Well I will be honest - her diet is very very wrong and she is severely overweight right now. You need to take immediate measures.

http://www.therabbithouse.com/diet/rabbit-weight.asp - this visual guide will help you monitor progress.

An overweight bunny is prone to very bad illnesses, and also they cannot clean themselves well so flystrike (where flies burrow into the skin around the area they poop and pee from) is a real danger... be sure you check her bottom.

YOU MUST CHANGE HER DIET as it is very inappropriate!

STOP FEEDING BREAD AND CHECKERS! No offense by why would we feed that??? Human carbs are horrible for bunnies and never to be given. Stop feeding treats and candy! Rabbits cannot have candy, and special candy sold by idiotic stores to make profit on you is junk - no yogurt drops or cookies or crackers!!!! There are healthy treats I will suggest, but until she has lost weight stay away from those 100% - sugar in general is terrible for their GI systems.

The correct diet for an adult bunny is - UNLIMITED hay, 1/4 cup MAX of pain pellets per day (not colorful bits or seed in them), 1 to 2 cups of green leafy veggies. Carrot, kale, and fruit only as occasional very small treats. No yogurt drops or processed sugars, no human crabs, oats, bread etc. No seeds or nuts.

Proper diet:

  1. Unlimited hay - good quality unlimited hay should always be available.

    1. Hay should be timothy or orchard. Never alfalfa - alfalfa is to rich for an adult and also causes kidney stones.
    2. This should be 90% of her diet!
  2. Pellets - 1/4th cup per day MAX - that is 4 tablespoons! Stand your ground!
    1. In your case I would not feed any until she has lost some weight... for a servery overweight bunny like this a pellet free diet is appropriate and later you can slowly introduce.
    2. Pellets should not be alfalfa - look at the ingredients, if alfalfa is first or second, you have to change the brand.
    3. Also a good brand is very important - pellets should be PLAIN without any of the colorful bits like treats, dried fruit, cereals, nuts and seeds. All these for bunnies are like junk food to humans (yes pet stores 100% don't care and just sell the stuff that looks the best to unsuspecting customers) and excess sugar and carbs can cause major issues for bunny's very delicate digestive system by disrupting the bacteria balance and also cause weight gain. Try to select the pellet brand higher is fiber and lower in protein and fat. Look at the ingredients and select a product that has hay/grass listed at the very top of the list and has as few other ingredients (such as oats, cereals, meals, flour, soy, etc) as possible. All of these are "extra" additives that fill up the space in bunny's tummy and result in less hay consumption also.

      1. http://www.therabbithouse.com/diet/rabbit-food-comparison.asp - brand comparison here to select the brands that fit the parameters the best (note that fat should only be 1.5% to 2% for a normal bun, not 5% like they specify).
      2. https://www.amazon.com/Oxbow-Animal-Health-Essentials-Food-10lbs/dp/B003SLLF48/ref=sr_1_2?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1538070583&sr=1-2&keywords=oxbow%2Brabbit%2Bfood&th=1- these are quite good, easy to find and used a lot of people
    4. Greens - 1 to 2 cups per day (or 1 to 2 platefuls)
      1. These are ok to give in moderation and needed!
      2. Selecting the right greens is key - greens should be green, as for example some veggies like peppers and carrots are high in sugar and should only be given as small treats, not daily veggies.
      3. Try dark leafy greens like arugula, romaine lettuce, spring mix, spinach, celery, carrot greens, bok choy; also, fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro, oregano, dill, mint, basil. Kale (only give in limited quantities).
      4. The best way it to rotate veggies from day to day so the bunny gets a variety of nutrients.
      5. This list has great insights https://rabbit.org/suggested-vegetables-and-fruits-for-a-rabbit-diet/.
    5. Treats -
      1. Avoid these until she has lot weight - use fresh herbs as treats for now
      2. Treats should be small potions and occasional, not with every meal ---->>> fruit + carrot is a treat so give in small amounts - about 2 thumbs width of banana is one portion, a couple raspberries or blueberries, 1 mid sized strawberry, one larger grape, 1 baby carrot, etc. if you give dried fruit - give less at the concentration of sugar is higher.
      3. Never give any processed foods like yogurt drops

As she looses weight also encourage her to be more active:

  3. Stuff hay and veggies into empty egg cartons for her to forage'
  4. Give pellets via a treat ball so she has to move to eat or this DIY one.
  5. Get her a cat tree to jump on to as they love climbing

I trained Rocky the EXACT same way I trained my dog growing up, and he responded beautifully.

He used to do the normal rabbit habit (lol that's a rhyme) of chewing on cords and/or remote control buttons, but I did what I did with my dog growing up:

I put him on the couch with wires and remote controls in reach, and, every time he would make a move towards them, I'd say in a strict, sharp voice "NO!"

