this rooftop bag from Amazon. I drove from Los Angeles, through banff, to anchorage (over 5k miles) with it on the roof. It rained everyday of our trip for a month straight and never leaked a drop of water. It's still on my roof and it's rained on us almost every day we've been in ak. Amazing deal.

Also, if you're over landing you need to get an air compressor so you can air down and up if you need. I would also recommend an inverter and an extension cord so you can plug stuff in.

Additionally, I'd invest in some anker cigarette lighter and iPhone charging cables, as well as one of those large extra charge battery packs.

Also this little light is awesome. I use it all the time.

I have a 2DR with the rear seat out and absolutely love it. Light, nimble, feels like a toy. Excellent city car actually due to parallel parking capabilities. I would only go 4DR if you have hauling needs or anything more than a significant other & dog. If you do go 2DR i'd suggest grabbing one of these: https://www.amazon.com/CURT-18153-Basket-Style-Cargo-Carrier/dp/B00JF5LRN0/ref=zg_bs_15735311_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=HR7SDTG5WGZZ1GKJCX0J

In fact I just drove across the country camping with both of them in the car and it was workable with that additional cargo space

Edit: Hard top is pretty easy to move on and off 2DR w/ 2 people, so I went hard

From my understanding Bison, Curt and Arksen are all the same rack with different branding. I found a Arksen on eBay and received a brandless rack.

u/ThatBeRutkowski · 4 pointsr/paramotor

I transport mine on a cargo carrier on the back of my Subaru brz, so if I can do it you can too. I have driven tins of hours on the highway, done probably 90mph, and never had a single problem.

Make sure you secure the prop when you transport it, I use two bungees (the loop ones with the little ball on the end, like this looped around the horizontal bars of the cage on either side, and they keep the prop horizontal and still so it doesn't turn into a wind turbine on the highway. A piece of rope will do the same thing but the bungees are nice and gentle on the prop and easy to take off.

You'll need two ratchet straps, and to figure out how to hold it down to the carrier. In terms of carriers, I'm not sure what size hitch receive you have, but I'm going to guess it's the smaller 1 1/4 inch one. I got this one. It works well, but sits a little low to the ground and took a while to put together. I also had to make a wooden base for the bottom of it. This is the same brand and sits a little higher off the ground, so if your car is low like mine you might want this as another budget option (mine scrapes leaving my driveway, not a huge deal) I also think this is the one Tucker Gott uses, it's probably the same build quality as the one I got. Sides are a little lower so might be harder to secure a fuel can.

This one seems a little nicer, but it's double the cost. Keep in mind, whatever cargo carrier you get you will need to have a flat surface to place your paramotor on. The one I got required me to make a wooden base to sit the motor on, which isn't necessarily easy. For the two others I listed, they have metal grating that you could probably place the motor on, but I personally think a piece of thin plywood bolted to the metal would work better. That way you don't have metal on metal and it gives a little better grip on the bottom of your motor.

One thing I'm not sure I like with the more expensive pro series model, is the clamp it uses on the receiver. The curt carriers use a bolt instead of a pin, and tightening that bolt locks the bar in the receiver and gets rid of most of the slop. With a normal pin, the carrier can rotate a lot so it needs some way to get rid of that. On the pro series carrier, they use a U bolt type thing that clamps down on the receiver, so Instead of just putting the carrier in and tightening one bolt like on the Curt carriers, you have to put it in, put a pin in, and tighten two nuts.

Each have their plusses and minuses, but they will all work.

This is my setup:

u/alf3311 · 4 pointsr/4Runner

Correct, you don't want gas in the vehicle. If you are looking for something easy you could get a hitch-mounted cargo tray. It will limit your off-road clearance (specifically your departure angle) but if you are just talking about camping/overlanding and not hard-core rock climbing it would probably be OK.

