If you haven't read this book, I highly recommend it. Also got me thinking about how nice it would be for a season or two. Mighty lovely life sometimes I bet...
From the age of the forest around it, that tree was probably felled 60-80 years ago. Stumps like this are commonplace in the PNW, where early industrialized forestry chewed through 95% of the original old growth. I rode my bike past a dozed such tombstones this afternoon. Applying a modern 'morality' to the past makes about as much sense as shooting the messenger. It is what it is and all we can do is be better in the future. Read the Golden Spruce.
A little more instructive, I recently picked up an older edition of this book at a thrift store for fifty cents, which sits on the coffee table...in my cabin. ;)
