I am a huge Final Fantasy fan and although my girlfriend is familiar with the series, she is not as passionate about the games as I am. However, for Christmas last year she got me a Final Fantasy Artbook called The Sky. It features breathtaking art that is instantly recognizable to any Final Fantasy fan. You also will not need to know which games are his favorite because the book features artwork from most of the main games in the series. So no matter what he will be happy. I was ecstatic Christmas day last year when my girlfriend got this for me and I'm sure your boyfriend would be as well. If it is too late for you to order online I have seen it in stock at my local Barnes and Noble.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

If you wanted to opt for something extra to go with the lightning deck, I'd suggest the Ultimania Archive books (English translated Volume 2 releases in December). They have tons of behind the scenes info about the games in each volume (Vol. 1 covers games I-VI, Vol. 2 will cover VII-IX, and when Vol. 3 releases next year... X-XIV) a lot of the artwork done by Yoshitaka Amano, concept sketches, maps of the world. For under $20, it's a really great coffee table book to flip through and take a look at all the work that goes into each game.

Or maybe a Lightning plush to go with the deck. lol

If your friend is a little more into Final Fantasy than just XIII though, definitely either one of the Ultimania Archive books or one of Amano's artbooks like "The Sky" or "Illustrations". Best of luck to you!

My apologies.

Let me be a little more helpful: Did your giftee list any specific games from the Final Fantasy series? If so, here are some easter eggs he or she may like:

  • Final Fantasy XIII trilogy: in this series, maybe consider the pendant that lightning wore. You can find it for pretty cheap but if you think it's too cheap, it could be part of a bigger gift package.

  • Final Fantasy VIII: The Tetra Master card game was a mini-game, but a huge factor in this gameplay (required to complete some quests and get summons).

  • Final Fantasy VII: (Most people loved this game and chose it as their #1). There's so many to list for this one and chances are your giftee has already seen the movie: FFVII: Advent Children as well. But what he or she may not have seen is the Collector's Edition with 30 minutes extra never before scene footage!
u/LeonS95 · 4 pointsr/FinalFantasy

I was given the first Ultimania Archive as a gift recently and I really love it. It's a book full of concept art, development history, and just general information about the first six games of the series. Great gift for any fan and it's fairly cheap too.

u/lilvon · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Lmao! Fair enough. As an anime fan I do prefer Nomura's style. But I DEFINITELY appreciate Amano's work & even own The Sky Box set of art books.

u/TitoHashbrown · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

Can confirm. I just bought this item last week for $31 plus shipping. Just did a chat with an Amazon rep and was refunded $18 as well. Thanks for the heads up!

To add to this, it is an AWESOME collection and I thought it was a steal for $31, even better at this price.

Does anyone own:

I read that it contains a lot of the same artwork and not worth getting if you purchased "The Sky". Was curious how accurate that was.

u/Kolop · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

I bought a copy off amazon when it released last year. It is really great. Great production value and product.

u/timetojetpack · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Pretty sure Amazon has a hardback set of VII, VIII and IX they re released awhile back. You definitely dont want the OG FFIX guide, its possibly the worst strategy guide ever lol.

Damn that collection is expensive now. Looks like you can buy the original VII guide on there. As for IX your best and cheapest option is to use the internet, because thats pretty much what the OG guide did too. Except its on a dead server you can no longer access, someone did back it up though into a zip drive so if you want to buy the OG IX guide and find that you would be okay.

u/April-F · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

I bought this one

It's super pretty and comes with prints. They're guides by Prima :)

u/Unveiledexodus · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

The Sky art books on Amazon. They are a collection of concept art by Yoshitaka Imano from the first 10 games. I own this collection and it is really quite spectacular. Hyrule Historia is also a good gift, as it covers all Zelda games from inception through Skyward Sword. Not as much of an art book as it is a general retelling of the franchise and an order of events for the games.

If you husband is somewhat of an audiophile, I would suggest Distant Worlds 1 & 2

This should cover you for whatever birthdays/christmas/anniversaries for like a year.

u/bgdish · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

I bought that for my best friend for his birthday and he about shit himself. It is a beautiful collection. I own one myself as well.

u/demonic_hampster · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

It was included with the special edition of Advent Children (not Advent Children Complete.) I think this is that special edition, but I'm not 100% sure. The description on Amazon seems to match the description here, but there's no mention of Last Order on Amazon. Still, I'm pretty sure that's it.

u/Tinfoil_King · 3 pointsr/FinalFantasy

This probably isn't what you are looking for, but is the closest to what I know might be.

I picked this up a few years ago, The Sky. It is three art books on Amano's art for the Final Fantasy series. Even if you don't have it there is a chance you've seen decent chunk of this. Skimming through it I'm not seeing anything describing his process or interviews. It is largely just concept art for the games.

However, what it does have is a chronological order of his Final Fantasy art from 1987. So you might be able to use it as a collected grouping of his art to see his evolution over the decades. At least as far as Final Fantasy is conerned. n

The NES era, volume 1, looks to be mostly just the occaisonal scene, but mostly the final drawn art pre-Pixel conversion.