EDIT: I also have to add... I know a lot of people think carrying around extra gas cans looks badass but for most people it's really unnecessary. With a little bit of planning, the 25 23-gallon tank built in is enough for almost anything. Not saying you shouldn't do it, but there are definitely costs associated with the hardware required. Plus it's also a bit of a safety hazard... if you get rear-ended or back into a tree, there's a good chance those tanks will puncture and make the situation a lot worse.

u/TM531 · 4 pointsr/4Runner

I haven't used one personally since everyone but me in my hunting group has a pickup but one of these types of hitch baskets might work.

u/gaugasus · 4 pointsr/rav4club

Yep. I was surprised but the Skybox 21 fits quite nicely on my 2019. The hatch even opens fully by just a hair.

I went with OEM crossbars due to the price, these CargoLoc crossbars are great except for the wind noise while driving:

I got cargoLocs for $46 two years ago for our crosstrek and recently put them on our 19 Forester, great bars for the price. I coated mine with spray on bed liner and they have held up perfectly! They have held plenty of gear, logs, boxes, kayaks, people lol...here's the link:

So you can’t see this but on the other side I have an awning attached. The crossbars that Subaru offers have 0 overhang so I wouldn’t have been able to attach my awning to the cross bars. They are cheap and affordable but really worked well for my build

good to know, thanks for the tip.

i was even considering something like this - https://www.amazon.com/Tow-Tuff-TTF-2762KR-Steel-Carrier/dp/B004RFKBEO/ref=sr_1_22 the extra cargo space would be nice for weekend camping trips.

When I put it together I used a bit of silicone sealant at each joint and bolt to try to keep water out of the tubes to reduce the possibility of rust.

u/RasAlTimmeh · 3 pointsr/overlanding

Thanks. Steel plate is a good idea. I have this roof rack basket: https://smile.amazon.com/ARKSEN-Universal-Extension-Luggage-Carrier/dp/B013COCXDC/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=roof+rack&qid=1554443981&s=gateway&sr=8-8

It's not the best but it's pretty solid. I accidentally ran into a concrete ceiling in an underground parking structure due to lower clearance than I thought and the roof rack basket was untouched.

But it's got those skinny little bars instead of big fat one. If it was a big bar/pole, I could have used ubolts. With these skinny ones.. maybe I can use a steel plate. I can use two bolts around 2 of the skinny bars and sandwich it with a steel plate from below.

I've actually taken mine on two (going to be 3 within a few months) cross country road trips from Ohio to California. Have a torklift ecohitch installed which is a no-weld solution that bolts to the existing muffler mounting holes in the frame. Combined it with CURT's cargo carrier. Haven't had any issues yet. basket itself is about 70lbs and we usually have a couple pieces of luggage strapped down in it (Stuff that we don't need until we get to our destination. Mostly clothes;). I believe at last check Torklift rates the hitch at a max 200lb tongue weight with our vehicles. I might at some point swap out for a lighter basket though.

This is where I got mine from. They’ve been pretty solid so far and they’re decently universal! As for mysky, I opted out from fear of issues down the road as we constantly use rooftop storage and such anyway. I’ve had bad experiences with sunroofs in the past so I was leery.

u/fortinwithwill · 3 pointsr/Jeep

Mine is the Barricade roof rack from extremeterrain.com and it has a basket on it from Amazon. The roof rack is very good. I go to Moab like 20 times a year and this thing has been so awesome. It looks cool (I have had people stop me on the street to ask where I got it) and it's super tough and adds a ton of storage to the TJ. I installed mine alone in about 3 hours. It's a good purchase.

I don't own an FJ anymore, but when I did I had this cargo tray: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003NBFKDK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also bought a Rola vinyl carry bag with it:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E7WLJW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The only thing about it that was a drag is you can't open the rear door of the FJ when there is stuff mounted on the rack. You can still get to stuff in the back of your FJ through the window, but not sure if that will work for you. Something to consider, anyway.

Legality aside we bought one of those a few years back. It broke on our cross country road trip and almost fell off in heavy traffic. Was a bad day. We swapped to this Tow Tuff TTF-2762KR Steel Cargo Carrier with Bike Rack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004RFKBEO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_-Om3AbN8AD422 saved a ton of money and now we have a hitch and haul for camping and such. Without bikes on it the doors easily open.

u/Mark_c_pugner · 2 pointsr/smallbusiness

Could be an option. You can have a hitch installed for about $200-300 I think. One option instead of a trailer could be a hitch cargo carrier. If it works that would solve the issue for well under $500.

A luggage rack + totes worked well for us with a minivan. We got some weather-proof totes and some straps and put all our clothes into those. It will create a lot more room for gear in the back of the van.

You have to remove the totes when you open the back hatch, but for the most part that's okay because you're only going back there to load in and out for the gig. When we stopped for meals left the vehicle for some reason, we just put the totes in the van and went about on our way.

Something like this:

We just ran a 2k mi. road trip through CO and UT and slept in the back for 11 days. We kept all our gear inside the vehicle while we were driving and once we set up camp transfered all the gear up into a waterproof soft box.

May not be the solution for you, but only took about 5 mins to pack up each night and way cheaper and more fuel efficient than a roof box. Plus it rolls up really small when not in use.

Receiver hitch from minimania.com . Rack is very basic, this one:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QEKGA0

I added most of the red retroreflective tape and replaced some of the bolts with stainless eyebolts from the hardware store.

The straps go to the two attachment rings at the front of the trunk, up and over the trunk lid where I've protected the paint with some helicopter tape.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O6BQMG

The instructions for the receiver hitch said not to attach a cantilevered load like this without reinforcing with straps.

I don't have this thing on very often, but we're going camping tonight and it will be a lot easier to pack this way. I'll probably just have the cooler on it.

u/mrbubbles916 · 2 pointsr/paramotor

You could just buy a Class 1 carrier that will natively fit a 1.25" receiver. Here is the one I bought.

u/unkodesu · 2 pointsr/4Runner

I did a lot of looking before I bought and after what I saw I decided I didn't want to spend a ton because I really don't need rack that can support a roof top tent and I dont want to start hacking factory parts off my new truck. So I found this very inexpensive happy alternative.

Here is the link to Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B013COCXDC/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It requires a bit of assembly and I added a few steps to ensure that for the most part its water/rust resistant, adhesive silicone to fill jointed pieces and lock tight for assembly screws. Added some flat black anti rust paint at places where it needed.

The mounting to my 5th gen took a bit of re-engineering. The brackets needed to be inverted to work with the stock cross bars. Once I did that it held very well and I can shake the whole truck by grabbing the rack.

The max weight limit is 250 lbs but I doubt I'll ever need that for my camping gear.

All in all I am very satisfied with my purchase and its 200 less than the cheapest high end one piece universal rack.

u/RealEzraGarrison · 2 pointsr/XVcrosstrek

Hitch basket, roof basket, roof crossbars, waterproof hitch basket bag, waterproof roof basket bag. Roof and hitch baskets are Curt, waterproof bag for the hitch basket is Curt, waterproof bag for the roof basket is Rocket Straps and roof rails are Brightlines. Got everything for less than the cost of the Thule roof basket I originally wanted and one Thule Aeroblade crossbar. Very happy with all of the purchases so far! Had the hitch on for a few days, only got the roof basket on today.

edit: crossbars, not rails.

u/TPrimeTommy · 2 pointsr/JeepRenegade

I have these bars on my Trailhawk (along with bike racks) and I have no complaints. I do get some wind noise at highway speeds, but I'm not sure if that's from the bike racks or the crossbars.

Installation was straightforward for just the crossbars, maybe 20 minutes, basic hand tools, and a step ladder.

u/ventitties · 2 pointsr/XVcrosstrek

Hey, I haven't purchased this one yet (saving up for it at the moment). But this is the one I will be buying very soon for my 2017.

It has got really positive reviews. As well, there's a handful of people who have mounted it on their Crosstrek and it fits perfectly. Good quality for the price--not as expensive as the bigger name brands.

I think that you will prefer doing two cars. It will give you more freedom at your stops if people want to do different things. Also, in my mind an RV is going to be a huge hassle, unless you are only camping or staying in the country.

As far as a rooftop carrier, you do not have to have a rack or buy a hardtop. It is cheaper and in some ways more convenient to buy a roof bag. We purchased this one on amazon last year and it worked great. When I bought it the price was $68 - it looks like it went up, so you could shop around for a cheaper one. The benefits of a roof bag are: 1) cheaper, 2) don't need a rack, and 3) you can easily take it off and store it in your vehicle with your luggage if needed during stops (discourage thieves if you are worried). We put ours through hell and it held up great.

