I love love love my Cole and Mason. Pepper mill mechanism is carbon steel with 6 grind settings, salt mill is ceramic with 3 grind settings. The reservoir is acrylic rather than glass, but it looks really good and won't break if you drop it. I got one for myself and loved it so much I bought one for my mother 6 months later; had it about 2 years now and it works great! They're kinda expensive ($75 for the set or $40 each) but IMO they are 100% worth it.

As a normal human who doesn't have the time for the slow and inconsistent grinds of a mortar and pestle (I have one, but I just really don't like it), I highly recommend the OXO salt & pepper grinders. I've gotten them as wedding presents after getting them for a Christmas. They have 5 settings, the finest being similar to everyday salt size & the coarsest crushing peppercorns in half or thirds.

Every other one I've owned has gotten clogged before I was even able to go through its packaged contents, these have been refilled at least 10 times and crush exactly the same. They are a Godsend for a black pepper fan like myself.

No problem! I have info for the US.

Here's the grinding mechanism. It is meant to be put onto these glass jars. So you have to buy both for one spice grinder basically. Comes out to $12/grinder total. I found on Amazon earlier today sets of 2 for $15. I don't know how they compare in quality to Ikea.

I have that pepper grinder. I have the smoke-colored one though.

I ended up swapping it out for a more robust stainless steel version for my daily carry: http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Grind-Pepper-Mills-Set/dp/B00BN126QQ

I bought this a year ago. Liked it because it grinds very smooth and it also grinds a decent amount per semi turn. https://www.amazon.com/COLE-MASON-Derwent-Pepper-Grinder/dp/B0099V31D4?th=1&psc=1

I picked up this set a couple years ago. I've been very pleased with it.

I got grinders from amazon that work great - after dehydrating in the oven, I did a quick grind in the food processor to break down the big chunks (which did make some into powder as mentioned above) and now we use it like a black pepper grinder to get “fresh” flakes on pizza and the like.

They're not plastic but they're relatively inexpensive, I bought two ceramic salt grinders (little glass globes with stainless steel and ceramic grinder top) they come together in packs of two on Amazon for like 20 bucks or something. Order two of the 2 packs and you're past the 25 dollar free shipping, wait a few days and bam! Not top quality but I've had them for a month and they're quite reliable so far. Adjustable coarseness too which is nice.

Edit: price was 20 not 14, here's the link: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B012BMB490/ref=s9_top_hm_awbw_b7FsbZb_g79_i17/158-8140395-0188206?pf_rd_m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&pf_rd_s=mobile-hybrid-11&pf_rd_r=32ZXTVQC4SAFET7DM934&pf_rd_t=30901&pf_rd_p=2b90f9f8-a7e3-5f06-bd21-b4ebad4667ec&pf_rd_i=6647589011

Also this is all in CAD, if you're in the states they'll be much cheaper, plus the exchange rate.

Wow, I didn't know they had so many different ones. These are the ones I have.. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001CDP5UO/ref=psdcmw_15850251_t3_B011KFIB9A?th=1&psc=1

Is this the one you have?

u/MsModernity · 2 pointsr/mildlyinfuriating

You're right. After a few frustrating years of having this wooden-knob version, we got a metal one with a springy tension mechanism that let's you just slip the old tube off and put a new one on, one-handed. It's just so easy that we never have this empty tube issue anymore.

Also worth the upgrade: battery-powered pepper grinder that activates when you turn it upside down. No more greasy two-handed grinding when you're trying to cook.

I've had my Graviti pepper mill for four years now and I will never use anything else. I like to use a LOT of pepper and grinding is always such a ridiculous chore. It uses 6 AAA batteries but even with the daily use I put it through, good batteries (like Lithium - cost about $20) will last me a whole year.

Anyway, it puts out a shit ton of pepper and all you have to do is turn it upside down! I love it.

Oh I guess you got one of the larger ones. I assumed you had meant one like this

This looks about right, doesn’t it?

u/dinomite · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

Pre-ground pepper is as good as sand. You need to grind it at the time of use.

Get a 6 inch Unicorn Magnum (or 9 inch, if you can handle it)—these grinders are so efficient you can get the same amount of pepper from 1/2 turn as would take 5 turns on lesser pepper mills.

If you're not into the whole "nine inch black magnum" thing, then these OXO grinders are nearly as good.

This should take you to the right one. Turns out it was the Amazon's choice anyways. I can attest that it's high quality, though.

u/Himecchi · 1 pointr/Cooking

I've gone through about 3 sets of cheap salt/pepper mills just over the past year and after that frustrating mess, I took some advice to get this set from OxO and I have not been happier. I'm sure a more expensive set could do better, but these are quality feeling and get the job done, and they have easily changed size settings.

u/danthebeerman · 1 pointr/Cooking

I picked up a set of these OXO bois on a MEGA sale at Kohl's a while ago. Super ergonomic, the variable size switch is solid and easy to switch on the fly, grinds clean, easy to clean, and stores well. A bit fancy, yeah, but totally worth it.

u/slawre89 · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I’ve tried many over the years including the fancy/beautiful Peugeot. Didn’t like it. Too hard to adjust coarseness. Broke a Peugeot after 3 months of ownership. Maybe I didn’t have the right model...but still.

Have had these for 5 years and love them. Easy to adjust. Built sturdy. Won’t break the bank either. Only minor complaint is they are on the small side. I cook every night just about. I have to refill them about once every 2 months.

Will definitely be making these!

If anyone is wondering about the awesome vaporizer / mechmod / R2D2 penis / pepper grinder...I have one and I love it. Comes in a set of 2 and great for cooking and seasoning when you might only have one free clean hand.
