Denim jackets are the best for travel! They're breathable and comfy and mine has an inside pocket that fits my passport perfectly. I'm with you on the weird smell thing and burrowing into a scarf is the best (especially when someone nearby has taken a perfume bath). My feet always get cold too - but then I discovered alpaca wool compression socks. Now my feet stay toasty and my calves don't get as stiff!

The reviews on this amazon listing for toe socks seem to indicate that the main goal of toe socks is to prevent blistering from walking a lot among people who find their toes rubbing against each other to be a serious problem.

Probably you don't have this problem, and so they seem silly to you, but can you understand why these people rate them highly? It seems to have nothing to do with fashion or anything silly, but a purely pragmatic problem.

Darn Tough's are the only socks I wear.

Summer is Darn Tough Men's No Show Ultralight (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DWVS1S)

Winter is Darn Tough Vermont Men's Merino Wool Micro Crew Cushion Hiking Socks (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010Y26NY)

I know a lot of people like Smart Wool but I've personally found them to wear out fairly quickly. Also you just can't beat the Darn Tough life time warranty.

I own three pairs of each. When traveling / one bagging I just bring two pairs and it works out perfect. I wouldn't hesitate in the slightest to give them a go.

Good luck!

I am looking to buy these Darn Tough No Show socks to run in and general wear. I am not training for any events just trying to get back into running. Should I buy them?

Edit: Thanks everyone. I wear Darn Tough socks everyday but the socks I have are normal length socks, crew length? And I wanted to see your opinions. It is getting hotter now and I need some shorter length socks.

I agree with most of this information, but for all of the people from warm climates that will see this, the winters are absolutely manageable, and the way this person wrote the winter segment almost seems like a joke. Suggesting a windbreaker over a thick winter jacket? Perhaps just bad wording, but bad advice. Over-the-ear headphones as protective winter gear? You've got to be kidding.

But yes, if you don't dress for the weather, it's gonna suck. Coming from someone who grew up in upper midwest winters and comfortably biked through the winter for all four years at the U, here's what I think you should get to be comfortable:

  • A solid over-ear winter hat
  • 1-2 beanie winter hats (should cover your ears, good for layering, and you'll lose one)
  • An absolutely reliable, wind-blocking scarf, cold weather mask, or other face covering
  • Waterproof/windproof winter jacket (hood recommended)
  • A nice mid-layer (like a sweatshirt or fleece)
  • Long underwear/base layers (under armour, thermal leggings, etc)
  • Skiing gloves (waterproof/windproof-- get two pairs because you'll lose one)
  • Liner gloves (could be the crappy $2 ones from Target, but it doesn't hurt to spend a bit more)
  • Wool socks (multiple pairs-- they're comfy and functional)
  • Waterproof snowboots

It's not hard to thrift for many of these items to get them cheap. Hit the thrift store before October to get your best selection-- heck, go this weekend!

Also, after being directly connected with more students than I can count from classes and extracurriculars, I didn't know anyone who preferred using the Gopher Way. I wouldn't count on using it unless you want to add 10-30 minutes through isolated tunnels to your commute. It's far easier to reliably bundle up and walk straight to wherever you're going, as long as you can navigate the often-plowed snow (wheelchairs, crutches, and other mobility obstacles might be an exception).

It's not what you asked for but I went through the waterproof boot phase. Did not work. Water is often higher than the boots and then the boots never dry. So I bought waterproof socks that come to mid-calf. Use them with trail runners. Weight 122 gms for 2. I love them. They work. Got 100's of miles on them and still work. Got them on Amazon: waterproof socks

Cool

Warm

Goddamn Cozy

Also, yes I do expect them to last a long long time, and if they do wear out, I'll have them replaced.

u/DontRemindBot · 2 pointsr/onebagging

I use this. If you are looking for more options then read more here

u/CptUSA201 · 1 pointr/BarefootRunning

Check out water proof socks. I have a pair of these and they work quite well. Keep my feet dry and I can wear another layer inside the socks if need be.

I've enjoyed these: YingDi Mens Winter Australian Merino Wool Cushion Hiking Crew Socks - Pack of 3 pairs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0771NGR71/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_O8yIDbN5N2CBV

u/addtokart · 1 pointr/fitness30plus

I had similar issues. I switched to wool socks and the problem went away.

I got these
DANISH ENDURANCE Merino Wool Light Socks (Black 3 Pairs, US Women 11-13 // US Men 9.5-12.5) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D8WKYRG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_.UhHDbPPNYA06

This Icebreaker wool buff is warm, soft, durable, and is probably one of the best single pieces of winter gear I have ever owned. It really does a lot to keep you warm and prevents the wind from running down your neck and into your coat. You'll eventually feel naked without it.

u/GhostBond · 1 pointr/bicycling

Ha, holy crap you're right, I didn't notice when I posted it.

I bought mine over a year ago. I think these are the latest model of the same sock, which are far more reasonably priced at $21.95 for an XL:
https://www.amazon.com/Fits-Sock-Co-F1001-Crew-Navy-XL/dp/B015Z1W8XA/ref=sr_1_1?th=1&psc=1

I just searched for the same title from the same company.

u/josandal · 1 pointr/running

Ahh, the area where you need a sled dog team to escape, gotcha.

Here's one. (Warning: toe socks are best socks)

Here's another.

And here's the one I'd referenced re: cycling socks that I run in sometimes when not biking in them (the Areator line is pretty solid, though generally I like pirate motifs for my cycling socks)

u/Pattycaaakes · 1 pointr/airsoft

Regarding socks: I just got some Fox river and they're amazing. I got some warmer ones than the ones I linked, because I live in the northeast US, but they're comfortable, moisture-wicking, and have extra padding where your boot laces press on your feet. They're a good time. Check them out.

u/NachoGarden · 1 pointr/Survival

This is what you are looking for.

Also look into a good pair of waterproof boots.

u/FlashAndPoof · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

High school budget... invest in nice boots/outerwear. Everything else can be found from Target or similar.

For example... if you really want a nice shawl cardigan, go ahead and get one with a 25% off coupon from J.Crew. Want some really nice boots? Don't be afraid to have them be your most expensive purchase in your wardrobe.

But for basics like tees and shirts, Target is just fine. Hell... I still rock a $5 "premium" Hanes tee when I know I'll be sweating outdoors. My most frequently worn socks are these Darn Tough Merino wool socks They may be $14 a pair, but I believe they carry a lifetime warranty. Extremely comfortable and I haven't even had one wear out on me yet! I recommend everyone try at least one pair to check them out and see if merino wool socks are for them.

OCBDs and most shirts... to be honest, I think name brands are a bit overrated for simple OCBDs and similar shirts. Sure they can be made of different material and vary in comfort... but they're all very similar and 99.9% of the people around you will never be able to tell the difference. I've never had a single person tell apart one of my $500 Ralph Lauren Purple Label shirt from my J.Crew ones. It's not like they're going to reach out and feel your shirt every time to check lol. The MAIN thing is fit!!! Fit is king! Try a bunch on and find one that fits you decently. I won't recommend tailoring all your OCBDs and shirts immediately as I find high schoolers can have huge variation in their bodies as they continue growing.

Putting together outfits... woah. Honestly... I'd just look up a bunch of popular instagrammers and the WAYWT threads on here and just keep on clicking. Maybe take some notes on what really really pulls you and draws in your imagination/taste.

I bought these a few weeks ago and really like them. They are a little pricey but have a lifetime no hassle warranty.

This and this.

u/havespacesuit · 1 pointr/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

At any brick and mortar store that sells five toed shoes, but only one company really makes them. The cheapest (and best IMO) sock costs 10 bucks a pair, but it's totally worth it to be able to wear socks in your vibrams.

And since I'm such a nice fellow, I'll link you to them: http://www.amazon.com/injinji-Performance-Mini-Crew-Toesocks/dp/B002WN2L6Y

Injinji is the brand name. :p

u/ttubravesrock · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

camera - $200

tablet - $180

shirt - $20

heart thing for wife - $70

loppers - $30

bt headphones - $50

foodsaver - $100

jeggings (wife) - $20

bra (wife) - $30

plan weights - $10

I'm going to delete the wife stuff and the socks...