Then, as soon as he backed away from the remote/cord (or didn't attack it), I'd lavish him with praise and rubbies/pets.

Afte a while, he learned the routine, and now he no longer destroys stuff besides his toys.

If your rabbit is a big chewer, definitely keep a stock of Timothy Hay Cubes on hand (if you don't already!).

This "like a dog" training also helped me to teach Rocky to learn/know his name, come when called, etc...

Further, make sure to always push the "comfort zone" boundaries with your bun. I've constantly held and played and messed and rubbed and grabbed Rocky in every conceivable way every single day, to the point where he now knows that I can mess with him to no end and it'll never cause him harm, so I can do whatever I want to him.

He lets me do it all, even stuff most rabbits tend not to enjoy, like he loves when I hold and massage and rub his back feet/toes!

The food in the picture is not appropriate for rats. The pellets are alfalfa and rats won't don't like them. I don't know of any seed/grain mixes in the US that are any good. I'd probably avoid a mix and get a pellet/kibble instead. I'd suggest feeding them something like Oxbow Essentials. It's about $11 for a 3 lb bag that should last about a month and a half.

Your rats don't look malnourished.

u/flagrant_armadillo · 8 pointsr/RATS

I just ordered this stuff. It has rave reviews:

Oxbow Regal Rat Food

*If you read the reviews make sure to sort them by most recent. The formula has changed so that rats find it tastier in addition to being very healthy

Whatever you decide to get, please don't buy from a pet store. Look for a rescue or a reputable breeder instead. Rat/hamster/guinea pig mills are just as bad as puppy/kitten mills.

If you want to know more about these mills and ruin your day, go here and here.

Reputable breeders will be working to reduce the instances of respiratory infections, tumors, etc in the lines they breed, which saves you money on vet bills in the long run. Rescues can give you a health history and also let you know about the individual animal's personality, as well. You can look for adoptable small animals on Petfinder.

But back to your question, I would definitely vote for rats over hamsters (having owned both), especially if there will be young children around.

I would not leave them for 1-3 days without having someone at least drop by to check on them 1-2 times a day. That's way too long if something goes wrong (for example, if they push all the food out of the cage, or if a water bottle fails, or if they fall and injure themselves inside the cage, etc).

Free roaming is great if you can fully rat-proof the area (or hamster-proof, guinea pig-proof, etc). No wires on the floor, no questionable things they might eat, no small holes in the wall they could squeeze into, and so on. If you can't provide that, then enclosing a safe space would be the better option. I used the bathroom as a free ranging space for a while until I had a fully rat-proofed room for mine to roam.

In addition to the great info that triskadancer provided, I want to add a few things...

A good lab block means, not Kaytee. The top three I know of are Oxbow Regal Rat, Mazuri's Rodent Breeder 6F, and Harlan Teklad/Native Earth (there are different varieties, you want the higher protein for babies and lower protein for adults).

Rats tend to live 2-3 years, in my experience. 3 years is awesome, 4 is just short of miraculous. None of my rats lived much past 2 years. However, I had males and I believe females tend to live a little longer.

You can reduce females' risk of tumors by getting them spayed.

Rats are sensitive to dusty bedding, and it is never safe to use pine or cedar (this goes for hamsters, too).

u/Robbotlove · 6 pointsr/LilGrabbies

I'd say so. I have 8 boys in a critter nation. They're (somewhat) litter trained but i do a spot clean every day. that takes only about 10 minutes. And i do a big clean on the weekends which is just the spot clean plus throwing the fleece liners in the washing machine. I give them a few scoops of Oxbow Rat food with a few scoops of brown rice in the morning, and some mixed veggies at night. And of course treats. But i try not to over feed them with the treats.

But, there are all kinds of cage options. Obviously you wouldnt need the cage mentioned above having like 2 or 3 rats. (but you must have more than 1 rat otherwise they get depressed and lonely).

u/csmith2019 · 6 pointsr/ferrets

No that is absolutely terrible for him. Corn, gluten, rice, wheat are not biologically appropriate for him.
This is one of the best foods you can give him Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 Digestive Support - Dry Ferret Food - 5 Pound Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019W9VXZK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_J8sDDbJTEZD49

Just mix it in very slowly until he’s used to it. Only add a little more each day to slowly shift the ratio towards the new food.

u/larryruger · 6 pointsr/ferrets

I was in the same position about a month a go. I feed my fuzzies: Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 Digestive Support - Dry Ferret Food. I just started mixing it with the old food 1/2 & 1/2 for a few days reducing the Marshal food little by little until they were eating just the Wysong Epigen, The switch when seamless.

u/sixgunangoras · 4 pointsr/Rabbits

Just remember Amazon is a good resource, but you will way over pay and the quality is often very low.

