I actually just got this from Amazon on Wednesday, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K768DHY/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00K768DHY&linkCode=as2&tag=rutgpacal-20&linkId=75NXKNY6KJIO3TPA . It works pretty decent on the ADT-1 except for the airmouse not being able to be fully disabled (or I haven't figured a way to do it). It seems that when it gets enabled and your on Leanback you have to disable it (just pressing the button).

Nonetheless it almost fits all your criteria.

My first recommendation is do not program the POWER button on the remote (if you leave it unprogrammed it can actually put your ADT-1 to sleep and wake [unfortunately I programmed it and now I cannot seem to get it to do that for the ADT-1]).

Secondly, I'd use the bottom 4 bottoms to control the TV usage. I programmed the bottom RED Button to turn TV on/off (via IR learning on the remote). Then I used the Blue and Yellow for Volume Control (again via IR Learning). I programmed the Blue to just change the input on my TV.

Ironically I think there is some sort of MIC on the device, but it does not seem to do anything (at least not on the ADT-1. I tried manually going to VOICE talking while it was listening and nothing.

It obviously has a keyboard, it is just fine for it's size.

I do use the number pad in the front with the HDHomerun TV input and that works too to change the channels!

Also if you use a keyboard remapper (I used https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=innerlife.keyboard.multilanguagekeymapredefiner) you can program a few of the keys to load certain applications. For example the little icon with the movie clapperboard actually with load up Google Music. So I decided to program a few of the buttons (the 4 squares) to load the tvinput, so it goes directly to that. I also programed the magnifying glass (to load Kodi). I say you can do this as some of the buttons will not do anything on ATV, so it's nice to make a few shortcuts to frequently used applications.

So overall I think it is actually a great choice for the ADT-1. I just wish that A) I didn't program that power button on the top to IR since it was nice to actually make the ADT-1 go to sleep (plus when I long pressed it, I had the option to actually shutdown). B) The Air mouse not being able to be permanently disabled (This being the biggest grippe).

Pro tip 1#...

Order a 128gb SD card to go with it

I just ordered one it should be here tomorrow I'll let you know how it works out

But for the price it's the best one out there plus it's small.

Has a 150mbps wright speed pretty good and is USB 3.0

SanDisk Ultra Fit 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (SDCZ43-128G-GAM46) [Newest Version] https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BGTG2A0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_CLV-zbFY7RNTE

Pro tip 2#...
Buy the one for $ 170 with only remote... From Amazon or Best buy if they have it for $170

If you want the controller I would order the $199 witch includes the controller because if you order the controller septate you might end up paying all together at 60$ for the controller. Better to bungle ..

u/LordCryofax · 3 pointsr/AndroidTV

Yes the Shield is by far the best Android TV box (though I have a MiBox as well and it's decent)

The Shield comes with a little remote in addition to the gamepad. I tried several replacement remotes and this one was by far the best one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077XX6488/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has several ways to support Live TV. HDHomerun with antenna for free OTA, or streaming services such as DirecTVNow, YouTubeTV, PSVue.

Android TV very good setup and will fit your budget read the reviews from the buyers that's only opinion that matter from people that actually own these products.

Really happy with this, personally. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015O5UM6M

My first "air mouse" and they work a lot better than I thought they would.

For some reason all remotes that have air mouse ability seem to use a tiny 2.4ghz wireless receiver that takes up a USB slot instead of using bluetooth, so I also bought a 4 port USB 3.0 hub for like 8 dollars that I'm pretty happy with too.

u/sikilikis · 2 pointsr/AndroidTV

I use this one for my shield: https://www.amazon.com/Aerb-Wireless-Keyboard-Multifunctional-3-Gsensor/dp/B00K768DHY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1468592272&sr=8-2&keywords=minix+a2 (it runs on two AAA batteries and has IR learning).

It's not perfect. Almost everything works out of the box except for the back button, which apparently is read as a right mouse click instead. The ESC key on the back sort of works as a back button but its wonkey. I had to download a key remapping app to make the ESC key the back button. The keyboard is also super wonky but maybe I just got a bad one. In my case, it will either work perfectly fine, or the keys are suddenly remapped to something ridiculous (the r key becomes a volume key or the i key becomes the back button or something stupid like that). The air mouse works extremely well and is great if you plan on side loading apps.