For our trip, we only had about 16 and a half days, so two weeks plus the weekend. We had to stay on this schedule due to work/time-off - you could do a lot more than us with an extra week. You can buy any park passes at the park and I would just pay for tolls as you go. Unless there is a specific tour that you want to do which could sell out, most things you don't need to buy before hand.

It sounds like you guys are taking a very similar route to what we did - I have listed it below so you can get a feel what what is possible:

  • Day 1: left North Carolina Friday night after work, driving all night.

  • Day 2: Stopped in the morning at the St. Louis, MO, Arch. We only stopped to see the arch for about an hour and then kept driving. Arrived in Denver, CO at the end of the day, driving 28 hours straight if you don't count St. Louis.

  • Day 3: Left early and spent the day at Rocky Mountain National Park, CO. We left around 6PM to drive about 5 hours into Utah and spent the night at a motel.

  • Day 4: Drove all day and arrived in the West side of Yosemite National Park, CA late in the day.

  • Day 5: Spent the day in Yosemite National Park. We all loved Yosemite, probably my favorite national park.

  • Day 6: Left early in the morning and drove three or so hours to Napa Valley and did a vineyard tour. After that we visited Muir Woods (huge trees) and then drove into San Fransisco where we would spend the night.

  • Day 7: Spent the day in San Fransisco. We all love San Fransisco, it is one of my favorite cities - very unique.

  • Day 8: Left San Fransisco early to take the PCH (highway 1) down the coast to Los Angeles. It is about a 6 and 1/2 hour drive, so we made a day of it and stopped at Carmel Mission, Pfeiffer Beach (beautiful with purple sand), and Hearst Castle, then finally arrived at our hotel north of LA.

  • Day 9: Visited Hollywood and Santa Monica. Unfortunately, horrible traffic kept us from doing much more.

  • Day 10: Left our LA hotel early and drove to Las Vegas, arriving in the afternoon. Explored the city, ate at Bacchanal Buffet, and partied.

  • Day 11: Partied in Vegas.

  • Day 12: Drove to Phoenix, AZ.

  • Day 13: Made a day trip from Phoenix to northern AZ. Stopped in Sedona (Red Rock country like Road Runner in the Looney Toons and seriously awesome to see), then visited Walnut Canyon National Monument, and finally the Grand Canyon (which is an obvious must see). Then drove back to Phoenix.

  • Day 14: Drove around 25 hours through the night to Nashville, TN.

  • Day 15: Slept and relaxed, then explored Nashville a bit at night.

  • Day 16: Explored Nashville.

  • Day 17: Drove home.

    A few more things:

  • States like Nevada and Utah are VERY empty as far as other people. Do not let your vehicle's gas tank get below half way - in fact, I would fill at 3/4 of a tank. We had a close call because of this.

  • The Rockies and Yosemite have some very steep and narrow roads. This is particularly true if you go north of Yosemite (it is ridiculous) to get around the mountain range. Your vehicles are going to be under serious stress weighted down with 4-5 people and luggage. Bring a pre-deluded antifreeze bottle incase of over-heating. Be cautious about driving through these areas at night (it is pitch black).

  • Weather is different out West. We experienced a flash flood that nearly swept our vehicle away. Another time we had to reroute because of a wild fire.

  • Driving is not as boring as it seems. Despite all the driving, we loved watching the landscape change. Places in Nevada and Utah look unreal compared to NC.

  • The trip was not as draining as it sounds. For the most part we were full energy and ready to go, even in our final days -- when we got home, we all wished we could keep going. As I mentioned before, using minor sleep aids helps with this a lot. Make sure you rest in the car when it is not your turn to drive. Make sure that everyone is required to drive 3 hour shifts. If it is four people, that means you only have to drive 3 hours and then have a 9 hour break period. THAT SAID, I'm not familiar with your group and some people may not cope well in this sort of situation.

