had zero issues so far:

So I hate to have you start a new addiction ;) but the ladies and lads over at /r/mechanicalkeyboards have a plethora of different keyboards varying in price. The caps were gifted to me and originally black. This is a MagicForce 68 that I purchased used from a friend so I am not 100% on the MSRP this has MX Black on it.

both by Thrustmaster are a good combo and will only run you for about 200.
This guy did a pretty decent review on it.
Or you could do the TFRP pedals with the x-56 AND a trackIR included in the combo on amazon if you don't have one and it will run you just under 500.

The warthog stick and throttle and the TFRP pedals will put you right at 500 via amazon if you don't need trackir so there's that.

This would be the equivalent of on-screen controls for mobile games. They suck to use because there's no physical feedback, other than maybe some haptics. People who already have setups probably won't have any interest in it, and there's already a really good, relatively inexpensive option for a HOTAS, which is the Thrustmaster FCS. It isn't as cheap as I thought, but it's still less than $200. The only thing you're missing is some pedals, but they're not strictly required. Not being able to see the controls isn't really an issue, because all the buttons and hats are within finger's (or thumb's) reach. It's just more a matter of memorizing the layout of your custom keybinds.

Also, I don't know how it would be implemented, but it would probably have a significant performance impact if it is possible.

Options I recommend:

• The Thrustmaster T-flight HOTAS X - This is entry level HOTAS that goes for $40-50 USD. 12 buttons, an 8-way hat, twist stick, and rudder rocker. This tends to have the "a little short of controls" problem, as Elite has lots of stuff to bind, so you'll likely want to either use the keyboard for more buttons or set up a series of modifiers like this to fit everything on it. The HOTAS One and HOTAS 4 (for the Xbox and PS4, respectively, though both are also PC compatible) are slightly upgraded versions of this stick, with the same exterior, but improved internals tightening the deadzone and making them a bit more precise. They're usually more expensive than the X, but you might catch them on sale for cheaper occasionally. Note that this unit only uses 1 USB port, as the throttle and stick are connected to each other via a cable (about 20" long). This is something to keep in mind if you plan on mounting them to chair arms or something. I personally used this unit previously. It's a perfectly good setup, though I personally found the lack of buttons to be annoying after awhile. Note that the throttle has a detent at 50%, making it nicely suited to full range operation, with the detent separating forward and reverse.
  
• The Thrustmaster Stick X. This unit is basically the above, but without the throttle and the buttons transferred to the stick base along with a throttle slider. Rings in at a little cheaper.
  
• The Thrustmaster T16000M. This is a refreshed version of the classic T16000M, with minor exterior changes (reshaped hat, reshaped trigger, reshaped throttle, and tactile indicators on the base buttons). It's notable for being one of the rare ambidextrous sticks (you just swap out a couple parts to switch it) Unlike the X (which uses potentiometers), this unit uses contactless hall effect sensors, giving it very smooth motion with excellent precision. 16 buttons, an 8-way hat, twist stick and throttle slider. More buttons available than the X. The stick by itself rings in at about the same price as the HOTAS X.
  
  Moving up, there's the Thrustmaster T16000M FCS HOTAS. This is the above T16000M stick along with Thrustmaster's new TWCS throttle. Totalling them up, you get 19 buttons, two 8-way hats, two 4-way hats, a two-way switch, an analog stick, throttle slider, rudder rocker, and an analog dial, which is plenty of room for all the stuff you need (note that the throttle has no detent, so you'll probably want to run it forward only with a button assigned to reverse). This is what I personally use and I quite like it. Note that all the components of this set are available separately and can function independently (each needs its own USB port, so you might want to buy a hub with these). So you could buy the stick today and the throttle next month. Or buy the throttle and some other stick or buy two sticks, or whatever. There's also a set of pedals available if that's your jam.
  
  As for the money making, there are basically 3 options.
  
  
• Core mining for void opals - See CMDR Madprophet's mining guide and/or Yekbot's visual guide to core mining for information on this.
  
• Hotspot laser mining for painite or low temperature diamonds - See this video for information on that. Method is identical for both, only difference is what location you go to.
  
• Robigo passenger missions - See this video for information on that.

Otherwise, you'll need several layers of modifier binds.

Sounds like you're very new to the sub. The logitech products do their job, and personally their support has been amazing. But there are a few negatives that breaks the deal for the community in general here.

1. Proprietary switches that aren't compatible to anything in the market
   
   The community generates insane amount of custom keycaps and switches and boards, but what Logitech offers does not fit anything that was in place already in our community.
   
   
2. Low quality keycaps and lack of choice
   
   If the keycaps and switches are proprietary, the options should also be solid. The keycaps are very simply made to shine light through for the RGB, and there aren't high quality options.
   
   
3. Switches are supposed to be tactile but they're barely tactile.
   It's up to the people who use them, but large chunk of the community do not like them, and that's after comparing numerous other switches from cherry, gateron, Kailh and etc.
   
   There are many other options out there that cost just as much or even less that are higher quality, like CM Masterkeys if you're looking for a full sized one.

The TK version is already out. It's called the MasterKeys L. I'm very surprised because I'm not sure how OP got his hands on a TKL cause I didn't think they had been released yet. TK Version

Great idea to have a hobby with your son!

1. Coolermaster masterkeys Pro S RGB would probably be a good candidate for a first entry to the hobby. It is a pretty good quality board, and it has a standard layout, which means you can easily swap out keycaps without having to worry about special keysizes. It also has RGB, which i'm certain your son will find fun to play with as well. I just included a link to Amazon, but if you search a bit more i'm sure you could find a better deal.
   
   
2. As for keycaps you have a lot of choices in every pricerange. If you are looking for something specific, i suggest /r/mechmarket. Almost always someone is willing to sell you what you are looking for, for a reasonable price.
   
   Alternatively you could look at something like WASDkeyboards. They have a service, where you can make your own keyset, and have them make it. The quality is not the best, but i'm sure your son would appreciate being able to create something, and see his creation on his own keyboard.
   
   As for higher end options, i'm not sure how relevant they are for you, but you can look into GMK and Signature Plastics keycaps, which are available through a ton of websites like www.originativeco.com, www.pimpmykeyboard.com, www.massdrop.com and the list goes on. If you want i can give you a ton of more links in a PM.
   
   
3. Building a keyboard, is a good way to go deeper into the hobby, and i'm sure it would be a fun project. I suggest you take a good look at winkeyless' website. It's a store that sells keyboards in kit form, and they have pretty nice stuff. It's more expensive than a prebuilt like the Coolermaster, but that is just how it goes in this hobby.
   
   As for building the board, that is a whole topic in it self, and i suggest you start with the first point in your post, and move on from there. Learning about everything is part of the experience IMO.

If you want a clicky keyboard you'll want one with MX Blues or one of its many clones.

I would avoid Corsair if possible, they are quite poor value for what you get and you will have difficulty swapping the keycaps in the future due to a non-standard bottom row.

Take a look at the Cooler Master Masterkeys series of keyboards.

They are comparable to the Corsair but better built and better value and more open-ended when it comes to customization.

Just choose the layout you want (full size, TKL, etc) and choose "MX Blue (clicky)" and you're good to go.

You can check out the Cooler Master Masterkeys Pro RGB series (full-size or TKL). Most people here would recommend those over Razer/Corsair/Logitech. You can also check out keyboards by Ducky or iKBC.

Here's a build I put together for you. This thing will destroy any game at ultra settings 1080p @ 60 FPS! You won't have to overclock if you don't want to, however it is pretty easy to do with Ryzen! You're going to want to set your RAM to run at the highest speed it possibly can without crashing though to get the best performance!

I went with raw performance over RGB and LEDs.

You have a TON of storage with this build. You'll have a 128 GB SSD for Windows which will make it boot and run incredibly fast. You can also store commonly used programs on here and a game or two that has long loading times. For all your other games and media, you have a 2 TB HDD!

Regarding your question about running the second screen, it should have negligible performance impact unless you plan on doing something intensive on it like rendering a video, playing another game, or something along those lines (aka browsing the internet on a separate screen won't impact you at all).

