Sure. :) I was trying not to hijack the thread, but I'll just put the list here and that way anyone can have it. Keep in mind, these aren't all collections of stories, some of them are research topics, but none of them that I've browsed through look like bad reads. The ones I have read I've tried to note.

Iroquois Supernatural: Talking Animals and Medicine People - Michael Bastine, Mason Winfield - most closely related to thread topic

Life After Life - Raymond Moody - Very good intro to Near Death Experience research

Reunions: Visionary Encounters with Departed Loved Ones - Raymond Moody

Journey of Souls - Michael Newton - Read this one, it was great, changed my views on reincarnation

The Day Satan Called - Bill Scott

Hunt for the Skinwalker - Colm Kelleher, George Knapp - read parts of, need to finish

The Vengeful Djinn - Rosemary Ellen Guiley - I've read this one, it's really good too, has a large "slow" section in the middle that quotes the Q'uran a lot, but some good creepy Djinn stories.

The Djinn Connection - Rosemary Ellen Guiley

Ghost Culture: Theories, Context, and Scientific Practice - John Sabol

Zones of Strangeness - Peter A. McCue

Lost Secrets of Maya Technology - James O'Kon

The Mythology of Supernatural - Nathan Robert Brown - this one might sound cheesy, but I've read a book on world mythology by the same author, and apparently the writers of the show did their research

Holy Ghosts: Or How a (Not-So) Good Catholic Boy Became a Believer in Things That Go Bump in the Night - Gary Jansen

u/SeaRegion · 9 pointsr/Reformed

M.F. Unger - What Demons can do to the Saints

Neil Anderson - The Bondage Breaker

Mark Bubeck - The Adversary: The Christian Versus Demon Activity

Storms has some good stuff. Demon "possession" isn't biblical - that's something that was put into the King James Version and we've been using it incorrectly ever since. The word is just "demonized" and carries a radically different meaning than the concept of "possession".

https://www.samstorms.com/enjoying-god-blog/post/can-a-christian-be-demonized-part-one

https://www.samstorms.com/enjoying-god-blog/post/can-a-christian-be-demonized-part-two

>Some of you are probably wondering why I have chosen the term “demonization” rather than the more popular “demon possession”. This may actually come as a surprise to you, but the Bible never once talks about demon possession. It was popularized by its appearance in the King James Version, although it had appeared in other English versions prior to the 1611 edition (Clinton E. Arnold, Three Crucial Questions about Spiritual Warfare [Grand Rapids: Baker Books, 1997], p. 205, n. 11). That should be reason enough to avoid using such language, but in addition we need to consider the emotional impact of the phrase which I believe detracts from an objective discussion of the subject. It is difficult for many to dissociate the concept of demon possession from scenes in the movie The Exorcist. I would also point out that the term "possession" implies ownership, and it is questionable to say that Satan or a demon own anything.

u/Jaegar · 7 pointsr/Thetruthishere

Absurd to state there is no single documented case, there is plenty of documentation which describe this phenomenon.

Supernatural entities? Psychosis?

As an atheist, supernatural doesn't fit my world view, however, make of this what you will, it shows there is plenty of similar documented "cases"

u/_Zagan_ · 6 pointsr/nottheonion

Not a catholic, but I got this one from He Came to Set the Captives Free. Something to do with yoga being about clearing your mind and demons sneaking in through the backdoor.

u/Winterssavant · 6 pointsr/nottheonion

The Catholic view of possession is very legal-y hilariously enough, but most T.V. writers don't look too far into it to explain deeper. If you like reading this stuff I can recommend a couple books.

The Demonologist- This is about Ed and Lorraine Warren from 1980 or so

The Dark Sacrament - Has two viewpoints, both Catholic and Protestant

An Exorcist explains the Demonic -Written by Father Gabriel Amorth , exorcist of Rome before he passed away. And where The Rite tried to draw inspiration (and failed) from.

u/US_Hiker · 6 pointsr/DebateReligion

>Really, how many religious conflicts are not, at their core, about politics, nationalism and ethnicity?

Some would say all

u/Captain_Midnight · 6 pointsr/Christianity

Well, An Exorcist Tells His Story, Hostage to the Devil, The Demonologist, parts of the Bible (KJV and NIV for comparison). It's difficult to find much good information on the Internet that isn't awash in silly spiritism or confrontational Christianity.

In the Catholic Church and most non-evangelical denominations, the person who is believed to be possessed is examined thoroughly by medical and psychiatric professionals. Sometimes these professionals are religious, sometimes they're not. When this person is cleared by the pros but the problems persist, the local bishop will authorize an exorcism.

People who are possessed (or oppressed or obsessed) range the full spectrum from complete atheism to devout faith. Their behavior can change violently if a holy item is brought near to them, even if they can't see it and have no reason to expect its presence.

The only way to explain all of this "rationally" is to decide that all of these books are complete fiction, that all the authors are liars, and that none of it ever happened, or didn't happen the way that they depicted it. You have to toss out everything.

In fact, you have to accept a conspiracy of lies, because these stories are everywhere and crop up constantly. You have to assume that all of the people who have come forward on these TV specials are crazy, horribly mistaken, or desperate for notoriety. All of them. That is not a statistically likely outcome at this point, given the sheer amount of data.

And neither is it an obscure process of nature which is just poorly misunderstood. Obscure processes of nature don't lift a 400 pound refrigerator and fling it across the kitchen.

I know I'm probably going to get counter-arguments on this. I really urge those people to read one of these books before they do so. Because what you understand of this phenomenon through popular culture is about 90% wrong.

> I am a writer who is doing lots of research on spiritual warfare.

If I could recommend a book for you, it would be the Handbook for Spiritual Warfare by Dr. Ed Murphy. The book is amazing. It's basically written like a college textbook, with exhaustive research and footnotes, but enough real life anecdotes to keep it interesting. Dr. Murphy goes through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation examine every instance of spiritual warfare.

Neil Anderson has a bunch of great books too.

u/SnakeGandhi · 3 pointsr/Christianity

You are correct that many Christians take offense, and of course they do. Their fundamental sense of self is rooted in belief. However, the atheist is no different. You yourself indicated this with the last line of your post. When one's paradigm is challenged, it is normal for those who are not used to dialogue with other paradigms to lash out like white blood cells attacking a foreign body in the bloodstream. At the very least, if you're looking for academic dialogue about Christianity, you'll need to stop going to non-academic Christians. The examples of Trump representing (and in my opinion, "Christian" Trump supporters) true orthodox (correct) theology is simply false, along with any Christian institution that "bears fruit" of violence, etc.

As an aside, I also picked up a small but strong presupposition common among many atheists/agnostics (assuming atheism/ag from your post, correct if wrong) that the book is closed academically on the existence of God. I would assume that you're aware that at the most basic level, the belief in or not in God is indeed still a belief and can never be proven; this is much more problematic for the positivist than the believer. Fortunately for us all, the metamodern landscape has resulted in the contesting of all things secular and religious. There is no longer (nor ever was) a separation.

I would recommend these books to you for some further reading on the point: #1 and #2. Here are to qualifying reviews on the first text. 1 and 2.

Hope it helps.

u/VRGIMP27 · 3 pointsr/exjew

It is silly, but I don't see it as sillier per se.

Christian theology doesn't see any of it as God's mistake, but as man's mistake that man made of his own volition. You see, Unlike in Judaism, God is believed to have created both the humans and the angels with free will.

So, Christians believe that Satan, and 1/3 of the angelic host (who were initially holy) rebelled against god, and God "justly" exiles them from heaven, and then Satan entices Eve to sin.

All of the Christian view of Sin can be traced to developments of the concepts like Nephilim as the offspring of fallen angels (as found in 1 Enoch.)

https://www.amazon.com/Reversing-Hermon-Watchers-Forgotten-Mission/dp/0998142638

(this book, though written by a Christian fundie does a great Job of thoroughly seating their ideas in Near Eastern and Jewish Appocryphal literature.)

The sad thing I have realized is that Judaism in some form or other already had all the ingredients in it to create my former religion, despite Judaism hating its guts for seriously legit reasons.

The rabbis say its Avodah Zarah, but if it is, I have always said, I believe it was a home grown Jewish form of it.

Take the virgin birth. Why would anyone claim this is necessary from the Torah when the book clearly shows you the clear need of a continuous male line?

Because no claimed lines of descent to David today are traced father to Son. All the lines of descent we can examine are actually Matralineal if you look into it.

The Mystical BS reason is Because the Messiah is supposed to be like Adam Harishon, but done right without making his mistakes. Adam was made by God's own hands, so likewise the messiah must be made that way. Why born of a woman only?

From the source of the sin must come its rectification. Eve was Disobedient, and caused the fall, so a righteous woman must rectify that disobedience.

I saw a Shiur once where a rabbi said that in Olam Haba a woman would have children without the need of a man, based on Jeremiah 31:22. (COULDN'T BELIEVE A RABBI SAID THIS, EVEN ALLEGORICALLY.)

Mysticism is crazy man. I mean, the rabbis could have demolished Jesus overnight, just by saying "we agree with the Sadducees! Resurrection is not taught in the books of Moses. Because really, it is a doctrine thoroughly built on allegorical readings of like 5 different verses.

I've recommended this book before, and I'm going to again. I read it while I was still extremely new to the faith and it still helped me greatly. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1936488337/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473826280&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=spiritual+warfare&dpPl=1&dpID=51oQWuBZPcL&ref=plSrch

Demonic oppression is not necessarily head spinning, it can be extremely subtle. One of the most common is demonic accusation. Things like "You're not saved. God doesn't hear your prayers. You're too far gone. You're not a real Christian."

Some of the keys to victory are

  1. Understanding your delegated authority in Jesus Christ.

  2. Confess all sins, known and unknown, and let nothing stand between you and God.

  3. Don't believe or listen to lies/accusations. Ask for discernment between the Holy Spirit's conviction and demonic accusation, you can usually tell the difference. Stand on God's word. Accusation is often very vague, keeping the Christian worried about "sin", and it often beats us down. The Holy Spirit will convict us specifically, and it may hurt, but it will build us up.

“Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.”

Your premise is not true and leads to forming a faulty conclusion. This faulty conclusion results in relying on feelings and breeds the fear you are not really saved:

False Premise: God’s presence must be felt to be a Christian.

Faulty Conclusion: If you don’t feel God’s presence you’re doing it wrong and are condemned.

The Holy Spirit (a.k.a. the Comforter) works through the word. Here’s some comfort for your fears: For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. This is what the bible actually teaches:

1. Calling – effected by the Holy Spirit, through hearing or reading the Word, the unbeliever is convicted of their sin and “called” to repentance.

2. Grace – good will and favor shown to those who can plead no merit.

3. Repentance – an “about-face” or turning away from the self (trusting your own character and your own merits) and turning towards God (trusting His character and Christ’s merits.) Godly sorrow leads to repentance without regret and leads to salvation; the sorrow of the world produces death.

4. Redemption – the unbeliever, like a captive slave, is literally redeemed or “bought back” from death.

5. Justification – judged by God to be free from sin. By grace through faith – the righteousness of Jesus is accredited to the believer.

6. Sanctification – sanctification is the spiritual growth that follows justification.

7. Hope – in place of a hopeless end, a believer now has endless hope. Christian hope is a confident expectation to be resurrected to eternal life with God in Heaven.

8. Faith – faith springs from hope and is a confident expectation. Faith is a right relationship to God established through the all-atoning work of Christ

9. Love – Christian love is unconditionally treating others as you wish to be treated: respect, mercy and selfless charity.

10. Salvation – reality of the Christian hope.

Note in all of the above, God does the work and to Him goes the glory. Our duty is: submit to grace through faith. Period. Faith is not feelings – but ACTION!!! The bible teaches that faith without works is dead. The evidence of faith is not a feeling but action a.k.a. works. Actions can be observed. This is why Jesus can judge posers saying, “I never knew you.” Read the whole context of “faith in actions” in Matthew 7:15-27

Lutherans would say “His love; our response.”

So who can be saved? By their fruits you will know them who believe in the Lord Jesus and are saved. It is by grace man has been saved – through faith and this is not of themselves – but a man is judged righteous by the evidence of what they do and not by faith alone.

tl;dr: You are saved by grace through faith alone. Your faith is justified by deeds and not by faith alone.

> Spiritual advice

A. Right now: read C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters. It’s a short read and through satire Lewis shows how Satan sabotages our faith, tempts our confidence and breeds fear, to even make believers doubt our salvation.

B. Get into the Bible daily. Make it a priority to study and understand what it really teaches. Read the Gospels in context asking, “Who is the author? Who is the audience? What’s Jesus teaching here? What is Jesus saying to me today through this verse? Read the New Testament in light of the Old Testament. When you’ve done this for a time, even one single verse will open up so richly in context to the whole bible, it will amaze you.

As a believer of only four years, you are definitely in God’s family, but relatively immature (some say a “baby Christian”.) There’s absolutely no negative connotation to that, it simply means with guidance we need to grow in our relationship (see sanctification above) with God and Christ. Just like you would behave when forming relationships with your family and others Christians grow in our relationship with each other and God by: going to church (corporate worship), partake in the sacraments (Lord’s Supper), study God’s word and loving your neighbor. These are the attributes (works) of faith in action. You are not saved by what you do, Jesus has already taken care of that work, but the evidences of justifying faith (being grafted into the family) is your action.

Sorry for the length. I hope this helped in some way.

Cavanaugh's almost fanatically empirical in his approach, especially in his book, which I'm reading now; example after example after example.

Right now I'm knitting a scarf for my mother. I've been reading a series called Feyland (I've finished the main trilogy, now I need to read the prequel, a related short story, and the first book of the spinoff series - all of which I have - and the second book of the spinoff series - eventually once I get it). I read a lot. I was in elementary school in the 1970s and it was all the rage back then to train kids in gifted programs in speed-reading, which my school did. I was the fastest reader, in fact I got a talking-to for speeding up the machine because it was going too slowly for me. :| I still read very quickly.

Most of the books I read have to do with religion and spirituality, like The Weapon, Resistance, The Four Last Things. Right now I'm deep into St. Faustina's diary. It's extraordinary.

In fiction I love classic literature, novels and short stories. Jane Austen, J.D. Salinger, Nathaniel Hawthorne. I have a particular taste for 19th century French writers: Honoré de Balzac, Gustave Flaubert, Victor Hugo. They motivate me to improve my French.

In non-fiction, I read about dog training and health, business, human nutrition and health, history and politics. Anyone struggling with weight loss might want to check out Dr. Jason Fung's The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended - good info there.

I am praying for you and I believe your request. Jesus says demons are real so I dont know why any Christian on here would want to say otherwise, and there will always be trolls online who will want to mock your faith so just ignore them.

1 Corinthians 2:14 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
14 But [a]a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually [b]appraised.

Demons and spiritual warfare are real and they can cause you harm if you are passive to them or let them. You have authority over them but you must take it. Being a Christian you are spiritually saved but demons can still negatively effect you if you let them, and there has been many pastors who had the assumption that because they were saved they were impervious to any negative effects, and then shocked they were under spiritual attack and had to take authority to end it.

This is a great resource to dealing with spiritual warfare and taking authority, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004XVZ85Y/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

This is one of the most powerful sermons I have ever heard. Francis Chan, though I wouldn't die on his hill, really has a gift for stirring up God's people to love and good works. When I was a budding Christian, his sermons helped me pull my head out of my butt (spiritually speaking). I came straight out of agnosticism and basically despised the church. [Note] the actual sermon starts at 4:20ish. They both reference books in the sermon, in a joking way. The first guy wrote a book called Big God, and Francis wrote Crazy Love. The jokes might go right over your head without that context.

Also, Paul Washer is pretty awesome.

Dr. Michael S. Heiser is also on the top of my list. He's an old testament scholar who focusses on the supernatural aspect of scripture. He's got books: the Unseen Realm and Reversing Hermon are a couple of my favorites.

He also has a podcast called the Naked Bible. He tackles thorny subjects with thorough exegesis and goes through different books of the bible. It's called Naked Bible because he interprets scripture free of denominational traditions or creeds, he let's the texts speak for themselves.

His content isn't for everyone, as it's quite dense and somewhat controversial. But I'd recommend him none the less.

The American psychiatrist M. Scott Peck came to believe in the reality of spiritual evil based not on personal religious experience but rather on the anomalous clinical presentation of two patients. He subsequently participated in a couple of exorcisms in the capacity of a psychiatrist and observer and wrote this book detailing the experience. It's "the first complete account of exorcism and possession by a modern psychiatrist" and makes for very interesting reading if you have the nerve.

"Backmasking" was the craze around my family. We had a tape recorder that could play both forward and reverse, and my parents would randomly grab my music and play it backwards "to listen for subliminal messages the devil recorded on the tape".

I secretly listened to "The Simpsons" on a multiband shortwave radio that happened to tune broadcast TV frequencies.

This book was normal reading for me. Joke's on them, though.. the graphic depictions of demon sex made me 'Go Satanist' when I hit puberty. Oops.

Ironicly, during that time I actually picked up 'The Satanic Bible' from the library, and whole worlds of philosophy and theology opened up to me. That book pulled me right out of the religious/counter-religious path, and made me the rationalist agnostic I am today. I still consider myself very spiritual, but it's a personal path that I use to help me keep a sense of purpose and self-worth in my life; but I know the difference between spiritual wisdom and religious belief now,

Several of the best-known prayers from Valley of Vision are online here.

