Keep this in mind. If somebody wants to get in, they'll get in. Any camera system you get will show the crime after the fact. Any possibility of capturing after the fact requires a lot of luck.

That being said, one of the best things is to deter the crime.

During the day: Have a super cheap compact FM radio that turns on when plugged in. Place it near the door just loud enough that somebody could hear it if they stood next to your door. This can give the illusion that somebody is home. Use Wi-Fi or timer electrical plugs.

If you have a patio slider, get an Anti-Lift lock bar, runs about $20 online.

You can get an electronic alarmed door stop to use while you are home. Again, without a strong door frame, doors can get kicked in pretty easily. It's not really about the lock itself, it's the door frame.

For valuables. Have an inconspicuous box or container to temporarily hide the goods.

For example: A jewelry box in zip lock bag in a cat litter box or empty bag of food product.

If you have checks, hide them too. Not in a mattress, drawer or closet shelf.

Finally, get Apartment Renter's insurance. Usually $10k will do well to cover lost electronics.

Not mentioned here; but IMO any camera will put people on notice that there is a camera present. I think my neighbors think I'm a bit on the paranoid side; yet there have been no problems in my neighborhood for some time, and others nearby have had break ins, car burglaries; etc. I also have a back alley; and this keeps people away from the cars and garbage in the rear alley (last Christmas we had a car break in).

I don't however, recommend Ring Cameras; (doorbell is fine; but put another 4-5MP camera out there). Why? Better granularity /clarity in terms of visibility; esp at night. I recommend Reolink for their great night vision.

I started with the excellent Reolink Argus 2's because of the exceptional night vision; have moved up to their 5MP dome camera for my rear driveway. I would recommend the Reolink PoE or Wifi (I am using 5ghz wifi with no problems) system. In the front, for appearances sake, I am using the ring doorbell2 with a solar powered (solar array is in a flower pot near the front door) Argus2 higher up. In the back, a Reolink 422W (vandal resistant dome) under the garage door frame. I'm very pleased.

I don't need an NVR; I'm using SD cards and my phone app and Windows client on my PC to run it.

It's alright; it was really cheap when I just wanted to try one out. There are better ones that are actually built into your rear view mirror so it doesn't take up any real estate on your windshield. It records in 3-minute increments and then will overwrite the oldest one (if I don't tag it to save it).

I haven't actually had to produce anything to the police yet for any type of incident, but I have had a few arguments with cabbies where I pointed out I had a dash cam and they stopped yelling and drove off.

What about a baby monitor camera with an app on the phone? This is ours - you pull up the app and see him in real time. Obviously not a permanent situation, but might be good for this learning phase to give him privacy but also give you peace of mind.

I have two wyze cams outside. They're both in outdoor housings with desiccant packs in them. They're under eves, which does help keep them from getting direct rain. This is the housing I have them in. They've worked flawlessly so far.

As for SD cards, I have a 64gb micro SD in each camera. Continuous recording has come in handy in the past few days as one of my cameras caught a car accident and officers were able to determine who was likely at fault.

Absolutely love my Yi Home cams. I recently got one of their outdoor cams for my porch instead of a doorbell cam. They also make panning dome cams.

They have all the features of a Nest cam, with a fraction of the price and a SD card slot. They even look like they are Nest hardware in a slightly different shell.

They have relatively inexpensive kits on amazon. Though I would look into who has the best products in your price range, these types of kits are common.

If you want to tinker and set up a custom system look into the RaspberryPi. You get to choose your camera equipment and hard drive and everything else is run by the computer (the Pi itself). There are a few people with instructions on how they set theirs up. This video is what got me interested in the Rasberry Pi.

I second getting some webcams. I purchased Yi Home Cams from Amazon and they have been great. It sends an alert to my phone when it detects motion, along with a 6 second clip uploaded to the cloud (for free). You can also subscribe to their enhanced cloud service which will send all recorded video up to their cloud servers.

My cousin bought a Blink camera and mounted it in an unreachable location on the exterior of his house. Although pricier than the Yi, it runs on batteries so no need to worry about running power - the battery supposedly lasts up to 2 years. Like the Yi, it captures video and sends an alert to your phone when it detects motion.

Of course with both, you will need an active internet connection with wifi.