You can use a TV with this, however, TVs have different display properties when compared to a typical computer monitor. I'm not super knowledgeable on this topic, but I do know that TVs have lower refresh rates (around 25 Hz) that use different technology to blend frames together to make it appear like smooth transitions from frame to frame (if I'm wrong hopefully someone can correct me, although I'm pretty sure that's how it works). Also, TVs have much higher input lag. So playing competitive games on a TV will put you at a significant disadvantage. Long story short, you can totally game on your TV, it won't be AS enjoyable as on a normal monitor though.

With regards to you question about the controller, you can buy a USB adapter that you can use to connect your controller to. Just bought the controller/wireless adapter/play and charge kit from bestbuy for instant gratification. The BT hasn't been reliable but that's probably an issue with my wifi/BT on MB as I never even connected the antenna until today to try out the BT. Got it to work fine then it stopped working, rinse repeat until I just went ahead and connected the wireless adapter and everything works fine with it. Maybe Ill mess with BT again by I got the wireless adapter so that I can use a headset connected to the conntroller while gaming from the couch.

I got that for my brother because I love him more than he loves me and he seems to like it. However they did some software/firmware upgrades on it that apparently limited customisability.

Getting a proper Hotas will make ED much much better even in non VR mode.

I've heard mixed things about saitek hotas'. While they look and feel really good, I hear they break pretty easily and saitek customer service is shitty AFAIK.

It was designed with elite dangerous in mind, I think they collaborated with Frontier.
This is what I have and it's fantastic for elite dangerous. They button layout on the throttle is really smart, although the lack of buttons on the stick itself is slightly annoying. In Canada it was cheaper than the x52 by $50 and I couldn't be happier with it.

There are new low-profile switches that came out recently from Cherry and Kailh, and they sound like what you want. There isn't a lot of board selection yet though. If you can tolerate the noise of blue switches, I think you'd like this one for $50:

I'm using a Noppoo Choc Mini with 35g Gateron Clears, and that sounds like another option. Super light switches (the lightest you can buy), no scratchiness at all, but the keycaps are a bit tall compared to chiclets. It's about $60, I tried finding a link for that one but it looks like Newegg is out of stock now.

By the way, there are lots of people who feel similarly about chiclets. I type fast (~130wpm) and play Starcraft 2 competitively, and haven't found anything that works as well for me as an old ThinkPad membrane keyboard, despite a tour of mech keyboards. Am hoping these low profile switches will work for me, but blues are too noisy.

If you just want to play Elite Dangerous/StarCitizen, just pick up the Oculus Rift. It's cheaper, and the different trade offs won't matter as much since you will be using it seated. You'll likely enjoy the room scale stuff too though, but at least the buy in is much lower at $400 in case you don't care for it. The price will be going up soon.

To expand on what the other commenter has said, both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift have had a fairly significant price drop over the last couple of months.

The Vive now sits at a much more reasonable price of $599usd while the Oculus Rift sits at $399 although it's strongly recommended that you purchase a 3rd camera sensor for $60 with it to improve the tracking potential. Both come with tracked controller solutions, the Vive with it's wand style and the Rift with Touch.

 

Personally, I feel that the Vive is a better buy, considering several factors so I'm a bit biased.


-The Rift needs a 3rd sensor which lessens the price gap a fair amount, and takes up a whopping 4 USB 3.0 ports while the Vive uses only a single USB 2.0 port because of the Lighthouse tracking versus the Rift's camera based solution

-They both work for room-scale games, but the Vive is more purpose built for it because of the way tracking works

-This is pretty subjective but I prefer the Vive's display and optics. Neither are objectively better but I like the Vive's slightly larger field of view compared to the Rift's slightly better readability with text

-Vive is much better if you have glasses.

-This is purely subjective, but the Vive has nothing to do with Facebook. To me that's a major plus, but you might not care as much.

 

As much as I adore my Vive, the Rift has several advantages too

-First, it's outright cheaper, regardless of having to buy the 3rd sensor

-The controllers feel more natural in the hand when you're playing games where you have hands instead of tools (Vive is better if you're playing a shooter for example as the controllers feel like you're holding something like that)

-The Rift has a built in pair of headphones which are actually quite good, and light weight. I didn't think this was a huge deal at first since I have good headphones already, but not having to worry about that extra cable dangling from your head is a nice luxury to have

-The Rift's stock head strap is much nicer, and general ergonomics are better. The Vive has an upgraded Deluxe Audio Strap that you can buy now, but it's a hundred bucks.

-Access to a bunch of free Oculus funded games through Home. The Vive can play these too, but you have to use a middleware program called ReVive for it to work.

 


To finish off this wall of text, some minimum recommended PC spec's:

-At least an i5 from the 4000 series of chips (IE i5 4590 is what Oculus used to recommend as a minimum) or 3000 series if you can overclock (I have an OC'd i7 3770k at 4.6 ghz and it's working great) EDIT: Also a Ryzen r5 1500 or better would work. Gotta rep team Red!

-Standard gaming amount of RAM, 8-16GB

-Modern mid-range graphics card like an RX 480/580, or a GTX 1060 6GB, or a higher end older card like a GTX 970 or R9 380x (this would be cutting it close)

I wouldn't recommend using anything older than that, any kind of stutter can and will make you ill. Trust me, sim sickness is no fun haha

A joystick is ideal for this. I use this joystick and throttle combo (there are better ones out there, like the T1600M). A lot of people use dual joysticks or joystick and keyboard. There are a lot of controls so you need a lot of buttons, but if you're doing joystick and keyboard you should have plenty even if your stick is light on buttons.

Lol, that’s the million dollar question. I’m not sure what your budget is but I seem to think I’ve heard good things about the Thrustmaster T1600 stick and throttle T1600 Amazon. I hope that link works but it looks like the stick and throttle are $129 for the pair and that seems like a good deal to me but I got my setup a few years ago so not sure about the pricing and deals that they have now. My setup is also a Thrustmaster but it’s the Warthog Hotas which is a bit higher on the price scale but I’ve been happy with the brand. I hope this helps a bit.

The Thrustmaster 16000M, either by itself, as a hotas, or as a hosas is regarded as a good entry level stick by many.

edit: best way to make credits in-game by far is mining, either surface mining for painite or core mining for void opals. Easily 100m/hr or more if you know what you're doing, and/or follow one of the many guides on youtube. I can't personally advise though as I've been actively avoiding it. I don't want to be rich so quick I have no idea what to do with it.

Thrustmaster T16000M FCS Joystick if you're REALLY pressed for space. Otherwise, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS Controller, which includes the HOTAS half of the setup. I think it's easily the best setup for the money.

Time for the render node! You only really need a processor and stuff that fits with it. I went barebones with this, and stuffed it all into the smallest case I could while leaving breathing room for cooling. You can stack these on top of each other. Better yet, buy an IKEA drawer set and put them in drawers. Remember to carve out the back to allow for air to escape and to manage cables. Voila! Your own render farm, nicely tucked next to your desk.

RECOMMENDED PERIPHERALS

For video editing, gaming, and general use, I recommend the following monitor because it isn't glossy (fuck glare!), is LED-backlit, has IPS technology for amazing viewing angles and color reproduction, is HDMI-compatible, 1080p, has a fast response time (5 ms), and is relatively affordable (about $160 USD street.)

If you want headphones, check these out. They're great middle-range headphones that are good for music, gaming, and other general use.

If you're doing audio work, I recommend using monitors for accurate sound-reproduction and to avoid coloring your mixes. A ton of people I know swear by these. Remember to treat your room! There are great tips and guides for all genres of music over at r/edmproduction. Don't let the name fool you; they have some great stuff for everyone.

In terms of mice, any will do; I personally recommend this one, though.

In terms of keyboards, use whatever you're comfortable with. I know a lot of people swear by mechanical keyboards, especially keyboards that have CherryMX keys. I personally hate them because I'm far more accurate with chiclet keyboards. However, I plan to change my key caps to some that are shallower/need to be pressed harder to register (I currently have Cherry MX Reds, want to switch to Browns). The great thing about mechanical keyboards is that they are customizable! If you are used to Apple Keyboards, this keyboard should provide a good balance between the feel of chiclet keys and that of a mechanical keyboard.

If you're balking at these prices, you're not alone. Unfortunately, quality products mean shelling out hard-earned moolah. If you can afford it and think it will be valuable to you, I think these products should work well for their intended purposes and have good quality. I have personally used all of these products. Of course, don't take my word for it; look around r/buildapc, r/headphones, and r/edmproduction for more recommendations.