Volume 2 is the SNES era. As it progesses it begins including more varied stuff. Some serious drawings, some silly little asides.

Volume 3, the 3D era up to FF10 is different. Less art per game, but looks to be earlier in the process stuff than the previous two volumes. More "drafty" for lack of a better word. Stuff like this where Aerith looks more like Celes. A noticeable amount of pages where the same drawing is shown in different Colors. Three variations of this are in this volume scattered about.

As a layman, it seems the three volumes are:

  • Volume 1 - NES finished work before handed off the pixel team, plus a few cinematic scenes.
  • Volume 2 - Finished work, some concept messing around, and "doodles". It is twice the size of the other two.
  • Volume 3 - Seems to have the most evolution of character concepts as development progressed.
u/Gprinziv · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

This is a good one that showcases a lot ofwork from his other projects as well as final fantasy. I can never get enough of Amano's work. He's easily my favorite artist of all-time.

u/willawillawilla · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Definitely FFVII then! If you want something fancier, there are replica Buster swords and Play Arts figures--Cloud and Sephiroth are the anchor characters and probably the safest bets. This art book is gorgeous if you think he might be into that, but it's not FFVII exclusive. This print set is cute, too. Or there's the Static Art Minis of Cloud, Sephiroth, and Tifa.

There's probably a bunch of soundtracks & such out there too, but I'm not too familiar with those.

u/Count_Couchlock · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

Oh no, that sounds like The Sky, which you should be able to find for much cheaper, though coming from someone who collects artbooks of all kinds (and loves Final fantasy), it's priceless. But on Canadian Amazon it's about $20 to $30 cheaper and worth every penny.

u/its_ichiban · 3 pointsr/FinalFantasy

It's actually Yoshitaka Amano: The Complete Prints. It's quite a big collection, includes some fold out pieces as well. Love his artstyle!

u/TonyFair · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

Not sure if they have stuff about development on the Ultimania Archive Vol. 1. I know they have a lil bit of VII on the Vol. 2 but dunno about the previous ones.

It's a great book tho, try to check it

u/invisigoth1013 · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

hmmm seems like the Japanese don't really like it...its score on Amazon JP is pretty low too...

u/available2tank · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Theres Art of Eorzea, as well as the Heavensward Artbook.

There's The Dawn, and the Art of Final Fantasy XV will be released around December 2017.

I really enjoy the Art of Eorzea since the artstyle is right up my alley and just love Akihiko Yoshida, Masao, and Namae's artstyles too bad they left the team :(.

If you dont mind, there's also The Tactics Ogre Artbook that's primarily by Tsubasa Masao, under the tutelage of Akihiko Yoshida, who both worked on Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII (iirc), and Final Fantasy XIV.

u/Scoompoof · 6 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive Volume 1

I own all three of these and they are super cool.

u/StarFireLiz · 7 pointsr/FinalFantasy

I highly recommend people check this out.

The IX section really impressed me. I expected a lot smaller section than what it ended up having.

u/TriumphantBass · 3 pointsr/FinalFantasy

I'd grab it for PSN, it's a better port than the iOS version.

If you're planning to play it on PS3, I'd actually recommend just getting a physical copy of Anthology for PS1, which includes both V and VI.

You can still get a new copy for $10, the same price as either of them alone on PSN.

u/fatcatsings · 5 pointsr/FinalFantasy

The closest are these tiny Play Arts Kai minis, that come in a blind box. I bought this a while back and got all five of them, plus an extra Squall.

They’re tiny but very cute.

u/godblow · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

Well if it makes you feel any better, SE is still selling FF12 Collector's Edition (PS2) for $120...

u/ffxiimaniac · 3 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Awesome! Here's the link for those; Who don't feel like going through the twitter post.

u/Loot_Nympho · 6 pointsr/FinalFantasy

I have this one:

Amano: The Complete Prints

It has quite a few of his final fantasy art along with other commissions. It's a beautiful book.

u/BrandoonFudgeMonster · 3 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Yeah! They’re called Final Fantasy Trading Art Minis. There are two sets of these kinds and the first set contains Squall! I found them at a local game store around where I live, and they come in blind boxes, but you can order them offline as well! I thing Square’s website is out of stock, but Amazon has them! Check them out here:

u/mccombi · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Amazon It's back up to $80CAD now, but CamelCamelCamel shows it at $60 for a couple years. Just gotta hope for a sale now.

u/lordnahte2 · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

Here ya go! That's a ps1 anthology playable on your ps2 that has 6 in it. It's less than $17 and you get 5 as a bonus :D

u/crono09 · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

He's talking about the Limited Edition Collector's Set. It was only released on DVD (not blu-ray) and is the original version of the film, not the Complete version. It includes a book called Final Fantasy VII: The Novel, which is actually a collection of three short stories (released in Japan as On the Way to a Smile). One of those stories was "Case of Denzel," which was later animated and included in the Complete edition. (The other two stories are "Case of Barrett," "Case of Tifa." "Case of Yuffie," "Case of Nanaki," "Case of Shinra," and "Case of the Lifestream" never got official English releases as far as I know.) It also contains the only official English version of Last Order: Final Fantasy VII, which was not included in the Complete edition (although you can easily find it on YouTube).

