Best $50 I spent. Let's me haul a 14' kayak on the back of mine (with a toolbox)

I have a beater pickup truck. I purchased a set of these on eBay for $88.00. Works great. I have 4 kayaks (me and the kids), soon to be 6. 4 is easy with 2 on top and 2 in the bed. 6????

You should see us when we go camping. We look like the Beverly Hillbillies

I just put these on my truck, though I got mine for $45+$45 shipping. I payed a body shop $20 to drill the holes. They're amazing and you don't have kayaks sticking out all over the place, a problem with my 12'.

Well, in a regular FWD, you could do all the basic gravel and fireroads. That should be open up a lot of places for you still.

An Impreza, for example, doesn't really sit that high, at least compared to it's sibling the Crosstrek, which is pretty much a lifted Impreza.

While mud can be an issue, you could deal with that by carrying something like these:

That way you can get unstuck.

Get one of these or something like the same concept; I bought one years ago since I have a short bed Tundra, works great. https://www.amazon.com/Goplus-Extender-Adjustable-Extension-Ladder/dp/B078S19RRQ/ref=lp_15737901_1_5?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1542321751&sr=1-5

A Weekender ladder rack should do the trick. I had one on my Sonoma many years ago, and it was great. Nice thing is the rack uprights slide out of the base so you can store them in the garage when you don't need the rack. The horizontal bar extends out pretty wide too, so you should not have a problem with a wider kayak. The 1450 is a straight horizontal bar, and the 1475 is angled. See the link below for what the 1450 looks like.

I bought those. Never needed to use them yet.

They seem pretty solid though.