I agree with others who recommend the Book of Common Prayer as a resource; I have used the Daily Office morning and evening prayer often. You don't want the 1979 US Episcopal Book of Common Prayer, as it's basically got nothing in common with the historic text. You can find the 1928 US Episcopal book (with the thees and thous, if you're alright with it) here. Daily audio recordings (with a cantor) are available here. You can also get the proposed 2019 Anglican Church North America Book of Common Prayer here. The ACNA texts are updated language (no thees and thous) but are 99% true to the Reformation-era BCP. I found it useful for awhile to follow the suggested readings and such to get a feel for the liturgical calendar, but it can easily become far too rigid. I can't imagine praying the same words in the Daily Office twice a day for the next 50 years of my life.

I am also a big fan of Matthew Henry's A method for prayer pdf here. He has a ton of short prayers and pieces of prayers that are straight out of scripture, and at the end of the book a number of prepared prayers. I recite the morning and evening prepared prayers here often.

As a wildcard, I'll recommend Prayers that rout demons on kindle here. I don't know anything about the guy who wrote it, and I don't remember now why I decided to download it, but this reminds me most of how Pentecostals pray at a big revival meeting. Just short pieces of scripture, 1-2 sentences statements of praise, blessing, or supplication. I get the most emotionally charged up and built up in my faith when I pray in this way.

With all of the resources I listed above, you'll find yourself just remembering words and phrases that fit into your own prayer life, and most of them are straight out of scripture.

God bless.

M Scott Peck was a psychiatrist who wrote about his experiences with the devil. He first mentions it in his book People of the Lie, but then goes into much more detail in the book Glimpses of the Devil. Both books are disturbing reads. I don't know whether or not I believe in possession by a third party. But I walked away from his books with a newfound fear and respect of the human mind, and what it is capable of unleashing on itself.

I'm playing a Life Cleric and I love RP'ing epic incantations in the name of my god. While randomly perusing the books at Wal-Mart, I stumbled across a Christian prayer book entitled Prayers that Rout Demons. According to Amazon, "This book contains powerful warfare prayers and decrees taken from Scripture that will break the powers of darkness and release the blessings and favor of God. This prayer tool includes an introduction to spiritual warfare and biblical principles for praying to overcome demonic influence and oppression."

I'm a Bible believing Christian myself (LDS to be precise), and although that book doesn't mesh theologically with my own preferred flavor of Christianity, I found that the biblical references it cites make a great foundation for epic Cleric invocations. I changed a few names and had a great time.

TL;DR: This book cites epic Bible verses you can use for inspiration.

Dinusaurusi?Evolucija?Yay or nay?

Nikad to nece uspeti. Kompletna familija mu je "prosvetljena" u masoneriji. Zlotvori najvecih razmera.

Izvoli. Cisto me interesuje.

https://www.amazon.com/Reversing-Hermon-Watchers-Forgotten-Mission/dp/0998142638

Zato i postoji mnozina bogova u stvaranju coveka (Bozji Sabor opet). Sa razlogom. Nikakvo trojstvo i ostale gluposti nase a i ostalih ckrvi.

I recently read the book The Bondage Breaker by Neil T Anderson. In it, the author makes the point that we ought to get rid of anything that resembles demonic power, because if we allow even the slightest foothold, Satan will take that foothold and try to increase his power over our lives.

Here's the thing. Some people are very spiritually weak. For these weak, I would not recommend things like yoga or any other activity that has it's roots in mysticism. For the strong, they realize that there is nothing inherently wrong about yoga, acupuncture, or any of the things you mentioned. We are strong enough to base on faith on the true healing power of Jesus Christ.

But again, there are many who might get into these things and delve ever more into mysticism or satanism. It's all how we look at things. The Bible makes it clear that we shouldn't just make rules for the sake of making rules, and especially not to prevent others from exercising their freedoms they have in Christ. But we also shouldn't put a stumbling block in anyone's way, especially not in our own way.

>I am offended that word "god" is in the motto

>I would argue that the motto is an imposition, albeit a minor one.

And I am offended of the name "Jupiter" for a planet. That's an imposition because we cannot change it and I don't believe in those gods.

>when the actual debate is about the spirit of separation of church and state and a desire to not be misrepresented.

If you are interested on the difference between state and church, must read this.

The fact is that the idea of God has never been restricted to religion. In the same way, communities are not restricted to churches.