Again, I think I may have just gotten a defective one because the keyboard issue I mentioned also happened on an mxiii box I used to have (the back button worked perfectly fine on that though). I might look into some of the other ones mentioned in this thread as a replacement.

Not cheap, but the Logitech Harmony Home companion should work well. Logitech Harmony Companion All in One Remote Control for Smart Home and Entertainment Devices, works with Alexa https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N3RFC4G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_.vhAybCVYG7EV It should be able to pair via Bluetooth to the mi box and control the TV via IR.

u/thendawg · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

I use this setup with my Shield (although mine is the one model older, no real functional difference). It will connect with (afaik) every android tv device using bluetooth then has a built in ir blaster, plus a second remote IR blaster for controlling TV, home theater, etc.

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Control-Smartphone-Simple/dp/B00BQ5RYI4

All communication is RF based to the hub so no line of site needed. The incl remote uses bluetooth or you can use the smartphone app anywhere on the same wifi network. My fave part is the remote customization, you can literally map any button on the remote to any function on any device you want using the app to set it up, as well as having 3 unique profiles on the remote for different activities. You can even set buttons to run a sequence of commands - for instance DirectTV Now Guide can be accessed with a series of keypresses in the android app, but no hotkey, I setup this sequence and assigned it to the Guide key so when in the app my wife can hit this key and the guide pops up! (Did the same for DVR page in the DTV Now app)

Maybe this is a little much for all you need? But the nice part is, it should work with anything you pickup down the road. Logitech has been pretty good at providing updates for the Harmony lineup to support new bluetooth devices. All in all, I felt it was a steal for $55 (what I paid for it about 6 mo ago)

u/RichA5 · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

I purchased this USB 3.0 hub when I first got the Mibox a few months ago and it is working great.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LLUEJFU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I still have an issue with certain types of videos, I got a free Vudu movie (Tmo Tuesdays last week) I chose the HDX version and even though I was wired, it was pixelating every 5 seconds, tried casting it, same issue. Since I got the HDX version I was able to choose the SD version as , I had to do this via the app on my Android phone and cast it and it worked great. Only issue so far.

Minix Neo A2 Lite is about as good as it gets, not backlit but just an awesome remote.

https://www.amazon.com/MINIX-Control-Wireless-Keyboard-Gyroscope/dp/B0769HF18C

I also have this remote which is good as well, it is half the price and backlit.

I was looking into USB 3.0 flash drives, the speeds are a bit better than microSD and the prices are pretty good, too.

The 128GB Sandisk Ultra Fit costs $35.39 and it'd fit nice and snug in the back of the Shield TV. Then there's the 128GB Lexar Jumpdrive P20 for $59.95 and pushes 350+ MB/s sequential reads. The biggest knock on it is that it's uncomfortable to slide open and retract, which shouldn't be a problem if I'm plugging it into the Shield TV and then leaving it alone.

u/firsthour · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

I have a great router and my parents have (now had) an older B/G one, I had to buy them an ethernet adapter for their Mii Box to stream higher bitrate mkvs (real nice 1080p encodes) locally over their network. Mine works just fine wirelessly. I recently upgraded their router to the same one I have (Asus RT-AC68U) and the same mkvs stream perfectly now. I did forget to unplug the network adapter though so that was still over wired.

Here's the one I bought them:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019GLIJ0Q

u/coledeb · 2 pointsr/AndroidTV

Not a problem. I will say I haven't pushed it to the very edge of what it claims in terms of support for 4k super ultra mega UHD dolby whatever, so bear in mind I can't really speak for that. But I think you'll do well with the mi box. If you want ethernet, I bought a UGreen USB 3.0 Hub that includes an RJ45 jack, and it works well.

u/WiSeIVIaN · -1 pointsr/AndroidTV

Thank you for the reply. I have the following usb air mouse which works great in Android tv and in the app, except it doesn't work to click on this button which was designed for a touch screen press...

