Metal rings that you can string the bobbins for a work in progress on. DMC sells them (Michaels carries them) but they are marked up somewhat excessively. Search on Amazon for a better deal or, I picked up 10 at TJ Maxx that were on a metal hanger and billed as "scarf hangers/storage system."

Your idea might work, but I would be concerned about the blackout curtains being much heavier than the sheer curtains. That might pull a bit on the lighter fabric.

This doesn't exactly answer your question, but have you considered layering the 2 curtains? Either on 2 separate rods or both sets on the same rod (sheer on the inside and blackout on the outside like this: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/9c/36/34/9c36341efed7189ef060637badc2afce.jpg). Sheer curtains are so pretty, and if you do end up lining them, it's going to look much heavier.

Or you could purchase clip rings and simply double up the sheer and blackout curtains. https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Curtain-Clip-Rings-Nickel/dp/B01N5B2MKA

Please disregard these suggestions if they doesn't work for your situation!

It could still be done! You’d have to rip off one side of your binding though.

Honestly, this is a fantastic gift and she’s going to love it regardless. Maybe you could purchase some of these to go with it instead?

I’ve used these to hang a quilt before.

Not entering, but I still want to put my two cents in for how I'd love to see you redecorate the room, 'cause I'm bossy like that. ;)

So, for the color scheme I think you should go with a medium gray and have an accent wall (the one with the window) in chartreuse. Don't panic! haha. Chartreuse is simply a lime green (green with yellow undertones) that would pop really well against the gray.

You for sure need to ditch those fussy traverse drapes and go with a simple rod pocket curtain or panels with clip-on rings, ideally with a box cornice at the top. Here are two examples of padded, fabric covered box cornices. They're really simple to make.

These are the fabrics I like best for the window treatment, and paint samples for the walls.

I could then make you a lumbar pillow using each of the two fabrics you choose for the curtains and valance. Finally, you could do a lampshade in the same material used for the valance/cornice to tie it all together.

Happy re-decorating!

morgik might be expensive but this is just an example,
rings with eyelets,

this looks like a cheaper alternative just make sure they are slightly bigger then your rod.

and then get these pinch pleat hooks and stick the needle in the back of the pleat and the other end through the eyelet and it should hold.

i work in drapery/upholstery these metal pinch pleat hooks is generally what we use for pinch pleat on rings with eyelets.

I vote curtain clips. Inexpensive, non-damaging, variety of colours. It's not an invisible setup or mount, but it has a nice aesthetic, and makes the display look entirely intentional. I think often an invisible 3M type solution can give the impression the display is only intended to be temporary.
