The Amazon Reviews seem to be mostly positive, so perhaps they just got a lemon.

Customers didn't post many pictures, but the two I saw showed one that worked nicely and was readable, and another that worked as poorly as OP's. Assuming everyone who gave the toaster a 1-star review had the same major complaint - that it didn't actually toast the image - then around 12% of these toasters might be defective in this way. 59% of the reviews were 5-star, though.

My wife and I were gifted a $200 toaster for our wedding a couple of years ago. It has since gone down in price to $100 or so. It’s actually a fucking great toaster. It has a couple buttons that I are really great, like the “lift and look” which lifts the toast and drops it right back in with out interrupting the cycle to allow a quick peek, and the “a bit more” which puts it back in for just a bit more.

I have this and it serves the purpose. Although, a disclaimer: I generally don't like toasting sandwiches in electric grills since they don't get crunchy. They retain a slight soggy texture which I find is not the case with gas sandwich makers.

I am firmly of the opinion that toaster quality is a sign of the decline of civilization as we know it. They've only gotten worse and worse at an accelerating rate over the last two decades. Even newfangled glass, laser, and uhm... whatsit radiation models make crappy toast. I have no fewer than six, yes SIX rejected appliances from different appliance Illuminati sitting in a pile just waiting to evolve into a new life form that can actually make evenly browned toast.

You'd think for a hundred bucks they could make wires that got evenly hot when you push down the lever but Noooo. There's always something. It won't let go of the toast. It shoots the toast across the room. It consistently burns the image of Godzilla into one side (actually, that would be pretty cool). It magically reads your mind and randomly adjusts itself to the perfect inverse of what brown-ness you desire. It asks too many questions when you just want tea.

Please, someone, anyone. Invent self toasting knives soon.

MAL is great for your reading collection. IRL stuff and scanlation. But goodreads is great for stuff you actually own b/c it links to Amazon (and eBooks) and has ISBNs by volume. The insurance company has exact price points to look at of the current retail price of your books and can't skimp you the $$ by buying something cheaper with the same name (like the individual used copies of BLAME versus the nice master edition prints you actually own). This is a toaster oven. I just grabbed the first one that popped up on search. I dunno about the UK site, but the US site clearly has them. It basically IS a regular oven, but smaller and designed for baking/toasting small things quickly.

I don't think I've seen any kind of curry ready meals, but then again... I haven't really been looking. I'll keep an eye out though!

Used to have a pop-up toaster. Recently bought this grill.

Grill can be used in many more ways than a pop-up toaster. Go for the grill. Some grills come with multiple plates (for grilling and sandwich making) which are removable and easier to clean but usually more expensive.

The article looked promising, and even though some of the highest rated ones had digital readouts and cost close to $200 USD, there were a couple decent no frills options that might suit our needs. I'm kind of leaning towards this Black & Decker with wide slots, that comes in a two or four slice model. The two slice is 28.48, four slice is 35.99 and it has 978 reviews, averaging 4 out of 5 stars.

Grab one of these toasters to make the egg boiling process even easier! I know boiling water isn't hard - but I've always hated using the stove and having to clean a big pot. This toaster is GREAT! You put the water in and up to 4 eggs, press one button and 10 minutes later you have PERFECT hard boiled eggs. Just thought I'd share!
