This is going to sound a little funny, but have you considered a walkie-talkie set up?
Something kid-themed like Batman or Ninja Turtles or something. You have one and he has the other. When he's up, he tells you he's up (without having to yell) and you tell him he can get up. You can even use fun code words and spy names to make it fun for him, even say goodnight over the walkies if you're so inclined (after you do whatever bedtime routine you have).
It'll help him communicate with you guys without him having to scream and wake up his sibling.

You can't use 3 C batteries in a SledgeFire and expect it to work. You need 3 expired 9 volts at the least. Also, nice motors, but you need a new cage with new flywheels to really get good performance. You need to connect it to the main outputs, not the balance plugs. You can wire it directly to a pair of banana plugs, or a Deans plug if your charger came with the banana-to-deans cord that every other cord plugs into. You can use a 2S balance lead for the other end, (you can get rid of the center wire, you won't need it) or buy some JST-XH plugs and crimp up your own. (You can use pliers, but you really want to get a proper crimping tool for those.) If you wire it backwards, the charger will give you an error message, so it's not the end of the world if you get it wrong, just swap them. As I recall, NiMH packs are supposed to be charged slowly, 0.3C or so, but you should double check me on that, I've never manually charged one before.

On FRS you can use up to 2 watts on 1-7 or 15-22. The middle 8-14 are limited to .5 watts. I don't know that specific model so I don't know if it has the type 95 sticker on it. You can try looking it up on the FCC site but since there are so many rebrands sometimes that it tough. In theory that would work as long as you either kept power to .5 watts and only turned up to 1 watt on 1-7 or 15-22.
These are what I bought to play Walkie Talkie with the kids. They want to play with my Ham radio and that's not going to work. But these Baofeng are .5 watt FRS so fine for us to use on any channel (you just lose the overall range).
And these are in the local Target. I could pick them up whenever. I'm not sure of their specs but I'm guessing they are .5 watt as well.
It's worth noting that the FCC changed the regulations late last year to simplify the FRS/GMRS split. Basically you can use FRS radios on all channels now, but are power limited. You can't have a removable antenna or use repeaters without a GMRS license but you don't need that on the ship. So you'll find many "walkie-talkies" are low power. I'd like to a find a new FRS radio which was 2 watts on 1-7, .5 on 8-14, and 2 again on 15-22 but I don't think they exist yet.
Got these for my 6 year old girl and my 8 year old boy had some fun with them
I just picked up THIS Anker 10,000 mAh portable pack. I was going to go with a 20,000 mAh. However it being big was one thing since I would want to carry it around for Pokémon GO. Plus the 10,000 is one of the few with QC2 charging. It's much faster than the base charging. Few phones have QC2 but my Note 5 does. So I'd rather it charge faster maybe 3 times. Then have to wait for it to charge roughly 6 times. As the Note 5 has a 3,000 mAh battery.
