The hills look a lot more brutal than they are. I see elderly folks crushing it up the steepest hills, no problem. Just warm up to it like everything else and use your gears. If you get tired just take the bus, each bus has an easy to use bike rack on the front.

Winter isn't too bad. I rode through the whole year, and it was fine, I see a lot of people biking all winter. Just wear your 'PPE', helmet, gloves, maybe some goggles. There's no shame in taking the bus sometimes, all the busses have a bike rack on the front. A hybrid or mountain bike is probably ideal, but I have seen some road bikes in use. Keep an extra tube, pump, and tire levers. There is also a nice bike pump in front of Bus Stop Bagels that is nice to use when you just need to top up some pressure.

You may not need to bring a bike, apparently there is a bike share program, Big Red Bikes, but I haven't looked into it, seems interesting.

Hope you have fun beefing up those quads :P

- get a lightweight bike, travel light, wear protective gear, carry water, stay warm, take the bus with bike if needed.

- edit: has anyone tried using lime bike? is it easier to get up the hills on them?

Bought this Tommy parka a few weeks ago. Used this bad boy a few times already and I love it. You can find other good ones on Amazon as well (make sure they're prime products because those are usually verified).

Two easy solutions I've done over the years:

  1. Walk up and ask them to tone it down a little. 99% chance they'll feel slightly embarrassed and actually will. 1% chance they'll get snarky about it. I once had this guy and girl get snarky about it lol.
  2. I recently got myself a pair of these bad boys, pretty great if I do say so https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00CPCHBCQ/ref=twister_B06Y3YSCSF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

To be honest, it seems like you're doing just about everything you can. In the meantime you might want to look into something like https://smile.amazon.com/MEKKAPRO-Mosquito-Repellent-Openings-Curtains/dp/B01KKMZRFK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1540814355&sr=8-2&keywords=extended+double+bug+net to at least give yourself a good nights sleep.

To be honest, it's really shitty that this is such a problem considering how much cornell charges for housing, I hope you get it sorted out soon OP!

Kiwi Camp Dry Heavy Duty Water Repellent

Hose your new backpack down with a can of that, and you should be good to go. Warning: it WILL alter the colors of the material a bit.

Also, be aware that waterproof backpack covers exist, and are a common item among serious backpackers:

Backpack Cover

Stuff one of those down in a pocket of the bag and ignore it exists until you need it.

I used a Swissgear Synergy for years as a professional Network Engineer, and recommend the product.

I recently transitioned to a Everki backpack, and am pretty happy with it. I haven't had to slog through the kinds of weather with it as are being discussed in this thread though.

I bought a pair of LL Bean Turbo Transits for one of my kids and a family friend who is an Engineering major at UVA. No complaints from either party as yet.

I use a Stick + Throttle controller from Saitek (now owned by Logitech) and a headtracker called TrackIR. KBM will not work. Gamepad might, but you can always start off with a basic stick like this one:

This condensed manual should be enough to get you started.

this is a pretty useful self paced python book... I know a pre-frosh that was in a similar position who found this helpful

I already got the homework code. I'm just concerned with whether or not the version of the textbook I found on amazon (https://www.amazon.com/General-Chemistry-Donald-McQuarrie/dp/1891389602/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502422218&sr=8-1&keywords=general+chemistry+mcquarrie) is significantly different from the cornell custom version on blackboard.

Literally a life saver. Kept these in my backpack and never had any issues. With those I was able to run from the commons up to campus when it was so icy other people could barely stand.

On the really bitter days, you can use a half-mask to shield the lower half of your face. It sits under your glasses so it avoids fogging issue of scarfs.

Something like:
