My girlfriend and I make tamago gohan all the time. It's probably our single most frugal meal.

1 cup uncooked rice [$0.42] (Calrose or Jasmine for best results)

2 large eggs [$0.22]

½ tsp grated ginger [$0.19] (a dash of ginger powder also works)

2-3 tbsp sweet soy sauce [$0.18 - $0.27] (just add a splash of mirin or sugar to normal soy sauce if you don't have sweet soy)

(Optional toppings)

Chives

Green Onions

Furikake

Cook the rice in unsalted water. When the rice has finished cooking mix in the ginger and soy sauce. Separate it into two bowls. Fry the eggs sunny side up, then place one on each bowl. If you want to add anything extra, like the chives, green onions, or furikake, do that now.

Sticking to just the base ingredients lands us at right around $1.10 to feed the both of us. We normally do end up adding something though. I do chives; she adds green onion; and we both add furikake. All in all, this meal costs us probably $1.50 total, so $0.75 per serving? Pair it with a small glass of apple or orange juice, and it makes one heck of a breakfast. Toss in some chicken, and you've got a lunch or a dinner.

So I had some killer orange Nairagi that I got for dinner and had about 1oz leftover and some left over Knorr rice. Sprinkled in some Wasabi Furikake and dipped in some Chili Ponzu. Surprisingly tasty.

I have no shame

Where I work we use powdered wasabi. That stuff is cheap.

There are lots of other different types of Japanese rice toppings depending on what you like. In addition to different flavors of Furikake there's also Shichimi and Gomashio, all fantastic on rice.

What part of China are you going to? I was able to navigate months in Beijing but I did have to avoid traditional Chinese food. There are enough steak and sushi places that I was able to do ok. (FYI I carry around freeze dried wasabi and coconut aminos packets)

I'm even more of a challenge than AIP since I cant do FODMAPs either. But when I go out I usually order something simple. Like fish/chicken/steak prepared with olive oil + salt on lettuce. I find that easier and more fool proof than passing an allergies card along to the waiter & chef. But we each have our own risk/reward trade off to make.

There is a product called "furikake" that you can find at any asian market, and some major grocery stores. There are many flavors, but the best (to me) is the Wasabi Fumi Furikake [http://www.amazon.com/JFC-Wasabi-Fumi-Furikake-Seasoning/dp/B0006G5KEE] SERIOUSLY! I am in college, and this makes eating breakfast or lunch awesome and dirt cheap.

YOU PUT IT ON RICE AND SUDDENLY IT TASTES FUCKING AMAZING

https://www.sbfoods.co.jp/products/catalog/products_detail.php?GDSCODE=86224 is horseradish and coloring. AFAIK this is the most common wasabi powder.

There is also:
http://www.amazon.com/Sushi-Sonic-Powdered-Wasabi-Ounce/dp/B0048KIQ90/ and
http://www.thespicehouse.com/spices/wasabi-powder
but those are still blends of wasabi and horseradish.

I'm not familiar with any commercially available powdered wasabi that is just wasabi. Do you have any links to the product you mean?

Interesting. Looked it up, it's supposed to be 46% wasabi, blended with horseradish, etc. Since it's not cut fresh, it also won't taste the same - but I wonder how different this is from the horseradish only version...?
