TLDR: Tips on how to record with any type of Mic

So I make hypnosis recordings professionally and I could get into some technical stuff but wellgnawed did a pretty good job going over that so I am going to go over more how I record. Step one find a place that has good acoustics in your home. This is pretty simple you only need to go room to room and speak like you would when you are going to record and see if you like the sound. It is best to avoid rooms that have any sort of echo. Try to work in a room that has a carpet or rug covering the floor.

Next if you can try to hang blankets from the wall or make a blanket fort. Your goal is to create an environment were the only sound the microphone is picking up is the sound coming from your mouth and not the reflected sound off the walls. Sound in rooms with hard walls that reflect sound can make what is called standing waves. This will result in certain frequency ranges becoming exaggerated. This is what makes large reflective spaces like a gymnasium have that kinda off sound. Just do the best you can and test how it sounds with your ears before setting up. If it sounds like an environment where you could listen to your voice for a long time then it is good enough.

Next you will want a mic stand or desk arm that can hold your mic in shock mount and support a pop filter. Now a shock mount isolates your mic from the stand so if you bump it gently it will not ruin your take. They look like this (https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Microphone-Suspension-Broadcasting-Voice-over/dp/B00C86FA0E/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1500782010&sr=8-8&keywords=blue+yeti+shockmount). This where I would say also not to buy a Blue Yeti mic or the Snowball. They don't fit in cheap shock mounts you could spend $50+ on a Blue Yeti mount (https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Radius-II-Microphone-Improved/dp/B00TTQLA50/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1500782010&sr=8-2&keywords=blue+yeti+shockmount). Work on placing your mic in a way that it faces your mouth and it is about 6 inches to at most about 12 inches away from your mouth. Then put on your pop filter and see if you are comfy and can stand or sit up straight. Then record a test clip to see if you like the sound. I recommend count down from 5 to 1. 5 has a nice loud I sound in it and you can use this to see if you need to adjust your gain to make your mic more or less sensitive. This can take a bit of time think of this like tuning an instrument. It is also a great time to do some vocal warm ups.

Now if you are reading from a script and you have a cardioid pattern mic a suggested placement of the mic would be at about a 45 degree angle from your mouth so that you hold your script out in front of you to read off of without the mic in the way. But it is key to test this set up first by recording a clip and then listening to it to make sure it works in your space. Also place your mic so that any sources of noise such as a laptop are on the least sensitive side of the mic (normally the back). Also take breaks to breathe between lines. It can be easy when you record to get on a roll and then forget to breathe, which can result in your vocals sounding weaker.

So some other things are that you should drink lots of water long before you start recording and have some handy when you are. If you are a little dehydrated your mouth will make sticky sounds. Also if you are in a loud environment getting closer to the mic and turning down the gain can help make you loud and the background soft. As far as buying a mic look at the patterns it offers. Link showing patterns (http://www.shure.eu/support_download/educational_content/microphones-basics/microphone_polar_patterns). Cardioid is a common and very useful pattern for vocals. Next see what kind of mic you want. Common types are condenser and dynamic mics. You can use both of them for vocals, a condenser mic is usually found in a studio in more optimal conditions, and a lot of popular stage mics are dynamic and they are put less optimal conditions. Finally there is the connection type the common ones are USB and XLR. USB is convenient but you will not find it on any equipment that is meant for true professional use. I also find that a lot of USB mics have higher levels of noise than XLR mics. This seems to be more of an issue in USB condenser mics. XLR is a 3 pin analog connector that carries data and sometimes power (48 volt Phantom Power). To use XLR mics on a computer you will need a USB interface. Be sure to check if your interface provides phantom power if your mic needs it. If you just want to make a recording for fun I recommend sticking with mics that connect via USB. If you ever want to consider recording things more seriously then getting an XLR interface and XLR mic would be the way to go. Also a lot of interfaces take inputs from a guitar amps so you can record a sound with vocals if that is your thing. Another thing to check for is zero-latency monitoring. This means you can listen to yourself on headphones as you record with the mic with no lag or delay. This can help speed up your sound checks. Finally watch a review online of the mic you want to buy. Try to find a person with a similar voice to yours speaking into it. Your ears are the best tool you have to making a good recording. One last note make sure you have decent headphones. You will want over the ear closed back headphones if you are trying to compare audio. You can make earbuds do but it really is best to just make the jump up to something better. Wow, this was a bit longer than I intended. Well good luck with your recording and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Here are the books specifically on erotic hypnosis that I'd actually recommend:

Mind Play by MARK Wiseman-- this one is linked in the sidebar to the right. It's a good overview of hypnosis in general, hypnosis play in the bedroom and in relationships, and the erotic hypnosis community.

Erotic Hypnosis Scripts by Chewtoy (me!). Obviously I'm biased on this one, ;) but I think it's full of fun ideas for play.

Hypnotic Amnesia by Lee Allure and DJ Pynchon. Obviously this is very specific, rather than covering hypnosis in general or even kinky hypnosis in general; but, well, amnesia play is hot. ;) The book covers a year-long dive the two authors made into every different technique they could think of for inducing hypnotic amnesia, with notes on their experiences.

Hypnotize Your Lover... Deeper by Wendi Friesen. Wendi is a successful hypnotherapist whose practice is mostly not centered around sexy stuff, but she doesn't conspicuously shy away from it as the larger hypnotherapy organizations seem to. This book is a sort of grab bag of different ideas, along with a decent introduction to hypnosis for those who are new to it.

The Mind Play Study Guide by Mark Wiseman. Sort of a sequel to Mind Play, this covers a few new topics, and appears to be written as a sort of guide to presenting classes on erotic hypnosis at kink conventions.

Look Into My Eyes: How To Use Hypnosis To Bring Out the Best In Your Sex Life by Peter Masters. Another overview including an introduction to hypnosis aimed at those new to it. A bit lighter on the D/s angle than, say, Mind Play.

Beyond Games of Trance by Alex Tsander. Actually I haven't finished reading this one yet, so I'm not sure about it; it's spendy and has a lot of "you kids get off my lawn" in the beginning.

(If anyone knows of more, I'd love to hear about them!)

I'll just add an echo for Mind Play - A Guide to Erotic Hypnois by Mark Wiseman

There are a number of erotic hypnosis groups on Fetlife. Which is a route to finding events near you and other people doing hypnosis.

For books I also like to recommend:

Monsters and Magical Sticks. There's no such thing as Hypnosis by Steven Heller

Trance-Formations Neuro Lingustic Programming and the Structure of Hypnosis by Richard Bandler & John Grinder

Specifically the Exercises I, II and III :)

Before Mind Play came along and became the Defacto community standard this was my go to recommendation:

Look Into my Eyes by Peter Masters

Your wife will know you are both new at this. One common bit of advice is to "Be The Hypnotist". Which is to say have absolute confidence that what you are doing will work.

The moment you have success - and with a willing partner like this there is no reason you won't - it gets easier to build on that.

Humans have a habit of rationalizing. Which means afterwards they say "I was just playing along" or "I didn't feel hypnotised", which can be one of the hardest parts to overcome. Having some experience and being pretty damn sure they were hypnotised it got easier after convincing them they were.

There are set pieces out there that utilise an induction and the 'convincers'.

In the UK Anthony Jacquin or Jonathan Chase present similar training material for Street Magic.

Here's there set piece.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i90iXhELM0&index=9&list=PLLOptAK72kDrJAOkMD-sNKBTfYs0WNot5

Here's there inductions and if I got the link right there should be a whole series in the playlist.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x85prwKYgOQ&index=1&list=PLLOptAK72kDrJAOkMD-sNKBTfYs0WNot5

(If you want to look into that more then "Reality Is Plastic" by Anthony Jacquin )

But that's not erotic or in the bedroom. His style is chatty and sharp and he might have picked the volunteers from the audience.

So how do you do this in the bedroom?

It wouldn't hurt to "do a roleplay". In which she imagines she is the best hypnotic subject ever and for want of a better explanation, plays along.

It can be that simple.

Before, During and After try and get your partner to talk about her experience.

Remember the way she describes things - because if you use similar language it will work better.

(That's what the exercises in Trance Formations cover).

On the subject of audio files. It may help you a great deal to study how others talk. Hypnotists have 'a voice'.

You can also listen to them without going into Hypnosis and you can skip through parts.

May a few minutes of induction and then to half-way through to get to the 'content'.

Your wife may listen to a few files and just find them very erotic - in which case you can use the suggestions that they are using as material to hone in on what she likes to hear.

Your subconscious will automatically disregard a suggestion that it feels is dangerous or that it doesn’t want to do.

However, your subconscious isn’t analytical. It doesn’t think things through. That’s the job of your conscious mind. Your subconscious relies on feelings, on habits, on similarities with past experience.

It’s absolutely possible for your subconscious to be tricked. To do things which feel good, but which you, in your conscious mind, in the cold light day, would say, ”No. Not a good idea.”

Thus it’s vital to practice hypnosis with someone you trust. Or, if you’re using online materials, to use a trusted source. Someone who cares about your conscious consent and your limits.

I recommend reading Mind Play by Mark Wiseman for more information.

\> What I mean by that is that she went from disliking something to getting really into it.

Awesome!

Can you go through the goal, where you were starting, what you did and where you finished? I think it helps to have a concrete example that you can attach the tips back to, and it sounds like this was a multiple week process. It sounds like your wife is really good at relating her viewpoint and it'd be interesting to get her experience as well.

Also, /u/h-sleepingirl just wrote a Brainwashing book that might be helpful for you.

$497!?

Seriously bud. There's no substitute for practice. Hang out in one of the hypnotic discords and learn how to hypnotize there.

My (free) guide over in the subreddit sidebar is all you need to know to get started, and Binaural Histolog's guide (also free) looks to be extensively and well written.

If you really want to spend money, buy WiseGuy's "MindPlay" for $25 if you want a well written run-down of how erotic hypnosis works and the best ways to go about it.

If after reading 2 free guides and a 200 page manual written by a well liked community mentor you still want to spend $500, then go right ahead.

Many of you are probably familiar with Mark Wiseman's book, Mind Play, or with some of his erotic writing on MCstories. He's a lovely person and very good at what he does, and he was the guest on this week's episode of the Sex Nerd Sandra podcast. Go have a listen!

(Disclaimer: I haven't had a chance to listen to the podcast yet myself, but I already know that Sandra is a fun host and Mark is a great speaker, so I have high expectations for the episode.)

If you have a Kindle, or failing that a smartphone with the Kindle App, definitely get How to Hypnotise Anyone - Confessions of a Rogue Hypnotist by The Rogue Hypnotist this is first book in the series.

It is really cheap on the Kindle and is one of the best introductions that I have read. There are several other follow on books covering various topics which are also good. They are quite similar so initially just pick the ones that you are interested in but I have found every one to have something of interest or a surprising story. Recommended.

I know it's not what you're asking but I wholeheartedly recommend you put in the time to learn it yourself. That way you can tailor the experience just how you two want it. It does take some time but I believe 100% that it's worth it. The sidebar lists a couple resources:

I released the second edition of my hypnosis for beginners book. It's now available in paperback for the first time, and the paperback edition comes with a free copy of the ebook.

You can buy the paperback edition here and the eBook edition here.

Was it Hypnography? It was one of the first erotic hypnosis recordings available. Despite amazon's listed release date, it's been available since 1999.

Check out Callahan's Lady by Spider Robinson. It's set in a brothel with all sorts of strange things going on, at one point involving mass mind-control.

A few works of John D. MacDonald (a favorite author of both Spider Robinson and Dean Koontz) touch on some odd mind-control themes, notably Wine Of the Dreamers and Nightmare In Pink, but they're less deliberately erotic.