By far my favorite IFTTT script is for my security camera at the front door of my house. When motion is detected, my camera system shoots out an email with a still image to the IFTTT email address. Basically, my wrists buzzes with a picture of who is at the front door every time someone walks up to my house. Technology is amazing.

I would recommend a Hikvision NVR like this, and 3MP or 4MP Hikvision IP cameras to suit your installation locations. It is important to choose the camera type based on where you will install it - I like to use dome cameras for front porches (vandal-resistant), bullets for back yard etc (deterrent, flexibility of positioning).

I have written an in-depth guide on how to choose IP cameras here on my blog and these are my recommended IP cameras. I use Hikvision bullets and domes myself.

It looks like there are many that work, but this one is what we have.

Outdoor cam is in testing phase. Wyze says it's still on track for release before the end of the year. Be aware that the outdoor cam will certainly cost more. Wyze employees have said it will have battery/usb power options, PIR motion detection and have a wireless indoor hub. For direct information anyone can search for wyze employee posts on their outdoor cam roadmap thread.

You might want to just get a outdoor case for your cam. I have this one out in direct sun, rain, snow, no problems. Most protective case I've found after searching all over. If you can place your cam right under an overhang, I've seen many people say they do perfectly fine with no case.

If you're concerned, I'm going to recommend installing these:

These are better than a security system because:

It deters crime in your area, not just someone breaking in.

It's cheaper long term ($300 one-time vs $30 / month).

It's video, so it can serve multiple purposes.

It has a recording log, can watch packages, check on 'if someone arrived' etc...

I got Camera 1 hooked up to my business, $300 + installation which was another $300 (you can get it done cheaper). That linked the Cameras to my phone, so I can watch my business on my phone, track customers, etc, security, packages, and storms.

And I've used my footage to assist crime in the area, and simply knowing that cars coming in and out of my area are being recorded reduces crime in and of itself. Not to mention I got 30 day recording and can expand from 4 to 8 cameras any time. No additional / monthly fees.

I would suggest a NVR system. It is all in one. You plug the cameras into the back of the box. You can plug a monitor into the box and see all cameras connected. Don't hook it to the internet so it cannot be hacked.

I have two Zmodo DVR's like these, set up. The cams aren't very good, specially at night. I've upgraded most of them with better quality ones. On my android I use IP Cam Viewer which works great to access the DVR. To access it through the web you have to use IE with an activeX plug in. I'm not crazy about that part. I've also installed a Q-See model that had it's own 7-8" monitor. I liked the Zmodo DVR better but the Q-See had better cameras.

Just about any modern DVR is going to have web access. Between the two that I've had experience with I prefer the Zmodo. You can get a stand alone DVR for less then $100. A decent cam similar to these and be up and running. After that it's just adding stuff. A hard drive if you want to record, more cameras, etc.

I've tried IP cams. They're okay. WIth all cams you need power and signal. Standard type cams that you'd use with a Zmodo have one cable that supplies power and signal and must be run back to wherever you have the DVR. IP Cams need a power cable and a network cable. The network cable needs to run to your switch, power can come from anywhere you have AC. There are WiFi cams but I've found that they aren't very good. You still need to run power to them but not a network cable. I've found just ONE cam really slows down my WiFi to everything else. I can't imagine what it would be like with several cams. With my Zmodo I haven't notice and network issues at all.

Currently my Zmodo DVR is in the garage. I have 5 cams attached to it. I've run a network cable, CAT5, to it. I don't have a montior attached to it. I just use my phone or IE for viewing. IP Cam Viewer is also Chromecast compatible so if I want I can see my cams on any of my TV's.

Nice. I just got mine about a month ago and I found this decent case on Amazon. I figured it was unnecessary after I had purchased it because I too mounted my cam under an overhang. We'll see how it lasts through the winter and if it was a Wyze investment.

Figured it's time to beef up my home security, partially because all of this is interesting to me and 'why not' and also because I've got expensive hobbies and stuff in my house that I'd like to protect.

I've got a pretty small house, <700 sq/ft in the corner of downtown that isn't the best area of town but... hey, I live in a small town... not much crime here to begin with. But earlier this year I did have my car vandalized (Well, every car on the street got a nice blue stripe of spray paint as someone drove down the road with a passenger spraying cars...) and aside from a neighbor having a can of gas stolen out of the back of his truck... pretty tame area even if it is the 'bad side' of town.