At that price range, you are really better to buy new, as most any decent keyboard will be more than $50 used, and I would not trust any budget keyboard that was on the used market. And at $50, forget about RGB.

We highly recommend dropping the number pad and using a TKL or smaller keyboard. You are literally hurting yourself by using a fullsize if you are a right handed mouse user. Either you are putting undo strain on your shoulder by reaching far out to the right, or undo strain on your wrist my shifting your typing area to the left.

If you still want a fullsize in spite of our recommendations, then an Eagletec is probably the best option.

A Redragon, Tomoko, or Magicforce are probably the best in your price range. I would recommend the Magicforce over the others.

Not a fix for not being able to switch the in game model to a lefty, but Thrustmaster makes a hotas setup that has a fully ambidextrous flight stick, comes with all the parts to convert it to left handed mode.

It's a cheap(er) HOTAS, it's biggest upside is a lot of inputs, if you're looking for something that will guarantee to last a long time I wouldn't look at a recent Saitek/Madcatz as a first choice. IMO the throttle is a much nicer unit than the stick and worth hanging on to. The stick layout is okay, my only gripe is the shape of the hats, and unless you have large hands it's a stretch from the base resting position to the top switches, if that base was a half-inch or so higher it would be a lot better.

I have one, and I really like it, I've had it for since mid 2014 and I haven't experienced any failures. I guess I'm lucky, but you get what you pay for for things like this. In fairness, Hotasessesse's across the board have much higher failure rates than any other peripheral input device such as mice and simple sticks like a Logitech Attack-3/5. CH and TM products aren't flawless, but they are better built and more consistent, worth spending the money on if you have it.

However, with the changeover in the parent company (MC -> Logitech) I would keep an eye on them. If you need something right-the-f***-now without spending much, a Thrustmaster T1600M FCS kit just came out as TM's answer to a proper budget hotas, and the reviews are good so far. Just keep in mind that it's built to fit a low cost so don't expect a lot of metal.

So you'll need a few things for the game, first is a decent computer. Second is the actual VR bundle, I would suggest either the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift. There's a lot of good discussion on which one to get on various subreddits, /r/Vive, /r/oculus and /r/virtualreality.

You know, you could just pick up a wireless adapter for your PC so you can use your Xbox controller wirelessly, hook up your PC to your TV so you can play it on the big screen and just play it from bed on PC with your controller. It seems expensive but you can cut the cost in a few ways.

First, this build is more powerful than your xbox. If you want to use a controller you just need to get an xbox one controller receiver for computer.

Second cost cutter. If you have any parts around your house, let me know. I can work those into the current game.

Third, you can replace the windows OS with a linux build. Linux is a free operating system that just happens to work with ck2. It does not work with much else.

Fourth, the graphics card is optional if you really only want to do ck2 and other simple games on this machine. However, keeping this card will ensure you can play many games on this and they will look better than on the xbone.

Yeah you arent gonna get rgb or name-brand switches but its still mechanical and really good for the price.

The Redragon K552 is a great value for it's price and it is backlit.

In general, Das, for some reason or another, tend to be a little high-priced for the quality of the board. They're not bad, but you can find better for simliar pricing.

That particular Das you linked to uses some off-brand switch instead of Cherry or Gateron (Cherry is the original that they all copy, Gateron makes a well respected and popular clone).

For example, this Cooler Master Masterkeys L is cheaper, uses Cherry switches and has programmable white backlighting. And this Cooler Master Masterkeys L is only a little more expensive, uses Cherry switches and has programmable RGB lighting.

And Form Factor (from your other post) describes the physical size and layout of a keyboard. Full/100% is your standard keyboard. TKL is the next step smaller, and cuts off the numberpad. 60% is when you take a TKL and chop off the Arrow/Navigation keys and the F1-12 row, leaving just the alphanumeric characters and the surrounding modifiers.

Those are about the three most common form factors, but there are others as well (40% for those looking for something really portable and compact. 65% for those who want a 60% but can't live without the arrow keys.).

Personally I would avoid Corsair if you are spending over $100 it just isn't worth the investment. Most of their keyboards also have non-standard rows so you wouldn't be able to replace the keycaps later down the road if you wanted to.

For the average gamer I recommend stuff from Coolermaster, Filco, and Ducky.

I still don't understand the whole "tenkeyless" thing - why have inverted T arrow keys that take up the same amount of space as a full numpad? A full numpad is far more useful - especially for gaming.

I'm using the utech venus I bought on a whim as a cheap knock off Logitech G600.

Love it! But when I replace it I'll spend the extra for Logitech. Utech doesn't have full support on OSX so if you want to update any of your short cut buttons you have to use a PC. Once updated they transfer... but you know the whole command vs control doing different things in your software on the different operating systems. You can get a work-around for a bunch but not all.

The 12 buttons on the side are over kill. I'd prefer 6 bigger ones that'd I'd be more accurate with, but it's a pretty minor complaint for this mouse saving me literally 30+ mins a day of repetitive keystrokes... oh god zooming in and out of the timeline in Media Composer is just a thumb click

I took a chance on this $30 dollar mouse and I will have to say it is completely worth 30 dollars. I've used and abused it for close to 2 years now and the only actual complaint I have for it is the fact that it only has one mouse button near the left click instead of the two that the naga has. I got used to it but really for $30 I really can't complain a whole lot.

You know, I actually bought this same exact keyboard about 2 months ago and I love it. It's the first mechanical keyboard that I've bought and although I didn't look closely enough at it on Amazon and I bought one without a number pad, I still don't regret it. It's not a major mouse brand, which might instantly turn off a lot of people. However, it's highly programmable, has all of the bells and whistles of an $80 mouse, feels incredibly durable and is not made from flimsy stuff, and the software is utterly amazingly easy to key bind anything you'd like to any button on the mouse, including customizing the DPI. [The DPI buttons can even be re-assigned, with no restrictions.] It's very simple and lightweight, too; it's very good at what it does without any bloat.

The light color change sounds like a gimmick but since you can assign a different color and glow pattern to each profile (which takes about 2 seconds to swap), it helps you easily ID what is loaded onto the mouse.

The drivers are flawless and the button layout is very good; after day 2 with the mouse, I never hit the side buttons on accident thanks to their design.

Long story short, I've had high end expensive mice for many, many years and this is easily the best mouse I've owned in a while. Very sturdy, reliable, and considerably more customizable than the more well known multi-button mice. With 5 customizable DPI levels, it's perfect for MechWarrior, as well.

And all this for the price of a cheap "new computer" freebie-quality mouse. I really recommend this thing. If you're willing to consider a smaller hardware manufacturer, you'll way more than get your money's worth.. doubly so since you get all this for under forty bucks.

ED: The side buttons work very well for MW:O, from strikes to UAVs to coolant, it's nice to have it all on the same location.

ED2: Because of the above I've taken to not customizing games I play all the time, but customizing the mouse to the game. That was doubly nice in Star Citizen since it lacks key binds right now.

If you've got Halo Combat Evolved on PC, you can download Halo CE (that's custom edition) for free here. CE allows for more flexibility with regards to online play (custom maps, some of which have been modded) but lacks single player (although there are modded multilayer maps built for single-player use), which is made up by the Combat Evolved install.

Also remember to download the 1.0.10 patch before attempting to connect to the internet otherwise you won't be able to find any servers!

As for the Combat Evolved game, there are several ways to obtain a copy one of which is though Amazon. There are probably some other vendors selling it for cheaper but I don't know which would be best for you so I suggest you take a look yourself. Remember to keep a copy of your Combat Evolved product key as you will need it in order to instal CE.

There are, of course, other ways to obtain Combat Evolved, but I don't recommend it.

Local gamestop problably wont have it but whatever. After you but this you install it on ure PC and you will be able to play ONLINE through whats called Windows Vista Games. This runs through the xbox live network. You WILL be able to play online against anyone just like you were playing it on your xbox years ago. You can setup a new gamertag or you can link it to your xbox live one if you already have. You can see your friends online and they will see u online(playing halo 2 PC) You DONT need an xbox live gold membership for online play. There are NO ranking systems or playlists, just custom games, usually only FFAs on lockout or midship. Its still fun though. As far as local mulitplayer(splitscreen) i havent tried it but im 90% sure it will work fine.

