This is what I wrote to another user the other day regarding the chrome strips on the early 5th Gen SR5:
I actually just did the full chrome delete this past weekend. I originally only had the emblems.
So there are two schools of thought or process, perhaps three.
One, paint - plasti-dip or paint. Two, Vinyl wrap. Three, overlays.
I went the first route as it was cheaper. I used Rustoleum Peel Coat but there are others. Step 1, clean the surface. Might as well clean the whole car. My neighbor who is a car dude says a nice wipe alcohol after a clay bar will make sure its not only debris free but perfect for the plastic paint to adhere to. Step 2, Tape, tape, tape. Using blue tape you want to cut in under the door handles and where the chrome pieces "hang" over the painted areas. For the large emblem on the trunk I actually taped far away and let the paint overspray and then just rubbed the plastic off up to the emblem. Step 3, after you tape a gorgeous amount, add on plastic or cardboard or whatever barriers to protect from overspray all over your doors and trunk, etc. A quick way for the front is to insert newspaper behind the grill and actually paint the grill black too... it won't hurt it, hell, maybe even give it a boost. Step 4, start nice and slow with a good distance (6-12" freedom units) away with very light coats. I think I ended up with 6 coats on most areas and 8 or 9 on the handles due to the constant handling of myself and my radical children. Make sure to hit it from different angles to get good coverage. Step 5, peel away slowly and if you want to be super careful you can use a small exacto knife to cut under edges but it must be a new blade to actually slice the plastic otherwise it will stretch it, likely peeling it off. I recommend plastic snap off knives because metal can scratch versus plastic which is less likely link here. This is where the distance comes in with the pre-taping and you can just rub it off the paint instead...this video is a good example. Step 6, take pics and show me how it turned out!
Option 2, I suck at Vinyl wrap, I did it on the handles of my Highlander and it was so hard to do that I decided not to do that for the 4runner. If you go this route the get 3M vinyl wrap and watch YouTube for hours.
Option 3, Door Handles and emblems but there isn't much for the chrome stripe on each bumper or even the surround on the fog light.
Hope this helped and I'm sure it will look leagues better after the fake chrome is deleted...!
Cheers.

Please note, yes, it does get dirty, it can chip/peel off, reapply is likely, yada yada yada. However, until you decide what you major moves will be, its an afternoon project that provides a big appearance change. So, up to you...
Yup. I've had it on since around Christmas. Love it so far...here's my few gripes.
Otherwise, I have no issues or regrets whatsoever. Very happy camper. Obviously, YMMV with CarPlay, but I think you'll be just as happy.
Finished Product
Here are the parts I ordered (aside from the unit itself)
Correct, you don't want gas in the vehicle. If you are looking for something easy you could get a hitch-mounted cargo tray. It will limit your off-road clearance (specifically your departure angle) but if you are just talking about camping/overlanding and not hard-core rock climbing it would probably be OK.
EDIT: I also have to add... I know a lot of people think carrying around extra gas cans looks badass but for most people it's really unnecessary. With a little bit of planning, the
2523-gallon tank built in is enough for almost anything. Not saying you shouldn't do it, but there are definitely costs associated with the hardware required. Plus it's also a bit of a safety hazard... if you get rear-ended or back into a tree, there's a good chance those tanks will puncture and make the situation a lot worse. Its from amazon. I saw a guy in a parking lot with a sweet 3rd gen. He had this basket. He said it was sold on amazon as a "Bison Roof Basket". When i searched for it I found that they changed ownership or names etc, and now operate under "Arkensen roof basket". Its a 3 piece and really well put together. Also really fits the size of the roof proportionally as well
here is the link.
Very solid buy and also qualifies for amazon prime which is nice :)
I have a 2016 base model SR5 and first i installed the TRD Cold Air Intake and with just the intake i felt like i could feel the difference in power, you can definitely hear the difference from the stock intake to the TRD CIA.
Its supposed to give you better MPG but because of the sound it makes when you really step on it you wanna floor it all the time so my MPG went down lol.
Then i got the Borla Catback exhaust and honestly its only a little bit louder then stock but you can hear the difference and it did add a little more power i feel. I researched on some different forums before i got it and it seems like a good amount of people preferred the Borla over other brands.
Supposedly if you do those two mods together it can add anywhere from 5-20 Horsepower. For both mods it set me back about 1000 dollars. Heres the links to wear i got them.

And yes, those bulbs are only $8 a piece, and they produce 75% more lumens than your standard H11 bulbs you have. Saves you a shitton of money over LED "upgrades" and helps you see better. Done.
https://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/150621-how-headlight-bulb-conversion-h11-h9-9005-9011-a.html
I've been there, done that with regard to LED bulbs when I was younger. Wasted literally $100s. Got absolutely no improvement. Went back to standard halogens and have been happier ever since. Became an engineer and learned why my "upgrades" weren't really upgrades at all.
Bought some nfab nerf bars on amazon two years ago. They arent anything special but they have held up well and the price was right. I have been happy with them but will go with a rock slider when i replace.

This is what I used. Definitely worth the money to not have to worry about taking off the emblems. Very easy to install.

I've got some pics
Factory 265/60-18 w/Daystar 2.5"/1.5 spacer lift
Same lift above with 265/65-18 AT3s
5100s, OME 885/895 springs, Camburg style UCAs, 1.5" wheel spacers
Last pic is a total lift of over 5" with well over $1000 invested. I'll be jumping up to 275/65-18s once these tires wear down.
The Daystar spacer lift was less than $125 on Amazon and can be installed by anyone with simple tools and jacks. In fact, I've still got my Daystar spacer lift kit boxed up in my shop - I could sell it to you on a DEEP discount. The spacer lift served me VERY well for a few thousand miles until I upgraded.
My advice- get the spacer lift and drive the snot out of it. Its an extremely capable 4wd, if you understand how the ATRAC system works.
ETA: my MPG with the spacer lift was not affected- 19 city/24 highway/21 average. After adding the slightly larger tires, winch, winch mounting plate, all suspension mods, K&N filter, HCF delete, I'm still 15 city/22-24 highway/18 average.

Also didn’t use stencils. Look up on YouTube how to do it. Pretty easy!
Thanks! Hilux 167 snorkel, yes it is plumbed in and the air box is sealed. Great value, but a PIA to install.
T4R dot org was my guiding source on this exact same mod; there are a few threads on there that are worth reading (use the sidebar 4Runner Resource Guide here to find your way).
I went with H11 LED Morimoto 2Stroke 2.0s for the low beams, CougarMotor LED 9005s for the high beams, and Alla H16 LEDs for the fogs. Finished the complete install in 30-45 minutes this weekend (fogs took the most time and effort; plenty of install vids for all bulbs on the Tube/internets). My dad loves the output on everything so much that he's looking to switch all his Highlander lights over.
Can't speak to the colored lights or film for anything, and I've noticed a slight flicker in the DRLs but nothing that dissuades me from using them (and they don't appear to operate like reports from others about LED/HID DRLs functioning at high beam power).
I did a lot of looking before I bought and after what I saw I decided I didn't want to spend a ton because I really don't need rack that can support a roof top tent and I dont want to start hacking factory parts off my new truck. So I found this very inexpensive happy alternative.
Here is the link to Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B013COCXDC/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It requires a bit of assembly and I added a few steps to ensure that for the most part its water/rust resistant, adhesive silicone to fill jointed pieces and lock tight for assembly screws. Added some flat black anti rust paint at places where it needed.
The mounting to my 5th gen took a bit of re-engineering. The brackets needed to be inverted to work with the stock cross bars. Once I did that it held very well and I can shake the whole truck by grabbing the rack.
The max weight limit is 250 lbs but I doubt I'll ever need that for my camping gear.
All in all I am very satisfied with my purchase and its 200 less than the cheapest high end one piece universal rack.
I can’t take credit, this was all my Fiancé’s work - this truck is his long term project haha. He got an overlay kit on Amazon
Did you know Amazon will donate a portion of every purchase if you shop by going to smile.amazon.com instead? Over $50,000,000 has been raised for charity - all you need to do is change the URL!

> What HID kit is that, and how easy/hard was the install?
It was a morimoto kit. Square D2.S model
It wasn't difficult. Just laborious.
Steps I took:
This took me 3 months to get done, mistakes inclusive. Because I live a VERY busy lifestyle. You could do it with my advice in two weeks and one dedicated day, shipping time included.
I got these (link below). They're OEM sans chrome and work great for me and the other 5'3" members of my family/friends. Sturdy, no rust issues so far (from the chicago winters).

Update: I've decided to just replace the housing and buy some good LED/HID lamps. link!
I took my 2015 rails off 2 weeks ago, laid them out and just put a few coats of "Plastidip" on them. They look much better.

I did a Sony XAV-AX100 + Scosche kit + Metra harness + Metra antenna adapter + another adapter + Metra ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Controls + backup camera.
To be clear, it was kinda a bitch to get it all installed and working but 100% worth it now. Shoutout to /u/bon_temps for the camera link and advice, looks completely factory once installed.
You can also buy overlays, but I think they look chunky. And if you are going to dip the bumpers, might as well do the emblems while you are at it.

Woah that is cool. I was trying to get my tranny temp too, and bought one of those OBD readers (this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NLQAHS/). Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for Tranny temp... is there any way I could combine your code info with this thing to make it work?

The template isnt perfect because its for a hilux but you can make it work. Here is a T4R install guide.
You can do a taco snorkel too but you have to swap from a powered antenna and add a intake piece from the taco behind the fender. Here is that install guide.

It is just the shell, so you swap the guts and no programming is needed. I've done this twice and it takes about 5 minutes.