I believe this is more than enough for me. What my plans are is simply pointing one east/west out front, which will cover the sidewalk/gate/mailbox/my car on the street. One under my porch overhang facing my front door where I enter/leave and where USPS/UPS/FedEx leaves me packages and one facing the back yard where I very rarely but sometimes park my car.

I live next door to relatives who has cameras on their house, and theirs would hit any blind spots that mine may miss. The two houses combined would provide good security coverage.



What are your thoughts on that camera system? Adequate? I'm not particularly requiring anything fancy since I work from home and AM home 90% of the time. The remote viewing is nice but would rarely be used.

Do some research on PoE (Power over Ethernet) cameras. Basically one wire between a DVR and each camera is all you need for power and video. Here's an example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016UCNP3A

I purchased this NVR bundle from Reolink Amazon Link which is decent. The camera housings are study metal and look pretty sleek installed. I mounted my first one on a soffit and drilled a hole to get the cable inside. POE is a HUGE help, didn't have to find separate power.

Only major gripe I have is the motion detection is visual, not thermal, so it constantly gives alerts for random things like a leaf falling. They don't make an IR motion camera with POE that I can find either, so that's a bummer.

I'd say I'm 75% satisfied with the whole system.

FYI, if you get one of these and ever need to reset the password, you have to email customer service to get a helper application, not a big deal unless you set it and forget it.

I've looked into the same deal for my SNES Classic and a small portable LCD monitor was the most cost effective option. They make these little 7" LCD monitors w/ HDMI and built-in speakers for security camera type usage that remind me of the portable LCD for the PSone. They usually sell for around $50-60.

I'd invest in something like this. I used to hang my targets from practice on my back door and windows.

Also, these home survellience systems aren't that expensive, and will at least help you identify anyone that you may not have gotten a clear look at.

Last thing I'd add are some motion-sensitive outdoor lights in the front and the back. The dog is your surest bet of course, it's basically the best notification system for an intruder.

Apologies, I didn't realize that was a requirement. While the Reolink cameras speak ONVIF, the Reolink NVR only works with Reolink cameras. My guess is, their financial model depends on everything being sold as a package.

The problem I had with Swann and Lorex was push notification and app UI. I ultimately settled on this EzViz system and I've loved it. It pushes notifications right to my phone, I can monitor all 4 cameras at the same time and the motion detection hasn't been super touchy.

You don't have enough to prove anything. You might want to snag something like this. Yeah, it's some money, but it'll validate what is going on.

More generally, your state has a Handbook, according to that handbook:

Set up a camera thing. If you catch your landlord in your space then I would get a lawyer to sue to break lease and move elsewhere as soon as possible. That's creepy as hell, but your State says it's not OK. You just need to have the proof. Once you do, get out.

So that was just a little project/hobby I was working on.

-I used a small 7 inch screen which I already owned. Only a resolution of 1024 x 600. But I wasn't going to buy a mini monitor with 720p native res just for this. It's this one.

An OTG adapter to plug into the power port of the PSC. And a 128GB USB drive plugged into the OTG adapter.


The PSC is running the latest AutoBleem build with a custom theme. I've upgraded the custom kernel to take advantage of OTG support. FYI, what "OTG" means here is that you can plug your OTG adapter into the rear of the console and connect your usb drive directly to the OTG adapter, thus freeing up the front controller ports and bypassing the power issues of the console.

This camera has a swivel lens. So I put aside the giant suction cup mount (similar to GPS mounts) and instead used some double sided tape, a 1/4" plastic wedge, and velcro to mount the camera almost flush with the window. Most people don't notice it and those that do assume it's radar or gps.

I stuffed the wire along the top of the window seal and ran it to a switched 12v source inside the dash. Those lights you see in the amazon link stick out really badly so I colored over them with a dry erase marker. They also don't tell you that they randomly ship the SD or MicroSD versions without warning.

Either of those will need a power cable run to each camera. The longer the power runs are, the more you should go with the 2nd option. It is surprising how long and how much a hassle pulling the cables can be. Do you have access via an attic to the eaves?

I tend to agree, that if possible you should look at returning this and going with a wired POE based camera system. You pull just as much wire and the camera quality will be better. At a high level, three or four HD IP bullet cams and a security NVR will run around $600 or so.

