I usually avoid combos, I have cabela's catfish rods, they're nothing special. If I were to upgrade them, I'd look into like an ugly stick 2 piece, about 7-10 long, fiberglass, and about a medium action. If you look into european stuff the sky is the limit. I got some okuma avenger bait feeding reels, the 50 size which is a little big but was cheaper, I really like them, but recently had a couple line related mishaps that were probably caused by my inattention when setting them up.

I've had some bend and lost fish, but I think it's more due to setting the drag too tight when the carp is running.

Now I make my own using braided line and carp hooks. You will need a baiting needle and bait stops to put the corn or fake corn on.
