Hey Grey,

German here. German's have a weird obsession with sparkling water. (Not even kidding.) I had favorite tastes of bottled water and would take a special brand to get electrolytes after working out. That particularly salty water is Gerolsteiner. They do market that specifically (2.5g salt/litre, 120mg of Sodium, less than a tenth of the recommended daily dose. Don't drink 20 litres.). They even have a mineral water comparison app. Just know Natrium is Sodium and Kalium is Potassium, rest should be fine.

You'll see that there's a wide range of salt content in the brands of water. And I'd say the salt myth is pretty directly related to the Daily Mail.

There are several studies showing that water retention in fizzy water is the same as tap water^1, or possibly slightly lower. Can't find the study, but the idea was that because of the bubbles you take in less volume of water.

The LD50 for water in rats is 90g/kg. So maybe just don't drink over 6 litres at once.

Apart from that, if you don't want to rig up your entire water supply, maybe start with a Soda Stream, but buy it on sale.

u/cmfg · 43 pointsr/germany

Germans drink mostly carbonated water. If you order water at a German restaurant, you will get carbonated water, unless you specified otherwise ("stilles Wasser"/"silent water").

At home, too, most Germans drink carbonated water, but by no means everybody. The German tap water is excellent, so there are plenty of people just drinking that. Although some of them miss the sparkling so much they use something like this to carbonate it before drinking.

u/State_Sen_Clay_Davis · 25 pointsr/todayilearned

What kind of moron purchases the $130 version of this? It's just a CO2 injection system. I got my "starter kit" for $69 that came with everything you need. Proof

Clearly the reason they bought the unnecessarily expensive version was to inflate the costs so their "experiment" would be more surprising and generate more clicks and shares.

u/Throwaway1991uk · 22 pointsr/CowChop

But WHY don’t they sell you a CO2 tank along with the Aarke‽ It’s genuinely baffling. I’ve even been on the Amazon page, and it’s way down there that you actually need to buy it separately. I think this has caught a lot of people out, as it’s not even a “frequently bought together” item. Not that I’m giving Aleks a total pass, as it’s logical that you’d need something to aid the carbonation process, but still.

Hopefully we’ll see it used in a future Food Lab episode...?

u/ewewmjuilyh · 6 pointsr/xxfitness
u/iownakeytar · 6 pointsr/budgetfood

You could also invest in a SodaStream. It's under $100 for the starter kit, and the refill carbonators are around $30 (less if you can find a place that exchanges them.) The one pictured is just a sample size, the real ones can carbonate 60 liters of water. Then you can add a squeeze of citrus or really any fruit with a little juice to it, or if you really want to up your soda game...

  • Ginger Syrup makes a great ginger ale

  • Vinegar Shrubs - if you've never had craft cocktails with vinegar shrubs, this might sound a little weird, but they are so versatile, refreshing, and they'll keep in your fridge for months. The combinations are literally endless. The best part: you can use overripe or frozen fruit! Those berries that are losing their firmness, or those squishy peaches are perfect for making shrubs!

My SO and I have never been big on drinking brand name soda, but having soda water encourages us to drink more water. Add in a little all natural, homemade flavor and it's all I want to drink.
u/MILK_DUD_NIPPLES · 4 pointsr/CA_Kitchen

Had to Google how much it costs because I got it for free, ~$50. It's an old model, don't think they make it anymore. The cartridge refills are $15 if you trade in your spent one at Target. $30 new. They last a while, though.

Honestly, not really worth it unless you're really into carbonated water. I've never tried any of the Sodastream brand flavorings (cola, root beer, etc.). I just get the off brand MiO "water enhancers."

u/tellMyBossHesWrong · 4 pointsr/gadgets

This may not seem like what you are looking for at first, but get him a Soda Stream http://www.amazon.com/SodaStream-Fountain-Maker-Starter-Silver/dp/B00EPEALEM

I got my nerd boyfriend one, and he loves it. The connection to nerd-dom, is that he's more likely to stay hydrated during 24 hour long gaming sessions. Mine loves his.

u/Zelcron · 3 pointsr/cripplingalcoholism

CA Protip: Get yourself one of these, and you'll always be able to make more mixer. They're super easy to use, even when hammered, and it's cheaper than buying soda anyway.

u/cmaxim · 3 pointsr/nutrition

Have you tried Soda Stream? I found it very helpful..

http://www.amazon.com/SodaStream-Fountain-Maker-Starter-Silver/dp/B00EPEALEM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421088664&sr=8-1&keywords=soda+stream

I just carbonate a bottle of tap water and leave it in my fridge so whenever I feel like a soda, I drink the water instead.