Simplest thing is if you can run wired Ethernet which will supply power an data connection for cameras. Bullet cams provide better night vision while dome cams are more vandal-proof and difficult to knock out of position.

   All of these solutions require internet service for remote alerts/monitoring. Some require subscriptions for online access.
   
   Most products that have remote access either require you to run your own webserver or subscribe to the vendor's service.
   
   In order to get a text message out you'll need to find a product that has a cellular modem built in. All of the products I know of that have this are very, very, expensive. (or come from Indian/Chinese dealers with no support and a 30 day shipping time)
   
   An alternative, if you are technically inclined is to add a 3G/4G dongle to a Raspberry Pi, but I don't know of any products that integrate the wireless functionality with any security/camera applications automatically.

My advice is stay away from the high energy hyper breeds. Mix breeds can be hard to pin point so you would want to get them from a foster situation where someone has spent time with the dog.

Also there are all kinds of options such as Rover or Wag or local dog walker to come let your dog out in the middle of the day.
Security Camera for if you go that route. Also just a good thing to have to check in on your pup during the day.

Amazon also sells these sod boxes that you can train dogs to use just like a cat litter box. Fresh Patch or Synthetic Grass or I’m sure you could build your own. I’ve heard of people buying a small kiddy pool and filling it with dirt or sand for the dog to go in.

It really depends on your budget but it’s totally possible.

If you don't want to spend a lot, these Yi cameras are an amazing value and work really well. No cloud subscription is required (though it is an a available option), data can be stored locally on an SD card, and live and past footage can be pulled up at any time from the app. I have setup many of these over the past 2 years. Essentially a Nest Cam at 1/6 the cost. I continue to be pleasantly surprised by how well they work.

They also make an outdoor version that I have been meaning to try as well.

Real Time Stream Protocol (RTSP) is a standardized protocol for streaming audio/video from cameras (among other things).

Basically it makes it so that I can connect several different brands of (RTSP) cameras to one central server that records them all and sends notifications to my phone when it detects movements.

$30 and then you'll want an SD card if you want to do loop recording. They also have a 2-pack for $50 it looks like, and other model types. I have 3 of those kind now, 1 dome camera, and 2 outdoor cameras - all Yi Home. They work really great for the price, and there's an Android and Desktop app for it too. Some reviews complained about the app permissions, FWIW, but I can live with it.

Wireless 1080p (or 720p) is flakey with multiple feeds if you live in a well populated area. Unless you are renting your home just wire it. If you are lazy buy power-line ethernet repeaters. I would recommend a PoE router and PoE cameras. Really easy to run because you only need one wire. I would NOT recommend putting security software recording on a computer that is likely to be stolen. Get cameras with a microSD slot for recording and one centralized NVR (network video recorder) that can be hidden. I was interested in this product as well. I did not buy it though. The reason I didn't isn't because of reviews or price. It was convenience. I bought an Annke system off Amazon. The reviews were more positive than negative, but it's a 1080p Lite 4 cam 8 channel system, wired. I couldn't really be more pleased. Out the door with the system, a 1tb hdd and 4-100' cables was just under 200(i didnt need the cables as the system included 4-100s).

My advice to you is do it. Obviously locks and surveillance only keep honest people out or criminals second guessing the risk/reward value but I love having a security surveillance system. I've heard good things about the night owl though. Sure it's not Arlo or whatever but my system works fine for what I need, is upgradable for the future. Here is what I got

I've bought and installed cameras for my properties at a cost of ~$500 each property. Its a great investment and provide a better sense of security for the tenants as well, it can record 24/7 for up to 3 weeks (higher if you get more storage space).

I would view the recording when a tenant complaint about something like illegal dumping, car window broken and such. With a big posted sign and cameras in place, there seem to be less illegal activities.

I don't have much experience with home dvr kits as I set up commercial ones which had Windows installed, but it looks like this one just needs an internet connection to stream.

I would suggest against wireless because you still need a wire for power so they are never completely wireless. But if you are insistent, yes she can get a system but she would need a Wi-Fi router. Wireless doesn't make sense in most situations, and especially in hers.

Instead I would suggest something like this (maybe look for better quality cameras) which will give you/her a better picture with out the lag. Then buy a hard drive and a monitor and she will be able to use the system to record and view. Obviously she will not be able to view cameras away from her home.

That's so scary! I'm glad you're getting the locks changed! Have you gotten a camera yet? If not, I recommend this one. It's small and fairly inexpensive. It has night vision, motion detection, and records sound also. It runs via a phone app, and you can talk into the microphone and it plays through the camera. We have two that we use as video monitors for our daughter since it was so much cheaper than a true baby video monitor. My husband sometimes checks the app when he's at work so it works from any distance.

Not OP, but I have a Wyze V2 on my porch in this housing. It’s mounted up under a soffit, so it’s pretty protected from any rain/snow, as long as the wind isn’t blowing straight up, and can’t even be seen until you’re actually on the porch.

My original plan was to wire an outlet into a junction box, in the attic, to plug the camera in, using the provided usb cable. But, if I ever needed to unplug it, I would’ve had to climb up in the attic to do so. So, I ended up using one of
these cables, and dropping it down to an outlet in my garage, where I could unplug it, if I ever needed to. Granted, there’s only about 6” of the cable actually exposed, as it comes out of the back of the housing (I dremel’d a new hole out of the back, and covered the original hole on the bottom) and up into the soffit, and it’s pretty much protected from the sun/whatnot. But it’s held up well, at least through the hottest months and so far into the coldest months.

Put up security cameras, I got some of these they work great and the price is right. Once installed, play nice, and let your neighbour act like the asshole, once you gather enough evidence go to the cops. Hopefully you can get a restraining order. At this point if he brings up the knife incident it's your word against his, and his credibility with cops will be in the shitter once you show them video proof of his harassment. The most important thing is to PLAY NICE.

I'm starting to add cameras around my house as well. Purchased this set for $440 during a Christmas sale. They were the only 1440p IP cameras I could find under budget. I just have to run network cables around my house to set them up, which will be the biggest pain of the project.

I followed you here after creeping from the michael porter comments. Anywho, I got a friend who bought this security camera that came with 4 cameras (upgradeable to 16). He did a lot of research and this was the product that was low-medium price point but highest value/cost ratio (hopefully that makes sense).

It has a HD that records on movement, and has a web interface so you can view everything either on the LAN or even at home if you set it up right. I'm not sure if this is the exact brand but it looks very similar and I think a lot of companies are rebranding one manufacturer's products. These are wired however, but the cables are really really long. We threaded them through the drop ceiling easily. Also the infrared nightvision is really impressive. It automatically turns on the infrared LEDS when it detects the room is dark

Decent security cameras don't cost thousands of dollars anymore. This mid-range system costs a little of over $200 and the picture is pretty clear if you look at the customer images.

The police seem like they are doing their job just fine, they are interviewing the neighborhood and the kids they did find, you can't just arrest people just on someones word.

Its the same price and you don't have to worry about any ONVIF issues. It also is a Plug and Play model so it supplies the POE for the cameras.

You will also need a HDD for storage. I use WD Purple Drives.

For work we use alot of DS-2CD2132F-I-2.8MM cameras. They do a good job for what they cost. I would be sure to update the firmware on your NVR and Cameras when you get them.

If you want space on the rear of the camera to make connections you want a CB110 for each camera. Though if they are going under the soffit you should be able to make the connections there.

I bought this nonbranded camera system and really enjoy it. Sorry I can't offer feedback on the system but maybe just the knowledge that someone else has an off brand that worked will be enough for you. It's been running for 1 year now.

As a side note i got the Ezviz because it offers IFTTT support so i can create a script to turn on motion alerts when my house is empty.

Gonna be pretty hard to get quality cameras with only $500. Yes, IP cams still record locally to a NVR, analog cameras record to a DVR. Analog is so limited, I could not recommend buying any. IP cams have the quality and clarity you seek. I would look into Reolink IP cameras, which can be purchased on Amazon, something like this.

Regarding the monitor, you could get one of those tiny, portable ones like this:

That would let you configure things and run the software, at least, though it's not a very good solution for actual coding.

When I got my VR rig, I took a serious look at the ASUS gaming laptops. The specs look nice, and I'd put more trust in ASUS than DELL (I've been screwed over by DELL all too many times). In the end I put together a mini-ITX in a very small, but not tiny case:

It's big enough for a full-size graphics card and liquid cooling on the CPU. Cooling (and price) is the main reason I went for the mini-ITX form factor. It's still reasonably portable, but you can add fans and coolers into it if your CPU runs hot.

DON'T get that kit - the pieces are ancient and on a 2200mAh battery that thing will barely fly.

Here's a suggestion: instead of a 5-inch, build a Whoop. The advantage of doing that is 1) it's much, much cheaper, and 2) you could fly the thing in the classroom if you wanted.

Shipping won't be a problem - we're getting everything from Amazon prime.

BetaFPV F4 FC - We start with this. My first thought was to use the much cheaper Silverware-based Lite board. However, the problem with that is getting a transmitter that works with it. So instead we're going to go with a Betaflight board. Part of what you can do is use the Project Mockingbird tune on it and explain how the settings impact flight.

Beta65S Frame (Package of 2) - Ideally, we would use the set that includes the frame and motors, but sadly that's currently out of stock so we're going to have to buy the frame and motors separately.

These 7x16 motors - The BetaFPV motors are better, but those are out of stock at the moment. Plus, you're not going to be racing this thing, so we're not going to worry about great motors for this project.

FPV Camera and VTX - Again, we're not going for the greatest quality here, just something that will work. If you have access to a 3D printer, you can print off a mount. Otherwise, we're going to secure this to the board with some outdoor mounting tape and small rubber band hair ties.

Props - We're going with 4-blade for thrust - You get 16 of them, so 4 pairs.

Now you have a quad. What's our total price (as of today on Amazon, all with Prime shipping)?

$87.94 - Yup, you have a Betaflight enabled quad with OSD for less than $100. And this quad will actually be a decent flying one too. The only thing you will need to solder are the power wires to the camera.

We also need batteries and a charger. For the charger we're going to go with a basic USB charger. Nothing fancy, but it will do. For batteries, these batteries will be fine for your purposes. And we get 4 of them. We're at $108.92, with Prime shipping.

Now we have our aircraft, battery, and charger. We still need a transmitter and some FPV gear. This is where stuff gets really expensive, but we have some options that will work for your project.

First, BETAFPV sells a really basic transmitter that uses FrSKY for $39. Normally, I'd say get a QX7, but we're artificially restricting ourselves to Amazon Prime for this. This really is a no-frills, toy-grade transmitter, but it works. And now our total cost is at $150.

For FPV, you have two options. The first is a bargain-basement headset. Here's one for $50. Is it going to be a great headset? Heck no! But it will work just fine.

The other option is to display the FPV feed on a TV. If you're going to do an in-class presentation, I'd go that way. Make sure you have a TV with an analog input though! Here's a cheap FPV receiver with analog output. $16! You don't get diversity, you don't get a great antenna, but again, we're just going for the basics. This receiver requires a 12V power supply, which could either be a 3S LiPo or a plug-in one. Since you don't have any LiPos, let's just go with a wall power supply. $13.

Either way, you're at under $200 all-in. For your project, you can show how to install Betaflight, show how different tuning parameters affect flight, and even fly indoors for an in-class demonstration! Plus, if you decide to get into the hobby, you can get yourself a QX7 and a better set of FPV goggles and have a decent quad for indoor flying.

I haven't included any soldering equipment - for this, you just need a fine-tip soldering iron. You just need to attach the four lines of the FPV camera to the board - red to positive, black to negative, the camera output to the camera input on the board, and the board video output to the VTX input on the camera. The connections will be VERY small, so this is where getting help would be a good idea.

For the camera mount, there are any number of them on Thingiverse that would work just fine. Otherwise, get some 3M mounting tape and the small rubber bands used for kid's hair. Put the mounting tape on the board and use the rubber band between the tiny little nubs on the side of the frame to secure the camera down. If you have access to a 3D printer, this camera mount will work just fine. 3D printing the parts can be part of your class project.

This would give you literally everything you need to fly, some opportunities to set up Betaflight and tune things, and is something you could actually use if you decide to fly FPV when the project is done. Plus, everything's on Amazon Prime so the shipping should not be a problem.