u/mineofgod · 9 pointsr/FinalFantasy

I pulled inspiration for this piece from Amano's work in this book set. It has a lot of his work from FFI-FFX!

u/suaav · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

That looks really nice. I want this and the Sky ( on my coffee table someday

u/Oneirox · 3 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Not sure about all of these, but i have a lot of these in a book I bought right after i finished FF9, which was nothing but the backgrounds, concept drawings and armor/weapon designs. I think it was literally called "The Art of Final Fantasy IX".
Edit: Yes,

u/Nickthegreat · 3 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Here's a quote from the Amazon listing:

> Pre-order Final Fantasy X|X2 HD Remaster and receive a free upgrade to the Limited Edition with an art book, featuring 24 pages of concept art and commentary from the original FINAL FANTASY X and FINAL FANTASY X-2 development teams.

Personally, I hope a Steelbook case and soundtrack are included, but for now only the art book is confirmed.

u/MattDouglass · -5 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Fine gentlemen, question.
I've been reading a lot about a so called FF7 remake (I never played) and saw the unprecedented crowd reaction at E3. I'm psyched now.

However, the game is already available in the play store ? but it's a port and not the full blown remake, right ?

The full blown remake ( is coming, is that oficially confirmed ??

u/shabroky · 3 pointsr/FinalFantasy

I'm just glad this wasn't a discussion related to that Final Fantasy and Philosophy book.

u/sayhispaceships · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Which book is it? I've been thinking of picking up The Sky to have something to thumb through, every now and again.

Edit: I may have answered my own question, because I can't find another one... haha.

u/adamgrey · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

I'm the same, I like to collect the guides. I pre-ordered the one on amazon when I pre-ordered the games.

u/47D · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Well, on Japanese-Amazon, reviews for FFXV are very negative, compared to reviews for FFXIII on Japanese-Amazon.

u/yemd · 3 pointsr/FinalFantasy

you won't find just the first disc unless you want to pay an insane amount on ebay.

just buy the greatest hits version for $15 on amazon

u/neogohan · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

Also, look at The Sky. It's absolutely massive and covers nearly all of Amano's art for the series, and it's retailing for $50.

It's true that some artbooks get expensive, but typically those are imports, very niche, or are out-of-print.

u/BlackBlizzard · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

If you want the guide for X/X-2 it's $20, Ebay, Amazon.

u/ZainOnyx · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

Advent Children: Limited Edition Collector's Set

There's an Amazon link to the product, if you're into Amazon and all.

u/GaryGrayII · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

But why are we so sure where and how the sections will be implemented?

> Three episodes at $20 each makes a full game at $60.

So then this is going to actually be prorated for one episode?

u/fforde · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

The Deluxe Edition has the Amano Artwork Steelbook Case.

u/Kotetsu42x · 3 pointsr/FinalFantasy

If you order from Amazon, you can get it cheaper than that, just in case you decide to buy it. For the record, I did.

u/OZONE_TempuS · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

Here you go, just note that the guides are the BradyGames guide so you're mostly buying them for the appearance and the supplementary art.

There's also a set for X, X-2 and XII.

u/Pardo48 · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

These books are in Japanese and are known as Ultimania's. The first english one will be released in June and are up for preorder.

u/trice_7 · 3 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Apparently they just released an Ultimania this last June that covers the first 5 or so games. Pt. 2 comes out in december, and PT 3 (The one that covers 13) comes out in April.

Amazon link to the first book

Tagging /u/FFXI_MOBILE_ES for visibility.

u/alasta · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

If theres one for FF6 that doesn't include artwork from The Sky, then I'd get one.

u/Ultra-Q · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

This isn't Final Fantasy but it's still Nomura and I don't know about this but it could be something
Yoshitaka Amano also has an artbook

u/t1s · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

it's $15 on amazon for all 4 discs. $10 if you buy it used.

u/Marowe · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

This says limited edition but it's relatively cheap D:

u/mickaelaria · 0 pointsr/FinalFantasy

What? No, we get the cheesy "road trip" box art. The worst one actually.

u/Pachux · 3 pointsr/FinalFantasy

You might want to check this book

Also this Spira timeline for when you finish FFX

There was a comment around here some time ago about how different FFVII is because some things were lost in translation.

Congratz on beating FFIX! It's my personal favourite.

EDIT: Mirate tambien este thread, interesante

u/Saya_ · 1 pointr/FinalFantasy

Ah so just in UK based stores. They only have specific stores stocking it in the first place which you could check on the official website.

I don't know how it works in UK but I live in Australia and I ordered from the [normal USA Amazon] ( just fine. Checked the official website and they say besides Zavvi you can get it at some place called Shopto. It appears there's still stock from the listing. That's not adequate either?

It seems strangely unfair that it'd be completely closed out to you UK guys when it's still open for other countries.
