Amazon has plenty to choose from. They come pre-charred. When you get it, first you must fill it with water and let it sit so all the staves seal properly. When draining, this also helps remove loose char.

The first thing you age always takes the shortest amount of time as the char is fresh. Each subsequent batch takes a bit longer. The median amount of time is usually 4 weeks or so for a good age. And after each batch, the next batch not only takes the flavor of the wood, but also the previous spirits that seep into the barrel. (My wife and I learned the hard way when we aged gin and then aged tequila. We ended up with gin flavored aged tequila!)

One of my favorite combos is to age Manhattans and then age bourbon or rye alone and it takes on some of the flavor of the Manhattan.

Here's one example, but plenty available for better price probably: https://www.amazon.com/Liter-Golden-Oak-Barrel-Guarantee/dp/B01HMXFMXC

This is what I used. The first barrel they sent me didn't seal so they sent me another free of charge and that worked great.

Thanks! I just got this. It will be here Monday and I am stoked about trying this out and sharing with my family in a month for American Thanksgiving. Cheers!

This was a great write up thank you.

I've had pretty good luck using charred oak chips but I had wanted to try barrel aging.

I ended up buying a 5 liter (1.32 gallon) barrel off of Amazon. Barrel

This is not a paid endorsement for this particular barrel just wanted to share it. It came with a great set of instructions on how to prepare it for spirits.

I will add that I ordered the barrel from them "unfinished" meaning they didn't shellac it as I didn't want that weeping into my spirits.

Branded barrel

Had I known about the method you linked I probably would have tried that instead of buying one.

I may make one so I can have a side by side comparison. I'm about a month or so into aging. No real game plan on how long I was going to leave it in there either.

Right now it's filled to the brim with 150 proof "Pennsylvania Rye"

Honestly, it really depends on the person and how deep they are into it. Some other ideas off the top of my head - a barrel for aging like this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01HHK5MMQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmr2_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1510694669&sr=8-1-fkmr2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=1+liter+wooden+barrel was a pretty fun gift I got last year.

A seamless or seamed Yarai (depending on your price range) is nice, if not necessarily the most practical accessory. Some people enjoy making crushed ice with a Lewis bag and wooden mallet. Hope these ideas help.

If you’re really in doubt, you can always buy a nice bottle of bourbon. Pretty much everyone likes those, even if they don’t do much mixing with them.

I bought one earlier this year. Here's the Amazon link if you're so interested. Their barrels come with a bung, a spigot (already attached) and a stand. I bought a 1 liter barrel because I didn't want to spend an enormous amount of money filling it. It was good quality and I'd buy from them again.

There are dozens of them. spirals really are a better choice price wise and for ease of use, but there is a certain aesthetic to a barrel.

Looks like Amazon has many options.

I imagine he used ~1/3 of the barrel volume for each ingredient. Barrel volume linked is 2 L, so probably ~600 mL each.