Here's the one I bought off amazon. It works great but it's the og japanese version that has a shorter cord than the US version. So you may want to get a usb extension cable if your planning on playing very far from from your pc. I use a mayflash adapter to connect it to my pc and it's automatically recognized by most platformer type games I play like super meat boy, super house of dead ninjas, and electronic super joy.

Oh I agree that they don't need a smaller keyboard. I have just found that it is more comfortable to use one.

I am typical person who hates change and defended using a full size KB for a long time, and after moving to a TKL I wish I had done it years earlier.

I have a USB numpad (can't live without it) and everything is just fine.

I've been wanting a Quickfire TK since I first saw them. Just one key wider than a TKL but has a full numpad.

Probably better to upgrade something else using that card. Or sell it so you have that $50 to spend elsewhere. There are budget friendly options out there that would easily be recommended, but none of them are at Best Buy.

Razer makes some nice mice, but their mechanical keyboards are some of the worst I've ever seen. Only Logitech makes worse mechanical keyboards, in my opinion.

Anyhoo, do you happen to know what kind of switches your boyfriend likes? If not and if he's never owned a mechanical keyboard before, then you should play it safe and stick to something with a brown switch. Do you know what size keyboard he wants? If he wants something compact, then I recommend the Magicforce 68. Stupid name, I know, but the build quality is superb for the price. If you're willing to wait for Black Friday, there will be a 50% sale on the Glorious Modular Keyboard. It's one of the most readily customizable keyboards on the market.

Most of the $100-$200 yokes just aren't that good, and you'll end up being frustrated with it. And you won't have any issues transferring stick/hotas in a sim to a yoke in plane.

Head tracking is an advantage, but not a must (I do fine without it). Get yourself an entry level HOTAS such as the thrustmaster t.16000m fcs.

This will give you more than enough money for an entry level module. I'd recommend the non-clicky-cockpit Flaming Cliffs 3 pack and/or a simple clicky-pit plane like the F-5E Tiger II

Be aware that even though Brown Switches are quiet in the Mechanical Keyboard world, they are quite a bit louder to type on with the Magicforce than your usual rubber keyboard! :)

Your cheapest option would be the Thrustmaster T-Flight. In your price range the Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS would be a good option.

I myself use the throttle (TWCS) of the T-16000M FCS together with a Cobra M5 because I don't like that the T.16000 stick has a lot of buttons on its base, which is annoying to me/of no use in battle. But since you are in the USA (I guess, if your budget is in $) that is not really a option for you since the Cobra M5 is a europe/russian thing it costs much more in the states than here (I got mine for sub 50$, then it is worth it).

For a higher budget the x56 Rhino can be a good option, though the quality can be questionable.

You're likely to see a lot of recommendations for the X52 and X55 but I wouldn't really recommend them, for the price they're very plasticky, and have too high of a failure rate.

Broadly speaking- A 4th Gen Intel i5 or better for the CPU. GTX 1060 or better for your Graphics. 16GB of RAM, and a Solid State Drive for storing the game on. DCS has some long loading times, and the SSD will cut them down as much as possible. For VR, the Graphics Card will manage but I recommend a GTX 1070 or above.

One problem you'll have getting a gaming PC right now is that RAM and Graphics Cards are both in short supply and supply. As such their prices have gone up quite a bit. Graphics cards doubling in price in some cases. While I would typically recommend building your own PC due to price and quality reasons, a prebuilt PC may actually be cheaper now. Make sure you ask around, both with your friend and on here before you buy one. We'll set you straight.

Personally I think VR is absolutely worth it. I've had my Oculus Rift for nearly a year now and have put a few hundred hours into DCS with it. You can usually demo VR units in places like Fry's Electronics or other such shops. Sometimes even Best Buy. Give it a try some time. VR will come with everything you need out of the box. Except the Computer, of course.

As far as other stuff, you'll need a Flight Stick and Throttle (HOTAS). I typically recommend the Thrustmaster T.16000M as a starter all-round HOTAS. It's built well, has a lot of buttons, and is precise. You could get something lower-end, but I wouldn't recommend it. If you have something particular you want to fly, other HOTAS sets might be better suited, but the T.16000M will do anything well.

Pedals are helpful but not really something I would urge you get unless you're planning on flying Helicopters. Especially the Huey. You need a good Rudder input to tame it. If I had to recommend a set for the average user it'd probably be the CH Pro Pedals Get them used though. Trust me when I say this- CH kit are built like tanks. Get them second hand from a good Ebay seller and pocket the extra cash.

If you end up deciding to go without VR, then you will need a headtracker of some sort. They work by using a camera and some software to track the position of some Infrared LEDs attached to a hat or headset, then translate that into an input in game. This lets you look around your cockpit. That may not sound like much but it's a game changer. The official product is called TrackIR5. I don't recommend you get this. While it is the easiest to set up and is perfectly good quality, it is vastly overpriced. Trackhat or Delanclip make good products. Pair that with this camera and you're good to go.

I know that's a lot of info but DCS can be a little daunting to get into, especially if you're not already versed in PC gaming. Hopefully this helped and if you have any questions feel free to PM me :)

I'm using the T16000M and it has been great for the price. I find it fairly comfortable and there are lots of button options for various things.

That said, mine has had some build quality issues (which some googling has shown me is not terribly uncommon), and I have disassembled both the stick and throttle recently to unpinch wires and reset pots that have become misaligned. It can also do with a serious re-greasing right out of the box with a high quality grease, but that might just be me being picky.

I'm not sure what is the current "best" is, but this is a great budget set up. It feels well built and is a pleasure to use. I believe this was developed with Elite in mind but should work fine with other games as well.

I'm not really sure what they're using. It honestly might even be bespoke controllers made from parts of the actual aircraft they're training for.

On the consumer side though there's several options depending on your budget. Just make sure what you choose also has a throttle as HOTAS is something I would consider a requirement for DCS.

If you're just starting out or if your budget isn't that great then in my opinion the best bang for your buck is a Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS.

The joystick is arguably the most accurate in its price range and uses HallEffect sensors which won't degrade over time like potentiometers. It's also versatile since it's also great for space games if you decide realistic flight sims aren't for you. The throttle has an analog thumbstick for newtonian physics and there's a matching left handed stick if you want to go for a HOSAS setup instead.

If you want something more substantial and plan on flying the A10C a lot then the Thrustmaster Warthog might be for you. It's more expensive but also made from all metal and is a near exact replica of the actual flight controls.

Just be aware that it doesn't have any twist stick functionality so you'll also need rudder pedals to make the most of this setup.

If you don't care what it looks like and want something in the midrange that will last forever the CH Products Fighterstick and throttle are made by a company that mainly makes joysticks for real world heavy machinery.

They know how to make something that can take a beating and keep on ticking. My only complaint is the design hasn't changed since the 90s when it was first introduced. It still uses pots instead of HallEffect, has a lower resolution, and frankly looks a bit dated to me.

Personally I use the VPC MongoosT-50 base from Virpil. It's more modular and tunable than the other options. You can completely swap out the internal camber depending on if you want a hard center, something softer, or even none at all. You can also change the tension of the springs without having to mod it as well.

The best part though is the different grips. The main grip they offer is modeled after Russian aircraft but if I'm flying something else I can just swap it out. When I want to run CAS in an A10C I bought a separate grip from the Thrustmaster Warthog and it just screws right on to the VPC base.

You're going to need rudder pedals if you go that route though, so I'd advise against it as it's got quite a premium to pay.

Glad you're enjoying the hobby, and hopefully you can expand to a stick soon and get even better. No pressure to get one if you're fine with the controller, but it can totally enhance your experience.

There aren't a lot of cheap HOTAS options. Some things to consider:

• T-Flight HOTAS X is relatively cheap at $50, but has relatively few buttons to work with and mediocre sensors that can make fine aiming difficult. A lot of people use it and are very happy with it though.
  
• T.16000M FCS is the next step up, and although it's fairly new it seems to be getting a pretty good reception. It's over your budget at $129 though.
  
• Dual joysticks is another totally viable and fun way to play, although it may take a bit more work to find a way to control all thrusters that feels natural (some people use twist for forward/reverse, some add rudder pedals, etc). There are obviously lots of possible combinations, one that works for your budget is a T-16000m combined with a Logitech Extreme 3d pro, for $95 combined.
  