When I had a MiBox I bought this one
https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Network-Adapter-Ethernet-1000Mbps/dp/B00LLUEJFU

Worked great and is external powered (not required for just Ethernet) so the USB hub will work great too.

u/neilenore · 12 pointsr/AndroidTV

Mi Box S is the next and cheaper alternative for Android TV. It has 4K and HDR but no ethernet adaptor, you should be able to add one by getting an ethernet adapter (Ugreen brand works perfectly for Mi Box users):

You should be able to get one on Amazon

Ethernet Only ($13)

Ethernet w/ USB 3.0 ($20)

If you will be mostly streaming or watching you should be fine with a Mi Box.

u/droopyoctopus · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

The reason I needed to use a usb dongle is because I am buying an air remote mouse(https://www.amazon.com/Aerb-Wireless-Keyboard-Multifunctional-3-Gsensor/dp/B00K768DHY/) and it has its own bluetooth dongle to work.

That is nice, I am also planning to do the same because I have Buffalo Snes USB controller. I am planning to install retroarch in it :)
So will a USB hub like this suffice?(https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-4-Port-Individual-Switches-HB-UMLS/dp/B00BWF5U0M/)

And also I have one last question. Is it normal to lag on 60fps videos on Youtube? I thought this box is strong enough to handle 4k 60 fps o.o

u/grudolf · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

Harmony Companion (US / [EU] (https://www.amazon.de/Logitech-2015-Harmony-Companion-Fernbedienung-Schwarz/dp/B014GXQ3S4/)) should be fine, check the Shield setup guide. You can program 6 most used activities to remote buttons (3 + 3 with longpress) with others available in mobile app which is also used for setup and configuration. The hub supports max. 8 devices which should be enough for most use cases.

Minuses:

  • smart home (=orange) buttons can't be remapped to regular activities/devices
  • buttons aren't backlit

I have a couple things going for me. My TV has a built in digital tuner and I live in a major city with access to over 50 OTA channels (most of them crap admittedly).

Up until a couple years ago, you could take for granted that any TV you bought would come with a digital tuner built-in. It's become less common now on newer TVs since eliminating it is a cost cutting measure and OTA just isn't that popular.

However, if you check your TV and it had a coaxial digital antenna input, then all you need is one of these antennas:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00IF70T4M/

If you don't, then you will also need a tuner box that outputs HDMI or whatever:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01BO61CMS/

If you want to watch/record to your computer rather than watching on your TV, than you need a TV tuner for your computer:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015IL0FIW/

As I mentioned before, I live in an area where I can get dozens of channels over the air, including Fox. My parents on the other hand live in the middle of nowhere and can get maybe two OTA channels, neither of which are Fox. Watching the Super Bowl OTA is not an option for them and many other people. I would recommend punching your street into this site to get a rough idea of what channels will be available to you:

u/FlickFreak · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

Mi Box and Shield TV both support HD Audio passthrough in Kodi or the Fire TV Stick 4K supports decoding of TrueHD or DTS-HD MA to 8-Channel PCM (no Atmos or DTS-X support though).

u/neogrinch · 2 pointsr/AndroidTV

Yes it works on the Mi Box, just as well as the Nexus Player. BUT like the other person said, Keep in mind there are a couple of apps it doesn't work correctly in for some reason, one of those Being HBO. When you click the center button to hit enter, it doesn't register. It works fine on most apps, so I don't know why it doesn't it in HBO. Also, if you have the remote with voice, the voice part of it does not work. This is the one I have:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LORGAG6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/Mr_You · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

Tablo DROID and Tablo Tuner have been mentioned specifically for the Nvidia Shield. Would be nice if they support the Mi Box when it's finally released. Note the USB tuner is the same as this Hauppauge so it may be supported by multiple apps including Live Channels.

u/DiDgr8 · 2 pointsr/AndroidTV

I'm very happy with the Harmony Hub and Companion Remote on my Sony XBR-55x700D. I'm not sure if it's using BT or WiFi since I've got a BT dongle plugged into one of the USB ports for a keyboard. I'm not using IR. The companion remote talks to the Hub by BT and the Hub sends all the commands over BT or WiFi (it also has an optional IR emitter that I'm not using).

