I bought a steam mop this one in fact, when it was on sale. So this is $45-60 up front. But I still think it's worth it.
The mop pockets are washable microfiber. I can spray vinegar on the floor to "presoak" any spots that might need extra attention, but other than that, no additional costs (inb4 electricity - but I don't mind the couple cents 10 minutes uses).
If you're coming from a mop+bucket system where you are adding sanitizing cleaner, you're eventually going to make up cost on new mopheads and lysol. Also, way cleaner than a sponge mop.
And time is money as well. My floors are sanitized and DRY in a fraction of the time, so I'm happy. Also, because it's faster and easier, I mop more often.
I mean you could but I would caution against a power washer INSIDE a house. Water control could get out of hand. One of these thou:

2 important things to consider with tile that will make your life quite a bit easier:
>clean beer off of hardwood floors?
Step 1: Towel up liquid.
Step 2: Steam mop. I've got that exact one (two toddlers, a dog, and a cat in a house with all hardwood floors, so I don't like to use chemicals on my floor if I can help it), and it does a great job of breaking up sticky stuff that would normally require you to get out the scrub brush.
Nah mate, the 1040 bag catering pack
Bona's great. I've also like Weiman Floor Cleaner. I'd say even more important is a good
pro grade dry mop for regular dust/grit cleanup (not any of that Swiffer BS). You should be able to find it cheaper at your local hardware store.
Story time: We custom built our house and at the end of the build the GC brought in one hardcore middle aged lady that spent 2-3 days cleaning the ENTIRE damn house from construction zone to spotless. She was superhuman. I was doing touchup painting and made sure to be very respectful of not dirtying up rooms that she had already cleaned and apparently she really appreciated it, as she left one of her dry mops with a nice note wishing us luck in our new house and saying this dry mop was the most important thing we'd need. She was right, you can dry mop an entire floor of the house in just a few minutes and it takes it from "this floor is covered in grit and cat hair" to "nice and clean". Then just proper mop occasionally. If you go too long between proper mops, it can be nice to steam mop to get the tough dirt that won't easily mop out.
I gotta tell you my super-effective tile and tub-cleaning technique. This is from trial and error, cleaning an apartment complex that is owned by a family member.
The magic eraser cleans the tile faces immediately. After steam-scrubbing the grout and a few applications of bleach, the grout is good as new. And remember to not mix cleaning agents, especially those with bleach or ammonia.
This one looks pretty good:

I bought a new house in March and it has hardwood throughout other than the (tile) bathrooms.
I’ve been mopping with a sponge mop and floor cleaner and it’s been less than ideal. The floor was too wet and it didn’t smell great afterwards.
Last night I broke down and bought this fella and I’m embarrassingly excited for it to arrive tomorrow!
I have to second this right here. /u/stromydayandnight, /u/EllieSauce is correct. I use this steamer, and have for 4 years now. It's small enough to take anywhere and I work in a very professional atmosphere where dress code is tight and I have never had any negative comments, only positive. So long as I take my dress shirts (or any garment) out of the dryer fairly quickly the steamer straightens everything out within 3 minutes. If the garment has creases, even heavy, I can usually get them out within 10 minutes with a few passes but you'd only be doing that in an emergency situation.
I just dealt with fleas and it sucks. I got rid of them by being pretty aggressive. I bathed my dog with flea shampoo the Tropiclean one like suggested, used a flea comb after. I then got him a Serestro collar, and used K9 Advantax II again. He had it before the fleas actually showed up but i re-applied sooner than one month with Vet permission. Also used Capster for a week. Finally, I washed bedding, curtains, clothes, threw out some toys that were cloth he played with during the time and some couch cushions. Wiped down every surface with Vets best flea and tick home spray, spread out Diatomaceous Earth. Vaccumed every day for a week and a half and steam cleaned the floor, the couch, the bed with one of these. Aggressive and pricey yes but home and puppy are completely flea free. I still spot check with the flea comb just in case though.
Well, it's great on anything you need heat to melt grime away with, like grout or tile. It's also great at lower temps and pressures for de-wrinkling clothes, especially dry-clean only stuff so long as you don't get it too hot. The first steam cleaner I tried on bed bugs was actually for steaming wrinkles out of clothes. It doesn't have to be and particular brand or for any particular purpose so long as it hits the right temperatures.
Honestly, I bought this one several years ago, although then it ran me about $30. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T56FK96/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
If you're using it for bed bugs just remember to use low pressure. High pressure is great for cleaning but you don't want to blow the bed bugs or eggs around, you want long concentrations of heat, so low pressure is best.
I have one similar to this Steamfast SF-370WH Multi-Purpose Steam Cleaner https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0051T8XMW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Lc8uzbD1GFHJN
There are some better ones that will run you like $200 but they provide a lot more than just cleaning your mats!
Edit: also thank you for this reminder I haven't cleaned mine in a while...I should probably do that this weekend! :/
Several years ago I had a bed bug problem. Not nearly as bad as some others I've seen, but a regular problem. I got rid of it myself with about six months of work.
Because bed bugs are attracted to your breath while you sleep, most of your work will be in and around your bed.
First you have to wash your sheets every week. Strip the bed and put the sheets in a plastic garbage bag to prevent spreading the bugs or eggs around your house or apartment, then throw the bags away once you get the sheets in the wash.
While the bed is stripped, inspect the box spring and bed frame for bugs and eggs. I used strips of scotch tape to gently lift any bugs I found without crushing them and spilling their blood all over my walls.
Twice a week, move the bed out from wherever it sits and clean the area under it. If it's carpeted, use a handheld steam cleaner to slowly blast steam all over the carpet to kill any eggs that may be buried there, then vacuum the entire area. Then spray the carpet with a bed bug spray.
Examine the ceiling, walls, and baseboards around the bed. Bed bugs love to hide in any little crack in your paint, or dent in your wall, or crevice between your baseboard and the dry wall. Again, use the scotch tape to lift any visible bugs off and throw them away. Run a vacuum cleaner hose attachment over the baseboards and the point at which two walls meet, or the wall and ceiling meet. Spray the bed bug spray on these areas.
Carefully examine any electrical outlets near your bed. This is where I found quite a few bugs hiding. Unscrew the outlet cover and look on the back side of it for any bugs there, and look in the outlet wall cavity for bugs. Don't stick metal back there or try to spray liquid. Instead, I used a powder twice a week.
Buy a bed bug mattress cover and one for your box spring if you have one.
While you're doing all this it's important to not change where you sleep, even though you may be getting devoured at night by bed bugs. They're attracted to your breath so if you try sleeping in another area of your home they may just follow you there and infest other furniture.
These are the steps that worked for me. Again, I did them once or twice a week for a solid six months. I never called an exterminator. My landlord tried to use some "bug bombs" from Home Depot but I found they did not work.
Rookie numbers, that
Get some Clorox Foaming Bleach (you can get it at Walmart or similar) and some magic erasers.
The floor looks lightly textured so you would need to be careful but you can also try some of these.
This looks like serratia_marcescens which is common bathrooms and other wet environments. It is pretty resilient and you will need to keep cleaning the area pretty regularly to kill it off. The best think would probably be to get a steam cleaner if you really need to get this off. This unit is really good.
Mine isn't small, but I really love my Rowenta Compact Valet steamer. Rowenta also makes a hand-held travel steamer. Before that I had a Conair Extreme Steam that died after a week of extreme steaming on my part. I exchanged it for the Rowenta, no regrets.
I know this isn't what you're asking about exactly but I got myself an off-brand Roomba (The Ilife) and a steam mop and it has changed my life forever. The Ilife keeps up with the cleaning in my 1200 sqft apt extremely well even with my dog and the porch door left open for extended amounts of time. I've had the ILife for about 6 months and it's still running strong. Hasn't broke with me accidentally stepping on it, my 50lb bulldog trying to lay on it, and the dining room chair falling on it.
They also make bots that have a mopping attachment that's pretty cool, I've never tried it though. If you want to feel extra clean an air purifier will help quite a bit. It'll help keep dust down. That's my next big purchase.
Heat kills them. Look for a small steamer, something like this should do fine: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003OAB5AM
Steam the heck out of everything you can't put in the dryer. Check cracks in walls and such by the couch especially.
There is also food grade diatomaceous earth. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00JFRR4VW
HOWEVER, make sure you get facial protection when treating AND, if you treat with this, you should probably inform your landlord. Their pest control company needs to know the place was treated with DE.
Steamer
I got you
I have this McCulloch Steamer and absolutely love it. Takes a while to heat up though.
However, if money is no concern, check out these options: Steamers at Detailed Image

more money than I wanted to spend
but hey, it gets tile super-clean, makes the grill sparkly with minimal effort, and, and, it murders bed bugs. Worth it.
Yes ABSOLUTELY! This one. It comes with a ton of different attachments, one of which is a pressure jet, so basically a power washer with steam.
I ordered this instead
https://www.amazon.co.uk/500mL-Pharmaceutical-Isopropyl-Alcohol-Isopropanol/dp/B00WLAS9W8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498944758&sr=8-1&keywords=alcohol+100
For £24.85 (£17.86 + £6.99 delivery to Germany) you can get a 3.25kg bag of Yorkshire tea!!! With 1040 tea bags, it works out to 2.4p or 2.7 cents per bag :)
This is the one i have. its been very nice so far.
Not vacuum related, but I'm curious if you have any experience or recommendations for a steam cleaner? I was looking at this one on Amazon, Wagner 0282014 On-Demand 915 Power Steamer. But I'm not sure about the quality of some the brands I see.
It's seriously the best thing ever. I have this one and it gets my floors super clean and sanitized. It also has an attachment to do carpets. My favorite part is that you can remove the head and use it as a handheld steamer to clean pillows, matresses, etc.
Dirt Devil I love it.
I have also used this one and I really prefer the Dirt Devil one.
Steam cleaner? https://www.amazon.com/PurSteam-Handheld-Pressurized-Cleaner-Accessory/dp/B06XHXFHWG
Non-mobile version right here.
I just scrubbed a kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom tile floor and it turned out amazing! Here's what I used: This grout cleaner with this amazing grout brush. Then I used a larger scrub brush like this with this tile cleaner. Anything that didn't come off with that I scraped off with a razor blade scraper like this. When I was done I sealed the grout with this. I used a small artist paint brush to apply it. The brush that comes on the bottle isn't very useful.
This may be overkill if you're just trying to get the job done, but I wanted to do the job right (and get rid of a gross odor from the old roommate) and make sure I wouldn't have to do it again for a while. I'll use my steam mop to maintain it, as the whole apartment is tile.
Fear cuts deeper than swords.

Use a hardwood steam mop. Be aware that most mfgs do not suggest using one and to use it sparingly. We use it every few months on the entire place and more often on the high traffic areas that get kind of gross.
https://smile.amazon.com/Hoover-Steam-TwinTank-Cleaner-WH20200/dp/B004Q7CK56
It's fast to use. I can do our ~600sqft bedroom in a few minutes. I use it more when we have all the windows open as we get a lot of dust and junk in.
Just going to comment on McCulloch steam cleaners cause I bought one this winter.
I love it. Have used it to clean my girlfriend's engine bay and get a few stains out from her interior. I also use it about once every 4-6weeks to clean any residue on our hardwood floors.
The specific one I picked up in the witner is the MC1385. I got it for $150 new on amazon (you can hate if you want). The larger boiler gives so much steam time it is annoying if you overfill it. Plus it is the only one with an aluminum boiler which compared to plastic suffers less degradation from heat and wont release harmful toxins into the steam.
I use this style of steamer as it allows precision application of the steam
I got some from Amazon.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/500mL-Pharmaceutical-Isopropyl-Alcohol-Isopropanol/dp/B00WLAS9W8?ie=UTF8&ref_=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item
I bought this Bissell model: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0091YYUAM/
Fuck just a mop. I bought THIS THING and it's amazing. It has a mop attachment, but it also as a nozzle that will blast insanely hot steam into every crevice, corner and cranny you can find. I turned my bathroom grout from brown to white, blasted soap scum off of my shower stall that even bleach wouldn't kill, and I STEAM CLEANED MY FUCKING ENGINE BAY WEARING NOTHING BUT A SPEEDO. It has a wallpaper removing attachment, glass squeegee attachment, and two extension posts to make it as long or as short as you want. It also has a 48 ounce tank that lasts for about an hour straight.
It's also like $80. So you could buy three of them.
.74!
I would absolutely LOVE it if I got a gift card. I am saving up for a steam mop so I can clean my apartment. My cat has had some really bad tummy issues, causing him to have a lot of fecal accidents =( Needless to say, my wood floors need a regular cleaning and the mop would be wonderful to have. Thanks for the amazing contest!
EDIT: Link
Here it is: look at the attachments. This one looks good http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004XVM19A/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?keywords=vapamore%20steam%20cleaner&qid=1382320022&ref_=sr_1_cc_1&s=aps&sr=1-1-catcorr
No, don't use contact cleaner!
You can get isopropyle alcohol on Amazon pretty cheap. A 500ml bottle for £6 or 1 litre for £7 both with free delivery.
I'm sure you can't go wrong with the VX5000, but if you're not ready to spend that much on a steamer. This "new" McCullough steamer was just brought up on AutoGeek http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G00BTEA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
I suggest a steam mop for deeper cleaning.
For casual weekly cleaning or whatever I have a reusable Libman mop. Basically it's a Swifer that you fill yourself and wash the pad.
I make this homemade cleaner and it works wonders.
I have original hardwood floors from the 1930's and I swear by the techniques above. It's both gentle and effective.
Do not use Murphy's Oil Soap unless your floors are unfinished wood floors!
I've had all-over tile floors for years, and the Bissell Steam n' Sweep has saved me so much time! It vacuums and steam cleans at the same time. It's free to maintain, since it only requires water and washing the reusable mats.
hey man, is this one good?
I'm kinda freaking out about breathing bad stuff. At Boots they told me the surgical spirit wasn't a good idea.
Thanks for the assist. I understand the "crater" concept and I've tried that too, but there wasn't any marked improvement overall. He does not have long hair. In fact, his hair is markedly shorter than the other cats in the house.
Since my original post, I created and am using what I call a "sponge mat" for in front of his litter box. It's just a shallow tray, a bit deeper than a typical cafeteria-type tray, with a big "sponge sheet" in it that I keep damp. Every morning I add about half a up to a cup of water to the tray and that lasts the whole day, enough to keep the sponge damp but not soaking wet. When he steps out of the litter box his feet are "washed" by the damp sponge. He hated it at first but now he's used to it, and it's almost completely eliminated the urine tracking from the floor. I rinse out the sponge with diluted disinfectant every weekend.
For what remains, the steam mop that I'm using works wonderfully and is a huge step up from the Swiffer Wet-Jet that I used to use. I mop the floor every morning (takes less than five minutes) and it's dry almost instantly, and I really like that it's not leaving any chemicals behind. (It also has the great side-effect of melting off things like paint and glue that my daughter's crafting practices tends to leave behind.) I have one of those Glade plug-in air fresheners that use the little bottle of scented oil; I replace that bottle about every six weeks and it keeps any lingering smell in check.
I use a strip lamp like this one from Amazon as it provides even light all over the model. I also have a daylight bulb in the ceiling of the room I paint in so that I don't get harsh shadows and the colours show true.
this is the one i have- i like the older model better (mine broke), but this still does the job. bisssell seems to be higher rated so might be worth a try!
http://www.amazon.com/Shark-Steam-Pocket-Mop-S3501/dp/B0028MB3HM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1405121984&sr=8-4&keywords=steam+mop
the hot steam is supposed to sanitize, this is what it says
"Super-Heated Steam delivers 99.9% Sanitization against germs and bacteria to deep clean and sanitize all your wood and hardfloors."
I use a big plastic paint scraper/putty knife to scrape off the excess waste, then either spray everything down with vinegar water or poop off before wiping down with a cloth. A steam cleaner (I use one of these) helps with really stuck-on messes.
One of my cages is 6' tall x 6' wide x 3' deep and it's impractical for me to take it outside to hose it down, even when the weather is good. So the cages get steam cleaned once a week, and are given spot wet cloth cleanings three times a week. The longer you leave it, the more work it is and the more you just want to take them out and hose them down. If you just do a little every few days, it makes it far easier to manage!
The Little Green Machine is honestly just a pain in the ass. It doesn't work that well, tends to gunk up and clog with any decent usage, and doesn't have the power to extract all that moisture. It CAN work on full interiors, but I gave up on that a while ago. It's just not big enough or powerful enough, and the heat option barely warms the water. Fabric and carpets will get quite wet and you'll need to air them out with a box fan or two overnight.
That said, I was able to do this to an old Accord:
Pic 1
Pic 2
It just took a LONG time and a LOT of effort.
A professional extractor is the way to go here, but they're really expensive, so not an option unless you're doing a lot of cars.
This is the steamer I have. It's held up nicely and works pretty well: http://www.amazon.com/Wagner-915-500-Watt-On-Demand-Steamer/dp/B003PGQI3Y
But it is this is what I use https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00WLAS9W8/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467199405&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=100%25+isopropyl&dpPl=1&dpID=514uRq74GhL&ref=plSrch