  

I don't wanna upset you. Unfortunately yes, you can't use your Rift controllers to control throttle/stick in DCS at the moment (not sure about future). But give it a try with a cheap HOTAS and it is a blast for sure.

Personally I don't think a HOTAS is required, but it is certainly more immersive and you do tend to get more granular control of your ship versus a keyboard.

Some of the higher level players swear by kb+m for pvp and combat. They play flat, but it is what it is considering. If you can get used to kb+m or controller, you'll be fine.

The Extreme 3D Pro is a very entry-level stick. It will get the job done, but you need to know that you'll be replacing it in a couple years or less if you use it heavily. It's plastic-on-plastic and wears pretty fast, and it's not got the greatest precision to begin with.

The T16000M is a better entry-level stick, being both more precise and better able to stand up to wear over time.

If you can convince your dad to spring for something slightly more expensive, the T16000M HOTAS package gives you a throttle to use as well, and would mean that you could set up to acquire an affordable sim package over the next year by using facetrackNOIR or other webcam-based head tracking, plus saving up for a set of rudder pedals.

Honestly, if you're going to spend money on a HOTAS just ... buy a half-decent one. Get the T16000 HOTAS package and be done with it for the foreseeable future. It's inexpensive, built relatively well for its price point (there's a video of the stick and throttle being disassembled) and reports say it performs well.

a lot of keyboards are branded as "gaming" but are cheap $10 keyboards with a couple bells and whistles, with a stiff premium. get him a mechanical keyboard, 100%. they can get pretty expensive, but redragon has a lot of budget mechanical keyboards that have solid feedback, a quick search returned this and this. they're the same keyboard, except the second has the numpad on the right of the keyboard. there are a lot of options from other brands, just be careful while looking to avoid the "mechanical feel" keyboards, as they aren't as durable or have as long of a lifespan.

I would go for a redragon k552 and maybe put some nice keycaps on it.

mice price and mice quality are not closely linked, as long as you spend more than 10 bucks on one and avoid the stuff that seems a little too good for the price you'll find something that will serve you just as well as a fancy logitech but at 15-20bucks instead of 60+. real example, my logitech g900 is a really nice mouse but at the $90 i paid its not even 2x better than my previous cooler master recon i paid 30ish for. the extra cost is almost all down to it being a fancier brand name and that its wireless.

For the cheapy Thrustmaster HOTAS, apparently the hardware in the PS4 remake is higher quality (it's not just different-colored plastic on top of the same electronics), and it gives a superior deadzone to the old PS3-compatible stick. The TM 16000 HOTAS - I use this for ED - Super awesome for the price. Most HOTAS are overpriced. This one is fantastic for the cost. TONS of buttons and neat features on the throttle you won't see anywhere else! I love the little throttle finger joystick, it makes for perfect lateral and vertical movements to mix with the joystick movements. The X52 will match the in-game model better, but honestly while in VR and doing stuff you're not going to be starring at your joystick and throttle in-game model...like at all. Best budget HOTAS imo.

Yes, at least for me after a few hours. Just don't push yourself and take breaks. I've logged 21 hours so far and don't get it at all anymore.

I have 1.4 set as my SS in the SteamVR ini and VR set to medium with my GTX 980. It is still grainy but I find the text fairly easy to read. Works fairly well though I can notice a little struggling in stations. Asynchronous reprojection works well for this game since it is a seated experience so make sure it is on.

Here's a Chyrosran video covering these switches, the Havit product page for the board and the Kaihua product page for the switches. I think the blues on this board are the same as the clicky tactile (white stem) ones in the video.

I'll try to answer any questions. Overall I'm impressed by the switches (and the board is fine); I just don't know what applications they might have. It's definitely a niche product.

I do also have to agree with your original thoughts. Having a home flight sim can be beneficial if done right.

The Oculus Rift + Touch bundle is still going on. You get everything you need for roomscale VR, it's 100$ more than this. From personal experience having a CV1, a Vive and quite a bit of use with the PSVR... get an oculus no doubt. The PSVR is nothing in comparison and not roomscale ready at all. It feels a lot more like a DK2 did. While the CV1 isn't too far off in terms of specs for the headset, it DOES have roomscale. The biggest difference between Oculus and the PSVR is that the PSVR uses visible light tracking which is no where near as good. Not to mention the PSVR has an even more limited library of games and the PS4 can barely handle it at all.

Me parece que mucha opinion de gente que NO tiene un Vive/Rift por aca, o lo probó 15 mins, o lo compro solo de capricho, o pura envidia (?.

Proud Rift owner here: La mejor compra de los ultimos 2 años lejos despues del upgrade de pc que hice. Por suerte en mi caso me lo trajo uno de mis jefes de US cuando vino para aca (tengo muy buena relacion). La recomendacion del Rift siempre es comprar 1 sensor extra, salen 49.99 en US (Compras el Pack Rift Touch + 1 sensor mas), asi tenes 3 y podes hacer room tracking. El tracking es perfecto si posicionas bien las cosas, incluso con 2 sensores.

Algunas cosas a considerar:

• Necesitas BUEN hardware, hace una diferencia abismal. Pasé de usar el Rift de un i7 4670k a un i7 7700k y hubo un improvement de al menos 50 fps y NADA de stuttering. (tengo una 1070 btw). Tambien depende un poco de cada aplicacion/juego, pero bueno.
  
• Necesitas BUEN mobo para el tema USB, requerimiento son 3 USB 3.0 (Headset, 2 sensores) y el tercer sensor en USB 2.0
  
• Hay 'poca' seleccion de juegos hoy en dia, pero esta mejorando muchisimo esto, comparado a hace 1 año atras hay al menos 4 veces mas cosas para elegir, incluso juegos de 'alta gama' tipo fallout/doom. El ecosistema en general se esta puliendo muchisimo en ambos lados (Steam/Oculus) y hay algunas 'experiencias' o directamente juegos completos que van como piña. Aguante RoboRecall igual.
  
• Necesitas espacio. Lo recomendado es al menos 2m x 2m. Personalmente tengo un espacio (moví TODO en casa) libre de 2.5 x 1.7, lo necesitas si queres moverte libre.
  
• El Oculus Rift con los Touch controllers son excelentes, se sienten como una extension de tu mano. La version de consumer esta muy bien pulida y va como piña. Son lo mejor que se puede hacer en VR ? No, faltan 5 - 10 años para eso. Hoy en dia son de lo mejor y mas comodo. El Vive es muchisimo mas pesado, bulky, incomodo y los controles son 2 palos.
  
• El Vive hizo muchas cosas muy bien, pero todavia le falta mas laburo. Las versiones actuales son mas tech kit que otra cosa. Eso si....los nuevos controles que estan haciendo se van de tema, son la re puta posta, pero dado que lo esta haciendo Valve, van a salir soon™
  
• La diferencia de precio es bastante importante entre los 2 JAJA
  
• Hubo 2 meses que deje de usarlo....por que me esguince el tobillo (IRL, pise mal una baldoza :C). Ni bien me recupere lo segui usando. La verdad es que sigo volviendo y volviendo. Juego mucho al Kingspray y un par de veces a la semana intento darle un rato al BoxVR o Soundboxing para moverme un poco. Hay varios juegos multiplayer que estan increibles y te dan ganas de jugar. Si tenes conocidos o amigos que puedan jugar con vos mejor aun, te da muchas mas ganas de jugarlo juntos digamos. No pierde su encanto, siempre salen cosas nuevas y demas. Ultimamente le meto muchisimo al Kingspray por que es mi ambiente de Relax, lo-fi hip hop de fondo y a graffitear 3 horas.
  
• Hay juegos que la verdad te cambia la percepcion de una forma increible. Jugué mucho Elite Dangerous unos años atras antes de Horizon, pero meterte ADENTRO de las naves y ver lo INMENSO de todo es una experiencia completamente diferente, mas si tenes un joystick o un hotas bien zarpado. Estas ADENTRO, no hay con que darle.
  
• Somos early adopters. El VR para las masas va a estar listo en 10 años, probablemente exponencialmente mas para que sea tan comun como una pc o consola.
  
• Cuanto gastas en boludeces? La mayoria gastamos banda en pelotudeces...hay que aprender a gastar bien y un oculus o vive no estan fuera de alcance ni ahi. Hay gente que compra televisores por 70k ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  
• Fijate de alguna forma que alguien te lo traiga o en algun viaje. Tenes alternativas como tiendamia, pero obviamente suman al precio. • No se si se nota pero amé, amo y amaré VR en la plataforma que sea (en PC, obviamente, Vive/Rift). Hay mucho por delante y recien arrancamos. Hoy en dia recomiendo el Rift, lejos. Y lo digo como fan de Gaben y todo lo que sea Valve.

Presumably they're making money on those and have marked the price up by 2x as is typical with hardware, and the Vive controllers are no more complex, so if they don't mark them up, the controllers should add only $50 to the cost of the final product.

At this point, if they could keep the price below $550 I think they'd have a winner. The Rift is $600 without controllers, and from what I can tell, without a second base station for room scale VR. And the consumer Vive will have headphones and a mic in addition to the front facing camera to allow you to safely move about your room.

All I know for sure is that their headset should be cheaper to manufacture. Whether the other stuff adds up to bring the price up to Oculus levels, or whether Oculus really did subsidize the hardware to the extreme I couldn't say for sure.

1.) take the money you are going to spend on that internal HDD and the external HDD and get you a "large as you can afford" internal SSD. I'd look at either a 1TB or (2) 500GB. Maybe something like this.

2.) Dont waste your money on that keyboard, if you are building a 'red' build, go to amazon and look at the 'red dragon' keyboards.

3.) also, stay away from off brands, IMO. It ain't worth the savings if you have to RMA the part. Mainly looking at the RAM you chose, but the SSD falls in that category also. read reviews. If there are only 2 reviews for something, I personally wouldn't trust it.

Red dragon kumara K552. Anyone who tells you that you can't get a good keyboard for cheap is un-informed. The Kumara is mechanical, heavy, rgb and a solid keyboard all around. I've had mine for 3 years with zero issues. It's 32$ and the only con is that it has no numpad. But if that's your thing, the Kumara k551(i think that's it) has a numpad and is 6 more dollars.

I absolutely adore this game! It's the only MMO I'm actually into! Currently I have one max level character (not max level anymore, the cap was raised to level 60 but you can only get there with the Story Packs).

I currently have two characters that I play on mainly, One called Saikewnonebi (Level 55) on the Republic Side (he's a Jedi Knight, yo.) I also have a girl called Kelechi (Level 35) on the Empire side, she's a Sith Marauder.

I massive enjoy levelling because of the story, but I want to continue the story and go to Manaan and Rishi (the two added planets) - there are also two added endgame Operations (A.K.A Raids) I'm massively missing out on the content my Guild is doing because they all have the DLC's and I don't.

I've been in Eternal Dawn ever since - it's been a good time!

Sony's PS4 controllers are all standard Bluetooth controllers, supported across the board. Every OS and platform. No software required. No dongles required.

I'd recommend buying it new here instead of risking Ebay or other vendors. Only $20.

After you get the CD, make a backup of your disc as an ISO file, as well as as backup of your CD key. Run updates, and you're ready to play campaign mode.

You should get Custom Edition as well. Follow the instructions on the site to make sure you have the latest version, then go nuts.

Notably, I didn't destroy a working SNES. I bought a broken one to use for the case.

Some tips:

1. If you're going to use the front controller ports, like I did, you'll want to cut the traces. I'll post some pictures of this when I get home.
   
2. The bill of materials was, essentially, an HDMI extension cable (short), USB extension cable, some hot glue, solder and a mayflash snes controller adapter which I sacrificed for this purpose.
   
3. Don't be like me and hot snot the raspberry pi in such a way that the microSD card is hard to reach.

Grab a SNES controller if you don't already have one, and get one of these. In my experience there's nothing better to play pre-N64 era games with.

And emulators are on everything now. If you want portable, you can have portable. A RetroPie setup is a good example. I have mine in a tiny NES replicable case. Or I can put them on the tablet I travel with if I want to.

If you already have wireless controllers, just buy one of these. Well, that is a generic version if you want, or you can get the official microsoft one. This is what I use.

Your usb charging cable will not work to make it a wired controller even though it seems like it should. Trust me.

You just need this guy. Ten bucks, and a USB slot and you can use the xbox 360 controller wirelessly. No idea about xbox one. I plan on doing this and I hope windows 8's awful interface will work nicely with the controller so I don't have to use a mouse often. It is going to be set up so I can display on the TV and use it from the couch.

I believe this is the adapter I use and it works out of the box, but your mileage may vary.

Or pick up one of these and a wireless 360 controller. That 10 dollar receiver works so darn well I'm amazed, and it supports 4 controllers as well. Guest Room - Amazon Fire TV connected wireless, rooted to boot into XBMC connected to MySQL DB. If you are looking for a cheap XBMC client, I have had no hiccups or issues with the AFTV.

You have a couple options. XBOX and PS controllers will work on your phone but not directly. The easiest option is to get an "on the go" (OTG) cable that converts USB micro to regular USB and plug a wired modern controller into the OTG cable. When I say wired I mean you have to have it plugged into your Xbox or PS to play on that system. Modern bluetooth controllers (xbox/ps) with the recharge cables have different setups.

I only have a wireless Xbox controller. I bought the OTG and receiver cables linked below. I tried only for a few minutes to get it working but gave up pretty quick. Plenty of people have gotten this to work and I'm sure I could as well if I tried a bit harder.

I ended up buying the 8BitDo controller to play OG Mario and I really like it. I ended up ordering another one for my wife for Christmas. I bought an MHL adapter and play Super Mario and Contra from my couch on my Plasma with my bluetooth controller. Its pretty slick.

If you use the modern console controllers you aren't able to use the MHL HDMI cable. I know there are other options to throw your phone screen on the TV but I found this the easiest option. I vaguely remember having an issue getting my phone in landscape mode with Chromecast casting.

My Setup

Classic NES Controller It has top trigger buttons as well, all of these are programmable depending on what emulator you use.

OTG Cable Nothing fancy about these, with this one you are supposed to be able to plug a power cable into the extra pigtail to help charge your device while playing. I have used this to plug in a regular USB memory stick, a full size keyboard, and a few other items for testing purposes. Everything worked wonderful.

Wireless Gaming Receiver

MHL adapter I price matched this and a micro SD card at Best Buy. This also has a power port on it which I have used.

I could never find one. So I gave up. The buttons never really felt right. Some people swear by the Buffalo pads, but I just didn't like them.

If you've never tried a mechanical keyboard before, its not simply the "click", but the feel of the entire typing experience. You will have to try it out to know what I mean. There are many different types of key switches with different amounts of force required to register their presses, different ones that have a tactile bump that tell you when you've activated the key, ones with no bump at all, different ones that click when pressed down, combinations of these, and a lot more. Its good to be educated about the different types of key switches before finally investing into a mechanical keyboard, based off of your situation and preferences. Head to /r/MechanicalKeyboards if you want to see people with way too many keyboards and good recomendations. Personally, I'd recommend the Cooler Master Storm Quickfire series here and here, or the popular Poker II from Massdrop. A good mechanical keyboard is definitely a worthy investment, as it will last you for a very long time and you can swap out the keycaps if they get damaged or if you want a different look. Also note that Razer's mech keyboards are lower quality than most other keyboards due to their special key switches manufactured in China, so don't trust Razer's keyboards no matter how flashy they look. You're better off with literally any other mechanical keyboard.

For your mouse, its personal preference but if you're going to play something "serious" like CS:GO I'd recommend any mouse from Logitech's gaming lineup since their sensors from the lowest to the highest pricepoint are trusted by pro players.

I've had Cherry Reds, Blues, and Kailh blue switches.

Order of recommendation

Cherry blues for the feel and durability.

Kailh blues for the sound.

I cannot recommend Cherry Reds. I HATED them. I had a Quickfire TK and while i loved the layout, I hated the Red switches. They're too soft and if you're heavy handed they will press very easily on accident. I spilled a Gin and Tonic on it the other night. Like 5 nights ago. I haven't reassembled it yet to see if it works after putting it in a dehumidifier.

My first mechanical was a Tt eSPORTS Poseidon Z but the spacebar switch stopped working so I'm in the process of desoldering all the switches on it. I'm going to get some Blacks or maybe Browns for it. Just something I haven't tried yet.

Spend $10 more and get it brand new here. At that price point, there are several boards you can get with Cherry MX Red switches for brand new.