I got Yi Home cameras and some outdoor housings. Those two with extension cable and SD cards costs around $65 each. No subscription needed. I’ve had them up all year through snow, way below freezing temperatures and extreme heat with no issues. The housing I used is different, and it actually added a glare when the night vision is on, but my neighbor has the ring outdoor camera and out footage quality is extremely similar if not the same. Yi does make an outdoor camera, but it wasn’t out by the time I got this set up, but it works too well to replace

I haven't used it for a while but try Netcam Studio, its free (for 2 video sources). But scan for malware nonetheless.

Also if you have some money you could invest in those standalone camera's like this one, the advantages include motion detection and online viewing of the camera, also it can record the video to an SD card on the camera or online so even if the camera is stolen you still have the footage, plus you don't need a PC running all the time to use it. Some are as cheap as $50 so it might be worth your money.

musicianspro insurance. The base premium is $150 a year but it covers about $15,000 worth of gear at that level. I've been using them for a few years and have already had to cover a loss (tele fell out of the trailer while touring) and it was a breeze. If you have renter's insurance for your apartment they won't cover gear unless it's on a specific rider and my renter's insurance rider cost would have been higher than the cost of the specific gear insurance, plus a much higher deductible.

I keep all my serial numbers listed on my computer, on an online server and in a small fire safe in my apartment. A good tip is to place a business card or piece of paper with your name and address inside the guitar somewhere like under the pickguard, and somewhere for amps.

Aside from that, lock your doors, don't leave stuff in a car over night, and if you're really worried about break-ins get a cheap DVR camera system.

Hello, this is the camera. It actually offers a cloud service which I ended up taking because it's pretty cheap. The night vision also works surprisingly well. My original question was more about if deterrence was better than recording a thief.

Just so I get this straight, you want to put the dashcam inside your house or your car? It sounds like you want to put it inside the car but I'm just checking. Additionally, unless you angle it straight up, I'm not sure you'll get a good angle on the third floor balcony from the windshield of a car.

To answer your question, you could run the camera off a booster pack for cars if you have one. They're usually fairly large in capacity and have a cigarette lighter plug included. Something like this.
Some cameras just use a USB cable that plugs into a cigarette lighter adapter so you could also use a large battery bank and use it on motion detect like that. At that point though, I'm not sure if something like a cheap 1080p security camera like this one wouldn't do the same job. Just be careful with the battery bank if you live in a place where it gets really hot.

There are so many to choose from. Hikvision is a good compromise between cost and quality. There are quite a couple of products out there that, although branded with other logos, have Hikvision hardware underneath. I have used Swann and Hikvision NVR and between the two I would recommend Hikvision.

I run various branded cams on my NVR and if you are not after fancy features like number plate recognition or item removal .... most of the are well supported.

I would start with an 8 port NVR device as you will inevitably want to add more once you stat and from my experience a 4 port is just not enough for us DIY types.

I would recommend something like below as a start.

This will work for cams up to 6MP but will probably only allow you to record 4 x 5MP cams simultaneously. If you need more you will have to record at lower quality. You would also have to fit it with HDD’s

You also get NVR models with alarm inputs (digital) that you can combine for instance door sensors with you NVR for better reliability. Just some food for thought.

You get much better spec’d Hikvision NVR’s as well other brand but you have to start somewhere.

I don't have goggles or a traditional display at all, I just plugged that into the 32" widescreen SD CRT that my family stopped using but never got rid of. It's great. Plop down in a recliner with Tx in hand and off I go, plus others can easily watch as well.

If you've got an old TV like I do(I've tried with HD LCDs and it doesn't work very well, so be wary about that, TVs that try to upscale the image on composite in will have a LOT of trouble with the FPV receiver I have) you can get into FPV, with sound from the model no less, for under 60 dollars.

Hi, I am one of the owners of "The Other Tales" escape room in NJ (http://www.theothertales.com). Here are some basics.

For microphones, you can use something like this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002S4G870/. I would also recommend adding HDD to the monitoring, so you can record some games. You can get one for $50 on Amazon. So, in total, the price for the monitoring system will be under $200.

Another question is, how you are going to communicate with the players? But that very much depends on the room design and tech. It can be anything - speakers, walkie-talkies, monitors that show typed texts or something as low-tech as paper notes.

I was actually looking for 'portable battery-powered mini tv' and that came up. All the other things I found had a battery included, which was great, but then they didn't have an hdmi connection, so that didn't work. If you can find a mini tv type of thing with a built in battery, and hdmi connection, that would really be your best bet.
