You should search on OfferUp or Facebook marketplace to find the Dreamcast if you can! There is a way to connect a USB keyboard to the Dreamcast, but it's a pain. Everything else is an eBay thing to get!

Also, don't get the VGA to HDMI thing! I would recommend going for this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BZP7HML/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fXyTBbM941B0C

u/BangkokPadang · 5 pointsr/dreamcast

The easy answer is that you need to buy one of THESE and then plug it in to one of THESE.

For more money, you can buy a better quality VGA box, and a better quality upscaler. You could even get a VGA to HDMI converter and skip component altogether, if your TV has HDMI.

I have long fingers with relatively small palms ("piano hands", my grandmother calls them), so while I have no problems holding an N64 controller mostly normally, I'm always hitting Z with the second segment of my finger (the 'intermediate phalange' according to this chart). This is the case for the GameCube's L/R buttons as well. Having long fingers also makes the stock Dreamcast controller's shallow handholds extremely uncomfortable and cramp-causing (which is why I have a bunch of Mad Catz Dream Pads, which are much more comfortable and just generally better than the stock controllers)...

Where are you located? Have you tried looking for independent game stores in your area? Sometimes they have some good deals, and even if they cost a little more, it might be worth it just to be able to check out the condition of the used merchandise before you buy it.

Are there any specific games you are looking for? $15+ is a pretty typical price tag for the more uncommon or high-demand titles, but there's still a lot of great stuff out there that can be picked up on the cheap. Amazon Marketplace is a great place to go for deals, and often times you can find new copies of games for around $10 or less. Right now you can get a new copy of Chu Chu Rocket for $3.94, a new copy of of Jet Grind Radio for $10.99, a new copy of Phantasy Star Online (it has an off-line game too) for $3.20, a new copy of Space Channel 5 for $4.49, a new copy of Tennis 2K2 for $3.34, a new copy of Test Drive Le Mans for $0.01, and a new copy of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for $9.99.

Nice post. I am in the US and my set up is

Tomee VGA cable

Also need this to convert the audio
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0141KPE50?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

It works great and looks amazing seeing the DC in 1080p. The only issue I had is to make sure you plug the VGA cable in tightly. It fits more snugly than it is supposed to and if it isn't pushed in all the way, it won't work.

u/ChildofValhalla · 4 pointsr/dreamcast

I use the RetroBit VGA cable and despite needing to kind of force it in the first time, the picture quality is fantastic. I don't have it hooked up to an HDMI converter, though.

You could always just buy a Dreamcast HDMI cable these days.

u/SiliconeClone · 3 pointsr/dreamcast

Amazon Prime is the fastest way :p https://amzn.com/B07G11VW1Z

They are cheaper elsewhere ($107 on Amazon), but you get Amazon's return policy if it blows.

IT'S NOT DEAD

WE CAN BELIEVE

WE CAN BELIEVE

also I uh

acquired it

on PC quite some time ago and the sound quality was like medium-ish, but I've always enjoyed lower bitrates for music, but I heavily recommend finding a dreamcast and buying that version. I've seen it go for unusual prices till I just saw some company selling these off the pallet for $20 untouched, still wrapped. Also, the sound quality is better for the dreamcast one and a year ago we DID connect to the server using my dreamcast.

I've never been so blown away when I first started up a game in my life. Definitely connect it to a high-fi system.

edit: ayy lmao

this is not the same company I purchased it from, beacuse same company sold those dreamcast keyboards for like $20 too.

u/DIXINMYAZZ · 3 pointsr/gamecollecting

I feel I'm lowering Reddit's general quality by continuing this comment chain any further, but I want to quickly point out that when products are sitting in an Amazon warehouse, they are not going to fade into obscurity or be lost.

Because I bought it, there is one more collector in the world that has the game. Seeing as you did not buy this copy and I did, there is no longer any correlation between your chances of obtaining one and me unwrapping mine. It's a pretty silly thought process when you analyze it. There was no point and will be no point where I was/am going to make this available to another person such as yourself. When I purchased it (just like you can!) this physical instance of the game instantly became unavailable to you forever, regardless of whatever ridiculous and heinous unwrapping I may or may not choose to perform on it after that point.

