I love North Face stuff. They were really big when I was growing up, and there is a reason why. They're durable, lightweight and really nice for organized people. The organizer is so nice! Also, I've never seen anyone (guy or girl) mess up any work inside one of these bags. My sister is a natural mess. Two weeks into school, if you look at her bag, all the papers, folders, binders are already worn, torn, folded, damaged from the rain, etc. I see guys who throw their North Face bag all the time, and you look inside and it's friggin neat as hell. I don't know. Maybe they have a secret.
Also! Someone mentioned something about hip straps. These have hip straps, as well :)
These are my favorites if you're female. Minimalistic and efficient.

If you're a guy..:
Heckler
Borealis
Surge
I've never liked any other brands. They're either not as durable, or way too rigid. I've had Jansport as well. When I carried textbooks, the edges of the books poked into my back and made it super uncomfortable. Given, I don't think they're made for textbooks. Either way, they ripped. :(
You'll have a hard time finding anything decent with a scanner for less than that. If you're willing to forego the scanner, you can get a Brother HL-2230 for $70.
In general, you definitely want a laser printer. Inkjets are temperamental money pits that usually die within a couple years, unless you're willing to spend a couple hundred dollars (and hundreds more on ink). A sub-$100 laser printer should last you through college and well beyond on just a couple toner cartridges at $45 each.
Also, consider purchasing a laser printer and scanner separately. That way, if there's a problem with one, you'll still be able to use the other.
EDIT: I take that back, here's a Brother DCP-7065DN for under $110. That's a great deal; I'd get it while the getting's good.
> Also I recommend a cheap printer. It took until my third year to get a printer in my room and I'm so mad I waited so long.
You can sometimes find this laser printer on sale for $25.

I got an incredible North Face Backpack that I would buy again in a heartbeat.
