I would check out Steven Keen's PDF article here. Austrian economics relies on Say's Law. Without it, a free market is not possible. For an excellent and well researched debunking of Austrian Business Cycle Theory (ABCT) see here. For an excellent book which covers issues of the economic calculation debate, methodological individualism, and other issues see The Market. Also Debunking Economics by Steve Keen has 3 chapters that debunk core issues of Austrian Economics. Perhaps the best criticism of Austrian Economics can be found the Social Democracy for the 21st Century which comes from a Post Keynesian perspective. That should get you started but there is much more to learn. If you want to really understand Austrian Economics you need to sit down and read the books about it. I found "The Elgar Companion to Austrian Economics" to be a great source for someone new to the subject. It has about a 100 article briefly explaining different aspects of Austrian Economics. However, you'll have to do more research to get a good grasp of the subject.

>I agree. I figure there is no difference between Obama and Romney, and I'd be voting for Ron Paul as VP.

what gets me about this statement is its so fundamentally wrong. The concept of a political ideology completely smashes this statement into the ground, but just even looking past that for a second we come to this. They perceive the two parties to be the same because they base their comparisons on the end result coming from our government. Since our government is naturally a pull-push battle between two sides the final product, or legislation, is something both people support. So they overgeneralize this factor and state "well since republicans and democrats both supported it they're the same". its absolutely breath taking the lack of knowledge these people have in terms of understanding the way our government works. I'd love to put one book in all their hands and tell them to read up.

>>philosophical figure

>You are severely overstating Rand's stature.

Well, you're certainly welcome to (try to) defend your (false) assertion with any (supposed) facts you can muster....

Good luck with that. :-)

Meanwhile, this volume, edited by a leading Aristotle scholar at the #3-ranked philosophy department in the world (source), just dropped, so there's that.

I meant being willing to actually read a full article, or in this case LRonPAul2012's excellent post. How many crazy Austrian economics articles have you read, just to try to understand the opposing point of view?

But yes a basic macro textbook would be a good start.

Edited to add: I would be up for starting a EPS book club of relevant books if anyone is interested.

I just started "Boomerang" by Michael Lewis.

Is there a Ron Paul variety of this? I would certainly think about importing it if there was.

Evolution of the Social Contract

The Lockean Theory of Rights

Governing a Republic: Rousseau’s General Will and the Problem of Government (This is a short essay)

I could give critiques of these books too, but I assume you'll look for the critiques as I did when you finish.

Ha. I just finished Going Clear so it made me think about it. Good book.

I'm not an historian, but I enjoy how it's less formal than /r/askhistorians. I browse /r/libertarian often enough I could flood that sub with Lost Cause shit all day long, but they get enough of it already.

Here's a better wording:

Y'know, like dudes, I just barely got into politics, like, by reading this interesting essay called, here it comes, "Libertarianism in one lesson", and I like, you know, it totally blew my mind away, man, making me actually care about politics for the first time in my 12 years of life. And now I totally know more about what I'm talking about than those who, y'know, have spent most of their adult lives actually involved in it, and totally found out that they're all spewing bullshit, as politics, history, and the world are obviously so simple a 5 year old could know more than those dudes.

However, everywhere I've posted so far, dude, everyone has been endlessly agreeing with me. I can't feel like a self righteous prick as long as everyone's doing that, y'know. So I thought I'd stop in, and y'know, claim that no one else had any legitimate arguments before I go in for another toke, so that I could fail to read anything else, and then mock those who don't agree with me telling them about how they don't know what they're talking about and shame them into becoming self righteous pricks much like myself.

And once I do that, I'll convert every last one of you to see things like myself (you'll see. Only libertarians have any correct ideas to begin with, y'know), and we'll embrace rainbows, unicorns, and Ron Paul for president, who is obviously getting the most delegates out of all of the candidates, and share in the holy bong passed around until we all drop dead from a return to guilded age policies, not because they were so terrible, but because we were so blindsighted, dudes, that we didn't react fast enough, and all of the conspiracy theories came true all at once, and we weren't willing to act soon enough to stop them from happening at all.

In Liberty,

>Its always irritating how they say that Ron Paul is doing things for the black community by releasing nonviolent drug offenders. As if the whole nonviolent drug community is completely black.

Because this is totally what they're saying. Read a book why don't you.
