I would say if it's severe separation anxiety like Beric had, the treats aren't going to be enough. We give our other two dogs those treats before car rides and it seems to help them.

As for the other things we tried before the Fluoxetine: We tried music, we left the TV on, we gave him very long walks before we left (and still do), and we got him a Kong and filled it with peanut butter, froze it, and gave it to him before we left. We even tried one of those Thundershirts. Unfortunately, none of that seemed to be enough (he started to have really bad stomach problems from the anxiety) so our vet recommended Fluoxetine and that has seemed to have the greatest effect.

In a couple of months, we're planning on weening him off the Fluoxetine and finding some combination of the above to work.

as I understand it, Deep Note shows up in a 1983 demo CD released in called The Digital Domain.

It was generated by a C program written by Dr. James A. Moorer when he was working for Lucasfilm. Its first use was before "Return of the Jedi" as far as I know. IIRC, it was semi-random, and they recorded quite a few versions as it ran through the algorithm until they got one they liked.

I'll have to give it a shot, I usually don't like sorting by genre though. Also, quickly found this, which quickly lead to this. Go figure one is twice the price.

I have a Marpac Dohm white noise machine and use it in the highest setting. The most important thing is putting it between your dog and where they're hearing noises.

If you want soothing music in addition, it certainly wouldn't hurt to try. The Through A Dog's Ear collections (like this one) are supposed to have been clinically demonstrated to help reduce anxiety. :)

Ps. Don't be averse to medication. I have a dog with separation anxiety. We work with a veterinary behaviorist and medication had a huge role in improving his quality of life! I don't regret it for a second... it's really hard on a dog to be experiencing intense anxiety every moment they're alone.

Perhaps what would help most right now is a good night of sleep. 5mg of melatonin might do the trick. It can help you stay asleep. If you are willing to try relaxation music, I suggest playing this or this. I have used the music in the second link -- have the CD in my library. It's classical music with a subliminal track added. It's fucking peaceful man. It helped someone I know who had terrible sleep issues.

Lack of REM sleep can play all sorts of havoc on your mind and body. It creates huge mood swings, clouds your thinking, causes weird physical sensations. Light in the room where you sleep can mess with you big time, especially blue LED light. My modem and router both have bright blue LED lights, and both devices are in my bedroom, so I use an eye mask. I also have a loud fan to create white noise. Otherwise, I'm fucking worthless without enough good sleep.

I know some breathing techniques and can link you to some resources if you're willing to give them a try. You gotta want to help yourself though. The dream you had shows some serious inner conflict. The dream characters that shoot you and Josh are representations of parts of yourself. They are your anger, your pain, your defiance, your bitterness. Dying in a dream is a way of saying you are dying inside, or that something about yourself needs to recede so that you can mature. Or both. It starts with simply breathing deeply and slowly, using your diaphragm to fully open and close your lungs, then teaches some other breathing exercises. Now that I know the trick of breathing with my stomach and fully opening my lungs I do it all the time. But I used to be really tight in my chest and rarely breathed fully. Insufficient O2 creates a constant feeling of panic because your cells are screaming for what they need. It a huge relief when you breathe correctly. You can find Weil's techniques on Youtube.

We haven't tried a white noise machine, but Through A Dog's Ear has a marked affect on both of our dogs (one frenchie and one rescue mix of GSD/BC/Beagle/Etc.). Full disclosure: it makes humans sleepy too.

Food puzzles are great (snuffle mats, puzzles, Squirrel Dudes, Kongs, etc.). If your dog has absence anorexia, then do the puzzles before you go so at least his brain got some exercise. :)

If it is separation anxiety, you'll need to desensitize him since it is a panic disorder. Long road - best wishes!

Edit: yelling at someone in the middle of a panic attack is counter productive so I wouldn't recommend recording any 'angry' voice anything. Please don't punish the dog for something out of their control. :( And I wouldn't up the anty with adding food to your return = the good noms happen when mom/dad returns but not when they aren't there. Again, seems counter productive.

Well this sucks... I lost my hard drive a few months ago, and only had a back-up from a few years ago. I thought it would be on there but it looks like it wasn't. I'm super bummed. Sorry to over-sell! Although this is a great excuse to watch it all over again...
