What you need to do is open the side of your computer and identify what kind of expansion slot you have on your motherboard - PCIe looks like this, AGP looks like this and PCI looks like this (for the PCIe slot, the x16 version is the one you need).

Now, for most Steam games you'll only need about a 1GB graphics card to run them on at least medium performance settings.

If you have a PCIe slot, I recommend something like this (UK) or this (US).

If you have an AGP slot, I recommend something like this (UK) or this (US) (I know these are 512MB, but it's difficult to find anything higher in memory for an AGP slot at a reasonable price - most Steam games should still run fine on this card, but maybe with slightly lower performance settings!).

I really doubt your PC is so old that it uses PCI graphics, so I won't list any PCI graphics cards here :)

When it arrives, it's a simple case of clicking the card into the corresponding slot on your motherboard and screwing it into the back panel of your computer. Then, plug your monitor into the new graphics card, install the necessary drivers and you're good to go!

Good luck!

Sometimes, there's an extra cable to connect for a fan, but I don't think this applies with any of the cards I've linked you to :)

For good all-round coverage towards A+ and basic networking knowledge, work through this book, and then read through this book (whether you take the test(s) or not). You might be able to find older editions in a library. Those are also good, but be aware that you will then need to read a bunch of PC mags for several weeks or months to bring yourself up to date. Or maybe you can also bring yourself up to date with Wikipedia. The commercial aspect of magazines however gives you a good idea of what's currently on the market -- something which Wikipedia doesn't necessarily do. So I'd recommend either older editions of the books from a library, and then following that up with a hefty pile of PC mags + Wikipedia, or the most recent editions of those books and maybe just two or three PC mags and just checking the odd thing online. That should get you a decent foundation. As to whether you'll then subsequently want to progress to more advanced (vendor) certifications such as the ones mentioned by the parent poster (and which ones of those) -- that'll be something you'll be best equipped to decide once you get there.

Has he read The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles? It's a great fantasy quest story by Julie Andrews (and when I read it, I had no idea that name had any significance). I have the paperback version of the edition shown in the link.

If you still have some cash leftover after helping out with the other requests, I would love to have this book used would be fine.

Edit: Or this one :)

My favourite ever is Dog In The Playground by Allen Ahlberg (from the book Please Mrs Butler, which is stuffed with awesome poems).

Dog in the playground
Suddenly there
Smile on his face
Tail in the air

Dog in the playground
Bit of a fuss
I know that dog!
Lives next to us

Dog in the playground
"Oh no he don’t
He’ll come with me
You see if he won’t!"

The word gets round
The crowd gets bigger
"His name’s Bob"
"It ain’t - it's Trigger!"

"They call him Archie"
"They call him Frank"
"Lives by the fish shop"
"Lives up the bank"
"Who told you that?"
"Pipe down! Shut up
I know that dog
Since he was a pup"

Dog in the playground
"We’ll catch him, Miss
Leave it to us
Just watch this!"

Dog in the playground
What a to-do
Thirty five children
Caretaker too,
Chasing the dog
Chasing each other,
"I know that dog!
He's our dog’s brother!"

"We’ve cornered him now
He can’t get away
Told you we’d catch him
Robert and - hey!
Don’t open that door -
Oh, Glenis you fool!
Look, Miss what’s happened!
Dog in the school..."

Dog in the classroom
Dog in the hall
Dog in the toilets
He's paying a call!
Forty six children
Caretaker too,
Headmaster, three teachers
Hullaballoo!

Lost him! Can’t find him...
He’s vanished and then...
"Oh look, Miss he's back
In the playground again!"

Shouting and shoving
"I’ll give you what for!"
Sixty five children
head for the door

Dog in the playground
Smile on his face
Tail in the air
Winning the race

Dog at his element
Off at a jog
Out of the gates:
Wish I was a dog

Dog in the playground
Couldn’t he run?

Dog in the playground
.....Gone!
