> never owned a diesel before

Once you experience the torque of a diesel, it's hard to go back to a gasser. My first diesel was an LB7. I bought it with 200,000 miles and sold it when it dropped an injector at 300,000 miles. Loved the truck and power. Injectors and head gasket are what to watch for on the LB7. Use a good fuel treatment and watch your coolant reservoir for a dark ring indicating head gasket issue. If you're really committed to the truck, add a Fass Fuel System.

I swapped out my fuel filter for a finer CAT filter using a Nicktane adapter and change it every 10,000 miles. Probably overkill, but I have the LB7 with spotty injectors, so I figure it doesn't hurt to be cautious.

After a lot of reading, I replaced the transmission fluid with Mobil Delvac Synthetic ATF using a double drain and fill method. I chose this fluid because it meets the Allison TES-295 standard which they state should be OK for 150,000 miles in medium-duty applications. They also recommend replacing the spin-on transmission filter at 50,000 mile intervals. I also used this fluid for the transfer case fill, and will probably change it around 50,000 miles.

This one has been working great for me, if you can swing the bilstein it is also a good option.
You'll need a 7/16 x 2.25 bolt, nut, and lock washer though.

So in my 06 LBZ I moved from conventional oil to a synthetic blend (T5) then to a full synthetic (Shell Rotella T6) at my last oil change. I also purchased a fumoto valve, that replaces your drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan, and has a ball valve in it, so you can hook up a hose, and then open the valve and cleanly drain your oil into a catch pan, or jugs or whatever your using. Now that I'm at 10k mile intervals with the T6 and I don't daily drive my Duramax anymore, I haven't had to do an oil change yet, but will be doing one at the end of the summer. Lots of oil threads on duramaxforum.com as well.
