The basic specs are not that difficult to achieve, you can buy similar mobile phone based products on Amazon right now and similar optical trickery has been used in flight simulators for ages.

I don't know what exactly the short comings of this approach are, but I assume there are some, given that both Microsoft and MagicLeap didn't went this route and opted to go with different technology (which is much more expensive, yet nowhere near a 90° FOV).

But it doesn't really matter much anyway, as with just 3DOF tracking the thing is essentially useless, it's just TV glasses which have been around for ages at all levels of quality and never been more than a tiny niche. For real AR you need proper 6DOF tracking so that you can anchor objects in the real world and on top of that you need tons of software to make it useful, which these guys don't have.