This food would actually be bad for your rabbit
https://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Timothy-Complete-Rabbit-9-5-lb/dp/B00BAQYO00/ref=pd_aw_lpo_199_bs_img_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=PW7ZX1JBMRC0F2FWJMX8

I encourage you to Google "feed store" or "feed mill" near you. I go through 100# of feed a week, I could never afford to feed at pet store prices. I pay $16 for 50# of a very good feed for my Angora show rabbits.

u/K8af48sTK · 4 pointsr/RATS

As /u/Sykirobme mentioned, I would suggest using a prepared food as a base diet and adding a supplemental vegetables on top of that.

I haven't had a lot of experience getting rats to change diets, but we adopted an older male a couple of years ago who had no real problem with the switch.

Us: Oh yeah, all of ours love Cheerios as a treat!

Previous Owner: No, all he eats is Cheerios.

Us: Oh ...

Even though he had been fed only plain Cheerios for over a year, it only took a few days to convince him to try triangles (Oxbow Regal Rat Food). After he realized that other foods existed, he even started turning down Cheerios in favor of fruit and vegetable treats. (The other rats thought he was insane and were happy to take the extra Cheerios.)

Rats are wonderful little companions, and fairly easy to care for. Keep them happy and healthy, and they'll repay you by loving you like crazy.

This is a good guide that will help you understand what your rats are doing and why, and explains some of the ways rats communicate with each other and with you.

Here's a list of foods that are safe to give to your rats. Enriching your rats' diet with fresh fruits and vegetables is important to their health, and they love it. If you buy packaged treats from the store, make sure you get one that doesn't contain dried corn, as that can be harmful.

For their food, I recommend Oxbow brand. It's very good nutritionally, and my girls love the taste. For two rats, one bag will usually last several weeks.

For their cage, you'll want something that gives them plenty of space to go about their business. Generally, the rule is 2 cubic feet per rat. So for two, try to find something that's at least 4 cubic feet. Use paper bedding as opposed to wood shavings, as wood shavings can cause respiratory problems.

You should also get some accessories for the cage to keep them entertained, such as a house, a hammock, things to climb, and some toys. All can be found at most pet stores and is pretty inexpensive.

If you decide to go for it, I think you'll be very happy with rats. And if you do, be sure to share a picture of your new babies with us here!

u/Gezzer52 · 3 pointsr/hamster

My recommendation is not to use a seed mix as they're only food source, and use a good quality pellet as the main food with possibly a small amount of a seed mix (no pellets) occasionally as a treat.

If your hamsters are being fussy it can be for a couple of reasons, a poor quality mix with too many cheap sweet fillers (poor quality corn for example) and poor quality pellets or over feeding.

In nature hamsters are omnivorous and foragers. Which means that they have an extremely vaired diet in the wild and eat many things they "stumble" across as they forage.

They also live in multi-chamber burrows with a number of lauders they store food in for later. They'll often choose better quality/more perishable/tastier food first and leave less desirable food for leaner times. So if they're being overfed you'll see the behaviour you're describing.

The major problem with this behaviour is the fact that they will most likely not get full nutrition eating in this manner and is why I go with a good quality pellet that's been formulated to meet all/most of their needs as my main food for my hammies.

I've had really good luck with this as the main food and then give approved treats daily as well. Most pellet mixes are low in the protein level that hamsters need. But that need varies with a high of 20-25% when growing to more like 15-17% when elderly. So giving additional protein off the list as a treat is a good idea especially when they're younger.

The other thing about using the "nicer" foods as treats as they work really well as a training tool. If you only give them pellets and the occasional seed mix, you can hand feed them the treats which gets them used to your presence and smell quicker in a positive way.

Edit: a word

Gah. That stuff. When I started feeding Professor Bunbun the Kaytee Timothy Pellets I noticed his poops started having this strong, kind of stinky, oniony smell. I asked the vet and she recommended switching him to the Oxbow Timothy Pellets. The smell went away after switching over and hasn't returned since. A lot of pellets are marketed towards breeders (according to what I have read) and don't have the House Rabbit Society recommended nutritional value. I looked around but didn't see much that was promising other than the Oxbow and Kaytee. I don't recommend alfalfa pellets. (Neither does my vet.)

u/StargateGuy · 3 pointsr/RATS

MidWest Critter Nation Single Level, two level optional depending on budget.

u/speakstruth · 3 pointsr/Rabbits

Technically rabbits don't need pellets. Pellets are really just ground up hay with added supplements and fillers. The hay is what's more concerning to me.

What do her poops look like? Here's our photo guide to determining healthy rabbit poops. So long as her poops don't look small and/or stringy, she might be getting enough fiber from her veggies and I wouldn't overly worry about it.