  • Sometimes the trip was uncomfortable or even scary (a few close calls), but it made the best memories. I have been to nice resorts, vacations, etc., but this trip is the one we talk about the most.

You're gonna be happy, this basket looks great on our car!

I got 46" CargoLoc crossbars. I already wouldn't recommend them, the channel on the bottom of the bar that lets you adjust their width whistles loud above 45mph. Solved it temporarily with some tape until I can get a fairing to go below the basket or an LED bar. Something to block the wind. I should've just spent the extra money to get the OEM aero bars.

Also something to note with this basket, the sides stick down ever so slightly below where the mounting hardware is. No problem, as this just means the weight of whatever is in the basket is sitting directly on my straight crossbars instead of on the plastic part of the mounting hardware, and it's still rock solid (I can rock the car hard with the basket with no wiggling). It's just kinda weird that it's gripping under the bar in the middle, and the top of the bar at the edges. It wouldn't do this with slightly curved bars like the OEM ones.

I’ve been using this one for several years. It’s been great. I have a 17 foot scanoe and I t’s plenty wide enough. I secure it with a couple ratchet straps and tie it up front through one of the tie down points. I’ve driven several hours with it up to about 80 mph.

roof rack

I was going to include a picture of the rack with my boat on it, but I can’t figure out how to do it.

u/mountain913 · 1 pointr/XVcrosstrek

I have the Thule 91725 flat top which I managed to carry 4 pairs of skis or 2 pairs of skis and 2 boards quite easily. Also if you are looking for crossbars, these ones do the job just fine.
CargoLoc Roof Top 2 PC. 47" Aluminum Cross Bars - Lockable https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00GA2HKAU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_fvIwDbYRS23H6

I also recommend a wind fairing as it gets noisy and degrades the MPG a bit.

u/keytarin · 1 pointr/subaru

It's made by Reese Explore. I like it, price was good and I haven't had any issues with rust at the seams that other brands have said they had.

Amazon link.

I know its been six days since your comment, but I just came across this sub. I go camping with my jeep all the time and use this hitch with this cargo bag. This is the only pic I could find of my jeep with the hitch while attached (with the bag only half full), but I must say its one of the best purchases Ive made.

u/shoppedpixels · 1 pointr/nashville

That's an interesting trade but unfortunately it's a no go (maybe a yard sale in the past?), this is the one we had though, looks like the rack option is in stock and they now make a smaller one (11 cu ft vs the 15 we had)

https://www.amazon.com/RoofBag-Explorer-Waterproof-Soft-Carrier/dp/B0042H6BA0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1467288683&sr=8-2&keywords=roof+top+bag

Looks like there's some cheaper options, I just know that's the one we had and it was heavy and durable, I'd definitely get or fashion an anti skid mat.

EDIT: On second thought, maybe this was outrs, they all look the sameish:

/u/alrashid2 no, I didn’t post about it here before but happy to weigh in.

It attaches to my stock rails and crossbars with 8 built in straps.

It packs down to about the size of a shoe box.

These are the cross beams:

CargoLoc 2-Piece 52" Aluminum... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GA2HKAU?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It’s an inexpensive set up, but I’m honestly very satisfied with the build quality. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive cross country with this set up.

u/Fat_Head_Carl · 1 pointr/CampingGear

Looks like it's going into a 1.25" receiver hitch, and it looks to be a fabricated "tray".

I used a larger commercially made one for years to haul my cooler when surf fishing.

u/torooyo · 1 pointr/crv

That's pretty much it. It has all the same dimensions and had capacity, just has a different sticker on the wind deflector as far as I can tell.

The one I have was like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FQT1FF4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sx7XAbN54SN32

I doubt there's really a difference between them though. If you want a really good one I would personally recommend Yakima or Thule brands, but they can be pretty expensive.

Thank you! It is the reese roof rack that they sell at walmart, it is the exact same as the highland basket on amazonhttps://www.amazon.com/Highland-1041900-U-Venture-Rooftop-Basket/dp/B007GMHTQ8/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1517982561&sr=8-9&keywords=cargo+basket it's just rebranded. I was reluctant to purchase at first but risked it since I could just return it to walmart if I didn't like it but I was really pleasantly surprised for $100 it is everything I need.

u/XcherokeeJ · 1 pointr/CherokeeXJ

Fair enough. I had a basket rack from Amazon similar to this. Just u-bolts down to factory rails if you have them.

u/robotzor · 1 pointr/teslamotors

It will also come with a hitch if you want a tongue-mounted luggage carrier like the linked one. A bit tacky but frees up your trunk for stuff you use on the road easily accessible while the destination luggage is tied down. The good thing with the 3 is you won't need to install one aftermarket.

Again not choice #1 but it's available and really expands cargo area.

u/atetuna · 1 pointr/ebikes

My concern was how you'd transport it because bike racks often have issues with fat tires and non standard wheelbases. It could be a problem if you take the bus or catch a ride with a friend. It bugs me because it means my hitch can only be used for my fat tire ebike, or for cargo, not both. If I had built my ebike around a conventional mtb, then I could use this thing. The two bikes you're looking at also look incompatible with most racks that attach to a hatch. If you're always riding, then it's not a problem.

From watching the lockinglawyer and bosnianbill, I'd go with a ulock like the Uguard Brute or Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit. Their advantage is a shackle thicker than bolt cutters can handle right now. Get insurance though. There's no 100% foolproof way to stop thieves, so prepare yourself so the impact of a theft can be dealt with when it happens. I keep seeing https://velosurance.com/ pop up when it comes to ebike insurance. You might have renters insurance or something like that, but chances are they are against insuring motorized vehicles, which includes ebikes.

u/slapheadsrnice · 1 pointr/SubaruForester

I have this one in my wish list on Amazon, good ratings and cheaper than most.

u/boogieman67 · 1 pointr/SubaruForester

I have a Reese basket. I’ve seen a lot of other guys run them. Pretty basic and cheap. Little bit of rust water from the inside of the tubes, but no external rust and has held up for 4 years now. Reese Basket

I bought these bars for my 2018 based on feedback from the Crosstrek forums. Cheap and work great. There is a channel on the bottom that can be is noisy at high speeds but an easy fix, just put some aluminum tape over it. https://www.amazon.ca/CargoLoc-Roof-Aluminum-Cross-Bars/dp/B00GA2HKAU

I don't recommend them though. They whistle like crazy. The culprit is the track along the bottom where the mounts slide back and forth to make them universal. I covered them with duct tape to fix it and now the noise is gone but it looks like crap

u/Kloodist · 1 pointr/CherokeeXJ

I have 3 sets of these Proline gutter mount cross bars and then this roof basket from Amazon. There are a lot of similar options for roof baskets on amazon and there are probably better/cheaper options since I bought that 4 years ago.

Well water got in the screw holes to rust it, but that could happen with any rack really. Make sure you cover up the screw holes with something! Also make sure the cage you buy isn't too big for the car...I see some giant ass cages on small frame cars and it looks goofy as fuck.

Something like this

Easy to load everything on and off

Here's another game-changer, a soft-sided rooftop cargo carrier. I got mine for about $39 "used", and as far as I can tell it wasn't actually used, just repackaged. If you intend on purchasing this make sure you use a liquid silicone on the screws when you put it together to avoid water getting into it and causing rust from the inside. http://www.autozone.com/sealants-glues-adhesives-and-tape/sealant/permatex-3-oz-tube-black-silicone-adhesive-sealant/526731_0_0

I've got budget crossbars and budget j-racks from amazon. The crossbars are CargoLoc, and they have a decent set of reviews on Amazon. They fit nicely. I'm not sure I 100% trust the locking mechanism that clamps the bars to the rails, so I tie them off to the roof rails to be sure. The bars themselves are extruded aluminum and are fine. If you tie a loop of good rope around the rails as a backup, well, that's not that different from the plastic strap that holds expensive Timberline towers onto the rails. The kayak racks are kayak racks. They're just metal bars and some bolts and plates that hold the racks to the crossbars. The ones I got are budget, but they also have very good reviews from users. They're functionally identical to more expensive racks.

I know some will disagree, and I probably would, too, if I used them more regularly. The CargoLocs certainly are not pretty.