It's not exactly the same because there's no sugar content, but I find it's fizzy enough that it reminds me enough of soda that it tricks my brain and satisfies my craving. I also find it more refreshing, less guilt involved (since it's basically just water). I usually add slices of lime for some extra flavour kick.

Try it! To me it's like the soda equivalent of nicotine patches!

u/t1mes7ruck · 3 pointsr/Kuwait

If you're willing to buy off amazon, I don't think customs will interrogate you for getting SodaStream. The downside is you've gotta buy the CO2 cylinder every now and then, but they do come in 60L cartridges so they will last a while.

u/freedom135 · 3 pointsr/gadgets

The top post. You need the tube adapter and a regulator.

Then there is this one which appears to be its own regulator, just get the right model for your tank. http://www.amazon.com/FiZZ-GiZ-II-Soda-Rope-Carbonation/dp/B00KAJA29K

u/Thomsenite · 3 pointsr/loseit

I'd chip in for something like this.

u/SarcasticOptimist · 3 pointsr/wine

Costco sells Pellegrino bottles. Alternatively, if you want to save money, get a carbonater and use filtered water or good tap water.

As for OP, it took a while to get into reds and Cabs...I first was a Riesling guy for a long time. Don't go full Muscato, but you can ease yourself into earthier wines over time by starting sweeter wines and getting to the earthier stuff gradually.

u/Barimen · 3 pointsr/PornhubComments

I was tried freshly carbonated tap water while a guest at someone's. I asked if they had sparkling water or tonic and the guy used a machine like this one to make sparkling water. It was okay. Definitely cheaper than buying sparkling water or soda (which I don't like).

You could always flavor it yourself with juices before carbonation. I sometimes treat myself with elderflower juice in unflavored sparkling water. Shit's tasty.

u/vapeducator · 3 pointsr/AskCulinary

Most people don't realize that soda fountains have refrigerators hidden somewhere to cool down the filtered water before it mixes the syrup and carbonation with it. Adding the soda to a cup full of ice will reduce the carbonation and dilute the flavor.

That's why many people ask for no-ice or little-ice. They know that the soda is already cold, fizzy, and strong, while adding it to ice only reduces that quality if you're going to drink it right away and don't need the ice to keep it cold for longer.

By the way, SodaStream is an overpriced ripoff for the CO2 and syrups. That's why they use proprietary fittings for the CO2 tanks. There have been other soda makers that use standard paint-ball compatible fittings and tanks, greatly reducing the cost of refills and making refilling as easy as going to any store that does CO2 refills.

One example is the FlavorStation. It uses CO2 tanks that have paint-ball fittings.

I have the Pampered Chef version of these measuring cups I love using these since I can see what I am measuring much better.

My mama got us a Soda Stream and it has saved gobs of money on energy drinks and pop. I think that the majority of the sodas taste better than their more expensive counterparts and they contain way less sugar!

While I do not have one of these; I am thoroughly convinced that I NEED one. =)

Edit: Let's do it in the kitchen.

I got so excited I forgot the raffle phrase :p

u/oh_elyse · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

We love the Sodastream Crystal we've had for just over two years. The glass bottles are great & dishwasher safe, my only complaint is the caps hurt my hand when they're put on too tightly. Don't worry about all the comments about diabetes & telling you to drink tap water — we use it almost exclusively to carbonate tap water and drink it sparkling, with a splash of fruit juice. Here in Germany the norm is for people to constantly buy cases and cases of sparkling water, this is a much cheaper (and more environmentally-friendly!) alternative.

Edited to add: look for a set/deal that includes multiple bottles — we use 3 in constant rotation.

u/PantyPixie · 2 pointsr/progresspics

$68 down from $100!

And I would recommend not using their dinky little CO2 cans but instead look into what my friend did which was modify his sodastream with a large commercial CO2 tank. (which you can get refilled at selected hardware stores)

2. Thunderstorm MP3

3. Take your pick just scroll down

4. For my baby because I want a cool ass baby haha! Also, daddy will like it!

5. The Hater trilogy, linked is the first of the 3. This book keeps you on your toes. It's an amazing apocalyptic book that has immense imagery. All I can say is read it.

6. Nail tape, it's not nail polish, just decoration.

7. Cats! There is a cat in the design.

8. So pretty!!

9. Because it'll always put a smile on your face!

10. Survival Backpack Has enough items to help a group of 4 survive for 72 hours. This will give the people with the pack a 72 hour head start from everyone else to establish a safe spot. Everyone else is trying to find essentials now getting stuck and eventually taken over by a hoard, whereas the person with the pack doesn't need to waste time getting food, water, and some medical kit.