How long have you had her?

I suggest leaving hay around and perhaps tossing some herbs - either dried or fresh - into the mix to encourage her to eat. Fresh dandelion (make sure they haven't been sprayed with pesticides) can also be very tempting. Some bunnies also really like hay blocks (basically pressed hay). I have no idea why this is different to them than non-pressed hay but they seem to treat them more like treats than the stuff in the litter box.

You might also want to add in some hay supplements to increase her fiber intake and if you're worried about her nutritional content. The oxbow ones are pretty good and my rabbits tend to think they're treats as well.

What kinds of hay have you tried? Some rabbits are picky eaters. If you've tried timothy, perhaps orchard or oat would be good options? Oat shouldn't be a "main" hay but might be a good starting point to introduce the concept.

I wouldn't recommend letting her get into the water. Rabbits rely on their undercoat staying dry in order to maintain their body temperature. Once the undercoat is wet, they lose that insulation and can easily die of pneumonia. Make sure to dry her off very thoroughly if she does end up getting wet.

Good luck!

Hi there. Congratulations on your new boys! I love Rex rats! I've been a ratty mom for over 12 years. I currently have 3 males, all dumbos, one of which is a Rex. The best advice I can give is to make sure to socialize your new babies and let them get used to you, your environment, as well as each other. (I'm glad to hear you got more than one!) Pouches are a great start for that, so you are definitely on the right track. I love playing around and interacting with my boys, but I also make sure to sit back and let them explore on their own, too.

Having a good cage is crucial. I recently got space pods and they love them! Having it be plastic instead of fabric cuts down on smell, too. I always make sure they have a bunch of things to chew on and play with. Make sure they have good bedding as well. I use recycled newspaper and crinkle paper.

Diet plays a big role. I feed my guys mostly Mazuri blocks and Oxbow with some vegetables (they love broccoli and frozen peas). I try to stay cognizant of treats, since they're mostly sugar and fat. (Males are prone to weight gain, so you gotta watch out.) Fruits work really well as a treat for training.

If you have any questions as you guys get adjusted, feel free to PM me.

(Also, sorry all the hyperlinks are to Amazon haha. It's what Google pulls up.)

Congratulations again :)

u/Floonet · 3 pointsr/RATS

I want to say thank you for being receptive to rattit's collective knowledge.

Definitely agree with all that was said by /u/durshka

To add to what has been said:

I'm not sure what country you are in, but in the US there are some great rat feeds. It's crucial you give them this, because rats will pick through seeds and take the carb/sugar loaded things over the protein vitamin stuff. (they are like people)

Oxbow is pretty standard and they look like this you do not want to get stuff like this as their main feed. They will pick through all the good bits (pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, peanuts, dried peas) and leave the fiber which they need. I do have a bag of this and use it as treats!

PLENTY OF FRESH VEG! also remember to wash the veg and fruit off well if you are going non-organic. Pesticides are truly harmful especially to rats which in comparison to us are TINY!

Give them a bit of chicken or tuna etc from time to time. I usually share what I'm eating with them if it's healthy.

Another good treat (and a good way to administer medicine if ever needed) is baby food. Mine love the sweet potato, squash, peas one!

When picking out a cage try and get one with at least 2 floors. Meaning they can climb and have different areas. Rats are super smart, and need space to keep it interesting. Also make sure the flooring of the shelves and ramps is not wired steel, and that it has plating. The bottom can be as long as you have enough bedding on the bottom. Rats can get bumblefoot from wired flooring.

A CAGE LIKE THIS IS IDEAL it's tall rather than wide, which they love!

u/CrmdZillaDeeKilla · 3 pointsr/RATS

I share my morning oatmeal with him and he loves almonds but I can not get him to eat any fruit... He absolute favorite treat is kale though. This is the food he eats https://www.amazon.com/Oxbow-Regal-Rat-Food-3-Pound/dp/B000GABM1K is it good?

u/gigarob · 3 pointsr/ferrets

I feed my girl this mixed half and half: Wysong Ferret Digestive Support and Orijen Cat and Kitten. It's healthy and she seems to really like it and she seldom has bad poos (all ferrets have occasional jelly poos).

My old guy, who passed away several years ago, had digestive issues his whole life and the Wysong really helped him a lot.

u/Lostar · 3 pointsr/RATS

I get a big bag of the Oxbow Regal Rat and split it into an air tight bin and the freezer. I suppliment that with fresh fruits/veggies/yogurt every day, and a couple yogies because they lose their minds for them. For my older guy, I'll mix some Critical Care a couple times a week to ensure that he's getting the nutrition he needs and to (try) to keep his weight up.

The Regal Rat kibble keeps very well in the freezer, so buying in bulk isn't an issue. I am in no way related to or a shill for Oxbow, they're just the best rat diet out there

I feed my ferrets the wysong ferret epigen 90 digestive support. You can get it on Amazon here:

Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 Digestive Support - Dry Ferret Food - 5 Pound Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019W9VXZK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_DM9QybAWSR9YB

I did have to mix it in with the Marshall food they give the ferrets at petco. I just mixed it 50/50 and gradually added less of the Marshall food. It took about 2 weeks to get them off the Marshall food.

u/MotherCybele · 2 pointsr/Pets

Look for Oxbow pellets. They have great products and are highly recommended in the bunny/ guinea pig keeper's community.

u/ozthethird · 2 pointsr/singapore

Hamster feed is another interesting topic to note. Most hamster food is supposedly full of stuff which is unhealthy for hamsters. Most people swear by oxbow hamster food.

My hamster hates pellet food, he leaves them untouched. So instead i got him something else. I ended up on this after i trying to look for something with enough variety to entertain him.

I am actually quite interested with what other people feed their small ones as its not immediately obvious to me.

u/ChurchyG · 2 pointsr/ferrets

I'd say either Wysong, raw, or most premium kitten food! From my knowledge Blue Buffalo works well if you're going the kitten food route, and can also be found at most pet stores easily (Or, if you're lucky, it can be found at a grocery store), just be sure whatever you get doesn't have grain. Wysong is the best specifically ferret food I know of and can be found on Amazon ( https://www.amazon.com/Wysong-Ferret-Epigen-Digestive-Support/dp/B019W9VXZK/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=ferret&qid=1554951902&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-2 ), and I'm afraid I know little to nothing about raw feeding, but heard its an ideal ferret diet, but Wysong also offers a raw option (Chicken: https://www.amazon.com/Wysong-Ferret-Archetype-Chicken-Formula/dp/B00L72JUYC/ref=sr_1_46?keywords=ferret&qid=1554953171&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-46 )! Hope this helped!

I wish I knew. All I did was play w them every day and fed them the right food. Started them off on Marshalls but after some research went with https://www.amazon.com/In-Ultimate-Advanced-Nutrition-4-4-Pound/dp/B007SZ7VX4 but it seems that is not available anymore so I switched to https://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Ferret-Diet-Chicken-4-lb/dp/B00W898J1S (I have to check at home but I think the one I get has a bit more fat). I gave them the marshall treats all the time too. Also gave them that Duck Soup you can buy in Petco etc.

Phil had Waardenburg syndrome and went completely bald at 3. Got him his shots and his hair grew back but unfortunately it took its toll on him. I let a neighbors dog in one day and next thing I know Pheebe is sick and and died very quickly. I forget the name but there is some disease dogs have thats fine for them but is very lethal for ferrets.

Basically I just made sure to play w them every day, feed them right and love them I guess is the trick. I definitely spoiled them all. Cage was always open. I always had one or 2 or 3 in my lap while they were napping. Gave them a bath every 2 months at least. Tons of toys. I went a little crazy w toys. Probably would buy them each 1 new toy a month. Wound up w box's full over the years. They got tons of exercise. Pretty sure if Phil didn't have Waardenburg's and I didn't let that dam dog in my house the other 2 would have lived a lot longer as well.

Prevue Hendryx 485 Pet Products Feisty Ferret Home with Stand, Black Hammertone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000QFMYWQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Z3fTAbKVAZCK9
this only works for male rats and for like 3 month olds because they can slip through the bars otherwise. i put carpets and blankets in them- but I wash the carpets and blankets every week! I cut up a plastic drain pipe and put it throughout the cage but wash all those every week. they can be litter trained for pooping but peeing is what it is. They constantly clean themselves so they themselves smell pleasant but if you don’t clean the cage once a week it’ll smell like pee. otherwise they really don’t smell just clean once a week at least. the blankets and hammocks and carpets are way cheaper than the actual bedding in the long run and you can only use particular bedding with rats anyways. get only same sex pairs. girls are always in heat and are hyper while males sleep all day and are more cuddly.

I can’t seem to find any with that much protein but I’ll keep looking. I found the digestive support Wysong on Amazon but it doesn’t ship to the UK unfortunately. There is this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wysong-Ferret-Epigen-90-Pound-x/dp/B00J4QWYHI it’s 60% protein. What do you think? I would definitely order this if its any good, although it’s quite expensive compared to the other kibbles but that’s not an issue. It will apparently take a long time to deliver tho.

u/ferrethelppls · 2 pointsr/ferrets

You can get them on the Wysong site. Here for the Epigen 90 with digestive support and here for the archetype. They have decent shipping speeds, but it's like $15 dollars to ship. So I usually buy from amazon with free shipping. Epigen and rabbit

I tried a tub from Lowe's that was just a tiny bit too big but the Home Depot tub was a perfect fit, even though they are basically the same thing. I went with that rather than the Bass pans mostly due to cost. The cage is definitely huge and roomy; my rats (I only have two) love double layer hammocks, though they usually sleep on the top level of them. Baskets, hides, etc. are great for them. The tub really doesn't take up enough floor space to worry about, imo. Plus, the cage can be repurposed in the future for other small animals as well!

I buy the "yogurt treat" things that Gerber makes for babies as the yogis made for animals can be high in sugar from what I understand. I used Oxbow till I got a batch the boys refused to eat so I tried the Harlan Teklad (sp?) blocks which were ok, and then found another brand on Amazon which they LOVE and will go for before either of the other two. They love whole wheat pasta; Sam will gingerly take a single piece while Frodo will stuff his cheeks like he thinks he's a hamster! They didn't care for the dried fruit treats I got them once, I think it was freeze dried berries? They do love baby food (turkey/beef/chicken, apples, other fruit) and peas in a bowl of water (I use frozen peas). They enjoy a variety of chew toys and sometimes millet plumes (make sure it's not the orange scented ones for birds, yuck) and oat sprays. They're my first rats and it's a huge difference from the mice, hamsters, and hedgehog I've had before. They're SO smart!

> Just don't buy their food!!

Oh my god I bought Kaytee food. :( What brand of food should I get? It was the only one I saw in the petstore.

Edit: I bought this brand because it was all I could find - I looked at the Nutrition Information and I think the protien is a bit high for rats?

u/ecofriend94 · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

{{Do me a favor an try this sample box for her https://shop.smallpetselect.com/products/sampler-box - this hay is from a farm and not a bag in the store or online so it is very very fresh and fragrant. It also has a few kind of hay for her to try. Please give a go... I really have seen bunnies who hate hate love this hay.

You an also try this product form the UK, more expensive in the US but from what I have seen buns love it, so mixing some in his hay I think will help https://www.amazon.com/Friendly-Readigrass-Percent-Natural-Feed/dp/B003JRC1VM }}

I’d try different brands of hay next. If you only tried oxbow I’d try another brand.

I’d also keep try mixing in bunny-safe herbs. Mix the herbs in the hay. Mixing the veggies in with the hay. Mixing the pellets with the hay. Don’t feed anything unless it’s mixed in the hay. She might start eating it if it’s the only place she gets food. So when she’s in between meals she will remember that she got food in her hay and might search for more/hopefully eat some along the way.

Oxbow Regal Rat is the one for adult rats; here it is on Amazon. Block food (you'll also hear this referred to as "lab blocks" sometimes) that's intended for rats has a better nutritional balance for them, plus since each piece is the same, they won't be able to preferentially eat the fattier or sweeter bits.

u/UziFoo · 2 pointsr/RATS

The stuff you're feeding them has too much water and can give them wet tail in large amounts. Get some rat food from your pet shop. They won't over eat if you keep their bowl full all the time. My rats always have food available, they only eat when they are hungry. You can give them all the stuff you've been giving them as treats.

I get my rats this stuff, a bag lasts a long time. From what I've seen a lot of pet stores sell that.

I use Oxbow: http://www.amazon.com/Oxbow-Regal-Rat-Food-3-Pound/dp/B000GABM1K

I don't know anything about the food you're using now; you can probably finish out the bag without a problem, though I defer to those with more ratty nutritional knowledge than I.

Definitely read those two series first. :)

I should have mentioned that the block food we use is 'the triangle stuff', aka Oxbow. But as you said, there are a whole lot of options.

u/Virixiss · 1 pointr/RATS

Howdy! First off, let me thank you for doing research before you pick up your rodent friend.

First off let me get the disclaimers out of the way: If you were looking for a cheap pet, you have chosen the wrong animal. Rats have a fairly high upfront cost that begins to taper down after the first 3 months or so once the major growth period is over with. Almost any attempt to cut costs on things I'll bring up as essentials is most likely going to end up as a bad move in terms of your pet's health. There are lots of places to save some money, but what I'll lay out here is not the place. Rats are also a very short lived pet. They will live for a reasonable maximum of 3 years, so there will be heartbreak down the road.

Still interested? Good. Let's get a list going then:

  1. Rats must be kept in a group. A pair is the minimum, three or more is better. Rats are VERY social animals, and need near constant interaction for other rats to stay healthy. This isn't just about mental health either; a lone rat is more prone to infections, tumors, and mental disabilities including aggression. Keeping multiple rats is no more expensive than keeping a single rat.

  2. When looking for a cage, aim for 2 sq. feet per rat. Use this cage calculator to see if your cage is big enough. Watch your bar spacing! Rats are master escape artists, so make sure that the bars won't bend, and that you have 1/2" inch bar spacing or less. Popular starter cages include the Critter Nation Single or the Prevue Hendryx Rat/Chinchilla Cage. The Critter Nation is the most popular rat cage by far, but I can vouch for the Prevue Hendryx as easy to clean and set up.

  3. Food can get pretty complicated for a first time owner, so I'll just offer easy suggestions. Feed Mazuri , Native Earth , or Oxbow. Oxbow is the most popular and most balanced, but tends to be the most expensive in smaller bags. In bulk, (20+ pound bags) the price is all about the same. I buy large bags because it's cheaper per pound and I never worry about running out. Then again I have 5 rats, so my situation is different than yours!

  4. Lots of toys and hiding places! This is where you can save money by getting creative. Store bought rat toys can get expensive, but cardboard tubes and boxes are often free! Have one hiding place per rat plus one, preferably on different levels of the cage. Hammocks are a favorite hide for rats, as are boxes, bags, and tubes. If you want to get some store bought stuff, see if you have a bird shop in your area. Almost every toy in there that is safe for birds is going to be a blast for your rats.

  5. Find a vet that is comfortable with rats. Rats don't need shots or regular flea treatments, so finding a vet can seem odd. But eventually, something will go wrong, or one of your babies will fall ill. Having a vet who's experienced with rats or at the very least willing to learn is a godsend. I'm very lucky to have a vet that is familiar with and loves rats. Because of their size and common problems, rat visits are usually very cheap when compared to a dog or a cat. I spend no more than $45 when Juniper or Sugar have a myco flareup.

  6. Don't stop researching. Subscribe to this sub. Check the side bar. Ask questions. (Feel free to PM me, I'll help you as much as I can..) Watch videos on YouTube, like The Rat Guru. Rats are a very "addictive" pet, and it's easy to fall into an obsession with the cute little boogers.

  7. Post pictures when you get them.

My Syrian hamster has been very happy in this cage for the entire first year of his life so far. After a few days of exploratory climbing he has not once chewed on his bars or ever acted stressed because he wants out of his home.

Bathing and Natural Nail Trimming:
Also pick up some flat Reptile Rocks for underneath his water bottle so he will trim his nails naturally and a large ceramic bowl (needs to be deep not so much wide) filled with Repti Sand Desert White (No Calcium) http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-ReptiSand%C2%AE-Pounds-Desert/dp/B0002DIZKC/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1462213181&sr=1-1&keywords=desert+white+repti+sand

My hamster is a fan of these Apple Orchard sticks for teeth filing though his lab blocks are semi hard and also good for dental health trimming.

After you get those things pick up this item as a natural grass burrow for him to sleep in and clean his cage once every week. Plastic burrow are just awful for air circulation, and my hamster never liked them at all when i didnt know any better.

For food I feed my hamster Higgins Sunburst and Kaytee Forti Diet Lab blocks everyday with fresh fruit and veggies every two days. Remember your hamster stomach is the size of your pinky finger nail so portion small. He loves 3-4 lab blocks a day with a small spoonful of nuts, seeds and fruit from the Higgins. Remember though 3 Sunflower Seeds max a day or they will get fat and unhealthy.

http://www.amazon.com/Higgins-Sunburst-Gourmet-Hamsters-Gerbils/dp/B009GHII5W/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1462213536&sr=1-1&keywords=higgins+sunburst

Looks like this but for Hamster not rat and mice:
http://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Forti-Health-Mouse-5-Pound/dp/B001VJ56Z8/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1462213507&sr=1-1&keywords=kaytee+forti+hamster

For bedding you want UNSCENTED (it messes with their respiratory system if its scented) this Kaytee Clean and Cozy is what I use. Absorbs liquid good and keeps the smell down if its close to cleaning day.

http://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Clean-Cozy-Small-Bedding/dp/B015MJB8PO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1462214215&sr=1-2&keywords=kaytee+bedding

and last but not least. Buy TWO water bottles in case one of them jams overnight you DO NOT want your hamster to suffer from dehydration. They do not need much water, but when they need it, they need it fast or will get sick quick. The kaytee water bottles have issues with the spout pointing straight so buyer beware. They often dont align properly into the cage bars. But they do work and dont leak for me. Stick with GLASS water bottles, it just tastes better honestly. 6 ounces if you will change the water daily. 12 ounces if you are not as attentive.

http://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-SSR61982-Animal-Bottle-12-Ounce/dp/B007TUNWM2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1462214981&sr=8-4&keywords=kaytee+water+bottle

It seems like a lot of money at first and it is but this hamster will be your new furry friend and relies on only you to care for it, so give it the best and longest life possible. You will have one happy hamster if you get all that and will never need to upgrade anything when your Syrian grows bigger.

u/UrbanDryad · 1 pointr/gifs

I just want to second what u/xanaxiss mentioned. It starts with the food. I feed my pair Wysong and put this in their water daily. You can't smell them unless you pick them up and hold them 6" from your face.

