Not a man, nor do I have a beard, but my SO does and I enjoy my hair care. Best suggestion I could make, if you're worried about breakage, is oil it at night and use a silk pillowcase or somehow finagle a silk scarf around your beard (I'm just the idea guy, you can figure out the logistics). The silk keeps it under control and keeps it from frizzing/breaking. Honestly, you might look into some of the African-American hair care methods. That's where I started when I began making beard oils/balms for my SO as his beard is pretty coarse and thick, and it's served me well so far.
Also, if you're worried about the hair ties damaging, use knotted or no crease hair ties. I find they're a bit easier on the hair.
Check out Outlaw Beard Products. Based out of Turner Valley Alberta. Very quick shipping and reasonable rates. The black one is a bit of a 'pepper' scent. The beige one is a kind of 'chocolate' scent. Not bad, but different than what I'm used to... I'd like to try the red one.
It's nice because shipping isn't over the top and it's in CDN dollars.

Mammoth is also amazing. The Devils Reserve is the best oil I've ever used, hands down.

Waiting on the dollar correction so I can get back to Honest Amish without breaking the bank.
Edit - I'm a dummy. You're looking for a brush... not oils/balms. I've purchased mine through Amazon.ca. This is a goodie

Yea I use I pretty good one myself, comes in handy especially if my beard is looking wild in the morning.

You should get an oil, wax, shampoo and a comb. I love the smell of this oil has a vanillay spicey smell that I love. This is a decent oil that doesn't smell like anything. If you wanna try a balm Amish Beard Balm is the one I use.
This and This are the two combs I have and use. Depending on what your mustache is might not need the smaller one. Scissors are nice to get rid of the crazy hairs.
Wax for me was the hardest to find a good one that didn't leave white stuff. Amish has one that I like and then I like This.
Any questions just ask!
Though that is conventionally true of spray bottles in general, I have been reading lots of reviews for these olive oil misters and many of them get great reviews in regards to not clogging using olive oil which is notably heavier than any beard oil I've ever used personally.
One part of the experiment that is yet unresolved is the best mister to use. I am looking for a unit that:
I stumbled across units like this one that might be cool for adjusting how much tea tree oil I want in my mixture.
I just got a Bass boar bristle brush in the mail today and so far I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Quality seems pretty great, so far.
I'll try linking it when I'm not on mobile...

Kent combs are great if you have a short or straight beard. Mine is kind of long and its curly so unless im using a hair dryer i cant get even a wide tooth kent (i have a 12T) through my beard. I do use this for my mustache though.
I personally use a Wet Brush and boar bristle brush on the main beard and the kent comb on my mustache.
If you are looking for a pocket comb and have a thick/course beard, this is as good as it gets:

I generally dont carry a comb on me these days because my beard is a little longer, but i needed one all the time in the early stages and this one is great.
I love my wahl lithium ion stainless steel trimmer.
https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Stainless-Rechargeable-Professionals-9818/dp/B0058SY1XQ
I’ve had it for 2 years and it’s been hassle free. The battery on it lasts seriously long. I trim my neckline and beard every other day and only charge once a month.
My one annoyance with it is that the comb sizes go 3mm, 6mm, 10mm, 13mm, 17mm, 20mm. The jump from 6mm to 10mm is a pretty noticeable change and I wish it had an 8mm.
I bought the Wahl Peanut a few years ago and I love it. I tried 3 different battery operated trimmers previously, and they all ended up dying. I would not recommend a battery operated trimmer unless you like replacing your trimmer every year.
I chose the Peanut because it’s what I’ve seen in professional barbershops. It’s my favorite and I use it to keep my Paul Krugman look going.
I use castille soap as a base because it doesn't have all the additives other shampoos have. I've even found several "beard shampoos" have stuff in them that are really bad for your beard. Because I can't be bothered making my own castille soap (yet) I used Dr. Bronner's.
https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Bronners-Pure-Castile-Liquid/dp/B000HK1OOY
It's unscented unlike a lot of other castille soaps I've tried, which is really nice because then you can add your own scent. I use essential oils to create a slightly sweet, earthy mint smell. Also the baby soap variety is especially mild, which is great for your beard.
I have relatively think beard hair and the battery options just weren't cutting it - pun intended.
Check out the Whal Peanut - https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Professional-Clipper-Trimmer-8655-200/dp/B001FDKGIW
Only con is the lack of attachments. It comes with 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" guards and I don't see anything other than those sizes for the Peanut on Amazon. If you are looking to use this on your head, definitely consider this first.
This stuff will solve all your beard management problems. Honest Amish Beard Balm Leave-in Conditioner
When I first heard of this stuff, I was unsure how it was going to work and hesitant to take the leap and make the purchase, but I'm glad I did.
Here's what you do.
You take a dab of this stuff, rub it between your hands till it turns into an oil like substance, and apply it to a damp beard (I usually use it after I shower). Now, massage it into your beard, then take the time to get yourself styled to your liking.
After all that, Your application site is going to feel a little oily/greasy for about 30-45min till it's absorbed, but once it is absorbed. Your beard should hold its shape. If it doesn't, they also offer a more aggressive option.
Later on down the road, your beard will be trained to the point that you wont need to apply the stuff as often.
Comb your bear all you like, it needs as much attention as your beard.
On a different note, I've just bought this beard brush on Amazon.
Thanks for all the advice! I'll be back with beard updates!
Botanical Skin Works. The label started peeling off last month, so I pulled it off and threw it out. It may have had a date I never noticed, but now I can't check. Regardless, I regret not buying from a small-batch operation, like a lot of the one-man-bands that hang around here.
Look for anti-dandruff shampoo, like Head and Shoulders, or something like T-Gel.
Also, look into one of the many beard oils. Check out /r/beardoil
You could handcraft a beard oil for him, it's fairly easy. Start with a 1-2 oz bottle with a dropper fill most of the way with jojoba oil and add 10-20 drops of essential oil for scent.
I found everything at a local organic grocery store.
I use Jojoba Oil. Specifically from Now Foods. In terms of scent. I'd describe it as slightly nutty. I stopped going for oils specifically aimed at beards because I think the price point is too high as a "specialty" item.
http://www.amazon.com/NOW-Foods-Jojoba-Pure-ounce/dp/B0009NBCXC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1415077384&sr=8-3&keywords=jojoba+oil
I've been very happy with it.
I have, what I believe, is the previous model to this one. Solid chrome. I've not had any issues with it. Charges in about 20 minutes and is good for month or so. Granted I don't use it daily. And mostly to trim around the edges of my ears and back neck. I use scissors on the beard.
Edit; Found the one I have. Just remember to not get it wet and buy a bottle of clipper oil that closes well and toss that little bottle that comes with the clippers. Oh, and you want a trimmer that you can purchase and/or sharpen the blades.

Yup. All of this. Great advice!
Also, people swear by this and can keep it under control:
