I love this headlamp, and while it's $40 right now, I got mine for $25 on sale.

u/peony_chalk · 12 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

Did your doctor specifically recommend the adhesive nasal strips because they're the superior option, or do you think one of the in-nose varieties like this or this would solve both the breathing and "I don't want adhesive stuck to my face every night for the rest of my life" problems? (Unfortunately, these might exacerbate the attractiveness problem, though.)

I bought the ones in the second link last year, and honestly, I don't love them. Usually if my nose is stuffed up enough for me to use them, it's stuffed up enough that they don't help. They also seem to fall out in the middle of the night half the time, or my subconscious brain instructs my hand to remove them from my nose at 3am. If you're just trying to open your nose a bit wider though, they do indeed serve that function.

I've started sleeping with tape over my mouth using this tape. I think it has increased my wakefulness and reduced how much I need to sleep.

Don't expect miracles, but these can help a bit:

  • Breathe Right strips (I ended up liking a generic knock-off better, but that specific one is no longer available.)
  • nasal vents (This set has 3 different styles. I ended up liking the graduated cones the best.)
  • nasal rinse (like a neti pot)
  • nasal saline drops (these also make it easier to clean out the nose with a Q-tip)

I've tried each of these with some small improvements. Be careful about Afrin and the like as they'll cause a rebound effect.

You might also ask your doctor about fluticasone and azelastine, both of which can be prescribed to help with congestion. (Fluticasone recently came off patent and is available OTC but it will cost more and you probably want a docs input on it anyhow.)

Also, playing with the humidity on your CPAP machine can help. (Oddly enough, I found that very low humidity and cold air helped me, so I was freezing the water chamber. It kept it cold overnight.)

In the end, I gave up on these half measures and got the surgery, but maybe some of these will work better for you.
u/scumteam14 · 3 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

That's a tough one! I did a sub search and the recommendations include:

  • using in-nose breathing aids like this

  • putting a hydrocolloid bandage on your nose and adhering the strip to that instead of directly on the skin

  • trying different varieties, maybe other types use different adhesives that are less bothersome

  • cleaning your nose thoroughly after the strip is removed

  • seeing if an ENT can fix the issue so you don't need to use the strips

Just search for "ruby style chin strap"

Here's one from Amazon.

this is the cheapest thing on my wish list. It's definitely not the cheapest thing out there, but it's the cheapest thing on my list. Thank for the contest!

u/castironfan · 2 pointsr/castiron

I think that's pretty much as good as it gets. I prefer to order lye labeled as 'food grade', but it probably doesn't matter.

This looks promising: https://www.amazon.com/Grade-Sodium-Hydroxide-Micro-Beads/dp/B00YPKD3Z0/ref=sr_1_9_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1525816326&sr=8-9&keywords=lye

Serious answers (my CPAP nasal mask was blowing my mouth open while sleeping; you don't know cotton mouth until every inch of your mouth and throat is so dry you can't even close it).

3M Micropore surgical tape over the mouth (it's serious stuff and quite a challenge to remove in the morning). The trick is to roll your lips in, then apply it.

Also, Sleep Strips by SomniFix might work for you. In fact, if you want to try them, I have a mostly full box I can mail you (they're individually wrapped, like bandages). They didn't work as well for me as the surgical tape ... and I later re-trained myself to sleep with my mouth closed (most nights, at least).

Also, creating suction in your mouth and holding it seems to help somewhat, too.

Now I need to deal with biting my tongue while sleeping; hoping I can manage that without investing in a mouth guard.

u/SkippySnipes · 2 pointsr/snoring

Don't know either concerning SnoreLab, never felt the need to look for something else.

Snoring wise maybe try a week with more activity and less caffeine?

Also here's a link to the product I'm referring.

Kumquat-licious

totoro sticker

Once I went to a couples house to get some mason jars. I'm getting married and wanted to reuse items for decor. The older man was obviously very ill, and I ended up sitting with the couple for 2 hours while they told me their story. They were so in love. As I was pulling out the man mentioned my Totoro sticker. I came back a week later and left the DvD on their door step as thanks for my SUV full of mason jars.

My sticker is old and a cheap version off eBay so I need a new one!

u/louderharderfaster · 2 pointsr/keto

> Well, ever since I just forced myself to breathe thru my nose... I've actually had the clearest breathing I can ever imagine.

I had this exact same experience. I swear my brain fog even cleared before I was in full ketosis.

I get downvoted a lot for mentioning mouth taping but it is not a gimmick.

I use these https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Strips-SomniFix-Breathing-Nighttime/dp/B076CQ1NR8/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1541210807&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=somnifix&psc=1

Thank you for letting me know it is working for you. Makes it worth the downvotes :)

u/fosterrrrr · 2 pointsr/Dentistry

What kind of tape would you recommend? 3M Micropore paper tape or something like this? https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Strips-SomniFix-Breathing-Nighttime/dp/B076CQ1NR8

And do you think there's any benefit to using Flonase to encourage deeper breathing even though I don't have any allergies now?

Update: Used Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape last night (best I could find locally). Didn't have any trouble whatsoever falling asleep or staying asleep. Awoke feeling refreshed, perhaps slightly more refreshed than normal, but not eye-opening, dramatically more refreshed. Wore a DenTek Maximum Protection Dental Guard underneath. It juts out just a little, but I used 2 layers of tape, and I felt like the seal was pretty good. Woke up with a moist mouth. Noticeable saliva on the gums. Though, I will say my throat was a little dry. I might have been biting into the guard a little too much, and the impression might be rubbing on my gums. But that might have been happening anyway, and I suppose it's better to have that friction with a well moistened mouth than a dry one. I'm going to try the tape with a low-profile, disposable Plackers one that needs to be changed out every few days.

Edit: Definitely feel more refreshed, the more I dwell on it. But, could be a placebo effect.

u/Kelseyb · 2 pointsr/funny

If that doesn't work out for you, give these a try. I have narrow nostrils and these help keep my nose open to allow airflow. My husband is so happy I use these.

u/Talamakara · 2 pointsr/CPAP

I personally am a side sleeper as well but will end up on my back before morning.

First suggestion, a very thin pillow, less material for you to sink in. I know some people would hate it, but i couldn't use thick pillows before the cpap.

2nd is this "style" of chin strap. Where it has two point on your head to hold it in place.

u/callalilykeith · 2 pointsr/breakingmom

Ugh I’m sorry health insurance is an issue (I’ve had my experience of not having it for a month and it freaked me out).

The book recommends taping your mouth shut with special tape. I don’t think the book recommends anything specific, but they do make social tape for it:
Sleep Strips by SomniFix - Advanced Gentle Mouth Tape for Better Nose Breathing, Improved Nighttime Sleeping, Less Mouth Breathing, and Instant Snoring Relief - Pack of 28 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076CQ1NR8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_buGzDbM1JB4SA

I almost want to try this for my husband because he snores & sleeps poorly. But I don’t think he would want to pay for a new box every month.

I wonder if there is a cheaper option.

u/Futonpimp · 2 pointsr/SleepApnea

Amazon — there are basically 2 styles.. you’ll see a resmed strap that is very simplistic (I ordered that one and then I ordered this cafe fusion brand one which is what I wore last night)

I had a real problem when I first began CPAP therapy; I was a mouth breather. Chinstraps didn't work for me. I discovered these Chin-up strips which are basically horseshoe-shaped medical tape. After using them for a few months I 'trained' myself to be able to sleep with mouth closed. I have no relation the company other than being a customer. https://www.amazon.com/ChinUp-Strips-snoring-encourage-breathing/dp/B01GN9ZZCO?th=1

Something I would like for myself is this book.

In all seriousness, I was thinking about getting these sleep strips:

https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Strips-SomniFix-Breathing-Nighttime/dp/B076CQ1NR8

They're made for a different purpose, but I think it's exactly what I need! Provides a breathing hole, but keeps you reminded to keep your mouth closed. What do you think?

u/craigjclark68 · 1 pointr/BrainDead

Perhaps a nose clip.

u/elryanoo · 1 pointr/The_Donald

sodium hydroxide they can get pretty much anywhere.

u/Weyl-fermions · 1 pointr/Dentistry

I wonder if a CPAP machine would help you.

They are for preventing sleep apnea. However some (most?) models have a humidifier so the air going in is moist.

You would need to consult a doctor to make sure using this without apnea would not cause any other problems. And you would likely have to pay out of pocket for the machine.

Or maybe something like this?

Respironics Premium Chin Strap by P.R. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008MJW18K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_sV.5xbFNF3RZ7

I'm a big fan of this one. It weighs pretty much nothing, has the red night mode, and you can vary the brightness for battery life vs raw brightness.

I use it for backpacking and working on my car.

u/Arcticsnorkler · 1 pointr/SleepApnea

I trained myself to breath only thru my nose. Took a few months with a chinstrap, called Ruby Red, although I don’t have a beard. Like this one which fit if you tuck the beard back or if it a small/medium beard: CareFusion Ruby Stop Snoring Chin Strap Large - XL https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005HYTVEK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_HGU2DbVNJMH6T

edit: I don’t have a beard

u/GroovyGrove · 1 pointr/castiron

Ok, sounds like I'm overthinking it (typical). I didn't really think "food grade" made sense either, but that is what I saw. Here's an example on Amazon.

u/Keeper_dan · 1 pointr/bodybuilding

My friend and I have a deviated septum. He snores ridiculous. I can't sleep with my mouth open.

If you have a deviated septum, I suggest getting this. I sleep well now. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DKR1AUI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_a2hczbQ8ZV7Y8

u/StillPlaysWithSwords · 1 pointr/CPAP

Really, I thought it was great for side sleepers. Hmmm I am a slide sleeper and don't have any problems. I like how it's super comfortable and really just holds in place just fine. The gel pillows that press against your nostrils felt a little odd the first few times I used it but other masks that go over the entire nose touched the side of my nose and I really don't like that. Only thing I would recommend is using the fabric coverings for the silicone frame (they come with it), for the parts that rest across your upper cheeks. It is also a good mask if you have a mustache; my last mask went over my nose and I had to keep my mustache trimmed really short almost shaved or it broke the seal.

If you need a chinstrap with it I would get a "halo" style like this from amazon because the place where the DreamWear crosses over your head is the same place other chin strips want to be and they interfere with each other.

I have used CPAP for years and have changed my mask style many times. What is comfortable for me might not work for you. I use the DreamWear Gel now, and it is the most comfortable mask I have ever used to date. I buy my masks and supplies from Amazon and Ebay because my insurance doesn't cover anything and they tend to be cheaper than a dedicated CPAP supply store.

I got a really good one from Amazon with adjustable volume and brightness. £15.99. It has a battery backup (not full functionality, but when the electrics go back on, it has the correct time and settings).

My husband, who snores a lot, uses these and they work pretty well

u/lovelystrange · 1 pointr/AskDocs

nasal strips at night make a huge difference

I've also tried these which are good but fall out

And these which were not comfy to me

I think you can't do much else but these products help. Btw a rhinoplasty is generally cosmetic and doesn't fix a deviated septum. You're looking for a septoplasty. I had one but unfortunately was unlucky and it re-deviated back to how it was.

Edit: also a pro tip you can usually see a deviated septum more clearly if you look at the nostrils.

u/WackoJJ · 1 pointr/UCSD

Use mouth tape, prevents mouth breathing and snoring.

u/moridinamael · 1 pointr/slatestarcodex

Yes, these (Amazon). Allegedly you can use relatively cheap paper tape too. I haven't tried it. The ChinUp strips are hypoallergenic which seems like a plus for something I'm going to put on my face every night.

I use this stuff: 3M Micropore Paper Tape - White, 1" x 10yds (Box of 12) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003TXPZ64/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3O-hDbEAYYGSD

It’s cheap, easy to apply/remove, and hasn’t given me any issues around my mouth.

There are products available like this: Sleep Strips by SomniFix - Advanced Gentle Mouth Tape for Better Nose Breathing, Improved Nighttime Sleeping, Less Mouth Breathing, and Instant Snoring Relief - Pack of 28 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076CQ1NR8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_IQ-hDbKWBTYPT

Not worth the money IMO but I have read good things.

While you're waiting for insurance to get the sleep study, grab some devices to help reduce your snoring.

Anti snoring belt to help you sleep on your side, or make your own by sewing pockets for tennis balls onto the back of a shirt.

Nasal Dilators. Breathe Right nasal strips are available locally and help a little bit, but nasal dilators tend to help more.
