chances are your phone will be a little slower because Froyo uses less of your resources than Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean do. that being said, I laughed at Froyo because I know how bad it is. all I'm seeing is CM 7 if you want something official, stable and not slowing you down at all. CM 7 makes Gingerbread tolerable. you didn't say if you had a Bravo or Bravoc, so here's the CM wiki links for both the GSM version and CDMA version. the CM wiki has guides on how to flash the roms on each device. for either one, pick the stable CM 7.2 out of the download list.

also, as another user said, you can just use MTP to get files to your SD card. but I'd definitely invest in a card reader if you plan to stick with Android phones. it's definitely useful, and one I got recently with a Micro SD slot is less than $5 on Amazon. and it's a very nice reader if you only need SD and Micro SD, especially given its price. I use it more than the one built into my laptop because of the Micro slot. it's so much easier than using an SD adapter.

if you need any help with the root or flashing process, I will assist you as best I can. otherwise, good luck and I hope this helps.

Yup, second hand is pretty awkward for gifts.

You could consider the Asus MeMO Pad ME172V. Asus also make the Nexus 7 so I guess it's kind of comparable, but the reviews in that vein of comparison aren't too favourable since the screen is criticised, as is the overall speed of the device due to the chip used.

That said, the reason for the difference is that it's cheaper than a Nexus 7 and Asus still have to turn a profit off this thing, whilst the N7 is basically being sold at cost by Google to get Android in people's hands. That's why the Nexus line is so appealing, you get such bang for your buck. If an N7 is out of the question, I'd hope this thing could contend with other for-profit tablets in its price range, so it may well be the best choice.

What about the Galaxy Tab 2?

It has great reviews on Amazon and you can order a refurbished one for $150.

I've just started researching tablets, so if someone knows of a reason not to get this one, please let me know.

I use this screen protector and it's amazing. I can barely tell that it's there, it's completely transparent and really, really high quality.

I actually really like the Android L Keyboard, or Swiftkey.

If you want to try something weird try Minuum. It's a cool idea, I just couldn't move to something that didn't have swipe functionality.

here's S4 buds for $5ish on amazon. I bought for my GF about 8 months ago and they seemed legit.