This is just my personal experience but I have never had good luck with Razer products (other people have however), and I do not like third party programs needed to get the most out of my equipment but that means you usually will not get any keyboards or mouses with extra macro buttons or anything else.

I don't know about starting with Morrowind honestly. It's definitely a hard game and it turned me away from the series for a little bit before I picked up Oblivion and loved it. Skyrim is amazing as well but I would suggest starting with Oblivion.

Set your hotkeys to the number pad along with jump and you can use mouse movement for character control. I use this control scheme with wasd movement but it could easily be modified for one handed use.

I have this mouse. It regularly goes on sale for $30 or so. It's not a big brand, but hasn't failed me yet (have had it for a few years now) and the extra buttons are fantastic.

He's going to have a rough time getting both a many-buttoned mouse and headset for $50 though, at least if he wants anything of quality. A good headset can run that or more on its own.

I second this, I've been using the Naga for years now and don't think I would ever want to go back. Razer has had the market to themselves for a long time, but I stumbled upon these while looking for the naga and g600 links. It's good to see that there's some competition coming in the market, but I couldn't tell you if these two are worth getting.

Gonna echo what several other users said. My wife uses a G600, and I prefer the Redragon Perdition.

Redragon Perdition. I picked this up for $35 last December, intending to use it for a couple of months. It has since seen a month of playtime in FFXIV, and plenty in other MMOs. I use it every single day and can't recommend it enough.

And it's 4.5 stars on Amazon with 2.5k reviews, which is pretty crazy.

Yeah, I can't see a use for 16.4k DPI on a mouse at all, and that's coming from someone who does use a high DPI. I usually have mine sitting at around 3500-4000 (to be fair, I don't play any FPS games). And those seem slow to me but I still wouldn't touch 16.4k.

I bet it's your mouse. I have a cheap Chinese mouse (M901 Perdition) that did this exact thing a few months ago. I would enter instanced content and do the first half smoothly and then suddenly right clicking to turn my camera would cut my frames in half for a split second. You can tell it's not an issue with rendering because right clicking and turning the camera a couple degrees (not enough to cause a huge dip in FPS due to rendering) would drop the framerate by about 10-15.

Fortunately for me it fixed itself and I don't have to worry about it anymore but something that would fix it temporarily is - while FF14 is running - opening the manufacturer's mouse software tool, changing the DPI to some arbitrary value, applying it, then changing it back to my desired value. I wish I knew why this worked for me. At the end of the day it was a software incompatibility between my mouse's drivers and FF14. Didn't happen with any other games. Even ones with similar control schemes and/or higher graphical requirements.

The point of this is to offer my anecdote to hopefully dissuade you from completely ruling out your mouse as a vector for framerate issues because it happened to me and it was maddening. Get yourself a cheap mouse, see if the issue persists, and return the mouse.

I bought this a while back, because I needed a new mouse. The biggest selling point for me is that there are two programmable keys on it (the zoom button and the thumb spot). I have it programmed for copy and paste (I use dvorak, it can be a pain to copy and paste a lot of stuff at once), but it could easily programmed for an enter. There are plenty of other gaming mice with even more buttons, too.

I used to use the Corsair m95 until I found this one the "Redragon Perdition" It's badass and I've have had 3 other friends that play mmo's buy them after they tried mine. This one is $36. I'm getting the Logitech G600 because it's a little less riced-out, and a bit more professional-looking, but it's also a tax write-off, so.. there you go.

I hate the buttons there; no matter what the design, they seem to dig unto my palm rest. I think it's because I have such tiny hands - in order to keep my fingers up at the buttons, my palm starts sooner than average (even relative to the average woman; I'm only 4'11") and so end up sitting on those middle buttons uncomfortably.

I don't usually use thumb buttons either, even for gaming, but most non-gaming mice that are less likely to have those middle buttons either aren't sensitive or durable enough for what I'm looking for. I've read through some old threads here to find mice suggestions for people with small hands, but every one I've tried still has center buttons. Or when I finally find one without, like this one, reviews say it's especially good for big hands.

I just bought this from the store, hoping a non-gaming mouse would be okay, but it just isn't smooth or good feeling, not sure if that's because of the sensitivity or the material or the wireless factor. I didn't want wireless but it was all I could find in what I was looking for that was comfortable to hold.

Depends on what you play it for. If you played it for the story - absolutely.

Sadly over the past year there has only been one new addition to group play - a warzone. There hasn't been a new operation (raid) or flashpoint (instance) since December 2014 with the release of the previous expansion. But they did scale everything up to the current level cap so you can play all the operations and instances, and scale you down to the level of zones you're visiting and the experience/credits/loot up to your level so everything is always at the very least somewhat challenging, rewarding, and fun to play.

Game's still pretty great, but people who have been playing it since launch are understandably burnt out.

RP is still going strong on the main RP server (Ebon Hawk) and if you're interested in PvP the few remaining PvP ruletype servers still have strong PvP. There's rumors of them moving towards a megaserver format to merge all the servers in a region together, but we haven't seen anything on it in a while.

It's definitely better than it was at launch, and someone just starting today will have a thousand hours of content to consume before they start retreading over old stuff, but its pretty hard to stay subscribed right now unless you have a core group of friends keeping the game fun.

If anyone wants to give it a try, its free to play and free to start. Most of the game is free, but honestly the F2P mode is pretty limited gameplay wise (no instances or PvP for the most part) and stops just before the first expansion. If you want to get all the content, subscription starts at $15 a month, but Amazon sells a 3 month bundle that also comes with $20 of the premium currency (used to purchase cosmetic stuff or experience boosts - which are useless because you level so fast) for $40. You can also use it for existing accounts but only once. Once you subscribe you have permanent access to all story content after the first expansion and your F2P mode is a bit less limited when your subscription lapses.

Don't let the hatejerk on /r/gaming and this sub lie either, this game is KOTOR 3, and KOTOR 4-10 as well. All 8 classes have their own story and they're fantastically written, especially now that you can skip all the sidequest MMO bullshit and just run through the story stuff and have fun. The gameplay is what you'd expect from an MMO, but it has a bioware spin on it (No auto attacks, everyone has companions that can help them fight and fill a role they can't, etc.)

Recommended system requirements for Legion are substantially lower than what your going to be buying, I'm talking 3-4 year old parts. As far as WoW is concerned you'll be able to play it until 2020 with little to no issues.


If your going to be waiting a month or so for the release of the 480 you should check out buildapcsales to buy parts that may be an upgrade to a part that you've already settled on at that price point.


I would also suggest getting something like the Reddragon 901 the extra thumb buttons when used properly can make a huge difference in reaction time.

I use one of these. Pretty handy since I main healer classes, can set up to 5 DPI profiles along with lighting profiles. I've had it for maybe a year now, no issues with it so far other than the little thumb rest that gets in the way sometimes ($45.99 USD excl taxes and shipping).


If that's still too much, there's also the Redragon Perdition. Haven't personally used it but it's getting decent reviews, not sure if you can customize its DPI profiles but it's cheaper ($34.96 USD excl taxes and shipping).

I play with a Perdition Redragon . 12 thumb buttons, only six are really accessable. All my comms are on the mouse. Local, Squad, Command, Discord.

Anyone who's ever played with me knows... I always mix up my comms.

To command: "Sorry squad, it looks like we'll have to take this point by ourselves. Squad 1 is busy standing beside their mortars. " Also to command: "Sorry, wrong comms."

(SL1 usually doesn't say anything for the rest of the game)

I have a HOJAM setup with a t16000 and an mmo mouse (18 keys total on the mouse.)




Right now, I have strafe left set to the left key on the top of the joystick, strafe right to the right key, strafe up set to the biggest key on the joystick, and strafe down set to the trigger.


Things like 'cycle friendly' and 'target nearest hostile' are set to the hat on the joystick.


Pitch, yaw, and roll are set to joystick (the mouse does no flying.)


Speed up, slow down, decoupled strafe forward, and decoupled strafe backward are set to the two keys behind the scroll wheel (originally dpi keys.)


Scroll wheel forward one click enters decoupled mode, another click forward exits decoupled mode.


Scroll wheel backward is velocity 0/100


afterburner is set to what I call the 'Don't Panic' button, a red button to the left of my left click.



