I used to commute from SF to Redwood City via CalTrain, with about 2 miles of biking on either side of the train. My gear:

  • full finger bike gloves (possibly Pearl Izumi, but they weren't heavy)
  • Marmot raincoat
  • running capris
  • REI brand pull-over, pretty lightweight
  • GORE fluorescent yellow legwarmers and armwarmers (like this)
  • lights!! I usually have two Cygolite Streaks on the front and a Cygolite Hotshot on the back.
-I'd also recommend fenders or bringing a change of underwear in case you butt gets wet

It's not too bad :) I'm about to bike to work in the rain wearing pretty much what I just outlined.

All great questions, will try to answer them all:

  • Yes, people can drop off the bikes anywhere, as long as it's locked up to a bike rack. We have runners to manage the flow of bikes if there is build up in an area, run bikes to bike shops for more serious maintenance, do deliveries, etc.
  • There are two types of bikes. "Reserve" and "Request", reserve are available on demand. Request bikes are available by request, if your bike is requested we'll pick it up from you and deliver it to the user.
  • You can take your bike offline whenever you want via the bike owner dashboard. Most people rent out an extra bike, not their primary.
  • We've tested a few different types and are now using these Kryptonite Combo U-lock
  • We're verifying users (social) and holding credit cards with deposit authorization, so while in theory someone could do this, it hasn't happened. If it did, we'd pay out the replacement cost of the bike that you add when you sign up your ride.
  • If someone damages your bike in the process of the ride they are responsible. When they ride they're agreeing to cover damage of the bike and accessories on it (lock, lights, etc.)
  • Insurance specifics are going to vary state to state. We're stilling figuring this out for CA.
  • We take all the revenue each month then divide it up amongst the bike owners based on total number of rides + total ride time per bike. We're setting the prices for all bikes. We have owners in Austin making $100/mo per bike.

...could be replaced with this hub. :)

Option 3, sans the back stop, sounds a lot like a bike seat leash. I've used one as a helmet lock on occasion by pushing the end loops through helmet vents and then putting the u-lock through the loops.

Might not be what you're looking for, but I picked this up a few weeks ago for my tiny ass apartment:

I have two bikes on and it gets them off the floor and frees up a lot of space. Worked out well for me so far.
