So Albert, our castrated male bunny, has been out on a little adventure that started Friday or late Thursday. He lives in a hutch that he shares with his friend, our girl bunny Lili, on a grassy area behind the garages belonging the apartment buildings we live in. Lili loves digging and there been multiple holes around the bottom part of the hutch (the hutch is this model). So we suspect that Albert, who's not an escape-willing bunny, nevertheless squeezed out of one the holes and went exploring.
Friday morning, when I was going to feed both, Albert was nowhere to be found in the hutch, or in the nearby area, where we let them run free under supervision. We looked for Albert for 2 hrs. straight, we posted about his escape on local Facebook groups, in hopes that someone found him and picked him up, maybe going to work Friday morning (we live close to major commuter route in and out of the city). We looked again multiple times later Friday. But we weren't optismic, since a passerby a week earlier mentioned that there are foxes in the area, and they are very active during springtime. Lili seemed a bit introvert and defensive, so something or someone seemed to have scared her and then taken Albert.
Saturday, we looked again, prior to leaving for an out of town wedding, nothing, no signs of him. At this point we hoped but were less optimistic, also taking into account the cold and snowy spring weather we had had during the previous night.
Early this afternoon we returned home. Lili was sitting in the bottom part of the hutch, we looked around the hutch and in the hedge, hoping he might be outside it, nothing. It was not before looking behind Lili and the small mounds of dirt she had dug up, that we saw Albert sitting in the hutch, as if nothing had happened. He seemed a bit thinner, which is fine though, because he has always been "extra fluffy". Our reaction was shear bafflement at what had transpired the last +48 hrs. Where had he been? Who had taken him or let him free and did the same people return him after regretting haven taking him? He's back though, and now we contemplate putting locks on the hutch, to combat bunny-snatching, and we will proactively cover holes near the edge of the hutch.

All rats are different and your experiences with free-ranging will vary depending on the rat. AboutPetRats.com has a decent page on rat-proofing a room. This page also has some helpful tips.

Personally, my experiences were less than desirable. I had one rat find a small hole under the kitchen cabinetry and he hid in the dirty, disgusting wall for a day and a half before coming out. Another rat enjoyed chewing on the wood baseboards and door trim. When I moved from my last place, I discovered their hidden potty spots. I thought they had been using the litter boxes that I left out for them but apparently it wasn't enough. Rats are known as pests because they can do a ton of damage to your home.

I much prefer to keep a walled-off play area for my boys. There are lots of different ways to make rat-safe play areas. Examples; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

Some thoughts for you... Have you considered a 2 story hutch? This one isn't to expensive and you could just get some linoleum or something to put under it. How much space exactly do you have? Can you put an exercise pen with the cage so they have some more space? This is our setup for times of day I can't trust them to free-range (basically if no babysitter is home). I have this hutch and I love it. Its attractive and makes me feel better because it provides my bun a place to hide, hides the litter box, bigger then a xpen, and its secure enough to hold against my parent's dogs. Its not as pretty as yours, but its bigger. Don't listen to the description, mine would only handle two small rabbits tops. No way yours can handle 4. It'd be fine for a holland lop, but if you're thinking about getting a second bun you will have to upgrade. I'd look at getting a bigger one.

edit: You can actually see my review on there. If you try and clean the bottom it will need two people to lift it to get to it. I wouldnt put a litter box or hay on the bottom due to that

How cute! I have no idea if they’re neutered, or spayed. I’m not even sure of their genders. I guess they’re both the same sex, because the people before me have had them for years and no babies.

Thing is I live in a small apartment in Brooklyn NY and their housing needs to look nice because it is going to be in my living room. So X pens will take a lot of effort to make nice and I just don't have the time to invest for that.

I found something that looks nice but it is quite small for two rabbits... Do you think that's fine because they will be free roam or should I continue looking.