3 button on mouse is fire 3

6 button is fire 4

9 button is cycle countermeasure

12 button is release countermeasure

8 and 11 cycle through the hud focus (shield screen, power distribution screen, etc)

4,7, and 10 are power to weapons, power to shield, and power to thrusters

5 is equalize power

2 is hud interaction mode toggle

1 is space brake



The numpad on the keyboard is still used for shields, but since I mainly use a 300i, I might do away with equalize power (5) and hud interaction mode (2) keybinds and make those shield distribution keys. I do like the idea of having one mouse profile for all ships though.


Missile lock/launch is mouse wheel button


I use mouse to aim gimbaled weapons.




This is probably not the most efficient setup, but it works for me and it might help you get a setup that you are comfortable with. A side effect of this setup is that I can't grab a mouse without putting three fingers on top of it now; one finger for left click, one finger for mouse wheel and the thruster keys, and one finger for right click.

If you mean how hard is the physical pressing action, it does not take much pressure. The buttons are small. I'd say it's about the same amount of pressure to push one as it does a normal key on a keyboard.

If you mean how easy is it to reach all of them? All 12 buttons are concentrated in a rectangle that measures probably 1"x2". For me, reaching buttons 1-9 is pretty easy without even having to shift my thumb at all. Buttons 10-12 took some getting used to but now it's second nature.

The biggest hurdle is just adjusting your muscle memory to using the mouse buttons for the majority of your actions. It took several play sessions to get used to it. To be honest, I felt like I was pretty worthless at first because I'd get lost in the heat of battle trying to remember what key I needed to hit. Lost several GCD's every now and then and also casted the wrong spell plenty of times. After a few sessions, it all pretty much clicked though and now it's second nature.

Don't switch to this style and expect an immediate improvement. You will get worse before you get better. Just like if you totally change up your keybinds, your body has to adjust.

Here is the mouse I bought. It's pretty cheap, so hopefully if you think it will help you, the investment is minimal. They make higher dollar ones that are probably better, so you can check those out too if you don't like this one.

There's also the Logitech G602. The 602 is more comfortable for me as I can't stand the ring finger rest on MMO mice. The 602 can also use 1 or 2 AA batteries for weight purposes which lasts for months. Further, the 602 has several extra buttons up top, one of which can be used as a shift button to turn those 6 side buttons into 12.

I use a Redragon Perdition M901. Its relatively cheap, has 12 side buttons for the hotbar and has a trigger button in the place I like to assign my push-to-talk.

I use a 12 bottom on the side MMO mouse to play ESO for me it makes play a lot easier.

This is the one I've been using for 3 years to play ESO but there are a lot of those brands out there.

I have this one which is apparently programmable. I'll have to mess with it some time to see if I can just macro some weird key combination to fake having extra buttons.

For 20 USD(!) back at 30 USD, the Havit HV-MS735 is a pretty good budget option. Has a 3360 sensor, 12 grid, side scroll, and is ~107 grams with the internal weight removed, which isn't too bad for a 12 grid mouse, not to mention it being at the current price that it is.

At 30 USD, the updated Redragon M901 is the lightest 12 grid mouse available with a 3360. Has an additional button on the left side, and doesn't require any opening up to remove the weights. Weighs in at only 87 grams without weights.

At 60 USD (50 refurbished), the Corsair Scimitar is a 12 grid mouse with a 336X variant. Has the gimmick with adjusting the 12 grid, which is actually not too bad because if a 12 grid doesn't sit exactly right, you either lose full functionality or comfort. Unfortunately weighs a buttload at ~120 grams, which is normally a deal breaker for some.

Of course the Naga Trinity, which has the side panel gimmick. If the cable is like any recent Razer mouse, it'll have the best cable of the bunch by far. Also ~120 grams, so another monster in the weight class.

Logitech G600 at ~34 USD is an okay mouse. Logitech software is a lot better than Synapse and the crap the Chinese OEMs have. Has a pretty garbage sensor in it though, so FPS is going to be a no go.

Honestly though, the HV-MS735 and M901 are good. Unless you insist on using a mainstream mouse or dislike Chinese OEM software, the Redragon M901 is amazing due its weight class and the HV-MS734 is a budget god at 20 USD is still really good at 30 USD if you want side scroll.

No letter binds at all, not with the mouse I use (This one). The only keyboard buttons I use for abilities are just as modifiers (shift/alt plus 1-12). I was never a fan of getting rid of any movement keys, mice made for MMO's made a TON of difference for me when they first came out over a decade ago. Not sure I could go back to playing without one.

Redragon Perdition.

for 35 bucks, i figured it's be cheap and break pretty quick or have issues. nope. there's other redragon mouse designs too, gotta assume they are just as good. I want to say they are in line with razer nagas but that may be a bold statement, my brother has a razer, i honestly think the redragon feels a bit.. sturdier, but that's just feel, says nothing about real quality, which, i think they are pretty much even. The software that comes with it is great, set your dpi settings, theres i think 4-5 settings, and tqo buttons behind mouse wheel to switch between them (up and down) and you can customize each one, so like 800 for one, 1200 for another, whatever you want up to 16400 dpi. mousewheel changes color to indicate what setting you're on. The logo and the numbers light up which you can customize that color and if it pulses and how fast. I constantly recommend this mouse to people looking for a cheap, quality alternative. and i think it has 5 star rating on amazon with 2512 reviews. Keep your options open but i can't say enough good things about the price and quality of this mouse. I play overwatch, ffxiv. Love this thing. 34 for black, 37 for the white one, which i wanted but my case is black and i kept that theme.

Redragon Perdition. I took a gamble on a cheap Chinese mouse when my Razer Naga died after six months, and it paid off. This mouse has served me well for almost two and a half years of heavy use.

I use the thumb buttons to switch between combos for each class, because why waste space for buttons I only need sometimes? I got tired of reaching for the buttons and decided to bring the buttons to me. I started with this system when Samurai came out because the rotation was absolutely incompatible with my old layout, and just adapted it to every class I played afterwards.

I forgot to mention, the source bars on top are normally hidden and are just shown to demonstrate how the macro system works. It doesn't actually physically switch the hotbar, it just copies the skills to hotbar 1.

You dont really need one, but if you dont go for the Naga Hex (tho careful they break naturally quite fast), id recommend a Redragon Perdition over the normal Naga or the G600 because of its shape, macro options and matte surface.

Mouse buttons are my savior. In PvP, I find it incredibly useful to be able to still move with my left hand, while attacking with my right hand (and camera movement).

That said, I used to use a Razer Naga, but the right mouse button recently died on me. I just picked up a Redragon Perdition ($37 on Amazon) and I am pleasantly surprised at its quality for that price.

OP, I see a lot of comments telling you to get an mmo mouse. I'd like to take a moment to recommend this cheap device that I've been using heavily for about 3 years now and still works fantastically. It comes with software that allows all 12 side button and even an alt click to be programmed to any key/action/macro (I have my alt click programmed to double click for all those pesky loot bags). The color of the lighting is fully customizable as well as the DPI of the mouse movements, and all of these can be set to 5 independent profiles that can be switched at the push of a button. There are also weights that can be added/removed to change the mass of the mouse to your preference. The only hangup I have is that the software can be finicky at times but once you've found a setup or two that you like there's no reason to use it anymore because the information is stored on the mouse. Can't recommend it enough.

I'm going to be the odd one out with the Naga Trinity, then. Razer's quality control has, in my experience, been extremely poor. I have owned three Razer Naga mice in my life, and each one has died after about a year of use, generally due to either the left mouse button or middle click becoming faulty.

The Trinity in particular lasted the least amount of time. I bought it at the beginning of BfA, and two months ago, it began to double and triple click on left mouse button, making using it virtually impossible. I'm not a hardcore raider and I'm not someone who rages and breaks my belongings; all three have died under casual WoW playing use, no especially hard play or anything like that.

Instead of buying a fourth Naga, I instead purchased a Redragon M901. It's a Chinese "knock-off", but honestly, I'm blown away by how well it works. The buttons are firmer than the Naga, and everything feels so much more sturdy. I'm not at all worried about breaking this thing, and it even comes with a bunch of QoL things that the Naga doesn't, like weights, a carrying case, and an extra set of skates for the bottom when they get worn out.

Plus, it's close to a quarter of the price. $30, compared to $100.

Personally, I'm never touching a Razer product again in my life. Obviously most other people have better experiences, and that's fine, but for me they've been just garbage.