And if you drizzle this stuff on their food they will eat anything. Sawdust. Broken glass. Doesn't matter. Ferret crack right there.

Oh, and don't try to clean the ferret. They just make more oil the more you bathe them. Put a ton of bedding in their cage. At least a few different kinds of hammock. I also throw in a wadded up blanket or two. (Go buy fleece fabric remnants at a fabric store. Super cheap.) They rub the oil from their coat off onto the bedding and they stay clean. Wash the bedding at least once a week on hot with bleach, add vinegar to the rinse water like fabric softener. Bathe no more than once a month with a ferret specific shampoo. In between you can hit them with a freshening spray if desired.

u/moondamnedmoon · 1 pointr/RATS

Oxbow is a REALLY good rat food, just make sure you get the adult food, not the young rat food (full of corn). Another thing you can get from Amazon is Harlan Teklad lab blocks, which make an excellent base meal. I buy a huge bag of it and put most of it in the freezer, where it will last basically forever. My rats eat mostly Oxbow and get a Harlan Teklad lab block apiece, every day, and in the evenings I supplement with something more exiting--a pasta dish, fresh veggies, some cooked chicken with the bones still in, etc. ;) It's very hard to build a rat diet from the ground up, so I definitely recommend getting a good commercial rat food and/or lab block to make sure your boys are getting all the nutrients they need!

Be careful not to go overboard with the protein with your boys. Too much can cause a buildup of buck grease, as well as lead to hairloss, itchiness, and scabs--uncomfortable AND unattractive. ;P Also, NEVER feed your boys citrus! it's fine for female rats, but can cause kidney failure in male rats. You should mix up the fruits, vegetables, etc. that you feed them, too, because too much of any one thing can really mess with them. For instance, dark leafy greens/broccoli/etc. are good in moderation, but can cause diarrhea if fed too often.

yea, just spent the last few hours cleaining their pens, dumping everything, and putting a nice layer of dust all over it and letting it settle before letting the buns back in.

girlfriend bathed them in dust, well more like gently applied to them and avoided face as we know no one should breath that stuff in just in case. that way any mites on them will die off.

going to make a vett appt tomorrow, nail trimming, teeth filing and checkup to see if they have mites or ticks.

sigh..

time to dip into the savings account. why us, why now? where did those come from?!

like i said, i noticed a few of these things on the box of hay we have. I dusted that thing and around it last night, and then covered it in a garbage bag and took that to the dumpster too.

We usually get this hay as its been recomended: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A7QG8IU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

but someone here suggested this brand: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CJ2FRNC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 so we are going to get that next just in case.

the hay we always got, was always fine, but then again im not even 100% sure those things came FROM that hay. we were fine for a month or so and then started seeing those things crawling around...they seem to have just appeared out of nowhere.

I have a feeling my girlfriend brought them back form her parents house, that place is FILTHY, like a hoarders house. She had to babysit for her parents sugargliders for a week, she took one of the pens with the rex to be with him that week, and we brought back the dwarf bunny her parents were taking care of.

So maybe it came from that bun, however her parents usually are real good about taking it to the vet and keeping it clean, but their house looks like a disaster. so those things probably were all over the pens at that house and brought back here. ugggh

were still seeing one or two of them here and there as I kill them when i see them, hopefully they will slowly become extinct.

  1. This because F drinking out of a fancy glass. I would be able to walk around in public getting sloshed and no one would be the wiser...Until I fell or flashed my boobs.

  2. Because animals eat this stuff for reals. I think that is how the scarecrow in Wizard of Oz lost his brains. Those evil evil rabbits and birds.

  3. I don't need no stinking "hold all the heat in, til my head feels like a sauna" hat thing. I prefer cute bandanas and these for keeping cooler and my hair out of my nose and eyes. Sexy I know.

  4. Books are paper filled with smart stuff, money is paper filled with power and importance.

  5. I put these on my car to decorate the trunk of my car where indecently trunks could go.

  6. I would use this to perfectly fasten my cape so I it would look awesome and hopefully not catch on anything and potentially kill me.

My vet recommends this for my boys and it's been great. They think it's a treat and they have had a lot more energy since we switched. The only problem is that the food sometimes gets stuck on the roof of their mouth but it isn't that big of a problem. It's cheaper than most premium ferret foods as well.