It's much better than the Sony Remote and I can control my TiVo, Roku, Sony BluRay, and Vizio soundbar. Finally just one remote to rule them all!

u/tb21666 · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

Get a Mi Box, unless you want to Gamestream than get a Shield/Shield Pro.

You get what you pay for in the end; I have both a Mi Box which is a 'Bedroom Box' for media & the Shield Pro in my Theater for Media & Gamestream access, they're both great for their intended functionality with the use of 3rd party remotes IME.

u/UCBeef · 2 pointsr/AndroidTV

I would recommend a USB Ethernet Hub. I am using this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019GLIJ0Q/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and works great. You can keep your roms on your flash drive and have your game pad connected. Not to mentiong the ethernet port will make your connection more reliable. If you are set on moving your roms to the internal storage you could try ES Explorer and copy them over from USB.

u/Max_Roc · 2 pointsr/AndroidTV

Use openvpn for android thats what i use, you don't even need to sideload it it's compatible via google play. Just set it up and you're off to the races. This is also a great addition to the mi box's remote if you need a mouse and keyboard.

u/Kalzenith · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

I rather like this one. 99% of the time the d-pad is all you need, but the built in keyboard and air mouse functionality are really useful.

You should be able to stream 4K even on 50 mbps speed but if you still want improved speed then you may TRY (i'm not sure it'd work) this UGREEN USB 3.0 Ethernet+USB combo. This works with MiBox as expected so it may also work with your Sony TV.

Rii MX6 probably meets your needs. Good remote with a programmable IR power button. A few niggles for me:

  • Voice works reasonably well, but pressing the button won't trigger the assistant. You have to engage it on screen first. (Same problem for all non-official remotes I've ever encountered.)
  • You have to press any button first to wake the remote, then press the button you want. Sleeps after just a minute or two I think.
  • Numbers and alt characters on the keyboard are really hard to see when the backlight illuminates. Dark blue on black was an irritating design oversight.
  • OK button is mapped to 'enter' rather than 'select' I think, so very occasionally that might trip up interaction with a poorly programmed app. For instance, some single button games won't work properly. Minor issue though.

Also worth saying as your device is not officially certified as an Android TV device, there might be some other issues I'm unaware of.

Otherwise it's a good remote and you probably won't find a better one for your specified needs currently.

i ordered this months ago, and it finally arrived yesterday. It paired easily, works good so far. The trade off is there is no voice search. I spent forever trying to find an actual Nexus Player replacement remote but other than the game controller had no luck finding one for a reasonable price. It was cheaper to buy a new Nexus Player then just getting a remote

u/PalebloodSky · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

Any Android TV device including both of those above will do that. Both come with remotes. Mi Box S is $60 at Walmart and works fine, Shield TV is on sale right now at most outlets for $140 and is overall faster/better supported.

Not sure if this is an option for you, but I replaced my Nexus Player remote with a MINIX NEO A2 Lite and Next/Prev/Pause all work for Google Play Music.

Alternately, you can cast from your phone to the TV (I'm assuming the TV is Cast-capable) and then control Next/Prev/Pause from your phone.

u/ncsupack · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

What kind of things are you trying to accomplish with your setup? You'd probably be a lot more future proof by getting an Nvidia Shield for $70 more.

Most of the APKs work fine once you enable installation from unknown sources. There are some APKs that don't work correctly from FireTV, since they do a check for the Operating System. WatchESPN is an app that comes to mind that you have to get an APK for an Android phone. If you try to sideload the FireTV WatchESPN APK, you get errors.

Keep in mind that a lot of apps won't work properly with a remote, since they are made with touch gestures in mind. It's smart to get a mouse or keyboard to use on the TV so that you can use these sideloaded apps properly. This one works perfect.

u/mr_yuk · 5 pointsr/AndroidTV

As a gen1 Pro owner my take is that the only reason to get the Gen2 Pro is if you are running Plex Server on it or you require the IR receiver. You can expand the internal storage with a USB3.0 flash drive. The old specs listed a 128GB limit. The new specs mention a specific 128 drive as a recommended model but do not mention a storage limit. Still for $28 on Amazon you can have 144GB storage.