Whenever you really want one... they're still out there!!

u/SwervinGirvin · 3 pointsr/dreamcast

What are you trying to output to? HDTV? CRT monitor? Because sometimes the VGA is a minimal difference on HD displays, either that or you get excessive smudging and it could actually look worse. Then you'd have to introduce an upscaler such as the XRGB mini and since you're on a budget don't even look up the price of that device.

But if you are going straight into a CRT then just about anything will work but I'd recommend a "box" over "cable" any day. Just make sure you've got corresponding speakers to connect to your respective "box". Some have a 3.5mm audio jack and some have Stereo Out (red & white).

Jet Grind Radio. It's the game I love the most that I don't happen to own yet. The graphics are amazing, the gameplay superb, and the music wonderful. Used is perfectly fine!

u/RockhartClothing · 2 pointsr/gamecollecting

Of course! Also, If you're looking for a solid HDMI cable I'd recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HQCHRXX/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I have one and have had 0 issues with it so far, and unlike the pound cable it works with capture cards too :)

u/shaunyvee · 2 pointsr/PS4

Scooped my PS4 today and ordered this shortly after. Not many reviews, but those that are seem pretty positive. YouTube unboxing looked good to me, too. I happen to enjoy the camo pattern, you may find it corny. Search amazon though! Hope this helps

u/Thornnuminous · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

You need this - Typing of the Dead

u/junttiana · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

yeah well havent tried it on steam yet. you might be able to use that controller by buying this, not sure though:http://www.amazon.com/Dreamcast-Controller-Converter-Adapter-Mayflash-Sega/dp/B00K7YK0YA

You would also need this: http://www.amazon.com/SEGA-Dreamcast-Fishing-Controller/dp/B00000K2R9/

I would just recommend buying dreamcast itself. It has loads of great games and you can get it really cheaply from Amazon or Ebay and the games are fairly easy to burn on CDRs with a bit of software

u/tucsonsduke · 2 pointsr/dreamcast

Since VGA is Analog and DP is Digital, you usually need a powered adapter. Also, all the adapters I've found have been DP to VGA, not the other way around. When dealing with VGA the direction is important. I think you could possibly do it with a VGA to HDMI adapter.

https://www.amazon.com/VicTsing-Converter-Adapter-Output-Female/dp/B00K4W62R4/

Followed by a HDMI to Displayport cable.

https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-DisplayPort-Cable-Resolution-Ready/dp/B00Z05JMKO/

The best route might be a Dreamcast to HDMI adapter

https://www.amazon.com/HD-Link-Cable-Dreamcast/dp/B07BZP7HML

followed by a female HDMI to Displayport.

https://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Adapter-Benfei-Converter-Gold-Plated/dp/B017Q8ZVWK/

It's certainly possible, but it'll be a bit more work than I think you envisioned.

Edit - P.S. Be sure that the Displayport on your iMac is a displayport in and not a displayport out.

P.P.S. It seems the Female HDMI to Displayport might be one direction as well, DP-->HDMI

u/Mercennarius · 2 pointsr/dreamcast

This is the cable i'm using:
https://www.amazon.com/Tomee-Sega-VGA-Cable-Sound-Adapter/dp/B00HPU96FI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482862111&sr=8-1&keywords=tomee+vga+dreamcast

This is the HDMI coverter/upscaler I use:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Comprehensive-VGA-with-Stereo-Audio-to-HDMI-Converter-4K-60-YUV420-/201612840835?hash=item2ef10fcf83:g:MLUAAOSwZ1BXckDp

And you will need an RCA to 3.5mm adapter for sound like this:
https://www.amazon.com/WOVTE-3-5mm-Stereo-Female-Adapter/dp/B00W2Z1FJ6/ref=sr_1_29?ie=UTF8&qid=1482862492&sr=8-29&keywords=rca+to+3.5+mm+female

Total I spent under $100 for everything and I get a beautiful 4K HDMI and sound output to my TV...couldn't be happier with the setup. I'm not an expert on input lag as it's never really been an issue for me in the past but I don't notice it with this setup...

u/revenge_society · 2 pointsr/dreamcast

I used an Auron ‘HDMI Link Cable for Dreamcast’ that I was able to find on Amazon. It’s basically just a dongle that plugs directly into the video output slot on the console and then you just connect the hdmi cable to the dongle.

[Mad Catz MC wheel for dreamcast]

without a doubt the best wheel for the dreamcast
(just make sure you get the MC2 and NOT the first MC, the first one is horrid)

u/s_SoNick · 2 pointsr/emulation

Hm? I've never had trouble finding them myself and they've stayed consistently cheap on Amazon for the past month, if not longer. I've been watching that page in particular since I read about the Dreampi, and I almost ordered it before my little brother found the same color VMU in a retro games store recently and purchased it for me.

u/Caseman550 · 1 pointr/dreamcast

I was thinking get one of these or this. Thoughts?

u/Deeblite · 1 pointr/dreamcast

I wanna say it's version 2.0, and it had different cover art. I can't find any sources to back that up, though.
EDIT: http://www.amazon.com/Dreamcast-Browser-SegaNet-version-Sega/dp/B0018N1DNG
This is version 2.0 here. It doesn't SAY anything about supporting the broadband adapter, and it doesn't look like the cover art I remember seeing. So I guess I have no idea.

u/BS401 · 1 pointr/dreamcast

This just arrived yesterday and it works great hooked up to my monitor I usually have my desktop plugged into.

I'm not an expert so I defer to Google in that regards. The Akira is supposed to be good. I use a aftermarket VGA cable to upscaler. It has some issues but it definitely looks better than AV cables. Check the links below for what I currently use.

>all the older games in the series mentioned are reviewed much more favorably than recent installments

That's not what you said. You said "most of the games". That's blatantly false. On all counts.

>I can't believe I forgot one of the biggest Japanese franchises in the world, Pokemon. You don't want to look at the ratings for that one.

What do I not want to look at? Me being right?

Sun/Moon are at 4

X and Y are at 4.5

ORAS are at 4.

Ultra Sun and Moon are lower but they got a bit of a negative response here too. Just like FF 13/15.

Black/White are at 4.

B/W 2 are at 4.

Heart Gold/Soul Silver are at 4.

Platinum is a 4.

Sounds like you're full of shit. So I ask you again. Do you have something better or are you gonna just keep spouting bullshit and moving the goalposts?

u/docbaily · 1 pointr/dreamcast

That's a GDEMU drive replacement. It plugs into the connector that the GD-ROM drive would normally connect to. Mine is a clone of the original that I got on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G11VW1Z/

The white part around it is a 3D printed enclosure. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1585333

Edit: If you do go with a clone route for GDEMU, don't update the firmware. Just leave it. It works.

u/8BiTw0LF · 1 pointr/dreamcast

DCHDMI, but if you don't have the money for it, get this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SK85NGH/

u/ShakeNBakey · 1 pointr/dreamcast

I use these just fine. Never had a problem with the two TVs I have that have VGA hook ups

u/morphinapg · 1 pointr/dreamcast

Let the TV do the upscaling. Those TVs do upscaling great and any cable will be far worse at upscaling than the TV. Use the HDMI cable I bought here:

headset

I would I highly recommend this pair fairly in expensive and I absolutely love them great. For the main game I play being rainbow six siege the game is all about hearing sounds and knowing where your opponent is and these work absolutely great for it.

u/zaprowsdower77 · 1 pointr/dreamcast

You should be able to run your dreamcast through hdmi with better graphics for 60 bucks, you simply need these three things...

http://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-1080p-HDMI-Scaling-Converter/dp/B008COJXHC/ref=pd_cp_e_0
http://www.amazon.com/Tomee-Sega-VGA-Cable-Sound-Adapter/dp/B00HPU96FI
And then a tiny audio adapter in order to connect the cables and have the audio go through hdmi, http://www.amazon.com/3-5mm-Male-RCA-Female-Discontinued/dp/B0018MI5F6/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1406852313&sr=1-3&keywords=red+white+audio+to+3.5mm

The Etekcity can do 720p but for some reason 1080 does not work. I first bought a Panlong, it did not work for me. The picture would show in 720 and 1080 but it scrolls diagonally and could not be fixed. I then bought the Etekcity, and although it only works in 720 it still looks ridiculously nicer than standard. I assumed it would barely be noticeable but it is a lot, though if you never played dreamcast the standard way it might not seem all that big of a deal.

u/ChurchMilitant · 1 pointr/dreamcast

I just bought one of these, but ultimately I want to get a VGA-to-HDMI converter.

Should I have gotten the VGA Box instead?

u/IronElephant · 1 pointr/patientgamers

Just checked.

Current prices from Amazon US and ebay US in USD. Summer 2016.

[Y Version](https://amzn.com/B00KI2OZ9M) and Omega Ruby are roughly the same price as when they launched at $39.99. If anything they're a few dollars cheaper due to slight age and price fluctuation.

But a game like Black Version 2 is about $60 new and $45 used. It is a last gen game and no longer in production.

And finally the worst example, and the game that many people want to play, is the English version of HeartGold and SoulSilver. Price fluctuates around $100 for new and used English games.

Amazon /// ebay

Japanese imported versions are much cheaper, $30 on Amazon. Sadly, only the current gen of Pokemon Games has language options. For the other 5 generations you need to buy the game in your language; or learn Japanese.

u/icebear518 · 1 pointr/dreamcast

Does your TV have a hdmi port? You could buy a hdmi dreamcast cord POUND HD Link Cable for Sega Dreamcast https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BZP7HML/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_57xBCbENXH6D7

This might work for you.

So idk if I'm getting this right your trying to use a RF cord to display the dreamcast but since you use RF to get your TV channels it's kinda blocking them if you have both plugged in the same time?? Here in the US there is nothing on channel 3 so when you set the RF cord to channel 3 it will display on that. (I could be talking about something completely so disregard that if that's not what we are talking about lol)

u/tetsuo316 · 1 pointr/gaming

Cool - thanks! There's one available on Amazon but the reviews aren't great. If you know of a reliable one, I'd appreciate it!

u/ShinyMegaCharizardX · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace
u/Oshtoby · 1 pointr/dreamcast

Absolutely. Super easy to install. Just make sure your Dreamcast is a VA1 model. You cannot install them in VA0 or VA2 models. VA1's are the most common Dreamcasts, so it's very likely you have one, but just check before you buy.

To check you have to open the Dreamcast and just take off the top shell. More info here: https://gdemu.wordpress.com/installation/gdemu-installation/

You will get conflicting information as to how big an SD the GDEMU can hold. I personally have a 128GB card in mine. Holds just over 100 games. I have heard 256GB works as well, but I cannot confirm.

ADDENDUM: If you're interested in the Amazon thing I mentioned, and are willing to pay 40 bucks more just to know you won't get shafted by AliExpress, I got mine here: https://www.amazon.com/XBERSTAR-Optical-Simulation-Dreamcast-Machine-Generation/dp/B07G11VW1Z/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=GDEMU&qid=1555956232&s=gateway&sr=8-2

Lots of 1-star reviews for this one as well. Like with everything retro gaming, it's never easy and YMMV ;-)

u/beaktastic · 1 pointr/dreamcast

I cant tell from looking at the Akura box, does it need a VGA cable or those composite cables? I think I have some of the composite cables but I'm not totally sure? Looking around on amazon I think this wire is the type Im missing to plug it in to the VGA box adaptor thing I got the other week, but not sure and dunno if thats the best option or not?

I just want what ever will work and will be easiest really.

u/mrneo240 · 1 pointr/dreamcast