11. Cookware My boyfriend and I have been living with his parents for a while now and we are getting our own apartment soon (all utilities included, yay!!). His parents decided not to pay the gas company the $500 deposit to have it turned on because we live in the south and don't need to heat our apartment, we would only use gas for cooking. Because of that I haven't had a meal cooked on/in a stove in about a year. We either eat things fresh, microwaved, in a crock pot, or fried. I am sick and fucking tired of it. With the cookware I'll be able to change my eating habits because I won't be limited to what things I can cook with. Also, when I was a little girl, I never ate at a kitchen table because we didn't have one. We would eat meals separately, and I always longed for the family dinner atmosphere. My goal is to have a family dinner at least 3 times a week. I know the cookware won't help me achieve that goal, but it puts me one step closer.

12. Baby mittens

13. Soda Stream It's the 2nd most expensive item, the survival pack above is, but the Soda Stream is my dream item. My ex roommate had one and it's amazing! Also, I'm pregnant and can't have caffeine, but I love the bubbles so much!!! With the Soda Stream, I'll be able to make anything carbonated!!! I LOVE mixing in the Crystal Light powered packets, yummy!!

14. Cute storage cube

16. Chocolate

17. Beautiful Katmari

19. I'm obsessed with my unborn baby. But then again, aren't most expecting mothers??

20. Instant smoke ring machine! Does the awesomeness of instant smoke rings need to be described!?!

u/brijito · 2 pointsr/sustainability

look into getting a soda stream machine. it makes carbonated water that you then flavor yourself with syrups, juice, fruit pieces, etc. The CO2 canisters can be recycled and refilled (each one lasts about 2 months with twice daily use) and one bottle can last you a few years as long as it doesn't go through the dishwasher!

From the looks of it (without seeing it in person) the Fizzi and Jet might be ok, just not the Fizzi One Touch maybe?

I like that burn too. I bought a DrinkMate carbonizer from Amazon and I carbonate the snots out of my water, and even my Ketoade.

u/theganglyone · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

If you don't like La Croix or Perrier, you can get your own sparkling water maker and put natural stuff in it, like lemon juice, etc.

I completely weaned myself off soda with La Croix and their multitude of flavors. To me soda is completely disgustingly sweet now. It makes my skin crawl.

You will fee soooo much better if you make the switch to unsweetened water!

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

If you're just interested in carbonated water (or "making" your own soda via syrup) you can get one of these. They sit on your kitchen counter, you screw the water jug into it, pump it a few times and it carbonates whatever's in the jug. Friend has one and it works quite well (not the same model linked on amazon above).

u/tiggrr2001 · 2 pointsr/loseit

Perrier can get expensive rather quickly. My husband and I invested in a SodaStream and I use the MyFlavor to make lemon flavored soda water. It's been a nice alternative to regular water and quenches the craving for soda.

u/bookishgeek · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

A SodaStream. I was mostly saved up for it, was down to just a bit, but then my cat got a bad case of fleas, and all my money has gone to caring for him and flea-bombing my apartment. I haven't slept in a couple of nights - been up all night shampooing/cuddling my flea-ridden cat, except last night when I boarded him to save my sanity/keep the fleas off - so the SodaStream pot is down to zero now.

I actually had a dream last night that I had a SodaStream. I got a little teary-eyed this morning upon waking. :| Thanks for the contest, I always enjoy seeing your posts :)

u/EastBeckleyBoy · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

I found the reviews at Amazon helpful. Most complaints were the refill costs.

u/garage_cleaner · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon
  1. this soda stream rises and falls in price, but i think it's the most expensive at the moment.

  2. I used be a soda junkie, but then went to carbonated water to kick the habit. Then I moved in with my hubby, and we just buy no soda and I rarely buy sparkling water. I

  3. It be really nice to have, especially when I'm tired and need something with caffeine, as I'm a non-coffee drinker, but I wouldn't die!

Dude, just get yourself one of those 'sodastream' things. Carb up your own water. You could add premade flavor or make your own. I boil down ginger root with stevia into a syrup and add that to carbed water.

u/daggoo · 1 pointr/Fitness

Get a SodaStream (http://www.amazon.com/Sodastream-Fountain-Soda-Maker-Starter/dp/B001KYT6CS). Throw away the syrups that come with it.