I got this exact one for $112

You might want something more like this, as that's what I have and I use several of the attachments just for the sofa itself.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T56FK96/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_CkgAwbA49K0Y7
I use the steamer for many other things in my house like spots on the carpet/rugs, window sills in the bathroom that get mildewy in the cracks... all kinds of things! It really is a great tool to have around. One of those things that you never knew you needed until you have it lol!
The one you were looking at looks like it's only really used for wrinkles in things. Make sure though to test in an inconspicuous spot before attempting to do the whole sofa, I don't know if colors or other fabrics are effected by the high heat. I have tried my steamer on a faux silk dress that had a ton of wrinkles and it worked well for that.
Good luck! I hope you're able to bring your sofa back to life!
I'll say that nothing compares to my full-size Jiffy steamer, but as far as travel-sized goes, I like my Rowenta travel steamer much better than I did the travel Jiffy. Their travel iron, while small, works well enough to use on a daily basis too, and its steam function is powerful enough to use as a steamer for touch-ups.
Bonus- Capes make you feel super. When you're super you need a super snack to keep yourself ready to thwart all those evil plans!
http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-TwinTank-Steam-Mop-WH20200/dp/B004Q7CK56/
Way better than a swiffer. We just use water and vinegar in ours, have had no issues with clogs or leaks, and it heats up very quickly.
You still need to use elbow grease, but this beats getting on your hands and knees and scrubbing. Leverage.
Bissell PowerFresh Lift-Off Pet Steamer, Tile, Bathroom, Hard Wood Floor Cleaner, 1544A Steam Mop, Orange https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011LS47SA/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_YH8nDbRN8QNJ2
I love this thing. And it's a 1544. My poor memory is to blame.
Shark Steam Mop Masterrace - You can refill it with the cleaner of your choice.
Something like this will work. You might be able to rent a similar device at a tool rental place.
You could also go with a handheld steamer, but that’s more for masochists if you have more than a single room of tile.

It’s ok I would recommend a bigger one if you have the money!

So apparently this stuff is 2-4x more powerful than ethanol but produces similar effects. Maybe dilute it down a little https://www.amazon.co.uk/500mL-Pharmaceutical-Isopropyl-Alcohol-Isopropanol/dp/B00WLAS9W8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496959438&sr=8-1&keywords=ethanol

BISSELL 39N7A/39N71 Steam Shot Hard-Surface Cleaner, Light Green https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001EYHAGS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_rzb0CbVCZ4K3Y
Was a bit cheaper when I got it, but ten more dollars ain’t bad
YES! Just don't get a cheap one. They don't get the water hot enough. This one is $60 on Amazon ($45 damaged box new condition on Amazon warehouse) and it gets so hot I could burn myself. That's good.
http://www.amazon.com/BISSELL-Steam-Select-Titanium-94E9T/dp/B007VFYCSI
Just look at reviews, even highly reviewed ones can not be very good. Like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Bissell-Steam-Hard-Floor-Cleaner-1867-7/dp/B000RPVHZU/
It just doesn't get hot enough according to a lot of negative reviews.
I have this steamer, it worked great for removing several rooms of wallpaper before we moved into our house. It even comes with an attachment just for wallpaper removal.
https://www.amazon.com/Wagner-915-On-Demand-Power-Steamer/dp/B003PGQI3Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1501539752&sr=1-1&keywords=wagner+steamer
then to remove the bulk of the adhesive I used this
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Chomp-1-gal-WP-Environmental-Solutions-Wallpaper-Stripper-5300GC/203192818.
After those two steps I let it dry up over night, and sanded down the walls. I tried just sanding without removing adhesive, but it seemed to gum up the sandpaper pretty quick. Good luck!
editI put the wrong steamer model.
This one would probably be better to help get in cracks where they hidehere
I want to clean the seats on two civics and I have used an upholstery cleaner in an aerosol can with the brush attached before but it is very tedious. My question is would i be able to clean my seats using a steam cleaner like this? https://www.amazon.com/Bissell-Hard-Surface-Cleaner-39N7A-39N71/dp/B001EYHAGS/ref=sr_1_13?keywords=car+seat+cleaner&qid=1565818857&s=gateway&sr=8-13

I know it would be much different than a commercial auto steam cleaner but do you think it would be worth my money or would it be a waste of time?
Our Bissell is great. We've had to replace the mop pads due to use/wear, but it's still running strong since 2007.

The Shark Genius Hard Floor Cleaning System is a pretty awesome steam mop. I recently moved to a place with all tile and if makes cleaning it a lot quicker than a normal swiffer or mop.