The febite mx3 pro can do IR on the power button as well as the bottom 4 colored buttons. I'm using it with a raspberry pi3 running libreelec and have the power button turn on/off the tv since the pi is the only thing plugged in and it stays on all the time. I programmed the bottom 4 for input switching, mute and vol +/- but I just have the tv turned up loud enough that I'm using the volume control within kodi via the vol +/- on the remote and haven't needed the bottom 4. I think there's a few minor variations on those air mouse type remotes, the one I got is at https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015O5UM6M

You may find that your TV remote works also. The ones from my sharp and sony tv's work. The only thing that I have not been able to figure out is how to wake up the mi box.

Others have reported the Logitech remotes work. A quick search of this subedit should find that information.

Not really, you can get a set like the logitech wave that pairs the mouse and keyboard to one receiver, or a keyboard with a trackpad build in

Similar options from Logitech are the K400 and K400 Plus.

I can confirm the Bluetooth version (Rii I8+ BT) DID NOT WORK. It would not pair with the Mibox. I'm using the only USB slot for the wifi version of that remote (Rii I8+ Wifi confirmed working). I ordered the item below for a combined ethernet with 3 additional USB ports. Also ordered a Gamesir GS3. Will report if that works.

You mean something like this? It will just pair over bluetooth?

This device does it all. Every face button you never knew you didn't need. Almost complete keyboard on back, extremely reliable for no-look typing. Very accurate air mouse.

However, it's USB wireless, so CEC TV On won't work once the Mi Box is asleep.

But hey, it's <$20. Just get it.

Hmm, unable to find any information about this new device on nVidia website

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/shield/specs/

So how, to know anywhing about device when you purchase it?

Is this correct / new latest device? https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-Gaming-Streaming-GeForce/dp/B075RXV2VR/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=nvidia%2Bshield%2B2nd%2Bgen&qid=1571683755&sr=8-1&th=1

Seconding the Shield here with the caveat that you also pick up one of [these remotes.] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B016OABW8S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) The keyboard really comes in handy. Also, be sure to sideload Firefox onto it. The Puffin Browser sucks.

I bought this one and it works for my Mi Box. I don't have the S though so I can't say for sure.

u/nexus4strife · 3 pointsr/AndroidTV

Lack of updates, no ethernet (had to buy a USB one since the WiFi was pretty unreliable), glitchy video and sound, crashes and freezes randomly, and a few other reasons i can't think of ATM.

u/nooneisreal · 5 pointsr/AndroidTV

So did Amazon leak the price of the new Shield and the release date?

$199.99 and January 16th. Kind of disappointed that they didn't lower the price.

I'm using this [Harmony Smart Control] (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Control-Smartphone-Simple/dp/B00BQ5RYI4/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1457972135&sr=1-8&keywords=logitech+harmony) Not going to lie its a little bit of a pain to setup, mainly because Logitech's software is a dumpster fire. But once its up and running it works flawless. Wife and 4 year old use it without problems.

Here's the link, I bought this one too. Works great. Yea, the MiBox is USB 2, so you won't get the full gigabit speed, but I get more than 100Mbit/s. Doing a speedtest via fast.com on my 150 mbps connection, I get what I do via a PC about 160... IMO, it's worth it to get the usb 3 gigabit adapter, you won't get gigabit speed, but you'll get more than 100mbit which is what you'd cap yourself at with a usb 2 adapters.

The reason I got mine was for some reason the mi box was messing up my router's 5 ghz network. If I left the mi box on the 2.5 Ghz network, everything would work fine, but then I'd get speed issues with it buffering more. Switch to 5 Ghz, buffering went away but randomly usually every 2-6 hours, my router's 5 Ghz network would stop working and then suddenly come back after 15 minutes... Switched the mi box to ethernet and disabled wifi and no more problems.

Have you tried other controllers or is it the Nexus Player itself the problem? There's no voice search with it but I've seen other people have paired the old Fire Stick remote (bluetooth) with the Nexus Player. https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Remote-Amazon-Fire-Stick/dp/B00LORGAG6/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8