Get a variety of bitters - Fee Brothers makes some of my favorites (http://feebrothers.com/Product.asp?Category=5)

Make yourself some seltzer, then add a few drops of bitters for flavor. Drink all day! This has been tremendously helpful while I've been trying to cut down on soda.

The most untrue sentence in the internet is that Girlsplaywow is a jerk.

Seriously! I would love a gift card towards a Sodastream to help me get healthier if that is an option.

u/OhDeeOne · 1 pointr/SodaStream

I'm looking into this again too.

I first looked into doing this maybe about 6 years ago, and had somebody cut the Sodastream valve with a dremel tool so it could be refilled locally. Later I bought another tank and just started turning dry ice pellets into snow with a snow cone machine, filling the tanks, and screwing the valves back on.

At this point I'm probably going to buy the robust KitchenAid Sodastream machine: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PJ1E6ZK/ref=twister_B01CQDWW3G?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 and I'm thinking about hooking up a 5lb tank to it with this product from Trinity Paintball: http://www.trinitypaintball.com/SODA-STREAM-CO2-ADAPTER-p/tr1801.htm

Any thoughts on the quality of Trinity's device? In the video, their rep uses a washer on the tank valve to supposedly prevent leaks.

Here's a review on a different product that Trinity makes, where the reviewer claims it's much better than Co2 Doctor's product: https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/RXZU7BZDUYJ93/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00M37RMAY Of course that's not much to go on, and maybe should be taken with a grain of salt.

I agree that the Co2 Doctor site is offputting, so unless he really does have the best product, I don't feel inclined to give him my money.

Edit: I found some bad reviews on the Trinity product: https://www.amazon.com/Sodastream-Machine-Cga-320-Adapter-Tanks/dp/B00MAWRQ80/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8#Ask so at this point I'm thinking about going with the product from Palmers.

u/Take_A_Penguin_Break · 1 pointr/amazone

link. If you are in the US beware of the refill costs on the canisters because not a lot of supermarkets have the ability to refill these CO2 canisters. Shipping them to Soda Stream and back adds up quickly and a lot of people switch back to soda from the shelf at the store

u/ChubbyDane · 1 pointr/getdisciplined

In relation to this:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40227983/

Get three of these, fill them, store them in your fridge, and rotate them. You'll need to occasionally rinse them with soap, wash, and allow them to dry, but you now have delicious chilled water.

It does take a bit of fridge space, but it's worth it.

I like using mine with a sodastream:
http://www.amazon.com/SodaStream-Fountain-Maker-Starter-Silver/dp/B00EPEALEM

It carbonates the water nicely. Carbonated water has a distinct taste to it, but some lemon juice will give you a nice, skinny lemonade.

---

Occasionally, I'll even make myself some soda. Use a potato peeler or a grate to grate the grab the orange skin off of some oranges after rinsing them. I like 4. Squeeze 'em:
http://image.shutterstock.com/display_pic_with_logo/538906/538906,1265761420,1/stock-photo-orange-squeezed-with-an-orange-squeezer-mushroom-shape-46348465.jpg

Grab yourself a pot, pour the juice in, add 5-10 spoonfulls of sugar, add the peel in. Heat and stir with a (manual) whisker untill it's boiling heavily, remove from heat, and filter it the resulting orange essense. Chill till cold, and add to sodastreamed chilled water in whatever ratio you enjoy.

It's not exactly healthy, it's a sugary treat to be sure, but it's better than any store bought orange soda. Boiling the peel releases the aroma oil of the oranges into the juice, and it's the most important step. I'm not sure you can actually do it with less sugar than I use; I have a feeling the osmotic pressure is necessary to release the oil, but what do I know, I'm neither a biologist or a chemist.

What I do know is that the result is delicious, and it takes so much work to make the soda that my lazy ass will drink it less often than I'd drink store bought soda =P

Edit: Oh, and one last thing. I wish I had a vitamix blender. It's super freaking expensive, but it can wholesale blend oranges and it's self cleaning. If I could blend, boil and filter pure orange pulp with that, I would probably get fat off of my own soda.

u/GentleCanadianFury · 1 pointr/applehelp

New from Apple is $399, refurbished from Apple is $349.

Apple products tend to hold value well, and most people who own them and in turn resell them tend to know that. I'd say you can expect $300-$350 depending on condition. If you get really lucky and find someone who just wants to ditch the product ASAP you might see $250-ish, lowest. That's what I've seen on CL in my area.

And there's nothing to say that you can't try to barter with someone. I've never bought a product for the asking price on Craigslist. In fact, I'm picking up a SodaStream Fountain Jet for $50 on Monday.
